‘SUPER HIGH PERFORMANCE WRAPPED IN LUXURY’

If you crave super-high-performance with a sporty and luxurious interior, then look no further than the 2011 Lexus IS F small sedan. As the first production model to wear the brand’s ‘F’ marquee, the IS F offering a thrilling, fun-to-drive experience with all of the luxury and amenities that Lexus brings to the fore.

The model races into 2011 with several updates including LED daytime running lamps, an improved suspension system, new instrument cluster, and a special interior leather package.

To improve its responsiveness and ride comfort, in addition to providing you with more control, engineers revised the Electronic Power Steering (EPS) system and suspension. With revised front and rear spring rates, shock absorber dampening, rear bushings and rear camber angle, the IS F provides a more confident ride straight ahead at speed and when attacking sharp corners.

The sporty interior is complemented with new IP gauges, a silver colored-trimmed steering wheel, dark finish aluminum composite ornamentation, and a sport model switch that is now moved to the steering wheel for easier access. In addition, the all-new orange and black leather interior with contrast stitching flaunts the IS F’s vivacious attitude with deeply cut side bolsters and an orange ‘F’ emblem on the bottom of the new power tilt/telescoping sport steering wheel.

The Lexus IS F is exclusively powered by a performance-tuned 5.0 liter V8 engine teamed to an eight-speed Sport Direct Shift transmission. The IS F engine produces 416hp at 6,600rpm and 371lb.ft. of peak torque at 5,200rpm. the engines’ high specific output (83.2hp/liter) and high operating range (6,800rpm redline) reflect the thorough attention to detail underlying the core engineering. The resulting performance character, while quite responsive in low-speed situations, provides a rush of power at high engine speeds.

The forged crankshaft features journals polished to a mirror finish to minimize the friction generated between the connecting rods and the crankshaft. Forged, sintered iron alloy connecting rods ensure high-rpm durability. High-flow cylinder heads designed by Yamaha have a lightweight valvetrain, including forged cam lobes on hollow, chain-driven camshafts, with the inside of the shafts as oil passages. Titanium intake valves are operated by roller rocker arms.

Lexus innovative technologies help to maximize efficiency and reduce emissions, including the SFI D-4 fuel injection (direct-to-cylinder injection system with secondary port injectors) and the Electronic Throttle Control system with intelligence (ETCS-i). essentially, SFI D-4 integrates two types of fuel injection. A direct type high-pressure high pressure fuel injection system which provides a cooling effect in the cylinders and enables the high compression ratio (11.8:1) employed to extract maximum energy from the fuel; a set of low-pressure port fuel injectors that help produce a precise burn to optimize power and efficiency under light and medium load conditions.

A dual air-intake system uses a primary intake passage for low and medium engine speeds. In the higher engine speed range (above 3,600rpm), both the primary and secondary passages are opened, helping boost higher-rpm power.

With the IS F 5.0 liter V8, Lexus made a leap in valve-control technology with the variable valve timing with intelligence by an electric motor (VVT-iE). An electric motor alters the intake camshaft phasing, which made it possible to expand VVT operational range to lower engine speeds, where engine oil pressure is usually not high enough to operate conventional VVT. The exhaust camshaft uses hydraulically controlled variable valve timing.

A scavenge pump force oil from the cylinder heads to the oil pan, ensuring a reliable oil supply even during cornering that exceeds one g. The low-restriction dual-exhaust system terminates in distinctive stack quad diffusers and the sound produced out the rear is deep and growls, even at startup.

The world’s first eight-speed Sport Direct-Shift automatic transmission combines the performance characteristics of an automated manual-type transmission with the smoothness an refinement of a planetary-type automatic transmission. As a result you can choose between ultra-quick manual shifts for performance driving and smooth automatic shifts when convenience is the top priority.

Eight speeds allow gear ratios that maximize torque up to the tire-grip limitations in the lower ranges while optimizing efficiency. Intuitive powertrain control optimally smoothes out off-the-line response. You can selectNormal, Sport or Snow driving modes wit the flip of a switch. Artificial Intelligence-SHIFT (AI-SHIFT) complements the Sport switch selection by automatically adapting the shifting based on road conditions and your input. The IS F transmission is also highly responsive to uphill/downhill driving, always selecting the best gear for power or engine braking.

You can shift manually using either the console shift or steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Hydraulic-control technology allows the IS F’s eight-seed Sport Direct Shift transmission to perform on par with manual transmissions without sacrificing the smoothness of a torque-converter automatic. Paddle-shifting operation is allowed in eight D or M modes, but shifts are quicker and more direct in M mode. In M mode, the transmission will hold each gear to the 6,800rpm redline, and upshifts are executed in just one-tenth of a second. At higher speeds, downshifts are accompanied by automated and precise throttle blips to match engine rpm to vehicle speed.

This is how all high-performing sport sedans and sports cars work or should work today. Giving the enthusiast the choice between heart-pounding stimulating driving times and true automatic transmission gear-changing at leisure times behind the wheel.

The Lexus IS F is based on the robust IS platform, which is engineered from the start to allows a high dynamic envelope. The stiff body structure and the rear subframe are connected through several reinforcements. Much of the IS F development took place at race tracks around the world, includingGermany’s legendary Nurburgring Nordschleife, Circuit Paul Ricard inFrance,Japan’s Fuji Speedway and theHigashi-FujiTechnicalCenterinJapan. Fuji Speedway is the IS F’s home circuit, and the shape of its turn one inspired the F logo design.

Although using the basic double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear suspension configurations of the IS F platform, the IS F features a multitude of track-proven modifications. The IS F sits an inch lower on its suspension than the standard IS models, which lowers the center of gravity and helps provide quicker handling response.

Spring and damper rates are increased, and larger-diameter stabilizer bars are used. The rear suspension control arms are specific to the IS F to optimize geometry for the big, 19 inch wheels. In addition, the monotube shock absorbers use a larger-diameter piston rod. As on other IS models, the sophisticated shock-absorber design utilizes multi-leaf linear control valves to help improve damping force, and rebound springs offer improved body control without degrading ride comfort. I did find the ride stiffer than normal but was surprised how well it damped bumps and potholes on the worn streets ofLos Angeles.

When I was driving over newly paved black-top roads in the mountains it felt like I was gliding over glass.

Subframe suspension mounts are stiffer than on IS models to help reduce sway and ensure control under acceleration and braking. The engine mounts are also stiffer for amore direct feel. Special jounce stoppers on both the front and rear suspension come into play early in the compression stroke to help reduce the sway angle when cornering and to reduce dive when braking.

The IS F rides on 19 inch forged-alloy race-bred wheels by BBS with a distinct dark-gray finish and an asymmetrical 10-spoke design. Up front are 19X8 inch wheels wrapped with 225/40R19 tires and 19X9 inch wheels wrapped with 255/35R19 tires. Both Michelin Pilot and Bridgestone Pontenza tires were each developed specifically for the 170mph track capability of the IS F. High-rigidity hub unit bearings are engineered for rigorous high g-force track driving. The direct-type tire pressure monitor system allows two sets of tires to be registered giving you the benefit of a system with a set of track tires or winter tires. The multi-information display indicates the tire selector switch.

