The way things are looking, electric sports cars or hybrid variations are the way of the future. Infiniti has taken a leap into the future to tease us with a new extended-range electric sports car concept today. The new electric sports car, slated for an introduction at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in March, will expand Infiniti’s ‘inspired performance’ mantra for the brand even further. The Concept will show the latest direction that the brand’s stylists will be taking in the future, says Infiniti vice president Andy Palmer.

Infiniti definitely has a unique style to their cars and from the looks of the teaser images here. They are no way swaying too far from what is already ‘working’ for them.

The theory of a mid-engine layout is in play while we already know Nissan has the proper arsenal of electric vehicle bits from the Leaf. Not to mention, the use of a bespoke mid-engine platform in the performance-oriented Leaf Nismo RC concept may be use in a new extended range electric sports car.

We do not see anything stopping Infiniti from making this extended-range electric sports car come to fruition in some form. After-all, the Nissan GT-R seems to be getting all of the ‘performance kudos’ lately in the Nissan/Infiniti family. Maybe it is time they had an ‘attention-getter’ sports car sporting the Infiniti badge for a change.

NEW SPORTS CAR CONCEPT

– Low Emission and High Performance; Geneva Motor Show Reveal –

LOS ANGELES (Nov. 17, 2011) – A highly advanced, range-extending electric sports car concept is under development at Infiniti. Set to emerge at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2012, this vehicle is being created to extend the potential for high performance, low emission electric cars.

Explaining the strategy behind the concept, Andy Palmer, Executive Vice President, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd and Infiniti said: “At the Geneva Show next year, we will present our vision for a totally new kind of inspired premium performance car. Infiniti already has hybrid and clean diesel models on sale. And with an all-electric sedan on the way, the natural next step was to push the boundaries where performance and the environment intersect.”

Before the unprecedented rise of gas prices, the SUV segment had a plethora of potential buyers. In the past few years consumers have taken to smaller vehicles and car-based SUVs (crossovers). The decision to switch to a smaller vehicle leaves only a few choices remaining if you want a powerful, roomy and luxurious SUV. One choice that remains to steal the heart of large SUV buyers is the new 2011 Infiniti QX56.

Infiniti has continued to offer a large SUV despite the slowing sales during upswings of gas prices. Although their decision is not solely reliant on gas prices, there are only a few available frame-on-body SUVs left to roam the earth. The 2011 Infinity QX56 is a complete redesign from the outgoing 2010 model. New innovations have kept the QX-mammoth alive instead of going the way of extinct frame-on-body vehicles. With better handling, improved fuel economy and luxury refinement, the QX56 has managed to take a distinguished road, which appeals to consumers who live the up-sized lifestyle.

Traditionally Infiniti vehicles are well endowed in the technology game with new innovations such as distance control assist, lane departure warning/intervention, blind-spot warning, and even a hydraulic Body Motion Control System. All of these techie features are available on the new 2011 Infiniti QX56 taking safety and comfort to new heights.

My new 2011 Infiniti QX56 4WD test vehicle was equipped with several options including the Deluxe Touring Package, Technology Package, Theater Package and large 22-inch wheel package. Opting for a QX56 with the Deluxe Touring Package gets you climate-controlled front seats, Mocha Burl Trim, Remote tip-up third row seats, semi-aniline leather-appointed seating and Hydraulic Body Motion Control, and 22-inch wheels and tires. The large 22-inch wheels/tires add to the stability and handling of the QX56 but may prove to give somewhat of a harsh ride when compared to the standard 20-inch wheels and tires. The Hydraulic Body Motion control does a great job to keep the body of the big QX56 from rocking and rolling especially at highway speeds. The overall objective of the body motion control system is to prevent occupants from getting carsick. Additionally, it provides extra handling capabilities keeping the body level in corners by increasing hydraulic pressure to the outer dampers.

