She helped put together the 50th Anniversary Barbie New Beetle and is now in charge of reintroducing Fiat to the United States as they make a return after 25 years to the land of the free. Fiat’s return to North America is something several critics question? Do they think that they can do well in the car market that is already pretty saturated? Even though American car companies seem to be dying out, Fiat somehow thinks that they can do well here. I am sure they are not going to be as cheap as our local cars. They don’t seem to have better sales figures in Europe as compared to Toyota and Honda. I guess time will tell how they do in North America.

Soaves’ will have an official title as Head of the Fiat Brand for North America. That puts her in a very “high” position as she will answer directly to Servio Marchionne. Full Press Release below.

Press Release:

Chrysler Group Names Laura Soave to Lead Fiat Brand for North America

The all-new 2010 Mercury Milan hybrid builds on a strong foundation since it is the sibling of the Ford Fusion hybrid, voted ‘2010 Car of the Year’ from Motor Trend Magazine, with the same quality and reliability, but adding sophisticated exterior and interior design cues. For those consumers looking for a stylish hybrid, the Milan now offers them the most fuel-efficient hybrid sedan in its class.

Chief designer Darrell Behmer and his team had the advantage of working from a vehicle that’s been lauded by consumers and consumer groups. “Our approach was to build upon the Milan’s strengths-to improve rather than reinvent,” Behmer said. “From a design standpoint, we wanted to clarify the design, making it cleaner and more modern.”

The changes to the exterior design were focused on the grille, hood, and front and rear fascias. The chin was pulled forward and the fascia was pulled down to give the new Milan hybrid a wider, sportier look. Those changes as well as substantial underbody work made for a cleaner, more aerodynamic sedan. Exterior highlights include the brushed aluminum vertical grille bars, lower air intake with a lower brushed aluminum horizontal bar, cat’s-eye headlamps, lower projector beam foglamps, steeply swept back windshield pillars, aerodynamic power-remote side mirrors, flared fenders with lighted side marker on the front fenders, deeper lower rocker panels, LED wraparound rear lamps, a spoiler attached to the top of the trunk lid with a brushed aluminum horizontal bar at the lower end of the trunk lid, and a blacked out center below the bumper with two side-by-side polished stainless steel exhaust tips.

Inside, the design team created a more contemporary, technical look with metallic new finishes on the instrument panel that carry through on the center console, door trim and steering wheel. The all-new instrument panel is finished with a soft upper and lower skin and has much less hard plastic than Japanese competitors. A redesigned tilt/telescoping, leather wrapped steering wheel with form fitting palm swells, a new leather/chrome shifter, and wrapped and padded armrests have been added, increasing Milan’s sportiness and comfort at all key driver touch points. The seats received a makeover as well. The seat contour has been revised, with more side support and overall a more comfortable seat with smoother bolsters and more-textural inserts. The seats also feature contrasting stitching and leather inserts to give the Milan even more attitude, befitting this mid-size sedan.

The new gauge cluster has been designed with day time backlighting, a black lens, and 3-D elements to create a high tech jewel-like appearance, similar to a find watch. Drivers will be greeted by a new ‘welcome’ sequence that makes the Milan seem as if its coming to life with you turn the ignition on. Gauges needles sweep back and forth as the lighting and new chimes come on. The ambient lighting system offers the option of illuminating the front and rear footwells and front cupholders. The two-tone look on the inside continues as a Milan signature, with satin-aluminum accents around the center stack and door pulls plus you’ll also appreciate the dual map lamps, dual lighted vanity mirrors, power windows/door locks and grab handles above each door that further gives the new Milan hybrid a more European flair. You also get 2-12-volt power plugs and a 110-volt power outlet.

The Ford hybrid team has developed a powertrain system that combines the best attributes of the gasoline engine and electric battery-driven motors to deliver the optimal experience for the smart consumer in terms of driving performance and fuel economy, and besting the Toyota Camry hybrid by at least 6mpg in the city.

The overall system upgrade allows the Mercury Milan and Ford Fusion hybrids to operate at higher speeds in electric mode. Both hybrid vehicles can operate up to 47mph in pure electric mode, as long as you are not driving up hill or under hard throttle, which is approximately twice as fast as some other competitors. Plus, city driving range on a single tank of gas is expected to be more than 700 miles. I was amazed at how fast on level travel the Milan was able to go. I just kept pressing and releasing the gas pedal to keep the mpg gauge at 50.