A specially calibrated version of Lexus’s innovative Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system helps provide superior handling dynamics and traction during spirited driving times. Combining input from a variety of sensors, VDIM is designed to anticipate the onset of a vehicle skid or slide and help correct the situation with a combination of braking, steering and throttle control in a way that is essentially transparent to you behind the wheel. VDIM integration provides precise management for ESP, VSC, traction control and ABS, BA, EBD, and engine torque (via the electronically controlled throttle.

During cornering, VDIM suppresses any tendency for the inside wheel to spin, transmitting more power to the outside wheel to help maintain traction and momentum. When braking on a mixed-friction surface, VDIM will direct steering assist in the direction that will help provide greater control. This all happens in less than a second for you to gain greater control of your direction.

In Sport mode, VDIM allows a higher dynamic thresholds before intervening and alters steering assist to increase steering feel. Sport mode helps provide excellent optimal vehicle control on a track in areas where the skills even of top-level drivers are challenged. The experienced driver can disengage VSC/TRAC by pressing and holding the TRAC-off button for more than three seconds. Even with VSC/TRAC off, however, the system still provides the brake-based limited-slip differential effect and ABS. The Torsen rear differential helps provide additional traction during very spirited driving.

World-class Brembo brakes were designed to the specifications of the Lexus engineering team. The 14.2 inch ventilated, drilled front rotors are gripped by rigid, high-friction, six-piston aluminum calipers, while 13.6 inch ventilated, drilled rotors use two, high-friction two-piston calipers. Front bumper ducts adjacent to the foglamps stream cool air to the brakes. The brakes are finished with the Lexus name displayed on the calipers.

Passive-safety technology in the IS F begins with a reinforced passenger compartment that helps protect occupants with front-and-rear crush structures. Seatbelt pre-tensioners and force limiters are used for all seating positions.

In addition to advanced dual-stage front and front seat-mounted side airbags, the Lexus Supplemental Restraint System includes side-curtain airbags that extend from the A-pillar to the C-pillar, plus knee airbags up front for both. The optional Pre-Collision System uses millimeter-wave radar to measure and maintain a pre-set distance from the vehicle traveling ahead. PCS if it detects an object closer to the set distance can retract front seat belts, and pre-initialize BA so that increased braking will be applied the instant you apply the brakes.

The IS F interior is both sporty and luxurious with specially shaped and trimmed, 10-way front bucket seats that help hold you in place comfortably and securely. The standard SmartAccess keyless entry and push-button start/stop button is great for convenience.

Standard amenities include dual-zone automatic climate control, pollen filter and smog detector, one-touch power moonroof, power tilt-telescoping steering wheel, three-position memory function, all power-express windows, remote-heated sideview mirrors, self-dimming rearview mirror, rain-sensing wipers, power door locks, grab handles at each door, rear pull-out armrest with dual cupholders, front console with dual cupholders and storage bin, Lexus Premium Audio System with a six-disc, in-dash CD changer, 13-speakers, USB/iPod connectivity, streaming audio via Bluetooth, XM radio, and an auto sound levelizer. Options include the Mark Levinson Surround Sound system with 14-speakers. The optional Lexus Navigation system features Voice Command. Lexus Enform and Safety Connect response centers operate 24-hours per day/seven days per week.

Based on the IS luxury sport sedan, the IS F is clearly differentiated when viewed from the front/side or rear. A trapezoidal-shaped front bumper fascia, a theme that is repeated in the rear, sets off the V-shape grille. The hood’s raised center section makes room for the V8 engine, and the front fenders were widened to envelope the 19in. low-profile tires. Total grille area is increased to ensure adequate cooling for the 5.0 liter V8, and both upper and lower grille feature a special wire-mesh pattern. The lower grille is flanked by large brake cooling ducts adjacent to standard foglamps. The front fenders wear a discrete silver, black and blue ‘F’ marque.

The car’s wedge-like profile is accentuated by functional front fender air outlets with lower edges that transition into large rocker panels and continue as a character line into the rear bumper. The rear view conveys a strong parting signature for the IS F, with a dramatic trapezoid shape and easily recognizable design elements. Four vertically stacked exhaust differs, two per side, are integrated into the rear bumper. Above them light-emitting diode stop and tail lamps behind clear lenses give the IS F a unique nighttime appearance. The subtle rear spoiler is one of many aerodynamic enhancements which also include special underbody panels to optimize airflow.

For a base price of $59,010.00 or $63, 572.00, you can’t buy a finer, more luxurious and high-performing sport sedan on the market. The IS F is definitely worth the money!

‘STRETCHING THE COUPE TO NEW BOUNDARIES’

Hyundai is making new waves here with innovation, styling, quality, performance for a fair asking price; the latest is the all-new 2012 Veloster that I just finished testing and photographing.

The all-new Veloster is a three-door coupe design with the functionality of a hatch and a passenger-side forward-hinged rear door. It features the 1.6 liter GDI (gas-direct-injected) Gamma inline 4-cylinder engine and mated to the Hyundai standard proprietary six-speed manual transmission or the optional and Hyundai’s first EcoShift dual-clutch six-speed automatic transmission. Both transmissions give the Veloster up to 40mpg/highway miles.

What makes the all-new Veloster even more useful is its full complement of high-tech connectivity abilities starting with the standard multi-function seven-inch touch screen display that features Pandora internet radio capability, Gracenote display technology with voice recognition, video game console connectivity with a 115-volt power outlet, Bluetooth hands-free phone system with voice recognition, standard Blue Link telematics platform, Blue Link Assurance provides a free introductory period of complementary core safety services including Automatic Crash Notification and Assistance, SOS Emergency Assistance, and Enhanced Roadside Assistance, Blue Link Essentials provides Voice Text Messaging, Remote Door Unlock/Lock, Remote Horn & Lights, Panic Notification, Alarm Notification, Quick Tips, Location Sharing, Automated Diagnostic Trouble Code Notification, Maintenance Alert, Monthly Vehicle Report, Recall Advisor, Web Vehicle Diagnostics, Stolen Vehicle Recovery, Stolen Vehicle Slowdown, Vehicle Immobilization, Valet Alert, Geofence, Speed Alert and Curfew.

Blue Link Guidance provides Turn-by-Turn Navigation, POI Search by advanced voice recognition system, POI Web Search & Download, Daily Route Guidance with Traffic Condition, Traffic, Gas Station Locations & Gas Prices, Eco-Coach, Restaurant Ratings, and Weather Report. This list of telematics is the most extensive of any other non-premium coupe or sedan on the market.