There is no denying the mass of the QX56 but somehow Infiniti manages to give the driver the ability to navigate a nearly 6,000 pound vehicle as you would any large car. The beefy 5.6-liter V8 engine produces a healthy 400 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque through a competent 7-speed automatic transmission. Manual shift control with rev-matched downshifts is standards giving a properly equipped QX56 4WD model the ability to tow up to 8,500 pounds. Without any extra dead weight in tow, the QX56 is able to run from 0 to 60mph in 6.8 seconds which is quick for such a big vehicle.

For this type of performance from a large SUV expect to pay dearly at the gas pump. My 2011 QX56 tester averaged 15.5 mpg. EPA estimates for the QX56 are 14mpg city and 20mpg highway. I could never get the EPA highway estimate of 20mpg even when attempting to perform my version of hyper-milling.

Parking the QX56 can be an easy task provided you are utilizing Infiniti’s remarkable around-view monitor system. The around-view system uses a series of 4 cameras mounted in the front, rear and under the review-side mirrors. All-together these wide-angle cameras compile a usable vehicle-placement image in a virtual 360 degree view of ‘around the car’. When compared to a smaller crossover vehicle, the system proves to be exceptionally beneficial for the QX56 when its added mass is factored in. Visibility is already good with plenty of side and rear window real-estate. The blind-spot warning system proves to be valuable when you have a full-house of occupants in the rear of the QX56. It gives you peace of mind when switching lanes, knowing that your blind spot is clear. In the event that a vehicle is in your blind spot and you use your turn signal, the system will sound an audible warning and flash the indicator.

The new Infiniti QX56 is all about giving the driver and all other passengers a temporary stay in the lap of luxury. The seating appointments are the best in its class considering you have a choice of an 8 seating configuration with a split 2nd row bench or a 7-passenger setup with two captain’s chairs. The 3rd row is exceptionally easy to get into but is somewhat cramped when you have two other adults just as tall as me sitting side-by-side. Up front and in the 2nd row you have more than enough space for virtually anyone no matter how big or small.

The rear cargo area is a breeze to configure for large items by using the power-fold seat buttons. The power rear lift gate is user-friendly with innovative pinch-detection weather strips that will automatically reverse the lift gate when closing if an object is sensed.

All interior controls and HVAC adjustments are easy to read and control. Other features on my 2011 QX56 include heated power-folding rearview mirrors, rain-sensing windshield wiper, sunroof, running boards, automatic bi-xenon headlights, foglights and a Class IV trailer hitch.

Exterior styling on the new 2011 QX56 is a big deportation from the outgoing 2010 model as well as the Nissan Armada that the previous generation QX56 was derived from. For the new 2011 QX56, the design and mechanics share very little with the Armada. Some will agree that the exterior styling of the new 2011 Infiniti QX56 can be summed up as “different” and “unique.” It is not much denying that the new QX56 has its own style that has a few characteristics from other Infiniti models. Either way, in the case of the QX56, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. We will leave it as that.

Over-all the new 2011 Infiniti QX56 is a better Cadillac Escalade. Those in the market for a body-on-frame luxury SUV do not have many choices but they would not want to pass the QX56 by. A starting price of just over $59,000 for a new QX56 makes for an attractive buy. Loaded up to the gills with all of the tech gadgetry and 22-inch rollers expect to pay north of $75,000.

‘NO LIMITS’

The 2011 Infiniti G37S convertible features seductive coupe-like styling, high-performance driving, a three-piece folding hardtop and a new limited edition package.

Though only in its third year of production, the seductively styled open-air Infiniti G convertible adds a new level of excitement in 2011 with the addition of the new G37S convertible ‘limited-edition’ version, featuring an array of exclusive features ranging from special exterior enhancements to a Monaco Red leather-appointed interior with red tone Maple accents. Other enhancements for 2011 include a revised front fascia design with the foglamps moved from inside the headlight to the lower fascia area; revised 19in. alloy wheels and two new exterior colors-Lapis Blue and Malbec Black, the color of my incredible G37S ride.

