Bigger and More Curvaceous

The new M56 is based on the second-generation FM platform that is currently used in the Nissan 370Z, Infiniti’s FX50 and G37. The 2011 Infiniti M56 has minor changes in the length and height, while the front track increases 1.4 inches and the rear by 0.8 inch. More obvious, Nissan widened the M56 by 2 inches and retained the same wheelbase. With these adjustments the 2011 M56 suggests “premium” in the way that only a roomier cabin can.

The soft, flowing lines create a nice visual reference to the Essence show car and the smaller G37 sedan. The new curves have a way of making the 2009 M appear dated, narrow and even a bit dull. That car’s featureless silhouette is replaced by a seductively curved midsection made up of doors formed from aluminum. Removed are the awkwardly oversize taillights that were unmistakably the M45. The 2011 Infiniti M56 is elegant and easy on the eyes, though some might miss the more aggressive appearance of the old M.

Bigger Direct-Injection V8

Infiniti’s model naming convention remains well associated with the new M series, and in the 2011 Infiniti M56 this means a 5.6-liter V8 that pumps out a nice 420 horsepower and 417 foot-pounds of torque according to Nissan’s preliminary numbers.

This works out to an increase of 1.1 liters and nearly 100 horsepower in comparison to the current M45’s 4.5-liter V8, while the M37 models are equipped with the trusty VQ37 3.7-liter V6, making a nice 330 hp (that’s 27 hp more than the current V6-powered M) and 270 lb-ft of torque.

The Nissan VK engine architecture forms the basis of the M56’s V8, that exists in forms such as the 5.0-liter and 5.6 liter in the Infiniti FX50 and their SUV and Truck applications. The difference is in the numerous items, starting with unique cylinder heads on the M56’s power plant that feature direct injection and variable valve timing and lift. Nissan’s engineers report that these features make the new V8 about 10 percent more efficient than the outgoing 4.5-liter even though it has a large displacement.

This fine baby is has a seven-speed automatic transmission, the M56’s powertrain is undoubtedly capable. Gear changes are accurate and smooth and there’s plenty of torque across the rpm range. All this baby needs is a better exhaust note to help let this baby sound as good as she looks even if only on hard acceleration.

Agile Even At This Size

Nissan thinks the 2011 Infiniti M56 has class-leading interior space, and we agree. While other companies are shrinking the cabin, the M’s beltline throws this trend a curve. The outward visibility is surprisingly panoramic, at least from the front bucket. The open cabin layout, similar in design to the current M, serves to enhance the sense of ample space inside.

The double wishbone front suspension is carried over from the previous car. In the rear, a slightly revised rear suspension geometry that affords for more lateral stiffness, and although four-wheel steering is available, it differs slightly from the system offered on the G37 in the interests of functional transparency. Indeed, when pushing the M56 from apex to apex on some of Southern California’s best driving roads, this big sedan is snug and tight. Its steering weights up less abruptly than in other Nissan and Infiniti sedans, and it displays the willingness to change direction that is almost cat like for its size.

The lighter V6 under the hood of the M37 gives the chassis even more spryness, and the adaptive behavior of the seven-speed transmission as paired to the V6 is very nice. Sorry to say though but the M37x with all-wheel drive gives a sportier ride that the M56.

The M’s we were driving at the time of this test were still in the development stage. We have been notified that the personality of production versions of the 2011 Infiniti M56 will be enhanced through revisions to the throttle and transmission calibrations, and that they’re taking another pass at its exhaust note.

Nicely Furnished Accommodations

M models equipped with the Sport package will receive sexy 20-inch wheels with 245/40R20 summer tires, firmer springs and dampers, bigger brakes (14-inch front and 13.8-inch rear rotors, up from 12.6 and 12.1-inches in non-Sport models) with four-piston front calipers and four wheel-steering. Interior for Sport models include seats and gear selector, plus a steering wheel equipped with shift paddles (which I hate). Yes the M56 is still a luxury car — the Sport package’s underpinnings absorb the harsh thumps of crappy roads gracefully.

The M56 has a technically advanced cabin for a modern luxury sedan. Available features include lane departure correction, various settings for the powertrain’s snappiness, intelligent cruise control and a blind-spot intervention system. There’s even an air-conditioning system called Forest A/C that actively neutralizes offensive odors, modulates humidity and creates an oscillating breeze. You know, like in a wilderness.

With the absence of a true Infinity flagship I guess this will have to do for now.

Just about every car enthusiast loves the Nissan GT-R but as far as ownership goes, well, that’s another story. Either way, car enthusiasts love to hear the latest buzz about the infamous Godzilla “supercar” from Japan. The recent rumors that have been circulating for some time now will tell you that the next generation Nissan GT-R (2013 model year) will be a Hybrid. According to InsideLine, the 2013 Nissan GT-R will still use the same 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 plus a new battery powered electric drive powertrain as found in the 2009 Infiniti Essence Concept.

The total power from the new GT-R Hybrid should be about 600hp and the added weight from the setup of 2 electric motors would be shed in other places to keep the GT-R a worthy sports-car that can still shatter performance records.

It is also speculated that the Nissan GT-R Hybrid would cost upwards of $100,000usd and get 25 to 30 miles per gallon. With coupling in the electric drivetrain in the next GT-R, we expect performance numbers to only get better considering the added/instant torque you get from electric motors.