Veloster’s unique design takes inspiration from a high-performance sport bike. Veloster has distinctive black A-pillars that give the glass a motorcycle helmet visor appearance. In the front is an aggressive form of Hyundai’s signature hexagonal front grille, hood scoop detailing, and unique Hyundai-signature LED position lights. Optional packages add a chrome grille surround, piano black highlights, fog lights and a massive dual panoramic sunroof that makes the entire roof length glass to decrease weight and lower the center of gravity.

In profile the Veloster features ‘Fluidic Sculpture’ character lines, a deep scallop below each door, muscular wheel arches, bodycolor door handles and mirrors, and wraparound headlights and taillights. The Veloster comes standard with 17 inch alloy wheels and offers two types of 18 inch wheels. The top-of-the-line 18 inch wheels that I had shod on my test model had painted inserts, a segment first and a real eye-catcher.

Veloster’s dynamic rear design has a distinctive glass hatch with spoiler, dual centered chrome rectangular exhaust outlets, a segment first, and a black lower fascia that complements the assertive front fascia.

Inside you’ll notice that the entire dashboard and doors are covered in black carbon fiber weave and that the center stack and controls resemble a sport bike fuel tank and incorporate an optional push-button start/stop in the lower center of the stack. The air vents are inspired by motorcycle tailpipes; while the floor console mirrors the deeply cut comfortable and supportive front bucket seats. Metallic accents abound throughout the interior and give the interior a more spacious look and feel. Alloy pedals and a leather wrapped tilt/telescoping steering wheel and shift knob are optional. All dials, switches and buttons are within easy reach and fully illuminated for safe nighttime travel. The instrument cluster is also easy to see and understand.

Veloster combines the style of a coupe and the functionality of a hatchback, while also incorporating an additional passenger-side door. In the past, some coupes have used smaller rear-hinged access doors. These coupes have always been compromised by having to open the driver-side door before the rear door could be opened, proving to be inconvenient for both the driver and passenger, and extremely difficult to operate in tight parking lot situations. Hyundai’s fresh take here implements a conveniently hinged door on the passenger side of the Veloster, providing safe and ready access to the surprisingly spacious rear seats. It is also convenient for loading or unloading cargo when the second-row seats are folded. The passenger-side rear door handle is hidden to maintain the coupe design. Another Hyundai first that works!

Moving the all-new Veloster forward is the all-new Gamma 1.6 liter four-cylinder engine that is the smallest Hyundai engine to use Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI). GDI helps deliver highway fuel economy of 40mpg, lower emissions and higher reliability. Despite its small size it deliver big numbers like 138hp at 6,300rpm and 123lb.ft. of torque at 4,850rpm. But GDI is only part of the story as the new Gamma also features dual continuously variable valve timing, an electronic throttle control, a roller timing chain, variable induction and innovative anti-friction coatings such as CrN physical vapor deposition coating and diamond like carbon coating.

Hyundai’s commitment to making the Gamma engine extremely fuel efficient continues by pairing it with a standard silky-smooth, close-ratio, six-speed manual transmission that I used in my test Veloster, or an optional, all-new six-speed EcoShift dual-clutch transmission developed by Hyundai.

Even though the hp and torque number are under 150hp the Veloster didn’t seem like ‘dead-wood’ when accelerating on city streets or merging into fast moving freeways inLos Angeles. Its low weight of just 2,584lbs. is 400lbs. lighter than a new Scion tC and more than 80lbs. lighter than a new Mini Cooper S. I was truly impressed with how quickly the Veloster gained speed when I shifter from first into third then forth gears.

The low weight also helps with agility and handling capability, not to mention the unique suspension system up front and in the rear.

The Veloster is fitted with a MacPherson strut front setup with coil springs, gas shocks and a 24mm stabilizer bar. The rear setup features a lightweight V-torsion beam, a Hyundai first with an integrated 23mm stabilizer bar to allow bracing of the arms for greater stiffness and to further control body roll. The rear setup also features monotube shocks for ride comfort. I was impressed at how well this front-wheel-drive vehicle responded to my steering inputs but that is also because the Veloster features a sport-tuned electric power steering system that adjusts instantly to changing driving conditions while improving fuel economy over a hydraulic system. A quick-ratio steering rack is used for crisp feel on turn-in. The Veloster’s turning diameter is just 34.1ft., better than the Scion tC’s 37.4ft., Honda’s CR-Z’s 35.4ft., and Mini’s 35.1ft.

Veloster stops with authority thanks to large, power-assisted steel disc brakes at all four corners. Up front are 11 inch vented discs clamped with dual-piston calipers while 10.3 inch solid discs in the rear are clamped with large single-piston calipers. Keeping you in control during severe braking maneuvers is standard ABS, BA, EBD, Traction Control and Electronic Stability Control all working together to keep you on track.

Veloster protects you and your passengers with six airbags-up front, front seat-mounted impact bags, full side-curtain airbags, five 3-point safety belts with pretensioners/load limiters up front, tire pressure monitoring system, front and rear crumple zones plus steel beams in each door.

In the digital age everyone wants to be connected to their electronics at all times so as mentioned earlier, Veloster comes with a seven-inch touch screen display to operate the aforementioned devices.

Veloster is available with two audio systems, a standard 196-watt AM-FM-satellite radio-CD-MP3 audio system with six-speakers and iPod/USB/auxiliary input jacks. A 450-watt Dimension Premium Audio system with eight-speakers including an eight-inch subwoofer and external amplifier are optional. Also available is a navigation system.

The all-new Veloster is something very special with its unique design, functionality, performance, and featuring the latest in connectivity to keep all electronics enthusiasts happy as they drive their new Veloster.

‘A PERFECT BLEND OF COMFORT, PERFORMANCE, TECHNOLOGY AND SAFETY FEATURES’

The 2011 Kia Forte Koup SX is a seamless blend of world-class design, fun-to-drive performance, fuel efficiency and a long list of standard safety and technology features.

The Forte Koup surrounds the driver and front passenger with the latest in must-have technology with Bluetooth wireless connectivity and steering wheel-mounted controls that enable voice-activated hands-free operation for compatible cell phones. For listening convenience, USB and auxiliary input jacks offer full iPod and MP3 controllability via the audio head unit or the standard steering wheel-mounted audio controls. A six-speaker AM-FM-CD/MP3 audio system outfitted with Sirius XM satellite radio capability also comes standard, while speaker lights that can either pulse to the best of the music or simply add mood lighting enhance the personal-lounge feeling of the interior.

Forte Koup’s SX fluid lines and balanced proportions offer a refined and athletic stance with wrap-around headlamps, front lip spoiler, aggressive air intakes, gloss-black front fascia accents at the lower air-intake, foglamps and the signature Kia grille, and a low, sleek profile with swept-back A-pillars, fender stuffing grey-colored 17X7.5 inch alloy wheels wrapped with Goodyear 215/45R17 inch LS performance tires, low side extensions, power heated side mirrors, and chrome pull-out door handles.