Looking and driving the new 2011 G37S limited-edition hardtop convertible truly rejuvenated my spirits with its seductive styling and exciting performance as only a handful of vehicles have in the past-plus the three-piece power retractable hardtop is designed to look as good with the top up as down.

The G convertible maintains a coupe-like silhouette with the top up through the use of a special three-piece ‘clamshell’ retractable hardtop, which allows for both a stylish shorter rear overhang and a low trunk lid. Compared to the G coupe, the G convertible utilizes unique body panels from the A-pillar back, along with a 1.1 inch wider overall width, wider rear track and modified rear suspension. Along with stunning G coupe-like proportions, the G convertible offers signature Infiniti styling cues such as flowing front fender curves, a wave-style aluminum hood, L-shaped HID bi-functional xenon headlights with integrated foglamps. The limited-edition model adds a unique front fascia with a ‘Midnight Black’ grille and uniquely formed and deeper side sills. In the rear, the taillights are unique to the G convertible, incorporating an inner ‘circle of light’ for added style. The chrome rear trunk finisher incorporates both an integrated high-mount stoplight and the small camera for the standard RearView Monitor System.

The automatic top opening/closing sequences takes approximately 30 seconds from start to finish. The open/close toggle switch is located on the center console, just behind the transmission shifter lever.

The design of the G37S limited-edition convertible takes into consideration the typical challenges to fully enjoying open air driving, such as added interior noise and turbulence, added heating and cooling system demand and even the fact that the seating surfaces can get hot in the sun or cool at night.

The G37S limited-edition convertible’s interior design combines sophistication, craftsmanship and thoughtfulness with unique, systems created to enhance the open-air driving experience. The driver-oriented cockpit features an Infiniti signature instrument panel design with Infiniti electroluminescent instrumentation with a while illuminated color scheme, integrated multi-function information driver computer and signature Infiniti clock.

The double hand-stitched leather-covered, power tilt/telescoping steering wheel is designed for maximum comfort and usability and feels great in your hands and features audio and cruise control buttons. Solid magnesium paddle shifters are located on the steering column for fast gear changes using the 7-speed automatic transmission.

Custom Maple Accents trim is located across the dashboard, doors and around the center console for an elegant look. Comfortable and supportive custom Monaco Red heated/cooled/8-way power adjustable bucket seats up front are exclusive with the limited-edition model. The cockpit also includes high-grip aluminum foot pedals and foot rest giving it a sportier look. A power walk-in device with position memory provides easy access to the 2nd row seats (the front seats move forward automatically at the touch of a button to allow passengers into the rear seats.

The limited-edition’s long list of comfort and convenient features include Infiniti’s Intelligent Key with push button start/stop, an adaptive dual zone climate control system air conditioning system that adjusts to provide optimal comfort with the top up or down, a rearview monitor, cruise-control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated/power remote sideview mirrors, power express up/down windows, power door locks, auto on/off headlights, rear window defroster, memory system for the driver’s seat, steering wheel and outside mirrors, driver’s seat steering wheel and outside mirror synchronization, dual lighted vanity mirrors, dual map lights, center console with dual cupholders/storage bin with padded armrest, door storage slots, lighted glovebox, front/rear carpeted floor mats, rain-sensing wipers, Infiniti hard-drive navigation system with touch-screen, DVD video playback, 3-D building graphics and Birdview Lane Guidance, speed limit advisory, streaming audio, Bluetooth, XM NavTraffic/XM NavWeather, Zagat Survey, and Infiniti voice recognition.

The limited-edition G37S hardtop convertible also comes with an outstanding audio system-a 13-speaker Infiniti Bose Open Air Sound System with AudioPilot 2.0 technology that automatically optimizes EQ settings for open/closed top positions. The system’s special Bose Front seat Personal Speakers, mounted in the front seat head restraints, enable superior front audio quality regardless of the top position. A 2.0 GB Music Box (800MB for music storage) is also included.