Do you think this is a good idea? What are your thoughts on a Nissan GT-R Hybrid?

The Infiniti M45 Sport is Infiniti’s ‘flagship’ model, highlighting the best from the luxury division of Nissan-quality, high-performance engineering, luxury accoutrements, and advanced electronics. Now is its fifth year of its second-generation design, the Infiniti M45 S sedan offers all the expected, plus innovative technology, and, most importantly, a powerful, athletic presence designed to excite the senses.

The Infiniti M is a mid-size premium sedan with an emphasis on performance, user-focused technology and a selection of engine, driveline and equipment choices all designed to meet the customers’ needs, budgets and desires. The Infiniti M offers a spacious cabin wrapped in a sporty and luxurious exterior design along with an exhilarating driving experience.

The 2010 Infiniti M is offered in M35 and M45 models, each available in rear-wheel drive or with Infiniti’s advanced Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system. The Infiniti M45 and M45x AWD feature a 325hp/336lb.ft. of torque, 4.5 liter DOHC VVT V8, while the M35 and M35x AWD come equipped with a 303hp/262lb.ft. of torque, 3.5 liter DOHC VVT V6. A special Sport Package (rear-wheel drive only) adds a higher level of sporty performance and style with an advanced Rear Active Steer System, a sport-tuned suspension, 19X9in. wheels, and other unique items I’ll get into later in this review.

The 2010 M remains a showcase of Infiniti’s advanced technology, including Intelligent Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Lane Departure Prevention (LDP) systems, an advanced Infiniti Hard Drive Navigation System with touch screen, 9.3GB Music Box hard drive for digital music storage and playback, and available XM NavTraffic.

The overall exterior design is unique and features both performance cues and elegance.

The grille features wide arched horizontal chrome slats to let lots of air into the engine bay and a prominent Infiniti logo near the top. Down below on the lower bumper is another intake to further enhance engine cooling. The low portion is curved down provide downforce for the front end and increasing front end stability. The uniquely formed headlamp cluster features HID adaptive lighting. Powerful, round fog lamps at the ends of the lower bumper have a mesh opening to direct airflow towards the front brakes keeping them cool to enhance braking force. Large 19X9in. aluminum alloy wheels wrapped with low profile Bridgestone Potenza performance tires nicely stuff the fender wells. From the side the M45S profile features a low, aggressive hood line that flows into the anchored shoulders and fluid roofline. The deeper side sills and stable, wide track posture creates a dynamic visual appeal to any enthusiast and lowers the center of gravity for even better stability.

Each door features a strip of chrome running the length of each door and a chrome strip surrounding the greenhouse glass to adding to the exterior elegance.

The M45S also comes with unique front and rear bumpers and highlighted in the rear with two dual exhaust tips and a center diffuser to help better manage the underside airflow for enhanced stability. The M45S’s long wheelbase and short overhangs provide a roomy interior and sporty exterior dimensions. Wide front and rear tracks not only improve handling but also enhance interior and trunk volume. The stiff and torsional, corrosion resistant and high strength steel unibody frame features aluminum alloy hood, deck lid and door structures to decrease total weight.

Inside, the intuitive design engages all of your senses in invigorating ways, combining a driver-oriented cockpit with a graceful, Infiniti level of luxury and design detail. You are surrounded with the finest leathers, aluminum and chrome trim pieces, chrome rings surrounding the door pulls and steering wheel spokes, aluminum plates on the dashboard and doors for the Sport model and dark African Rosewood for the regular M45 models. Visibility all around is excellent and the ‘Fine Vision’ electroluminescent gauges feature ‘gear-like’ rings around the 160mph speedometer and 8,000rpm tachometer for a mechanical look. Other interior highlights include the easy to use and understand unique center stack that flows into the center console with an aluminum shift gate housing a stubby, soft leather stick that feels great when operating.

Also feeling perfect in your hands is the power tilting/telescoping, leather-wrapped sporty steering wheel. Dual cupholders follow into the center armrest with dual-adjustable armrests, dual level storage and a 12-volt power outlet. The 12-power adjustable front bucket seats are comfortable and supportive. The Sport model receives extra side bolstering to keep you firmly in place during high-speed cornering that comes naturally to the M45S. Standard interior features also include cruise control with steering wheel switches, dual zone automatic climate control with micro filter and rear air vents and for the first time a front passenger seat control to direct air for your feet, your chest or both, just like the mode switch for the driver-side. A 7in. color LCD screen gives vehicle information/driver information readouts, grab handles above each door, Infiniti analog clock, one-touch auto-up/down windows, front seat entry/exit assist with cancellation capability, remote trunk release, rain-sensing windshield wipers, power door locks, remote keyless entry, illuminated entry/exit, locking glovebox, dual illuminated vanity mirrors, front door map pockets, dual map lamps, outside temperature readout, self-dimming reaview mirror, heated/remote control side mirrors, green-tinted windshield, chrome-grip pull-out door handles, two driver memory for the front seat, outside mirrors, steering column and radio station presets, sunglass holder, rear armrest with dual cupholders and storage, fully carpeted trunk with cargo net, thick cut-pile carpeting with front/rear floor mats, rear window defroster/timer, power sliding sunroof, rear power sunshade, retained accessory power, Infiniti Intelligent Key with push button start/stop and Infiniti Voice Recognition System which controls audio, vehicle information system, climate control, optional navigation system and Bluetooth phone.