Koup offers a muscular yet sophisticated design, and even from the rear, the two-door coupe exudes attitude with slim, LED wrapped taillamps, chrome dual exhaust tips gathered together and a working rear diffuser in a black shroud. No other compact coupe on the road looks like this sporty model.

Riding on the same 104.3 inch wheelbase as its sedan and hatchback siblings, Forte Koup provides comfortable seating for up to five passengers with an overall length of 176.4 inches, an overall width of 69.5 inches and an overall height of just 55.1 inches, making it 2.4 inches lower, 2 inches shorter and 0.4 inches narrower than the sedan. With a front lip spoiler, under floor airflow deflectors ahead of all four wheels, an engine bay cover and a lowered stance the Koup cuts through the air with a highly competitive coefficient of drag of just 0.31 and an aerodynamic lift coefficient of just 0.21, enhancing stability and providing a smoother ride at higher speeds.

The two door’s high torsional stiffness gives Forte Koup responsive handling, a smoother ride and improved refinement over the competition. The Koup SX that I tested is built on a lightweight, steel hydro-formed subframe featuring a sport-tuned front MacPherson independent suspension including coil springs, monotube shocks and a stabilizer bar. The rear torsion-beam setup includes coil springs, monotube shocks and a stabilizer bar to provide a firmer ride with reduced body roll and improved handling when cornering.

An engine-speed-sensitive, power-assisted rack & pinion steering system and smart front suspension design add the finishing touches to the robust, finely tuned steering and suspension package while providing a highly competitive turning circle of just 33.9 feet.

Additional refinements are utilized throughout the vehicle to help ensure a comfortable ride while significantly reducing noise, vibration and harshness. Additionally, all-new noise-inhibiting materials are used in the engine bay bulkhead and rear parcel shelf, including the injection of sound-dampening foam into hollow sections of the bodyshell at strategic noise-transference points, as well as improved door and window seals. The Koup SX is fun and easy to drive whether you are just taking care of personal errands, long strips or when exercising the car on the back roads.

Powering the front wheels on the Koup SX is a 2.4 liter all-aluminum four-cylinder engine with CVVT that pumps out a healthy 173hp at 6,000rpm and 168hp at 4,000rpm. Two transmissions are available for the Koup, an efficient standard six-speed manual transmission that is silky smooth, or an optional electronically controlled six-speed automatic transmission with sequential shifting via the stick or through the steering column mounted paddle shifters. The Koup SX blasts out to 60mph from a standstill in just 7.0 seconds while returning an excellent EPA mileage spec of 23mpg/city and 31mpg/highway.

Big, four-wheel power assisted steel disc brakes help slow the Koup SX down from speed. Up front are 11.8 inch vented discs clamped with dual-piston calipers while 10.3 inch solid discs are clamped with single-piston calipers in the rear. Keeping you in control during severe braking or when braking on wet or slick pavement are standard ABS, BA, Traction Control and Electronic Stability Control.

Inside, Koup SX provides a spacious 90.7 cu.ft. of interior volume, a surprisingly roomy interior for a two-door coupe. Driver and front passenger have an impressive 38.7 inches of headroom and 43.6 inches of legroom and 35.3 inches of headroom and 33.9 inches of legroom in the rear seats. With 12.6 cu.ft. of cargo space daily trips and weekend getaways area breeze. The 60/40 split folding rear seats that fold nearly flat, extend the available amount of cargo space even further to 53.4 cu.ft.

Standard equipment inside the SX includes supportive, nicely appointed sport bucket seat up front with extra side bolstering and seatback, A/C power windows, door locks, remote keyless entry, cruise control with steering wheel-mounted buttons, a driver’s seat height adjuster, adjustable rear seat headrests, a tilt/telescoping leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, rear defroster, center console with dual cupholders and storage area, dual map lights with ceiling-mounted drop-down sunglass holder, variable intermittent wipers/washers, paddle shifters, auto headlamps, red stitching on seats, metal foot pedals, and metallic finish trim on the dashboard, shifter bezel and doors.

The SX gauge cluster is a Supervision style with trip computer, a red-hued glow and message display shown at the bottom of the cluster. The display includes information such as outside temperature, distance to empty, engine coolant temperature, elapsed time, door-open alert, fuel consumption, average and instantaneous miles-per-gallon readings.

Key options include a leather package for the seats with heated buckets up front, a navigation system, automatic climate control, push button start with smart key and power sunroof.

Forte Koup SX standard safety features include front active headrests, dual advanced front airbags, front seat-mounted and side curtain airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, side impact door beams, front and rear crumple zones, 3-point safety belts for all seating positions with front pretensioners/load limiters, and a tire pressure monitoring system.

The 2012 Kia Forte SX is one of the best compact, two-door coupes on the market with unique good looks, excellent performance, comfortable and roomy interior with the latest in creature comforts, personal infotainment and safety systems.

The 2012 Tacoma interior also gets a new look with a black high-contrast center console, switch plate covers, dash and upper door trim. The double cab features new heavy-duty all-weather flooring.

This all adds up to more comfort and function with the addition of a larger, higher-resolution display for the optional back-up camera (3.3 X 2.4 inches), a new temperature gauge, optional rearview mirror with compass and Homelink, vanity lamps added to sun visors, an additional overhead storage compartment and two front-deck ‘D’ rings for added versatility.

The double-cab V6 models offer a more advanced display audio system with today’s most in-demand connectivity features. These include navigation, Toyota’s new Entune services, Sirius XM satellite radio, HD radio with iTunes tagging and text/e-mail-to-voice. This premium infotainment system plays through a JBL GreenEdge audio system with seven speakers. GreenEdge technology helps reduce fuel consumption by lowering the electric power demand on the vehicle.

The Toyota Entune system is a collection of popular mobile applications and data services, with three years of complimentary access. Once a smart phone is connected to the vehicle using Bluetooth wireless technology or a USB cable, Entune features are operated using the vehicle’s controls or, for some services, by voice recognition. Entune includes ‘Bing’ and Pandora; iHeartRadio, MovieTickets.com and OpenTable, as well as real-time info including traffic, weather, fuel prices, sports and stocks.

The 2012 Tacoma lines offers two engines: a 2.7 liter DOHC four-cylinder that produces 159hp and 180lb.ft. of torque, and a 4.0 liter DOHC V6 that provides 236hp and 266lb.ft. of torque. In both engines variable valve timing wit intelligence (VVT-i) provides strong low-end and mid-range torque to successfully carry large loads in the cargo box and to bust through tough trails off-road.

And electronic throttle control system with intelligence helps optimize performance and fuel economy. The V6 can be teamed with either a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission. Four-cylinder models offer a choice between a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic.