On the mechanical side the limited-edition G37S is also outstanding. Like the G coupe and G sedan, the G37S limited-edition convertible’s outstanding dynamic performance credentials start with a combination of its advanced FM platform and award-winning V6 engine. The 3.7 liter V6 all-aluminum, DOHC engine with VVEL (variable valve event and lift), is rated at 325hp and 267lb.ft. of torque. The VVEL system combines hydraulic-controlled variable valve timing and electronically controlled variable lift on the intake side, helping to improve not only performance and response but also emissions and fuel economy.

The engine is mated to an electronically controlled 7-speed automatic rear-wheel drive transmission with manual mode, downshift rev matching, Drive Sport mode, Adaptive Shift Control and solid magnesium paddle shifters to quickly change gears, up or down.

The car’s excellent responsive handling and ride performance is provided by its unique and advanced FM (front mid-ship) platform design, which optimizes front/rear weight balance and creates a stable foundation for the 4-wheel independent suspension. The front suspension is a double-wishbone design with a single pivot lower wishbone, a long upper link, dual-flow path gas-charged shocks, coil springs and a stabilizer bar. The multi-link rear suspension design separates the dual flow path gas-charged shocks and springs and there is also a stabilizer bar. This unique suspension design helps to minimize alignment changes and reduce suspension friction for nimble handling unlike other hardtop convertibles and a smooth ride.

Responsive steering is provided by a vehicle-speed-sensing rack & pinion system, with a sport-tuned steering gear. The car quickly goes where you want it to go with just a little pull on the wheel, just like a racecar even though this is a much heavier luxury performance hardtop convertible.

Strong brakes help slow the car down from speed. Up front are 14 inch vented discs clamped with aluminum four-piston calipers, and 13.8 inch vented discs clamped with two-piston calipers, all embossed with Infiniti lettering. Standard ABS, EBD, BA, Vehicle Dynamic Control and Traction Control all work together to keep you in control of your forward direction on slick or slippery pavement.

The new limited-edition G37S hardtop convertible rides on unique 19X8.5 front and 19X9 inch lightweight cast aluminum alloy wheels wrapped with sticky Bridgestone 225/45R19 front and 245/40R19 inch low-profile, high-performance tires in the rear for excellent grip and a smooth ride.

All four occupants are kept safe. An advanced airbag system with dual-stage supplemental front airbags with seatbelt and occupant classification sensors is standard, along with door-mounted curtain side-impact airbags; front-seat mounted side-impact airbags and front seat active head restraints. The rear seat includes fixed head restraints with Pop-up Roll Bars. The car also features reinforced front side members, front pillars and body sills.

For the discerning, enthusiast driver who wants the sun and wind in your face plus the four-season weather-proof ability of a hardtop convertible, including the latest and best luxury and personal convenience technologies, the new 2011 Limited-Edition Infiniti G37S is the car for you.

The all-new 2011 Infiniti G37 IPL (Infiniti Performance Line) embarks on a new path that Infiniti has set in order to reach out to more enthusiasts. Those who want a little more out of their performance luxury-sports coupe have something to choose from in the all-new 2011 Infiniti G37 IPL.

The new 2011 Infiniti G37 IPL is a one-of-a-kind vehicle highlighting Infiniti’s inspired performance. The new G37 IPL does not aim to directly compete with Benz AMG or BMW Motorsport. It does however offer a little something extra for those enthusiasts who are on the fence when potentially considering a “step above the norm” when it comes to a luxury-sports coupe.

When I first accepted the delivery of the new 2011 Infiniti G37 IPL coupe I was skeptical at first wondering if the IPL edition would be much of a difference from a normal G37 Journey with a sports package. After just the first day in the G37 IPL coupe I was convinced that Infiniti not only added stylish body fascias, but they gave it more power via a retuned ECU and dual exhaust system (18 horsepower & 6 ft lbs. of torque more than stock for a total of 348 horsepower and 276 ft lbs.), dark-finished 19-inch wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza RE050A rubber, red-stitched leather appointed seats and IPL badges on the rear and engine cover.