This next-generation hybrid system features a new 2.5 liter c-cylinder engine (155hp/136lbft. of torque) running the proven Atkinson cycle mated to a smooth and quiet running electronically-controlled continuously variable transmission (e-CVT). It is one of the best I have ever tested; you never feel or hear the transmission in action’ an intake variable cam timing (iVCT), which allows the vehicle to more seamlessly transition from gas to electric mode and vice-versa. The spark and cam timing are varied according to the engine load to optimize efficiency and emissions. An enhanced electronic throttle control reduces airflow on shutdowns, reducing fueling needs on restarts. A wide-band lambda sensor analyzes the air-fuel ratio and adjusts the lean/rich mixture accordingly to keep the system in balance and to minimize emissions. A new smaller, lighter nickel-metal hydride battery has been optimized to produce 20% more power. Improved chemistry allows the battery to be run at a higher temperature and it is cooled using cabin air. An added variable voltage converter boosts the voltage to the traction battery to operate the motor and generator more efficiently. A new high-efficiency converter provides 14% increased output to accommodate a wider array of vehicle features. A smarter dual-zone climate control system monitors cabin temperature and only runs the gas engine as needed to heat the cabin; it also includes an electric air conditioning compressor to further minimize engine use and maximize comfort. The regenerative brake system captures the energy normally lost through friction in braking and stores it. Nearly 94% energy recovery is achieved by first delivering full regenerative braking followed by friction brakes during city driving. A simulator brake actuation system dictates brake actuation and delivers improved brake pedal feel compared to the previous generation braking system. It feels more linear with less noise.

The Milan hybrid also offers drivers a way to be more connected to the hybrid driving experience thanks to Ford’s innovative SmartGauge with EcoGuide, a unique instrument cluster execution that helps coach drivers on how to optimize performance of their hybrid.

SmartGauge with EcoGuide features two, high-resolution, full-color liquid crystal display (LCD) screens on either side of the analog speedometer that can be configured to show different levels of information, including fuel and battery power levels, average and instant mpg. Growing leaves and vines track and reward the driver’s efficiency, the more leaves and vines, the higher your last trip’s mpg. EcoGuide uses a multi-layered approach to coach the driver to maximum fuel efficiency. A tutorial mode built into the display that helps the driver learn about the instrument cluster and the hybrid in a whimsical way that does not overpower. For instance, drivers can choose one of four data screens to choose the information level displayed during their drives. They are: Inform-fuel level and battery charge status; Enlighten-adds electric vehicle mode indicator and tachometer; Engage-adds engine output power and battery output power; Empower-adds power to wheels, engine pull-up threshold and accessory power consumption. All levels can show instant fuel economy, fuel economy history, odometer, engine coolant temperature, what gear the car is in and trip data (trip fuel economy, time-elapsed fuel economy and miles to empty) The engine coolant temperature indicator turns green when engine conditions are warm enough to allow engine pull-down. The Milan hybrid is differentiated from its gasoline powered siblings with unique hybrid ‘road and leaf’ badging on both sides and the rear of the vehicle, unique 17X7in. eight-spoke aluminum alloy wheels, eco-friendly seat fabric made from post-industrial 100% recycled materials and a standard 110-volt power outlet. The innovative Easy Fuel Capless fuel filler system is standard on all Milan models and helps to reduce evaporative emissions that create smog and global warming. When fueling is completed, and the fuel pump nozzle is removed, the system automatically seals shut.

Engineers also looked at how to make the Milan hybrid more responsive and they made improvements in steering and handling, the turning circle was shortened by one foot and the brake feel was improved.

The fully independent suspension system is precise and unique front short/long arms (SLA), gas-charged shocks and stabilizer bar with a rear setup featuring multi-links, gas-charged shocks, coil springs, twist blade lower control arms and stabilizer bar. The handling of the new Milan hybrid is as good as any other front-wheel-drive hybrid on the market.