The Sport model also receives aluminum-trimmed foot pedals, unique steering wheel and shift knob stitching, and unique front seat designs with Infiniti stitched on each seatback.

Options inside include heated/reclining rear seats, rear entertainment DVD system, an incredible sounding, advanced Bose Studio Surround sound system with digital 5.1-channel decoding and 14-speakers including two personal speakers mounted in the shoulders of each front seat. Also offered is an Infiniti Hard Drive Navigation system with touch-screen, 9.3GB Music Box Hard Drive for digital music storage and playback, and available XM NavTraffic with real-time traffic information. Enhancing safety is an optional RearView TV monitor and Intelligent Cruise Control.

I found the cabin to be sporty oriented, comfortable, easy to operate and luxurious, all at the same time, not an easy trick to accomplish and when driving at high triple-digit speeds or when challenging steep curving roads. That is what makes the M45S so special to drive.

Under the skin of the smartly designed M45S are a high-performance V8 engine, world-class suspension and powerful brakes. The powerful V8 engine features titanium valves, modular cylinder heads, microfinished crankshaft, lightweight pistons and super-silent single stage cam drive chain to help optimize performance. In addition, the V8 is outfitted with a variable length air induction system and continuously variable valve timing control to enhance the engine’s power delivery and operation efficiency. Just push your foot on the throttle and you’re quickly on your way. Infiniti says that the M45S will accelerate to 60mph from a standstill in just about 5.3sec.

This high-output V8 engine is hooked up to an advanced 5-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode, downshift rev matching and a new ‘drive sport’ mode that provides better acceleration feel and a more sporting driving experience. That driving experience is truly dynamic with exhilarating and exciting chills running up your back with the car’s quick acceleration and precise handling thanks to the unique, fully independent suspension system. The racecar derived double-wishbone setup up front includes sport-tuned coil springs, gas-charged shocks and a stabilizer bar. The multi-link setup in the rear includes sport-tuned coil springs, gas-charged shocks and stabilizer bar.

Joined up to a electronically-controlled vehicle-speed-sensing variable-assist power rack & pinion steering system with a performance gear, you quickly, precisely and effortlessly steer deep into corners aided with the Infiniti Rear Active Steer system, which uses precise, electronic motor-driven controls to turn the rear wheels. It is the only one available on a luxury sport sedan. The system helps improve the M45S’s handling performance by adjusting the geometry of the rear suspension according to steering input and vehicle speed. The system’s electronic control unit calculates the desired vehicle dynamics from a series of sensors, including vehicle speed and steering angle, and directs the system actuator to change the rear geometry by moving both rear suspension lower links. The result is a nimble steering response combined with luxury sedan stability and ride quality. You can feel not only the front end ‘bite’ when turning in, but also the rear gives the same feeling in steep curves at high speeds. I could shake the rear loose in even hairpin curves or corkscrew curves during my road test. It is really like driving on rails at high speed and when dicing through the curves. Amazing technology and its only available in the M Sport models. Standard vehicle dynamic control with traction control automatically adjusts brake pressure and engine torque during certain situations where the car is at its handling limit, helping you keep on your intended path. You can shut both systems off the let the rear end shake a bit when dicing through curves at high speed.

The perfectly balanced M45S features Infiniti’s enhanced next-generation FM (front-midship) platform that positions the engine behind the front axle resulting in an optimized front-to-rear weight balance which factors in weight transfer during high-speed driving maneuvers. The M45S’s 19X9in. large diameter wheels/tires are positioned out near the corners of the car, helping to further enhance handling.

Quickly and safely slowing the car down from speed are large, four-wheel vented disc brakes. Up front are 12.6in. vented discs clamped with dual-piston calipers, and 12…1in. vented rear discs clamped with single-piston calipers. Enhancing braking for and control are standard ABS, Electronic Brake Force Distribution and Brake Assist.

The M45S is available with Infiniti’s Lane Departure Warning (LDW and Lane Departure Prevention (LDP) systems. LDP utilizes the M45’s vehicle dynamic control system to apply slight brake pressure to the wheels opposite the side of the lane departure direction to help you return the car back toward the center of the travel lane. The LDP system uses a small camera installed behind the windshield to detect lane markers in front, calculate its position relative to those lane markers and warn you of a potential unintended lane departure with a visual display and audible buzzer. If you don’t return the vehicle in the direction of the center of the travel lane, the LDP system assists you with a gentle application of the brakes.

Standard safety features inside include Infiniti’s advanced airbag system with dual-stage front airbags with seatbelt and occupant classification sensors, front seat-mounted side impact airbags, roof-mounted curtain side impact airbags for front and rear-seat outboard occupant head protection, 3-point seat belts up front with load limiters/pretentioners, seat belt adjustable shoulder height anchors, front active head restraints, front/rear crumple zones, and steel beams in each door.

The M45S is one of my favorite sporty luxury sedan’s to test drive. It has everything that I need for full enjoyment, whether commuting to work, taking care of personal errands, an elegant night on the town, and when I want to quicken my pulse and experience true high-performance driving. It is the perfect blend and it shouldn’t break the bank with a base price for the M45 starting at $52,150.00, and the fully loaded M45 with the Sport Package, Technology Package and Advanced Technology Package costing only $60,815.00 including destination charges.