The new G37 IPL coupe is all about vehicle enhancement instead of being a road-hog demon with its crosshairs on the linking’s of Benz AMG, BMW Motorsport, Cadillac CTS-V or even Audi’s S line. The G37 IPL is on more of a level playing field with a BMW 335i or maybe the new Benz C 350 coupe. Driving the new G37 IPL coupe adds a bit of lively excitement. With a little extra power and deeper exhaust tone adding a considerable amount of drone when cruising around town. The looks help a bit also as heads turn recognizing that this G is not your ordinary Journey and Sports package equipped G37 coupe.

Adding just 18 horsepower and 6 ft. lbs. of torque to the G37 coupe equation should be just what some G37 enthusiasts have been craving without going to aftermarket bolt-ons. You even get a nice set of dark-finished wheels and a more aggressive suspension setup.

The all-new 2011 Infiniti G37 IPL coupe performed slightly better than any G37 coupe I have driven. I noticed that the handling dynamics are bit crisper while the added power lets the quick yet smooth-shifting 7-speed automatic bang through the gears just at red-line. Not to mention, you can put the auto box into sport mode and bang through the gears yourself through the magnesium coated paddle shifters mounted on the steering column. The new G37 IPL coupe can be had with a wonderful short shifting 6-speed manual transmission, same as found in the normal G37 coupe or sedan.

Having driven the Nissan Nismo 370Z previously it is easy to say that the G37 IPL coupe is a plush version of the Z in a way. They both share the same wonderful FM (front-midship) platform and VQ series 3.7-liter V6 engine. For EPA gas mileage figures, the new G37 IPL coupe manages to get a decent 19 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. During my drive around town, mostly city driving, my best was about 22 mpg. My short highway commute on average came in around 26 mpg, not too bad for Infiniti’s first “performance line” car.

There is not much of a difference in the normal G37 coupe interior trim vs. the trim inside the G37 IPL coupe. My test vehicle’s Monaco red leather seats really added to the G37 IPL’s luxury and sports appeal. The seating surfaces are comfy and the front buckets provide just enough lateral support when putting the G37 IPL into the turns.

Infiniti is known for their abundant amounts of technology that find itself extremely useful. My Infiniti G37 IPL coupe comes with all of the G37 Journey equipment including an excellent 9.3GB hard drive based navigation and Bose audio system. The bright 7-inch LCD touch screen combines the display for navigation, audio, climate control, and many other vehicle settings. The integration and redundant controls make it easy to quickly change settings even when driving. Other creature comforts found on the IPL edition of the G37 are heated power seats (12-way driver 8-way passenger), bi-functional Xenon HID headlights, integrated fog lights, power tilt-telescoping steering wheel, memory driver’s seat/mirror/steering wheel, power sunroof, dual zone climate controls, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming connectivity, intelligent key with push button start, and sport brakes (4 piston fronts 2 piston rears).

Rear seating, just as in any other G37 coupe, is usable in the G37 IPL but the two occupants must not be anywhere near 6 feet tall or they could be asking for trouble in the legroom department. Aside from the rear seats, driver and passenger can find the optimal seating position ready to take on long journeys without discomfort. Visibility may be a slight task when checking your blind spot but the G37 has proven to be a big improvement over the 370Z for obvious reasons.

The exterior color of my 2011 Infiniti G37 IPL coupe, Malbec Black, is stunning. The color, depending on the way the sunlight hits the surface, appears to have a purple tint with a high-gloss clear coat. If the IPL styling does not get your attention at first glance, the Malbec Black color will do it.

Pushing the new G37 IPL coupe to its limit is a daring task if you choose to take off the stability and traction control. The G37 IPL coupe handles with confidence and even more if perhaps you leave the stability control on. If left on, the stability control kicks in somewhat strong barely letting the G37 IPL coupe bark its tires. Turn everything off and you can break the rears lose. Don’t expect large plumes of smoke with the 7-speed automatic, which seems to have the tendency to mull power through the torque converter from a standstill.

In the task of Infiniti finding a starting point for a new performance line of cars, the new 2011 G37 IPL coupe is the ideal choice. If any car can gain some winning performance brand recognition for Nissan’s luxury division, it is the new G37 IPL coupe.