The 2010 Milan team also took a look at how to improve the comfort inside the car, making improvements to interior quietness. Hood insulators, inner and outer dash absorbers, new carpet, revised ceiling baffles, additional sound deadening in the trunk, new interior material and new headliner material are among the improvement made. Once inside and at speed with all of the windows closed, there is no detectable sound from the outside, especially with the new front end, aerodynamic side mirrors and rear spoilers to help with front lift noise, wind noise and rear downforce. Additionally to combat wind noise, improved body and door sealing improved Milan’s already best-in-class standing in wind noise. It gives Milan drivers the level of quiet luxury they demand.

New technology features this year include Blind Sport Information System (BLISTM) with Cross Traffic Alert, an upgraded SYNC system that features 911 Assist and Vehicle Health Report, Voice-Activated Navigation, Sony AM-FM-CD player Surround Sound audio system with 12-speakers, SIRIUS Travel Link and a Reverse Camera System with side sensors.

I tested the new Milan Hybrid Premier edition and it came with the following standard equipment not mentioned above: leather seating with 8-way power driver seat and 4-way power front passenger seat, halogen autolamp headlamps, ambient lighting, auto-dimming rearview mirror, remote keyless entry, traction control, power moonroof, heated front seats, floor mats, pull-down rear armrest with dual cupholders, front dual cupholders on the center console with a padded armrest and storage, storage slots in each door, and variable intermittent wipers/washers.

Standard safety features include AdvanceTrac with electronic stability control, dual front airbags and side airbags up front, side curtain airbags for all outboard seats, 3-point seat belts with front load limiters/pretensioners, perimeter anti-theft system, S.O.S. post crash alert, tire pressure monitoring system, front/rear crush zones and steel beams in each door.

With a starting price of just $27,500.00 the new 2010 Mercury Milan hybrid is one of the best looking, comfortable and performing hybrids on the market for consumers looking for a 600 mile plus tourer. My loaded Premier Edition Milan hybrid was priced at $34,230.00 including vehicle prep and delivery. If you do most of your driving around where you live this is the optimum fuel-saving vehicle as it can travel in electric mode up to 47mph on level roads, amazing!

With a long, sleek and wide stance body style, a 355hp EcoBoost V6 engine, an electronic six-speed with SelectShift automatic with paddle shift activation, an all-wheel-drive system, a sport-tuned fully independent suspension riding on 20X9in. polished aluminum wheels, plus a fully trimmed leather, wood and chrome luxury interior with seating for up to seven passengers and a cargo capacity behind the front seats of 75.9cu.ft., the all-new Lincoln MKT is indeed ‘supersonic luxury transportation.

The all-new 2010 Lincoln MKT enters the luxury crossover segment with Lincoln’s signature design, roomy and sumptuous interior, and intuitive technologies that will make luxury customers’ lives easier-including adaptive HID headlamps, available adaptive cruise control, collision warning with brake support, active park assist and blind spot information system (BLIS) with cross traffic alert. Lincoln is offering full-size luxury crossover customers a fresh new choice with the 2010 Lincoln MKT-a three-row crossover that delivers the optimal blend of distinctive design, power, performance, interior spaciousness, fuel economy and high-technology.

Standard on every MKT is the brand’s signature design-complete with a split-wing grille, a beveled chamfer along the MKT’s shoulder line, a flowing cantrail that frames the greenhouse and full-width horizontal taillamps that span the subtly curved weight-saving magnesium liftgate that adds visual character while protecting generous rear cargo space. Down below are polished stainless steel dual exhaust tips to give a hint of the power residing under the hood.

You get two choices of powerful, fuel-efficient V6 engines. A 3.7 liter, 24-valve is standard and generates 268hp at 6,500rpm and 267lb.ft. of torque at 4,250rpm. This engine has been tuned to provide brisk acceleration and smooth power delivery. A two-speed fuel pump and Aggressive Deceleration Fuel Shut-Off combined with optimized transmission and final-drive gearing allow this engine to deliver fuel economy of 17mpg/city and 23mpg/highway with front-wheel-drive.