The TRD Off-Road package that I had provides a carefully tuned balance of off-road performance and on-road handling. Chassis modifications include an electronic locking rear differential, progressive-rate front coil springs, specially tuned Bilstein shocks front and back, a 28mm front stabilizer bar, and 265/70R17 inch BF Goodrich Rugged Trail tires wrapped around custom 17X8 inch alloy wheels. The cargo box features a 400Watt/ 115 Volt power-point. Inside are sport bucket seats with adjustable lumbar support and unique stain proof/water resistant fabric, an overhead console with compass and outside temperature readout, a back-up monitor, metallic tone instrument panel, leather trimmed/tilt/telescoping steering wheel/shifter, remote keyless entry, cruise control, variable speed wipers/washers, auto-dimming reaview mirror, dual map lamps, grab handles at each A-pillar, and thick cut-pile carpeting. On the outside are foglamps, engine skid plate, chrome grille surround and rear bumper, overfenders and TRD Off-Road graphics.

Slowing the new Tacoma V6 double cab 4X4 TRD down from speed are 12.5 inch vented disc clamped with big dual pistons calipers up front and 10 inch drum brakes in the rear. Keeping you in control during braking are standard ABS, EBD, BA, TRAC, and VSC. You guide the new 2012 Tacoma via a power-assisted rack & pinion steering system that gives great feedback from the road and quick response to your inputs. Ground clearance is an excellent 9.1 inches.

The TRD Off-Road package with the automatic transmission comes standard with both Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) and Downhill Assist Control (DAC). HAC operates by independently controlling the brakes at each wheel as needed to help prevent the vehicle from rolling backward or slipping sideways during a transition from a stopped position to climbing a grade. An automatic limited-slip differential (auto-LSD), which uses brake intervention to help reduce tire slippage at the rear wheels, is standard on all Tacoma’s.

DAC uses engine braking to regulate downhill speed and independently control the brakes at each wheel to help improve directional control. DAC automatically de-activates if you depress the brake or throttle pedals, press the DAC button, or shifts into neutral. TRD Off-Road packages feature a locking rear differential that can be activated by a switch in the cab.

Standard safety features include driver/front passenger airbags, seat-mounted side and side-curtain airbags, 3-point safety belts for all seating positions with front pretensioners/load limiters, front/rear crumple zones, steel beam in each door, tire pressure monitor system, and driver/front passenger active head restraints.

Competition is fierce in the mid-size pickup truck segment and with the new look inside and outside, the proven Toyota off-road credentials; the Tacoma should keep ahead of the pack.

‘KEEPING THE LEADERSHIP’

The all-new 2012 Toyota Camry is the seventh-generation andAmerica’s best selling mid-size car for nine years straight, and 13 of the past 14 years. The all-new 2012 Camry debuts with a bolder, more sophisticated design, a more spacious cabin for five adults, improved driving dynamics and an even quieter ride than before. With class leading safety, fuel economy and multi-media technology added in, the end result is the best Camry ever made.

I tested the ‘top-of-the-line’ SE and this model brought me back into the fold as the best all-around mid-size sport sedan offered in America.

The 3.5 liter V6 delivers 268hp at 6,200rpm and 248lb.ft. of torque at 4,700rpm while returning EPA specs of 21mpg/city and 30mpg/highway, the best for any current V6 midsize sedan. The V6 uses chain-driven camshafts and Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence to give the engine a more flat torque curve. To improve efficiency, the V6 features a new, lower oil viscosity and an automatic transmission fluid warmer that brings the transmission to operating temperature more quickly in cold weather. Higher final drive-gear ratios also contribute to better fuel economy in the new Camry V6.

All gas-driven Camry’s come equipped exclusively with a six-speed automatic transmission that offers a sequential manual shift mode using the console shifter. Intelligent control adapts shifting strategy in response to driver input, with fast kick-down. In addition, the SE exclusively offers a ‘D range’ sequential shifting, which allows you to shift gears using the new steering wheel paddle shifters even when the console shifter is in the ‘D’ mode. Also exclusive to the SE, the automatic transmission features faster shift times when in the ‘S’ mode, and more exciting, downshift blipping control emphasizes more sportiness and by matching rpms when downshifting or upshifting. Now real enthusiasts can have more fun behind the wheel of the all-new SE.

Further adding to the fun, excitement and enjoyment of piloting the all-new Camry SE is a more rigid body structure, revised front suspension, redesigned rear suspension and aerodynamics that all help to imbue the new Camry with greater straight-line stability and crisper steering response to your inputs while also enhancing overall ride comfort. Handling stability, more than just conveying a sense of driving enjoyment, also greatly influences your feeling of security.

The all-new 2012 Camry body structure uses a greater amount of high tensile steel (440 Mpa or higher) than before and even stronger high tensile strength sheet steel (590 Mpa or higher), resulting in a stronger but lighter body than before. A flared design on the doors and fenders enables use of slimmer but stronger construction. High tensile aluminum bumper supports are lighter yet stronger than before. Newly developed plastic for the bumper covers and cowl louvers reduces weight as well.

The stiffened cowl section increases suspension-rear rigidity, suppressing twist. The front suspension towers are directly connected through the cowl to increase rigidity, and the attachment method and reinforcement braces have been strengthened. The all-new rear underbody and rear subframe increase lateral force control and torsional rigidity.

The McPherson-strut front suspension now uses inversely wound coil springs that enhance straight-line stability. Shock-absorber damping and stabilizer-bar thickness have been optimized as well. The rear suspension retains the proven dual-link strut configuration of the previous model but has been redesigned with new geometry (increased toe-in during cornering and braking) and retuned components to enhance cornering stability. Coil springs, bushings and stabilizer-bar and shock absorber damping have all been revised.

The SE model that I tested is further differentiated from the other models with further specific sport suspension components and tuning, including exclusive steering knuckles and lighter, stiffer lower control arms. The front and rear springs are exclusive to this model, and the shock absorbers feature internal rebound springs for greater cornering roll resistance. The rear suspension #1 control arm uses a pillow-ball bushing to further enhance handling agility. If that wasn’t enough to increase the handling finesse of the SE, this model also features a power-assist ratio on the new electric power steering system that provides a more sporty feeling with quicker response than on the LE and XLE model Camry’s. Also, electricity is only consumed when assist power is necessary, helping to improve fuel economy.

Slowing the all-new Camry SE down from speed are large, power-assisted, 4-wheel disc brakes. Up front are 11.6 inch vented discs clamped with dual-piston calipers while 11 inch solid rear disc are clamped with large, single-piston calipers. Enhancing your stopping power and control are standard ABS, EBD and BA with VSC and TRAC working together with the braking systems to keep you and your passengers safe in all braking situations.

The new SE rides on the first 18X8 inch alloy wheels on a Camry, and features a unique twist-spoke design wrapped with 225/45R18 inch all-season tires with excellent grip and smooth ride.

New rear combination lamps and sideview mirrors on the all-new Camry incorporate aero stabilizing fins, inspired by Formula One racing technology, that create air vortexes on the body sides to stabilize the body and contribute to handling stability. New underbody aerodynamic elements up front and in the rear regulate airflow under the vehicle to further a smooth ride, and a standard rear spoiler is employed on the trunk lip on the SE to increase rear downforce.