‘LETTING THE SHINE IN 12 MONTHS A YEAR’

When the road calls, the Infiniti G has always been quick to answer. Since its introduction in 2002, the G has been known for delivering the most rewarding combination of fluid design and exhilarating performance in its entry-level luxury segment. I was so enthralled with the car when I first tested it in 2002 that I drove straight to Monument Valley, Utah, some 400 miles away.

Now in 2009 the Infiniti brand brings to market wide-open exhilaration of wide-open motoring, its first convertible, the 2009 G37 and G37S.

The G convertible retains the Infiniti’s G’s sporty long cabin/short trunk proportions through the use of a three-piece steel hardtop, providing a ‘dual beauty’, that rare occurrence when a convertible looks as good with the top up or down.

The thoroughly modern G convertible’s exciting and comfortable interior includes standard leather-appointed seating, an optional Bose Open Air Sound system that dynamically changes equalization based on outside noise, top position, and vehicle speed. An Adaptive Dual Zone climate control system adjusts fan speed in accordance to top position and vehicle speed, and available Climate-Controlled seats that provide both heating and cooling functions, and this is just the start of the luxury, performance, high-tech and safety features standard and available in the all-new G convertible.

The G convertible maintains a coupe-like silhouette with the top up through the use of a special three-piece ‘clamshell’ retractable hardtop, which allows for use of a shorter rear overhang and low trunk lid. A drawback to this design is the miniscule amount of trunk space with the top down, just 1.99cu.ft. of storage space. That’s when the rear seats come in handy. The fully automatic top opening/closing sequence takes about 30sec. with the open/close toggle switch conveniently located on the center console.

Along with its stunning G Coupe-like proportions, the G convertible offers signature Infiniti styling cues such as flowing front fender curves, a wave-style aluminum hood, unique front fascia with double-arch grille and L-shaped HID bi-functional xenon headlights with integrated fog lamps.

The G37 convertible Sport 6MT and G37 convertible with the sport package include a unique front fascia/bumper design. In the rear, the taillights are unique to the

G convertible, incorporating an inner ‘circle of light’, for added style. The chrome rear trunk finisher incorporates both an integral high-mount stoplight and the small camera for the standard Rearview Monitor System. A full-perimeter spoiler is mounted to the edge of the trunk lid, and down below are 4-in. wide, twin-exhaust pipes nicely spread out below the bumper. From the side are flared front fenders, steeply raked windshield A-pillar and rear C-pillar, wide doors and deep lower side extensions that lower the stance and enhance handling capability.

The G convertible is offered with Infiniti’s advanced ‘self-healing’ scratch shield paint in eight exterior colors-vibrant red, Athens blue, liquid platinum, platinum graphite, black obsidian, moonlight white and two G convertible-exclusive colors, midnight garnet and Pacific sky.

With the top up, the G convertible looks like it was carved from a solid piece of metal hiding the fact that when the top is down the car takes on another styling personality and revealing its beautiful, equally dramatic interior design and features that match the best of the competition.

The interior design combines sophistication, craftsmanship and thoughtfulness with unique available systems created to enhance your driving pleasure and excitement either with the top open or closed. The driver-oriented cockpit features an Infiniti signature ‘double-wave’ instrument panel design with Infiniti electroluminescent gauges with white-and-violet illumination, integrated multi-function information drive computer display and analog Infiniti clock. The double-hand stitched leather covered, power tilt/telescoping steering wheel is designed for maximum comfort and usability, with standard audio and cruise controls. It feels perfect in your hands. Genuine magnesium paddle shifters are available for the 7-speed automatic transmission with the sport package.

Special Silk Obi aluminum interior trim, inspired by fine Japanese silk and unique to the G convertible Sport and is located across the instrument panel, on the center console and on the door panels. It really gives out a sheen unlike regular aluminum trim.

The regular G convertible gets genuine African Rosewood trim. Leather-appointed seating is standard and comes in Graphic, Wheat or Stone.

Heated 12-way power driver-8-way front passenger seats are standard, with climate controlled seats, heating and cooling functions) are available as part of the Premium Package. The G37 Sport 6MT and G37 Sport Package convertibles come with special sport-styled front seats with manual thigh extension and driver’s power thigh, lumbar control, and torso support-along with sport stitching for the front seats and steering wheel, high-grip aluminum pedals and foot rest and, with the 7-speed automatic, magnesium paddle shifters. These sport seats are fantastic, comfortable and very supportive, all power adjustable. A power walk-in device with position memory provides easy access to the 2nd row seats (the front seats move forward automatically at the touch of a button to allow passengers into the rear seats). An available rear wind deflector helps reduce wind turbulence when the top is down. All switches, dials and buttons are within easy reach and fully illuminated for safe nighttime driving.

The long list of comfort and convenience features includes standard Infiniti Intelligent Key with Push Button Ignition and an Adaptive Dual Zone Climate Control system featuring an advanced AC system that adjusts to provide optimal comfort with the top up or down.