For even more performance-driving feel, Lincoln MKT also offers a twin-turbocharged 3.5 liter, 24-valve EcoBoost engine. This engine provides the power of a normally aspirated V8 with V6 fuel economy. The EcoBoost V6 delivers a class-leading 355hp at 5,700rpm while generating 350lb.ft. of torque from 1,500 through 5,250rpm with fuel economy of 16mpg/city and 22mpg/highway. EcoBoost is a global Ford strategy to deliver the power that customers want, combined with the fuel economy that they need. Combining gasoline direct injection with twin turbochargers and a smaller-displacement engine, EcoBoost can match the power output of larger, naturally aspirated engines while yielding torque and fuel economy gains. Pressurized direct injection enables a higher compression ratio, while twin turbochargers work in tandem to reduce lag associated with earlier turbocharged engines. Even with additional horsepower, fuel economy is optimized by an increased compression ratio-enabled by charge cooling air-and sophisticated knock controls.

Both V6 engines come with six-speed automatic transmissions but the EcoBoost engine is equipped with a six-speed SelectShift automatic. This advanced gearbox offers the driver a choice between fully automatic operation and manual control. In addition, paddle shifters are integrated into the steering wheel spokes. Intuitive to operate, a squeeze back on either paddle will deliver upshift, while a gentle push forward on either paddle will induce a ‘matched-rev’ downshift. This capability makes the MKT driving experience sporty, yet smooth. Unlike other competitive transmissions, SelectShift won’t ‘second guess’ the drive with an override shift. With SelectShift, manual control is truly manual controlled.

All-wheel drive is optional on the 3.7 liter V6 equipped MKT. The AWD option enhances the MKT’s capability in a variety of weather conditions and adds traction and enhances stability on dry pavement. The sophisticated AWD system is fully automatic, using an advanced array of internal electro-mechanical clutches to efficiently distribute toque between front and rear wheels as needed. AWD is standard in the MKT with EcoBoost.

The all-new MKT strikes an optimum balance between capable and driver-engaging handling while simultaneously delivering a smooth, quiet ride in al three rows. It combines luxury touring experience with an agile ride and available 4,500lb. Class III towing strength. Part of the reason for the quick, precise handling is the standard strut tower brace up front that gives fast and precise turn-in when cornering.

Key elements of the MKT fully independent suspension development and tuning included front end lift on acceleration, offering stable and engaging steering and handling characteristics that provide confidence to all drivers, all while delivering a luxurious ride quality consistent with Lincoln’s brand character.

A new rear suspension system features a ‘one for one’ shock absorber ratio. The resulting linear response gave the engineering team a stable baseline for suspension tuning, allowing the team to deliver a better balance between responsive handling and control as well as a smooth ride. It also improves rear suspension isolation and enables the use of 20in. wheels.

Those 20in. wheels house big brakes that quickly and safely slow the MKT EcoBoost down from speed. Up front are 12.6in. vented discs clamped with dual, aluminum calipers, while 12.2in. vented discs in the rear are clamped with single, aluminum calipers. Adding control while braking hard is standard ABS, Traction Control and AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control.

Lincoln MKT delivers a new level of quiet confidence that delivers best-in-class NVH control. Virtual modeling and wind tunnel test helped engineers optimize the vehicle, influencing everything from side-view mirror placement and special sound deadening in the bulkhead to extensive exhaust system isolation and the inclusion of both an acoustic windshield and dual-layer front side glass to specially reduce A-pillar wind noise. It is very quiet inside the MKT when driving at speed.

Lincoln MKT delivers abundant technologies aimed at making life luxurious for both the driver and three rows of passengers. A holistic approach was used to develop these amenities, where ease of use and intuitive operation were key objectives. Nowhere is this focus more apparent that Active Park Assist. MKT with EcoBoost features advanced Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS), which enables the optional Active Park Assist. This innovative technology employs an ultrasonic-based sensing system, as opposed to video camera-reliant competitive offerings, making hands-free parallel parking a breeze.

Active Park Assist activates at the touch of a button just above the shift gate, reducing the risk of selecting an inappropriately sized parking space, detects the edges of adjacent objects to calculate optimized trajectory and steers the MKT while coaching you through conventional throttle and braking inputs. It also works in uphill parking situations, unlike competitive systems on the market.

