Old School of the Week: Mercedes Benz 190E 2.3-16

I’m not sure if this is typical of car guys but once or twice a week I come across cars from yesteryear that catch my eye and I would like to own. Can I necessarily afford them? Well, no, but it is fun to dream. I’ll spend time researching the car and, of course, examining whatever historic footage I can find on YouTube and looking at pictures.

Well, this past week the car I’ve been looking at is the mid-1980′s Mercedes 190E 2.3-16. Many might not remember the 2.3-16 as it was superseded in time by the very car whose creation it spurred on: The BMW E30 M3. For over two decades the 2.3-16 has lived in the shadows of BMW as the original M3 went on in the late 1980′s and early 1990′s to dominate the European touring car arena. However, the 190E 2.3-16 is a car whose greatness should not be forgotten as it quietly finds its place as a modern classic.
2010 Porsche 911 Turbo ups the ante
Last fall, many will remember the unusual rivalry that came about between Porsche and Nissan all of which centered around the famed Nurburgring. Nissan’s then-new GT-R was said to turn a near unheard of lap time in stock trim around the ‘Ring while Porsche rebutted that Nissan’s new super car couldn’t beat their own Turbo or GT2′s lap time.

Felipe Massa is back at Ferrari after a major accident in July in Hungary after a spring from a Brawn GP car came loose and flew up off of the track to hit Massa in the brow while he was traveling at 150MPH. After suffering heavy injuries to his skull and nearly losing his left eye, Massa has been out of the driver’s seat ever since undergoing several surgeries and taking the slow road to recovery. Not surprisingly, Massa’s accident was one of the worst since the death of Ayrton Senna at Imola in 1994.