Two audio systems are available, starting with a standard 6-speaker AM-FM-6CD system with MP3 playback capability, Radio Data System, and center console-mounted auxiliary input, 7in. color display and XM satellite radio. A second system is the 13-speaker Infiniti Bose Open-Air Sound system combining a 24-bit 96Hz Burr Brown Digital Analog Converter (DAC) with AudioPilot 2.0 with microphones that automatically optimizes EQ settings for open/closed top positions. The system’s special Bose Front Seat Personal Speakers, mounted in the front seat head restraints, enable superior front audio quality regardless of the top position. An interface system for iPod is also included with this system. Other standard features inside include a self-dimming mirror, power-remote/heated sideview mirrors, electronic cruise-control, variable intermittent wipers/washers, rear window defroster with timer, dual map lamps, dual lighted vanity mirrors, power windows/door locks with all express up/down, front and rear carpeted floor mats. Other options available include a Bluetooth Hands-free Phone system, Infiniti Navigation system with XM NavTraffic with Real-Time Traffic information, Infiniti Voice Recognition for navigation, audio, and climate control functions and a 9.3GB Music Box Hard Drive with Compact Flash slot.

You are living large behind the wheel in the G37 Sport with all the sportiness, comfort, luxury and convenience features right at your fingertips.

What’s underneath the skin, out of sight, is what will guide you on your way, whether moderately or expressing your current desires for excitement and fun.

Like the G Coupe and G Sedan, the new G convertible’s outstanding dynamic performance credentials start with a combination of its advanced FM platform and award-winning V6 engine. Every G convertible comes equipped with a standard 3.7 liter V6 wit VVEL rated at 325hp and 267lb.ft. of toque.

The VVEL system combines hydraulic-controlled variable valve timing and electronically controlled variable valve lift on the intake side, helping to improve not only performance and response but also emissions and fuel efficiency. It also provides cleaner emissions by allowing for quicker warm-up of the catalyst and by stabilizing combustion when the engine is cool.

Wow, this new high-output V6 is high-revving and smooth, just slip the tranny in first and the G convertible takes off like a rocket. You can hit 60mph from a standstill in just 5.7sec.

I enjoyed working the lightweight, smooth-shifting, close-ratio 6-speed manual, but you can option for the electronically controlled 7-speed automatic with manual mode, downshift rev matching, Drive Sport (DS) mode and Adaptive Shift Control (ASC) that allows for quicker shifts in sporty driving situations and available genuine magnesium paddle shifters.

The G convertible’s response handling and exceptional ride performance is provided by its advanced FM (Front Mid-ship) platform design, which optimizes front/rear weight balance and creates a rigid, solid, stable foundation for the 4-wheel independent suspension. For a heavy hardtop convertible, the ride was like riding on rails, that’s how well the ‘racecar’ type suspension and big 19X8 and 19X9in. wheels and tires acted during sharp cornering times.

The front suspension is an independent double-wishbone design, with a single pivot lower wishbone and a long upper link. The multi-link rear suspension separates the Dual Flow Path gas-charged shock absorbers and springs, locating the shock absorber inline with the wheel center. Front and rear setups have stabilizer bars to keep lean out to a very minimum.

I loved the responsive steering provided by a vehicle-speed-sensing rack & pinion system with a sport-tuned steering gear in the G37 Sport MT and Sport Package. Response to my inputs was almost instantaneous, just like when I’m behind the wheel of a sports car or sports sedan. Very quick and very accurate, it shot my confidence way up to take it to its limits of adhesion when cornering.

To keep you on your path safely is Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) with cancel switch, to let you slide out a little, and Traction Control (TC) to help you maintain control on slick or wet pavement.

Braking performance is also outstanding on the G37 Sport 6MT and Sport Package with 4-wheel vented discs with 4-channel, 4-sensor ABS, electronic brake force distribution and brake assist. Up front are 14in. rotors and the rear measure 13.8in. Aluminum four-piston calipers grab the front while aluminum 2-piston calipers grab the rear discs. They are each embossed with Infiniti lettering. My G37 Sport 6MT also came with high-friction brake pads to add further to the overall excellent braking dynamics of the car.

You ride on a choice of two tire/wheel sizes; a Split 5-spoke 18X8in. aluminum alloy wheel with Dunlop SP Sport MAXX A1-A 225/50R18in. front and P245/45R18in. rear all-season tires come standard, while the G37 convertible Sport MT and Sport Package utilizes special 19X8in. cast aluminum-alloy wheels up front with Bridgestone Potenza REO50A high-performance tires, and 19X9in. wheels wrapped with Bridgestone Potenza 245/45R19in. tires in the rear. These magnificent tires really grip the pavement to put the power down and give an impressive smooth ride over poorly paved surfaces.

Also available is Infiniti’s Intelligent Cruise Control with Preview Braking, which assists in maintaining a consistent following distance from the vehicle ahead. It also identifies sudden braking situations with laser sensors to determine distance and related speed of the vehicle ahead in the same lane and ‘pre-pressurizes’ the brake assist system before you even step on the brake pedal.

The all-new G37 convertible is one of the safest with standard advanced airbag system with dual-stage supplemental front airbags with seat belt and occupant classification sensor, door-mounted curtain side-impact airbags for driver/front passenger, front-seat mounted side-impact airbags, and front seat active head restraints. Three-point front seat belts have load-limiters and pretensioners. The rear seat includes fixed head restraints with rear pop-up bars and three-point safety belts. The G37 convertible also features reinforced front side members, front pillars and body sills.