The exterior styling of the new Camry also refines the model with elegant but modern forms emphasizing a wider and lower stance than ever before. The design conveys an ‘architectural statement’ through crisp, precise character lines, while a more strongly curved door cross-section and more defined rocker panel molding give the Camry a more expressive appearance.

Headlights show a more dynamic shape, with a pronounced curvature of the main-beam unit merging into the bumper cover. Foglamps are standard on the XLE and SE. The rear lamp clusters wrap tightly into the body sides with their top section extending into the trunk panel.

The SE takes it further with its own lower-body design and exclusive fine-mesh upper grille section. The SE also features a three-part lower grille section housing foglamps, along with black sport trim headlamp bezels. The more prominent rocker panel moldings on the SE cleanly link to integrated front and rear underbody spoilers, emphasizing width, and the trunk lid carries an integrated spoiler. Down below the rear bumper are two, wide chromed exhaust tips further adding to the sportier look.

While featuring nearly the same external dimensions as the previous model, the 2012 Camry offers a more inviting, modern and spacious cabin. A new dashboard design, modified seat locations, redesigned seats and ‘lean’ door, pillar and headliner trim all combine to add both real space and greater perceptual spaciousness while also enhancing outward visibility. Repositioning the driver’s seat and the standard tilt/telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel on the SE (tilt has increased 33%) also aid forward visibility and enhance your position.

The throttle pedal and front seats were moved forward, and the rear-seat hip point was positioned rearward, increasing the couple distance by 0.6 inch; together with reshaped front seatbacks help increase rear-knee room by 1.8 inch. The redesigned center console and front edge of the rear-seat cushion increase rear middle seat legroom by two inches.

Not as obvious are the many areas where Camry designers reshaped interior trim to increase the feeling of spaciousness, including the A and B pillars, headliner over the rear seat and door trim. Three-dimensional construction and contrasting-material textures give the new instrument panel a feeling of depth, while the shapes themselves contribute to a more spacious cabin and improved forward sightlines. The prominently curved center cluster appears to float over the instrument panel, reducing its visual mass. Soft textures used on the upper instrument panel, upper door trim; door armrests and center console armrest contribute to greater comfort. Stitching on the instrument panel soft padding and matching stitching-look trim elsewhere helps to create a sense of luxury. Aluminum color and chrome trim are used judiciously. The SE model features unique front and rear upholstery in black-on-black, or black-on-gray. The height adjustment on the driver’s seat offers nearly a half inch grater range than before. The SE’s sporty front seats provide thicker side bolsters, and the exclusive 3-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel offers paddle-shift control for the six-speed automatic transmission.

The new Camry provides the added functionality demanded by consumers today, yet keeps it controls straightforward and intuitive to use. Control knobs impart a high-precision fee when used. The instrument cluster is easy to see and understand. Special attention was paid to function and comfort with the center console design. Soft kneepads on both sides add comfort up front; the front section offers a 12-volt accessory connector and an easy-to-access USB/input jack port for connection iPods and other media devices. A sliding rear console door-rather than a more traditional flip-up design-enables easier access from either seat. All Camry’s now feature a standard 60/40 split folding rear seatback to expand cargo capacity. The seats can be lowered by remote release from the trunk area. Rear-seat side airbags are standard, and an armrest with dual cupholders adds comfort and convenience.

Seamlessly integrated into the Camry are state-of-the-art electronics and enhanced connectivity features. A Bluetooth wireless connection for compatible hands-free phone calls is standard, now improved by an available phone book transfer function. Also standard is a USB port that allows playing of music and video from portable devices, using the vehicle sound system and available in-dash display screen, including full iPod integration.

The top-of-the-line audio is equipped with a new seven-inch Premium HDD Navigation system with Entune and JBL. This system offers a new split-screen feature that allows for simultaneously displayi8ng navigation and audio information.

My Camry SE had the new JBL GreenEdge audio system that combines a eight-channel amplifier and door-mounted ‘acoustic lens’ speakers, to provide a high-quality sound. The GreenEdge amplifier achieves a 66% reduction in overall mass and a 50% enhancement in sound efficiency. The GreenEdge speakers produce a high output of sound with the same power or less consumption of conventional models.

The all-new 2012 Camry is the firstToyotato offer the Entune multimedia system. For the first time ever in aToyotaautomobile, this new system leverages the mobile smartphone to provide a richer in-vehicle experience with fully integrated access to navigation, entertainment and information services. Entune is the first ever to support for engaging mobile apps, such as Bing, OpenTable and movietickets.com. Entune brings the largest selection of music options available to a vehicle including iHeartRadio’s 750+ stations and Pandora’s personalized music service.

The all-new Camry is one of the safest vehicles to be driving or as a passenger with standard features including 10-airbags, driver/front passenger knee & seat-mounted side front and rear side curtain airbags, LATCH system, tire pressure monitoring, front/side/rear crumple zones, whiplash-injury lessoning front seats, 3-point safety belts with pretensioners/load limiters up front.

The all-new 2012 Camry is a much better mid-size family sedan than ever-more refined, more contemporary. Overall it should keep it leadership sales position in 2012.

‘RAVE REVIEWS ALL AROUND’

The Toyota RAV4, already a leader in the crossover SUV segment it launched nearly 15 years ago offers even greater value for 2011. The 2011 RAV4 is offered in three distinct grades-Base, Sport, and top-of-the-line Limited-and with a choice between the 2.5 liter four-cylinder engine and a 3.5 liter V6. Both engines can be teamed with either front-wheel drive or electronic on-demand four-wheel drive, giving consumers a wide array of vehicle choices. The roomy RAV4 offers an optional third-row seating on Base and Limited grades. I tested the V6 powered Limited AWD model and now know why it is such a huge seller. It just does it all so well.

Built on a 104.7 inch wheelbase, the roomy RAV4 is engineered with a focus on quiet ride quality. By eliminating outer moldings from the windshield and door glass enhances aerodynamics and reduces wind noise. The RAV4’s contemporary design strongly conveys theToyotaidentity in an aerodynamically efficient shape.

The Limited’s unique grille with chrome accents, multi-reflector headlamps, distinct sharp character lines, color-keyed door handles and overfenders, integrated foglamps, rear privacy glass, LED tail lamps, swing-out rear door, color-keyed power heated outside mirrors with turn-signal indicators, and roof rack, all riding on 17X7 inch aluminum six-spoke alloy wheels wrapped with 225/65R17 all-season tires combine to give the new 2011 RAV4 Limited a look like no other small sport utility on the road.