The all-new 2011 Infiniti G37 IPL coupe has a long list of standard features that are typically part of optional packages on the normal G37 coupe. The only option on my G37 IPL coupe test vehicle was R Spec high friction brake pads ($370 option) bringing the price to $51,095. The G37 IPL coupe’s price point, considering all of the standard features, is slightly lower than comparably configured vehicles in the same class from BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi. If you have already made the choice to load your new G coupe up to the gills, purchasing a new 2011 G37 coupe IPL version is the way you’d want to go. A huge benefit to it all, you will be driving the precursor to many new exciting Infiniti Performance Line vehicles to come.

Ever since the conception of Infiniti’s sporty luxury crossover, many consumers have grown to like the unique styling and aggressive demeanor of the FX. First introduced in 2003, Nissan injected many of their Infiniti luxury branded vehicles with the front-midship platform of the Z sports car, transforming the FX crossover into what was touted as one of the most sporty luxury crossover vehicles on the market. Since then, the FX has progressed into its newfound bionic Cheetah skin attempting to appeal to a broader audience.

The all-new 2011 Infiniti FX remains virtually unchanged from the previous 2010 model year. The current body style was introduced as a 2009 model and later updated with added navigation and infotainment system features such as Bluetooth audio streaming, XM weather updates, and a refreshed graphic interface for all 2010 models. My new 2011 Infiniti FX35 test vehicle featured the carryover 3.5-liter VQ-series V6 engine with 303 horsepower and 262 ft. lbs. of torque.

Infiniti has formulated the perfect blend of sports and luxury in their vehicles, and the new 2011 FX is evident of that very formula. The firm ride, much improved over the outgoing 2008 model year, is refined without sacrificing any of the sporty handling characteristics you might expect from even a sports-coupe. The FX35 rides well and feels light giving the driver the extra security one might be lacking in other crossover vehicles in the luxury segment. The ride and handling characteristics vary greatly when comparing the FX35 to a loaded-up FX50S equipped with Continuous Dampening Control (CDC). Infiniti engineers took into consideration consumer feedback from the first generation FX and made major improvements in the new FX’s suspension system. They used lighter weight aluminum components and retuned the shocks and springs. Over-all, the new 2011 FX35 rides a lot better than the previous generation regardless of the wheel and tire sizes.

My 2011 Infiniti FX35 rear-wheel-drive model featured 20-inch wheels wrapped in large 265/50/R20 V-rated Bridgestone all-season rubber. The stylish 20-inch, 5-spoke aluminum wheels add physique to the looks of the FX35. An optional torque vectoring all-wheel-drive system can be added for those who want a little extra traction in inclement conditions. Mind you, there is still a snow mode on the standard 7-speed automatic transmission in both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations, which will regulate power output and wheel slip, for maximum traction in slippery snow conditions.

Unique styling is somewhat of an understatement when describing the look of the 2011 Infiniti FX. Nissan is known for their unique exteriors as of late, and it has trickled down to their prestigious Infiniti luxury brand. There is no mistaking the FX for what it is which can be considered a good thing to those who want to drive something a little different. There are a number of luxury crossovers that have a tendency to come off as boring or vanilla, and the FX is neither. Even the functional side vents, which help to reduce drag, add to the FX’s sporty and distinctive appeal.

The 2011 Infiniti FX’s interior has received the royal treatment. Not only does it combine many of the Infiniti car line’s stylish dashboard layout, but it adds its own unique wrap-around design. My Infiniti FX was equipped with Java-colored leather seating where the same color flowed through the dashboard at either ends. The black-Java color contrast is somewhat perceived as classy and eloquent. This is something Infiniti was not always known for but now can claim its rightful place offering a quality luxury interior. The climate controlled (heated and cooled) front seats are comfy providing just enough lateral support.