It seems like all of the major automakers are bring to market hardtop convertibles, even on the low end from Pontiac, Mazda and Volkswagen. You have a wide choice in the entry level luxury sport segment and if you are looking to purchase a model from the growing segment, be sure to check out the all-new 2009 G37 from Infiniti. Its one of the best!

The newest 2011 Infiniti QX56 recently made an appearance in the Middle East at an invitation-only event. Someone was able to capture a couple shots of Nissan’s newest mammoth SUV that is a much wanted update to the outgoing Nissan Armada and 2010 Infiniti QX56.

Looking at the grainy spy shots will reveal several Infiniti and Nissan-esq design cues including the strait forward sweeping roof like, reminiscent of the GT-R, Cube and even Kia Soul (really?). The rear tail lamps remind you of the current Infiniti FX crossovers while the front headlights and front grill are pure Infiniti.

“The Four Wheel Luxury Liner”

For the past year total automobile sales have declined more than 40% across the entire spectrum of vehicles. Full-size luxury sport utilities haven’t been immune to this fact and it’s not solely because of their low mpg or high price. Well to do consumers still number in the hundreds of thousands that need power and torque to tow and carry large families, and corporations still need transportation surrounded by luxury for their clients. It’s the downturn in the economy that has well to do consumers and corporations being cautious and careful where the money is spent.

The automakers still must design and manufacture full-size, luxury sport utilities for consumers but have cut production numbers just like they have for full-size and mid-size pickup trucks, full-size and mid-size sedans with the only uptick being compact cars because their prices are usually below $18,000.00 and they average above 30mpg.

The original Infiniti QX56 was introduced in early 2004 and quickly established itself as one of the best all-around full-size, luxury sport utility vehicles. This was well before the economic downturn but there still is a market for these large, luxury people movers.

Following extensive revisions for the 2008 model year, the 2010 QX56 continues to stand apart from the competition with a style all its own. Its inspired performance can be seen in its elegant exterior design, tailored interior and refined appointments-and experienced in the power and strength of its standard 320hp 5.6 liter V8 and responsive 4-wheel independent suspension with an auto-leveling rear design. The QX56 comes standard with rear-wheel-drive or an optional Infiniti All-Mode 4WD system.

The 2010 Infiniti QX56’s refined exterior styling provides a presence befitting its top-luxury status. The front features the distinctive QX56 ‘waterfall’ grille that is surrounded by a full-body type front fascia with jewel-like HID headlights and halogen fog lights. At the rear, a body-color fascia enhances the unique LED taillight design, further providing visual distinction from the competition. A remote-operated power liftgate with opening rear glass is standard. Also standard are the 20X8in. chromed wheels and integrated side body cladding that add a classy and imposing stance. A smooth, one-piece roof rack provides additional cargo hauling ability. Other standard exterior features include dual power-adjustable power-folding, heated sideview mirrors with puddle lamps, integrated turn signals and driver’s-side auto-dimming feature, privacy glass for the 2nd. and 3rd rows, and color-keyed running boards to easy entry and exit. Rear sonar sensors work along with the RearView Monitor system, which utilizes a small camera discretely located in the rear license plate finisher to provide a view (projected on the standard navigation system’s LCD monitor) from the rear of the vehicle of what is behind the QX56 when backing up. QX56 4WD models include skidplates for the oil pan, transfer case and fuel tank, along with a trailer hitch and 7-pin harness plug. The Tow Package is optional on 2WD models. The exterior is unique and contains design cues from all Infiniti luxury models.

I call QX56 a luxury liner because it reminds me of the interior of the finest luxury power boats with its use of authentic materials such as wood veneer, aluminum, stainless steel, Sojourner leather-appointed seating surfaces and thick Tuscano carpeting. The interior boasts class-leading 2nd-row legroom (41.9in.) and a standard power fold-flat 60/40-split 3rd.-row seat.

The long list of interior features include a gated shifter for the standard 5-speed automatic transmission, genuine wood grain interior trim and standard heated, power-tilting, steering wheel, grab handles above each door, dual map lamps, dual, lighted vanity mirrors, floor mats, dual cupholders, and a large storage bin with padded armrest. The instrument cluster is easy to see and understand combining Fine Vision electroluminescent gauges with a signature Infiniti analog clock. More standard features include dual-zone front automatic temperature control, and rear AC with dual controls (front and rear) and rear heater ducts.

The comfortable and supportive front buckets feature 10-way driver’s/8-way front passenger heated power adjustable seats. Your driving position is further optimized through standard power-adjustable brake, and accelerator pedals and a driver’s memory system that includes memory for the pedals, sideview mirrors, driver’s seat and steering wheel. The standard 7-passenger seating configuration includes fold-flat 2nd. row captains chairs with integrated armrests and a removable 2nd. row center console. A fold-flat 2nd. row split bench seat is also available, providing comfortable 8-passenger seating.

The 3rd. row seating area is elevated to provide a commanding forward view and features standard roof-mounted curtain supplemental airbags for side-impact and rollover protection.