Additional MKT customer convenience features include adaptive cruise control, intelligent access with push button start/stop, securicode keyless entry keypad, adaptive HID headlamps, auto high beams coupled with adaptive headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, easy fuel Capless fuel-filler system, MyKey, blind spot information system (BLIS) with cross traffic alert, reverse camera system, and Lincoln SYNC.

The available Navigation Package includes an internal hard-drive for map and point-of-interest information storage. THX Certified 5.1 surround audio system with 14-stragegically aimed premium speakers. A unique new technology, making its debut in the MKT audio upgrade is neural surround significantly improving the surround sound experience from compressed digital music formats. In addition, a SIRIUS Travel Link is included with the Navigation Package providing coast-to-coast weather data, forecasts, fuel prices, sports scores, movie listing and more.

The interior is one of the most luxurious and functional on the market. All four doors open wide for easy entry and access plus there are grab handles above all passenger doors. The rear magnesium liftgate is power opening and closing for ease of operation.

This year’s Geneva Motor Show is packed full of personalized rocket ships for the road including a new one from Koenigsegg, the Koenigsegg Agera. You didn’t think Koenigsegg would stop pushing the envelope of performance with the CCX did you?

The Koenigsegg Agera, on display at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, brings a supercar that can easily be found as a very large object in the mirror of a Bugatti Veyron. The Agera packs a serious punch from the same 4.7-liter V8 found in the CCX with increased power output to 910hp and 811 lbs.-ft. of torque. The Agera tips the scale at only 2,832 pounds and is able to go from 0 to 62mph in 3.1 seconds topping out at 242mph.

Other notable things about the Agera is that it produces 661 pounds of down force at just 155 mph, has a bespoke sequential transmission, carbon ceramic brakes, can pull a 1.6 lateral-G under cornering and the exhaust is made out of Inconel, a super-light-weight alloy that is difficult to shape but can withstand very high temperatures.

According to some rumors, Koenigsegg plans on producing between 16 to 20 units each year. No pricing information is available yet.

Enjoy the images, press release and exclusive video of the Koenigsegg Agera below!

Press Release

Koenigsegg celebrate 15 years of making dream cars, by unleashing their latest jewel – the Koenigsegg Agera. A new supercar aimed to take the Koenigsegg experience to the next level, both on the road and the track.

Agera, the Swedish verb “to act”, has been chosen as the name for Koenigsegg´s latest super creation, as it symbolizes the Koenigsegg philosophy well. Koenigsegg is always striving forward, seeking challenges beyond limitations. The new supercar Koenigsegg Agera is an outcome of that creative process and its functions respond very well to the given name.

When we believe in something, we do it. We act. the car also has to act, when commanded to unleash its performance, forcefully and fawlessly. The development of the Koenigsegg Agera has been evolutionary, following the Koenigsegg tradition of continuous improvements, by honing and perfecting the end result, all based on previous experience and innovative mindsets. The focus when developing the Koenigsegg Agera was to maximize, driving experience, cornering speed, braking and adaptability, says Christian von Koenigsegg.

A testament to time

The Koenigsegg Agera is a testament to time. The original shape and concept of the Koenigsegg CC, created 15 years ago, is still valid, fresh and highly competitive today. The Koenigsegg Agera still stay true to the original philosophy, shape and size of the original CC. At the same time, it looks, feels and performs like something belonging to the future, with all new content.

A Supercar is not better than the tires it use, as it is the only link between the road and the car. Therefore Koenigsegg has a deep and long term collaboration with Michelin, when it comes to tire development. The Koenigsegg Agera program will take this collaboration to the next level and is expected to set new standards when it comes to overall performance -wet as well as dry handling.

The Koenigsegg Agera is as wide at the front as in the rear of the car. This gives very good balance in corners and minimizes body roll.

The Koenigsegg Agera also features the latest in braking technology, incorporating an adjustable ABS system, 392×36 and 380×34 ventilated and drilled ceramic discs, for unparalleled braking performance and zero fade regardless of track or road condition. Thanks to optimized breathing and Twin Turbo, power is now 910 hp, running on regular petrol. Torque is maximum 1100 nm and is reached at 5100 rpm. There is over 1000 nm of torque available from 2680 to 6100 rpm.