The inside is roomy and very ergonomic. A brushed silver finish around the center stack to the center console, door trim and two steering wheel spokes give the RAV4 a more contemporary style. Three-tiered Optitron gauges are easy to see and provide an upscale look. Visibility outside is excellent all-around you. Useful touches are also evident with the addition of a large vanity mirror with ‘eye-friendly’ ceiling lights, illumination on two extra-large front cupholders and a cell phone holder in the center console. The Limited also offers an additional level of refinement with an A/C vent dial, chrome accented A/C vent garnish and a chrome parking brake tip. All of the dials, switches and buttons are large, easy to reach and fully illuminated for safe nighttime travel.

The RAV4 offers numerous seating configurations, under-floor storage (on models without the third-row seat), and provides 73 cu.ft. of cargo area with all rear seats folded down. The 60/40-split second row seat features reclining seatbacks and a pull-out armrest with dual cupholders. The seats slide fore and aft to maximize room for passengers or cargo. The second row seats fold flat using convenient tilt-down levers on the side of the seatbacks; two-row models include an additional one-touch fold-flat lever in the cargo area for convenience when needed. The optional 50/50 Split-and-Stow third-row seat accommodates two passengers and folds flat under the rear deck.

Abundant interior storage includes a dual-tiered glovebox, front door compartments, a large center console storage box with armrest, front seatback pockets and a rear door storage pocket. On two-row models, two storage compartments are concealed under the rear cargo area floor by a water repellant foldable deck board for security.

Propelling the RAV4 Limited forward is a powerful 3.5 liter DOHC V6 that generates a healthy 269hp at 6,200rpm and 246lb.ft. of torque at 4,700rpm. This V6 is also equipped with dual VVT-i to maximize performance and efficiency while reducing emissions. The V6 is equipped exclusively with a five-speed automatic/sequential shifting transmission that offers better fuel economy than some less powerful competitors. The V6 RAV4 can blast out to 60mph from a standstill in just 6.8 seconds, yet has estimated EPA fuel economy ratings of 19mpg/city and 26mpg/highway, besides all RAV4 V6 models meet Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV II) certification.

A strong, stiff body structure, a unique four-wheel independent system and electronic rack & pinion steering (EPS) give the RAV4 agile, sporty handling and a comfortable car-like ride. The unique suspension system features a MacPherson strut setup in the front with a 1.0 mm. stabilizer bar. The rear independent setup features double-wishbones, coil springs, gas-charged shocks and a 0.87 mm. stabilizer bar. This system gives the RAV4 excellent ability to travel over off-road obstacles, give a quiet and controlled ride on the highway, and maintain control during hard cornering in the back roads. The compact EPS unit contributes to fuel economy by eliminating the traditional power steering pump and provides computer-controlled assist only when required. In addition, EPS is interfaced with Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) for handling control under adverse road conditions.

My RAV4 Limited came equipped with AWD on-demand that uses an electronically controlled coupling to distribute torque between the front and rear wheels, depending on road conditions and driver input. The system can continuously and seamlessly switch from front-wheel-drive to four-wheel-drive mode, maximizing fuel efficiency. In Auto mode, torque distribution to the rear wheels is decreased during low speed cornering for better maneuverability.

A 4WD manual locking switch maximizes torque distribution to the rear wheels. When vehicle speed reaches 25mph, the system reverts to Auto mode. Lock mode also disengages when the brakes are applied, optimizing ABS and VSC operation. Also standard is Hill-start Assist and Downhill Assist Control.

Quickly slowing the new RAV4 down from speed are large, 4-wheel, power-assisted steel disc brakes. Up front are11.8 inch vented discs clamped with dual-piston calipers while 11.2 inch solid discs are clamped with single-piston calipers. Standard ABS, EBD and BA work together with the VSC system to help you maintain control of the RAV4 on slick or wet pavement.

‘GOOD CLEAN DIESEL FUN AND FUNCTION’

Originally introduced as ‘all-new’ in 2010, the sixth generation Golf 4-door hatchback showed new fresh, dynamic styling inside and out. I just finished testing the 2011 version with little changes over the 2010 model and had so much fun driving the athletic yet extremely fuel efficient TDI clean diesel engine mated to VW’s six-speed manual transmission.

From the first glance, the 2011 Golf proudly shows off the new ‘face’ of the VW brand with an all-new front end design that includes a wider, doublebar grille that blends into angled halogen headlamps, (HID lights optional for the TDI), for a sportier look. The body-colored bumper sits above a revised lower front fascia featuring a wide-mouthed cooling duct. Crystalline oval foglamps complete the front fascia. These elements combined with the Golf’s wider appearance give the hatchback a more commanding road presence.

Black window trim and the absence of side moldings keep things simple along the sides, for a cleaner look that remains pleasing to the eye. Heading to the rear, a hatch spoiler with integrated third brake light sits atop the hatch and is painted to match the rest of the body while touching on the Golf’s sporty capabilities. Updated taillights mimic their counterparts from up front, and feature integrated clear turn signal and reverse indicators along the bottom edge. Running lights are blended into the lower rear bumper which adds a blacked out insert and cutout for the dual exhaust tips.

I like driving high-mileage cars and the new VW Golf TDI is one of the best non-hybrid models available. The fuel sipping compacts emits 25% less greenhouse gas and achieves more than 30% better fuel economy compared to a similar gasoline engine. The car is equipped with a 2.0 liter clean diesel TDI engine that is marked by its fusion of German-tuned performance and impressive fuel economy-complements of an advanced electronically controlled turbocharger and the electronically controlled direct injection fuel system. The valve train consists of a single overhead camshaft, four-valves per cylinder and maintenance-free hydraulic lifters for added piece of mind. All combined the 2.0 liter powerhouse produces 140hp at 4,000rpm and an impressive 236lb.ft. of torque between 1,750 and 2,500rpm. That is plenty of torque to get you where you want to go fast and with less emissions.

To deliver all that power to the road smoothly, a traditional, close-ratio, six-speed manual transmission comes standard on the clean diesel TDI, and is good for an EPA-estimated 30mpg/city and 41mpg/highway, and 0-60mph in just 8.6sec., much faster than any hybrid in the segment. You can also chose an optional six-speed automatic Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) transmission with Tiptronic, and have the performance of a manual with the effortless precision of an automatic transmission. The DSG uses an automated dual-clutch system that instantly engages and disengages gears without the need for a driver-activated clutch pedal. A computer engages one clutch on the next gear needed, just as the clutch from the previous gear is released. Each resulting shift is quick yet smooth, and lacks the power loss that occurs when using a traditional manual transmission. Tiptronic mode stops the transmission’s automated shifting and instead lets you control gear changes by either tapping the gearshift lever up or down, or using the shift paddles mounted on the steering column. With the DSG transmission, the Golf clean diesel TDI gets 30mpg/city and 42mpg/highway and the same 0-60mph time.

The German engineered Golf TDI loves to be driven and it inspires you with the confidence to do so with ease and comfort, whether cruising along the highway or taking on the twists and turns of country roads. At its core is a laser-welded unibody construction that remains stiff and helps keep everything in line as the Golf TDI zips along. Up front is a sport-tuned, independent setup with MacPherson struts, coil springs telescopic gas-charged shocks and a stabilizer bar for improved road-hugging dynamics. The rear setup is an independent sport-tuned four-link setup with coil springs, telescopic gas-charged shocks and another stabilizer bar to keep the Golf TDI agile yet rider-friendly in most any driving situation.