Storage space is plentiful in the QX56 with its full-length rear overhead console, a front overhead console with sunglass holder, front center console with large storage capacity and power outlets, side storage bins and a maximum of 12 cup-holders. With the front passenger seat and rear seats folded, it is possible to carry long items such as surfboards with the rear liftgate closed. For easier package handling, the QX56 includes rear area ceiling/floor-mounted cargo tie-down points and an optional cargo net. A chrome roof rack further expands your cargo carrying capacity.

Every 2010 QX57 also offers an Infiniti Intelligent Key system, Bluetooth Hands-Free Phone system, and a 12-speaker Bose Premium Audio system with Burr-Brown DAC and 9.3GB Music Box Hard Drive for digital music storage and playback. The audio system includes dual media capability, AM-FM-CD, steering wheel-mounted controls and compact flash slot for playing MP3 files.

Also standard is an Infiniti Hard Drive Navigation system with 7in. LCD touch screen, Birdview Lane Guidance, 3D building graphics, and XM NavTraffic with real-time traffic information. The system displays current traffic conditions in color-coded images overlaid on the navigation system map. An Infiniti Mobile Entertainment system with a DVD player mounted in the front center console, auxiliary audio/video input jacks, large flip-down ceiling-mounted 8in. monitor, as well as two wireless headphones and remote control is optional.

Quickly and safely moving the new QX57 is a 5.6 liter DOHC V8 engine producing 210hp at 5,200rpm and 393lb.ft. of torque at 3,400rpm. For hauling, towing or serious off-road driving, nearly 90% of the engine’s torque has been available below 2,500rpm.

A smooth and refined 5-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission is reinforced for the high-torque application and features unique gearing and transmission management through a variable lock-up torque converter and electronic controls for improving shift and fuel economy. Although smooth, I would like to see a 6-speed automatic transmission to help break 20mpg on the highway as the QX56 gets only 12mpg/city and 17mpg/highway.

A special tow/haul mode revises shift patterns when engaged and enables the QX56 to maintain a maximum towing capacity of 9,000lbs. for two-wheel drive and 8,900lbs. for four-wheel drive (when properly equipped).

Four-wheel drive models feature a quickly Infiniti all-mode 4WD system with 2WD/Auto/4Hi/4Lo modes and an electronically controlled part-time transfer case with low gear, activated through an easy selection switch knob on the center stack. The system is designed to instantly distribute torque to all four wheels whenever road conditions warrant (up to 50% can go to the front wheels on demand), resulting in optimal traction. I really liked the system easily going from 2WD to 4Hi and back with just a twist of the easy to reach knob.

The QX56 is built on a solid foundation of a fully boxed, high-strength steel F-Alpha frame. Rugged Dana front and rear axles provide the strength to handle on-and off-road challenges, while a comfortable and controlled ride is provided by a 4-wheel independent double-wishbone suspension with front and rear stabilizer bars to keep body lean to a minimum when cornering. The rear suspension also includes an auto-leveling system that seeks to maintain uniform ground clearance and departure angle, even when towing or carrying heavy cargo, by automatically adjusting the air pressure in the system’s air bladders.

The 2010 QX56 also features engine-speed-sensitive power-assisted rack & pinion steering that gives you great feel for the road at speed and makes maneuvering in parking lots easy.

Quickly slowing the QX56 down from speed are large, 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS, EBD, and BA. Up front are 13.6in. vented discs and 12.6in. solid discs in the rear.

For additional stability during severe maneuvers, a Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) with Active Brake Limited-Slip (ABLS) is standard on every QX56.

You ride on standard 20X8in. chrome-finished aluminum alloy wheels that are wrapped with 275/60R20in. Michelin all-season tires for great grip and a smooth ride over all types of road surfaces. A Tire Pressure Monitoring System with four-wheel independent monitoring includes a gauge-cluster mounted warning lamp.

Optional on QX56 is Infiniti’s advanced Intelligent Cruise Control, which, using a combination of laser sensors, throttle and brake actuators and QX56’s braking system, measures the distance to the vehicle ahead via a laser signal and automatically adjusts the QX56’s speed to maintain a pre-selected following distance. (Note-the Intelligent Cruise Control system is not intended for congested areas or city driving and will not brake the vehicle to a full stop.

The QX56’s extensive list of standard safety equipment includes an advanced airbag system with dual-stage supplemental front airbags, with seat belt and occupant classification sensors, roof-mounted curtain side impact supplemental airbags with rollover sensor for outboard occupant head protection for all three rows, front seat-mounted side impact airbags, 3-point seat belts with pretentioners and load limiters, 3-point seat belts for all rear seat occupants, including center position, front seat active head restraints, and LATCH system for child seats. The QX56 also offers Zone Body construction with front and rear crumple zones and steel side-door guard beams.

The QX56 is one of the best looking and best equipped full-size sport utilities on the road and can yours for a base price of $59,150.00 and $62,865.00 full loaded which is a fair price against the competition.

When I first saw the Infiniti Essence Concept in Geneva, I could not help but to think that this was Infiniti’s (Nissan’s) answer to Toyota’s Lexus LF-A. Supposedly the Infiniti Essence has a similar engine to that of the Nissan GT-R but also has an electric motor along side of it making this a Hybrid sports car.