The new traction control is the fastest reacting in the industry, with auto adapt functionality for different road conditions and driving styles as well as several manual settings.

Koenigsegg has also developed a new type of interior illumination, which is a worlds frst in the car industry – Ghost light. The illumination shines through the billet aluminium buttons and surfaces by way of invisible nanotubes, creating excellent visibility of the symbols, as well as a very clean and stylish appearance, framed by an all-new carbon fbre centre console and tunnel assembly.

Furthermore, the driver can easily select the information he wants displayed in front of him, on the all new multi-info cluster combined with the upgraded infotainment display, ranging from basic functionality, to G force meter, power meters, Sat-nav, music, lap-timer or compasses – to best suit the current driving conditions, be it highway cruising, touring country roads, city navigation or serious track driving. Furthermore the interior features the new Koenigsegg Agera stitching and seams, which gives an beutiful fuidity to the interior.

All in all the Koenigsegg Agera is created to maintain Koenigsegg’s position as one of the most engaging and top performing cars on the road, on the track -on the planet. Still, maintaining the largest luggage space in the industry and the novel Koenigsegg doors and detachable/stow able hardtop, that really makes all Koenigsegg cars stand out.

The Koenigsegg Agera will be produced in parallel to the Award winning CCX and CCXR models. This gives Koenigsegg the ability to live up to our customers varying wishes and demands. The Agera is on display at the 80th Salon International de l’Auto in Geneva. The pre-production show car will be put through its phases for the coming six month prior to the production car launch of the Agera. Finally, Agera is also short for the Greek word Ageratos, which in ancient Greek means “ageless”.

One common formula that most automotive enthusiasts look for in a performance car is light weight and lots of power. Combine the two and the rest should all fall into place in making the ultimate sports or super car. That is pretty much the same formula Lamborghini used with creating the new 2011 Gallardo 570-4 Superleggera. Weighing in at 3,153 lbs. (2,954 lbs dry weight) and powered by a 530 horsepower 5.2-liter V10 delivered through all 4-wheels, the Superleggera means business.

The innovation and advanced technology put into the new Gallardo Superleggera does not stop with its engine. Light-weight carbon fiber bits, 19-inch forged aluminum wheels and an advanced all-wheel-drive system make it possible for the Superleggera to jump from 0 to 62mph in 3.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 202 mph.

Press Release

Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera

Even more dynamic, lighter, more powerful and stunning – the Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera is the new top model in the Gallardo line- up. Its evocative “superlight” badge refers to a driving machine of true sporting character and describes a high-performance and lean automotive athlete. The Superleggera makes its entrance to continue the success of its predecessor, launched in 2007, of which Lamborghini produced and sold no less than 618 in just one year.

Compared with the already lean Gallardo LP 560-4, the weight of the Gallardo Superleggera has been trimmed by 70 kilograms (154 lb). The super sportscar from Sant’Agata Bolognese boasts a dry weight of no more than 1340 kilograms (2954 lb) – the lightest road-going model in Lamborghini’s range, and a new arrival in one of the most exclusive market niche segments.

One key factor is the exterior and interior components made from carbon- fiber. Carbon-fiber is ideal for the manufacture of sportscars as its use allows for weight reduction and improved mechanical features. The car’s performance is thus enhanced thanks to a better weight-to-power ratio and reduced total mass, which means that CO2 emissions are also lower. Lamborghini has been at the forefront in this material’s application for many years, and now the brand is extending its leadership even further.

The V10 power unit with 5.2 liters (317,6 cu in) of displacement generates 419 kW (570 CV*) in the Gallardo Superleggera. This puts the weight-to- power ratio of the new top model at only 2.35 kilograms (5.18 lb) per CV and guarantees breathtaking performance. The Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera handles the dash from zero to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 3.4 seconds and flies past the 200 km/h (124 mph) mark only 10.2 seconds later, ultimately reaching 325 km/h (202 mph). The engine with “Iniezione Diretta Stratificata” gasoline direct injection also boasts an impressive degree of efficiency. Its fuel consumption and CO2 emissions have been reduced by 20,5 percent compared to the previous model.