Rear seating leg room can be a mixed bag mostly dependent on how far back the front passengers adjust their seats. However, there is enough room to comfortably seat 3 adults in the back seats, provided that they are “average” sized. Front legroom is plentiful allowing front occupants to stretch their legs on long drives.

Infiniti has packed the new FX with plenty of technology that not only adds to the passenger’s and driver’s comfort and drivability, but also aids in the safety department as well. New innovative driving assist features such as distance control assist (DCA), intelligent braking assist (IBA), lane departure warning (LDW), intelligent cruise control, and adaptive front lighting system (AFS) all help the driver stay alert and step-in as necessary to help avoid an accident. All of these features were part of my test vehicle’s optional $2,900 technology package. Together, distance control assist, intelligent cruise control, intelligent braking assist, and a forward collision warning system rely on a radar mounted below the front bumper to detect objects of other vehicles ahead of the FX. When the FX approaches a vehicle or object too fast the forward collision warning flashes and sounds an audible beep. If the vehicle senses that a crash is imminent and unavoidable, intelligent brake assist will apply extra brake force/pressure to lessen the severity of the accident. Intelligent brake assist is also beneficial during emergency braking when you are about to plow into a car in front of you, by automatically adding extra braking pressure as you depress the brake pedal. Lane departure warning can be set to automatically brake the opposite side wheels and sound an audible beep when a small camera mounted above the windshield detects you moving out of your lane across the painted lines in the road. Intelligent cruise control keeps a set distance from the vehicle in front of you and can actually bring the vehicle to a complete stop if needed.

Driving the new 2011 Infiniti FX35 is fun and daring at times due to its agile nature. The FX makes you want to jump out in traffic and act like a hoon until you realize that your family is still strapped in the back seat, and starts to developing a funny looking expression on their faces clearly not agreeing with what you are about to do. The smooth V6 engine in the FX35 is eager to scream, and the smooth and competent 7-speed automatic lets it spin, all the way to redline. The 7-speed transmission does suffer from some dead spots around 30 to 40 mph where flooring the pedal does not upshift like it does at other speeds. Most times, when I demanded power, the 7-speed transmission found the optimal gear quickly, Around 30 to 40 mph it acted like it was confused and refused to upshift until the vehicle slowly reached 40+ mph. At any other speed my Infiniti FX35 test vehicle was eager to run hard. 0-60 mph times come in around 6.5 seconds which is decent for a mid-sized luxury crossover just over 4,000 pounds. The 5.0-liter V8 equipped FX50 does a sprint to 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds but at a cost of massive amounts of premium fuel. The FX35 gets a decent 16 mph city and 23 mpg highway. During mostly city driving I was able to get a solid 21.5 mpg and on the highway my best figure was 24 mpg. If you opt for the V8 FX50 expect those numbers to go down to about 14 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway.

New for 2011 model year FX crossovers is a greatly desired rear power rear liftgate. Now standard on all 2011 model year FX vehicles is a full-power rear liftgate, which was not added until half way into the 2011 model year.

The all-new 2011 Infiniti FX35 is an appealing and sporty luxury crossover. The FX35 is a great alterative to the Lexus RX, BMW X6, and even the Porsche Cayenne V6 that won’t break the bank even when you include several creature comfort options. My 2011 Infiniti FX RWD model was fully loaded with the exception of all-wheel-drive tipping the scale at $52,875 including destination charges. The FX35 starts at only $42,600, which makes it a bargain when compared to many of its luxury crossover competitors even when comparably configured.

Image: Infiniti

As one of the top drivers in Formula 1 (and the reigning world champion), Red Bull Renault driver Sebastian Vettel could easily afford to buy any car he wanted. Contractual obligations probably encourage him, strongly, to be seen in a vehicle from one of the teams sponsors, so you’d expect him to drive a Renaultsport-tuned Megane, or perhaps an Infiniti M56.