Steering is enhanced with an electro-mechanical, variable-assisted, power rack & pinion system that, when combined with a quick ratio, gives you an unprecedented level of control and accuracy in the corners and out on the straights.

Slowing the Golf TDI down from are large, 4-wheel, power-assisted disc brakes. Up front are 11.9 inch vented discs clamped with dual piston calipers and 10.9 inch solid discs in the rear clamped with single-piston calipers. Standard ABS, EBD, BA electronic differential lock, Traction Control and the Electronic Stability Program all work seamlessly to keep you in control when riding on slick or wet pavement and during severe braking situations.

On the inside, the latest Golf carries it refinement throughout with a variety of stylish additions that aims to keep drivers and passengers comfortable and pleased. All models start out with eight-way manually adjustable sports bucket seats which include two-way adjustable lumbar support, and adjustable head restraints. The rear seats include adjustable head restraints for all three seating positions, a center pull-down armrest with dual cupholders and have a 60/40 split folding capability for maximizing cargo space configuration when needed. Both the front and rear seats come standard with VW’s ‘Me2’ cloth fabric. Heated seats are optional which also adds to the cold weather package’s heated windshield nozzles. The new three-spoke steering wheel features an embossed center section, and is upgraded to a leather-wrapped version with multifunction controls on TDI models.

Brushed metallic appearance trim inserts are standard on the dash and in the door panels and accent the redesigned instrument panel and center console. Chrome trim surrounds the tachometer on the left side, which incorporates an integrated temperature gauge, and the speedometer on the right has an integrated fuel gauge. Located between the black analog gauges is a multi-function onboard computer display. A sunroof is also optional.

All switches, dials and buttons are within easy reach and fully illuminated for safe nighttime travel. Standard on the TDI model is a touch-screen 8-speaker sound system featuring AM-FM-SIRIUS satellite radio, in-dash 6-CD changer with MP3 CD readability, theft deterrence, and an auxiliary input jack. Mobile Device Interface (MDI) is also standard in the TDI. A 300-watt Dynaudio Lite premium sound system is also optional. The TDI can be ordered with the new touch-screen navigation system with a 6.5 inch high-resolution display, integrated 30GB hard drive, WMA/MP3 audio CD playback, DVD playback, and SD memory card slot and a 3.5mm auxiliary input jack in the center console.

Standard features not mentioned above include single-zone automatic climate control/CFC-free, power, heated outside mirrors, adjustable intermittent front wipers/washers/rear wiper/washer, cruise-control, remote keyless entry, power windows/all express up/down, anti-theft alarm/immobilizer, dual illuminated vanity mirrors, grab handles above each door, dual map lamps, storage slots in each door, rear reading lamps, foglamps, front and rear carpeted floor mats.

‘THE COMPACT FIVE DOOR SEGMENT HAS A NEW PLAYER’

Hyundai is once again shaking up the growing compact five-door wagon segment with the introduction of the much improved forth-generation Accent compact five-door wagon. Available as a four-door sedan with a trunk, or a five-door wagon, I tested the more versatile and popular five-door SE and came away very impressed with the overall build quality, design, performance, attention to detail, versatility, and high-fuel mileage ratings.

To be taken seriously in a popular and growing segment with an all-new segment vehicle you must either match or overtake the competition in several important aspects and the all-new Accent SE does just that.

It is the first vehicle to receive the all-new 1.6 liter GDI ‘Gamma’ GDI (gas-direct injection) engine that also features DOHC’s, dual continuous variable-valve timing and an active ECO system to increase fuel efficiency. This high-tech engine is paired with Hyundai’s proprietary six-speed automatic with sequential shifting, or a six-speed manual transmission meaning it is the first vehicle in its segment to offer a GDI engine for increased power and fuel efficiency. That equates to the most powerful engine in it’s class at 138hp, and the ‘best-in-class’ fuel economy of 30mpg/city and 40mpg/highway.

The exterior styling has been refined and is more inline with the Sonata and Elantra. The company’s distinctive and upscale ‘Fluidic Sculpture’ design is highlighted up front with Hyundai’s signature grille and lower air-intake. The large, uniquely formed headlights are deeply cut into the fenders and hood. Big foglamps sit nicely at the lower sides of the front bumper bottom. The upscale silhouette is highlighted with steeply raked A-pillars, flowing B-pillar and arrowhead rear window finisher. The door shows a deep upward crease through all of the door handles and a scalloped lower section. The side mirrors are also aerodynamic and meet seamlessly with the lower A-pillars. From the rear you’ll see a top mounted spoiler, rear hatchback and seamless bumper with a single exhaust tip peering out from under the right side of the lower bumper.

Taming the all-new 138hp inline 4-cylinder engine is a MacPherson strut independent suspension up front with coil springs, twin-tube gas-charged shocks and stabilizer bar.

The rear setup features a torsion axle setup with coil springs, mono-tube gas-charged shocks and stabilizer bar. The sporty character of the drive is handled nicely with Hyundai’s electric/mechanical rack & pinion steering system that gives an excellent feel for the road and very quick response to your steering inputs.

Slowing the all-new Accent SE down from speed are excellent four-wheel, power-assisted steel disc brakes. Up front are 10.1 inch vented discs clamped with dual-piston calipers and 10.3 inch solid discs in the rear clamped with single-piston calipers. Your braking control and power are enhanced with standard ABS, EBD, BA, Electronic Stability Control, and Traction Control.

The all-new 2012 Hyundai Accent SE rides on large 16X6 inch alloy wheels wrapped with 195/50R16 inch all-season radial tires for excellent grip and a compliant ride.

The new Accent doesn’t skip a beat on the interior with a simple yet elegant setup for both driver and passengers. All of the surfaces are ‘soft-touch’ and aluminum tone trim pieces are found on around the center stack, door switch plates, and center console. Inside both the center stack and center console are shiny black piano trim pieces that gives the look of more luxury and elegance. The three-spoke, leather-wrapped tilt/telescoping steering wheel feels perfect in your hands. The stick shifter is also covered in shiny black piano trim to complete the upscale looks.

The instrument cluster is large and easy to see and read with all vital information straight-ahead. All switches, dials, levers and buttons are within easy reach and easy to use besides being fully illuminated for safe nighttime travel.

The rear seating area features a 60/40-split bench seat that can accommodate three adults and when folded flat opens up the already large storage space making the all-new 2012 Accent a class-above in total volume-a subcompact car with the roominess of a compact and best-in-class five-door cargo volume of 47.5cu.ft.

The new Accent reinvigorates the subcompact segment, similar to what the game-changing Sonata and Elantra have done in their segments.