The Gallardo Superleggera is an uncompromising driving machine. Its running gear, with its mighty braking system, has a dedicated and exceptionally precise set-up, while its 19-inch wheels, Pirelli P Zero Corsa, clad in Pirelli sports rubber, are extremely light. The Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera brings a whole new meaning to the term “super sportscar”.

Design and aerodynamics The beauty of power

The elegance of every Lamborghini rests on both its extreme power and precise functionality. The Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera’s bodyshell is sculptured and completely free from stylistic additions. Dimensions define the contours of a dynamic wedge – 4.39 meters (172,7 in) long, 1.90 meters (74,8 in) wide, but only 1.17 meters (45,9 in) high.

Exterior modifications are all directed at increasing aerodynamic effects. Working closely with wind tunnel experts, the designers from Lamborghini’s Centro Stile remodeled the front bumper – three-dimensional, deeply recessed elements form trapezoidal frames for the large air intakes. Together with the V-shaped, sharply defined nose and the LED daytime running lights, the black elements give the front end a razor-sharp look, reminiscent of Lamborghini’s top model. The new design increases the supply of cooling air and improves the downforce on the front axle.

The modifications to the fully-covered underbody, which include new sill elements and a redesigned diffuser incorporating four large tailpipes, help to achieve better aerodynamic results. The Gallardo Superleggera sports a small rear spoiler as standard. A big rear spoiler is available as an option.

The bodyshell Intelligent lightweight engineering

The model on which the Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera is based, the Gallardo LP 560-4, is already a prime example of Lamborghini’s lightweight engineering philosophy, with its dry weight of 1410 kilograms (3108.5 lb). Its bodyshell is made from aluminum, with moulded node elements and extruded parts forming an extremely stiff framework into which the aluminum panels are integrated. The spaceframe structure is impact-resistant and forms the basis for the super sportscar’s precise handling.

Against this background, the task of reducing the weight by a further 70 kilograms (154 lb) presented a huge challenge to Lamborghini engineers – the target figure, a weight-to-power ratio of 2.35 kilograms (5.18 lb) per CV, sets a new best among the competition. Lamborghini engineers handled the task as they usually do – with hi-tech competence and aesthetic flair.

The rear windshield and side windows are made from robust and resistant polycarbonate. The engine cover also includes a polycarbonate window, beneath which the V10 engine is displayed like a technical work of art. The long cover section runs from the roof to the rear of the vehicle and is made from carbon-fiber. Engineers also selected carbon-fiber for the rear spoiler, sills, diffuser, parts of the underbody paneling and the fine exterior mirror casings.

With its minimal weight and extremely high rigidity, carbon-fiber is the ideal material for a super sportscar. As far back as the 1980s, Lamborghini was already gathering experience in this field with the Countach. Today, some parts of the Murciélago’s structure are made from carbon-fiber. In order to secure this leading position even further, the brand from Sant’Agata Bolognese established a center of excellence for carbon-fiber materials, where specialists are developing components, working with efficient manufacturing technologies.

Lamborghini’s carbon-fiber strategy is further proven by its foundation of the “Automobili Lamborghini Advanced Composite Structures Laboratory” (ACSL) at the University of Washington in Seattle, USA. Lamborghini provides support to the facility and its long-term, co-operative research work in the fields of aeronautics and astronautics, together with the composite materials’ application within the automotive sector. Alongside the University of Washington, aircraft company Boeing is also among Lamborghini’s partners.

The aircraft manufacturer commands enormous expertise in the field of composite materials. With the new Type 787 Dreamliner, Boeing has developed the world’s first commercial aircraft built entirely from carbon- fibre. Thanks to its superior characteristics, it consumes around 20 percent less fuel than a conventional aeroplane.

The interior and the use of carbon-fiber

Altogether, carbon-fiber components make up 40 (88 lb) of the 70 kilograms (154 lb) saved on the Gallardo Superleggera. In the interior, too, engineers aimed to reduce weight as much as possible. The center tunnel cover, the door panels and the surround of the e-gear automated manual transmission lever are made from carbon-fiber. The high-end material is also used for the sports seats’ shells. They make a significant contribution to the overall weight reduction.

Just like the rest of the cockpit, the sports seats are clad in lightweight Alcantara instead of leather. At Lamborghini, weight reduction is in no way synonymous with sacrifice – the Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera is still equipped with air conditioning and electric powered windows as standard.