He doesn’t. In fact, Vettel’s personal ride of choice is an Infiniti FX50 crossover, albeit a specially-tuned one. Seb’s ride makes a bit more power than stock, and it rides on a stiffer suspension than the average Infiniti grocery-getter. He’s made a few tweaks to the interior as well, which is easy to do if you have an unlimited budget to work with. Short of breaking into an F1 paddock and hot-wiring Seb’s ride, you can’t really drive his FX50, but you’ll soon be able to buy one that Vettel’s consulted on.

The full reveal of the Infiniti FX50 Sebastian Vettel Edition won’t take place until the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show, but we know the crossover will get a new carbon-fiber front spoiler, an odd-looking rear wing, unique wheels (probably 20-inch), and an aerodynamically enhanced rear diffuser. It’ll make more power, too, although how much more than the stock FX50’s 390 horsepower and 369 ft-lb of torque remains to be seen. Reportedly, power output should be enough for the FX to reach a top speed of 186 mph.

Expect a firmer ride and an interior unlike anything else in the Infiniti catalog. You’ll get custom “Sebastian Vettel” badging, too, just in case you forget who signed off on the content of the special edition. There’s even rumor of a carbon-fiber trimmed and F1 inspired steering wheel, but we hope it’s not nearly as complex as the wheels from actual F1 cars.

We’re fans of the FX50, but we have a hard time imagining a “sporty” version of the Infiniti crossover. At least the styling isn’t too over-the-top, with the exception of the JC-Whitney-discount-auto-parts-catalog inspired rear wing. Does anyone really think that looks good, or will produce an actual aerodynamic benefit?

Our good friends at Identity Designs in Jacksonville, FL, who happens to supply us with all of our graphics and printing needs, recently did a matte silver 3M vinyl wrap on a new Infiniti G37. The remarkable vinyl wrap job exceeds expectations taking today’s faddish matte colored exteriors to a new level.

The guys at Identity Designs took the extra time and effort to make this a unique wrap job. Not one seam, not one flaw, just plain perfection. Identity Designs utilized the best material in the business starting with 3M’s latest 1080 Matte Silver vinyl. They even took the liberty of wrapping the entire door jams making this project turn out better than one would with traditional painting. There is no doubt that the customer base for complete vinyl wrapped cars has increased to record levels. Luckily, you can still find a shop to do the job right. We welcome you to check out the photos of this project before and after below.

One of the things that’s led to Infiniti’s success in the luxury market is the handling of its automobiles. Although a few previous models (like the I30 and I35) were built on a front wheel drive platform, the bulk of Infiniti’s cars have been built with a front engine, rear drive configuration. That’s given the automaker the semi-official designation as “the BMW of Japan,” but now Autoweek is reporting that a change may be in the works.

Infiniti, it seems, wants to adopt a front engine, front drive layout for future vehicles. Per Infiniti’s VP of Product Planning, Larry Dominque, “customers really don’t care about the platform beneath the car;” in other words, Infiniti customers are more concerned with styling and interior room than with how their cars handle. I’m not sure I buy into that logic, since every Infiniti customer I’ve ever met knows perfectly well the difference between front wheel drive, rear wheel drive and all wheel drive. Take away one of the things that makes Infiniti unique, and you’ll remove a lot of potential customers from showrooms.

If you guessed that profit was one motive behind the move, you’d be correct. Front engine, front drive platforms are cheaper to build, but they do offer the buyer greater interior room since FWD vehicles can be built with a flat rear floor. They can generate better fuel economy, too, which is a critical concern of all automakers thanks to the pending CAFE standards. Dominque insists that “the performance they need” can be delivered via a front wheel drive platform, but I’d caution him on that point. The performance Infiniti thinks it needs and the performance that Infiniti’s customers expect may be two different things.

Before you start flooding Infiniti with e-mails and phone calls, Dominque insists that Infiniti’s G series and M series, its staple sport sedans, will remain on a front engine, rear drive platform, which leaves the FWD door open for vehicles like the new JX crossover. We’d fight the switch to FWD on sport sedans to the death, but if Infiniti decides that front drive is best for their largest luxury crossovers, I don’t think fans will be storming corporate headquarters with pitchforks and torches.