Some automotive experts believe the Infiniti Essence is closer to production than originally thought since the Concept vehicle, demonstrated in the video below, operates on its own power and has several completely functional components. Some car enthusiasts have already compared the styling to a Maserati GT or Fisker Karma and think that this car will never be a production vehicle. Only time will tell and it is ticking away. Case-in-point, today there will be a live unveiling at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance of the new Infiniti M but already the Infiniti Essence has made an appearance at the show being unpacked from a flat-bed truck.

Check back for more images of the Infiniti Essence Concept and new Infiniti M unveiling at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

Not many cars give you a warm and gushy feeling before you even drive it, but somehow the new Infiniti G37 Coupe does the job just fine and reaffirms it with a slight push of the gas pedal. The new 2009 Infiniti G37 Coupe offers a lofty 330-horsepower V6 engine. This is one of Nissans infamous VQ power-house motors that has been perfected many times over. In addition to the refined powerplant, a 7-speed automatic transmission is standard for all G37’s while a 6-speed manual is available on the Sport 6MT version.

Our test Infiniti G37 Coupe Journey was loaded up with several options including the premium package, sport package, navigation package and even illuminated kick plates. Of course with the addition of these wonderful “packages” comes a hefty price for a Japanese luxury sports coupe but manages to stay well below the German competition. Every optional feature sits well with this vehicle. Even the infamous Infiniti dashboard clock is placed in a central location where all occupants can see it.

The outside of the new Infiniti G37 Coupe is a sleek and, can I say, classic looking vehicle. I say classic because it has been over 6 years that the Infiniti G has been on the market and Nissan has managed to avoid straying too far from the original G35 design. When Infiniti was first introduced to the American shoreline it was not an instant hit. It actually took the Infiniti Q45 and the late introduction of the G35, based on Nissan’s FM-platform along with the 350Z, to put them on the same pedestal as the likings of Lexus. After the G35, the rest is history.

From the standard VSC, ABS, TCS, EBD and TPMS to the sport packages’ vicious limited slip differential, solid magnesium shift paddles, 19 inch wheels, 4 piston brake calipers up front and sport tuned suspension, the G37 is a sure footed coupe that could almost be compared to it’s not-so-distant cousin, the Nissan GT-R. Although the G37 coupe is far from a GT-R, there is a hint of the boy-racer attitude when the right-foot is planted to the floor. Speaking of planting the right foot, the exhaust note from the G37 Coupe under heavy throttle can be breathtaking to many but all too common to those who have driven a stock 350Z or new 370Z.

The exterior aesthetics of the G37 coupe are appealing enough to get you a blind date on a Saturday night but don’t expect too many heads to turn when you drive down Rodeo Dr., although the Athens Blue color of our test vehicle received several positive comments during several trips to the gas station. Did I say “several trips to the gas station?” Yes, do not expect to get any decent gas mileage figures when driving the G37 Coupe in the city. The VQ series V6 delivers plenty of punch but at a cost of an 18mpg rating in the city and 26 on the highway. Our real-world test on the highway with 2 adults averaged 24.5mpg while driving a steady 79 mph. Our test in the city, well, we managed only 17.5mpg but that included a lot of stop-and-go traffic during the peak of rush-hour.

Don’t worry, while at the gas station you can actually check your own oil now. Before, the G35 made it almost impossible to check the oil with the lousy dipstick location and design. The G37 fixes this issue.

Inside the G37 Coupe you will find very well laid out controls with clear and concise markings. The user friendliness of the navigation system is on par of a Mac running Windows. You have over-lapping controls in some aspects due to the touch screen, scroll wheel, steering wheel mounted controls and the center dial buttons. If you are ever familiar with only one way of controlling your navigation system, Bluetooth integration, stereo or HVAC controls, then the G37 Coupe should meet your requirements.

The easy to read cluster with electroluminescent background lighting is always a joy to gaze at especially when observing how fast you can bury the red needles. After all, this is supposed to be a luxury sports coupe and not a grocery getter right? The proof is in the lack of trunk space and cramped, but usable, back seats. The G37 Coupe makes up for this with plenty of legroom up front and the perforated heated leather seats with adjustable bolsters and lumbar. The aluminum trim and accents add a soft sporty appeal to the interior. Everything is in its place. The new G37 Coupe’s interior is proof that Nissan has improved over the years and swayed away from using too many cheap plastics as to devalue the vehicle no matter how good it drove.

Overall, the G37 Coupe is an excellent alternative the benchmark setting BMW 335i Coupe. The base price of the G37 Coupe starts at $35,900 with the BMW 335i Coupe starting at $42,200. I know what you are saying, the BMW 328i Coupe is only $36,500. Come on folks, the G37 Coupe is packing 330hp and the BMW 328i Coupe has 230hp. That’s a whopping 100 ponies you’re missing. You can’t bring a knife to gun fight and expect to come out on top even if the knife has 50,000 miles of free maintenance. I know it is not all about performance especially when everyone is trying to be more economical these days and the BMW 3 series has been a car and driver’s “10 best” for almost two decades. I am still partial to BMW’s because I own one but I can honestly say, the G37 Coupe is a worthy contender in the luxury sports coupe market. You get a decent amount of “stuff” in several aspects with the new 2009 Infiniti G37 Coupe. Now all I need to do is test drive the 2010 G37 Convertible and I will tell you if I would choose the BMW 335i Convertible over it.