Lamborghini has built on this strength – the interior is crafted with passionate attention to the tiniest detail; high quality materials indulge both visually and sensually.

The interior, including roof and mats, retains the Lamborghini Gallardo’s black finish. As a contrasting color for elements such as seat trims and stitching, customers can choose among green, yellow, orange and two shades of gray. They match exterior paint finishes in Verde Ithaca, Giallo Midas, Arancio Borealis, Grigio Telesto, Nero Noctis and Bianco Monocerus.
The engine 10.2 seconds from zero to 200 km/h

In the Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera, LP stands for “longitudinale posteriore” and refers to the orientation of the V10 engine – which is mounted longitudinally behind the driver, just like every Lamborghini engine. The number 570 refers to the maximum power output in CV, which equates to 419 kW and is available at 8,000 rpm. Equally impressive is the pulling power – the torque curve peaks at 540 Nm (398,3 ft lbs) at 6,500 rpm. The increase of 7 kW (10 CV) is the result of the new dedicated engine management strategy.

The V10 has a displacement of 5204 cm3 and achieves a specific output of 80.5 kW (109.6 CV) per liter. Special features on this long-stroke engine with an aluminum crankcase include dry sump lubrication and a cylinder
angle of 90 degrees. Both solutions lower the center of gravity, thus improving the handling dynamics. To ensure an ideal combustion chamber fill, the engine has an adjustable intake manifold and continuous control of the chain-driven camshafts.

The crankshaft is conceived as a dual-plane crank – the connecting rods of opposing pistons share one bearing. This configuration delivers alternating ignition intervals of 54 and 90 degrees; a unique sequence that is the reason for the compelling, racing car-like sound of the V10. As the revs rise, resounding bass notes are overlaid with razor sharp harmonics.

The powerful V10, combined with the model’s weight reduction, gives the Gallardo Superleggera LP 570-4 breathtaking performance. The car accelerates zero to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 3,4 seconds, 0 to 200 km/h (0-124 mph) in 10,2 seconds – then continues relentlessly to its top speed of 325 km/h (202 mph).

The Gallardo Superleggera is also considerably more efficient – compared with its predecessor, its fuel consumption in the EU driving cycle is reduced by 3,5 liters per 100 kilometer (0,9 gal), or 20,5 percent, to 13,5 liters/100 km (16 mpg). This improvement is partly due to the “Iniezione Diretta Stratificata” gasoline direct injection, which injects fuel into the combustion chambers at pressures of up to 100 bar. The tumbling mix cools the combustion chambers, which enables a very high compression ratio of 12.5:1 which, in turn, increases efficiency.

Power transmission Traction without compromise

The Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera comes with the e-gear transmission operated via steering wheel paddles, as standard. The automated system with electronic management shifts through its six gears extremely smoothly and far more quickly than could be achieved by human reflexes.

The e-gear control unit has three operating modes, two of which available in automatic. The “Thrust mode” delivers maximum off-the-line performance and is programmed to manage starting revs of around 5000 rpm with minimal wheel slip.

Every single kilometer in the new Superleggera is utterly thrilling – not least because of the relentless traction in practically every situation. This is largely attributable to the four driven wheels, as indicated by the number 4 in the model name.
The permanent all-wheel drive integrates a central viscous coupling and a 45 percent limited slip differential on the rear axle. In normal circumstances, the power delivered by the V10 is channeled with a ratio of 30:70 to the front and rear axles. The weight distribution of the superlight Gallardo is 43/57 percent front/rear.

In 1993, the Diablo VT was the first Italian super sportscar with an all-wheel drive set-up, and Lamborghini has been steadily consolidating its leadership ever since. In fact, thanks to the car’s superior traction, Lamborghini drivers can accelerate earlier out of a bend than drivers of rear-wheel drive cars.

The running gear Even firmer, even more precise

The new Gallardo Superleggera is a highly-concentrated driving machine – it thrills with breathtaking cornering speeds and fast, immediate feedback. Its handling is always precise, stable and predictable.

The running gear layout is derived directly from Lamborghini’s motorsport experience. The suspension is aluminum double wishbones. The precise rack and pinion steering keeps the driver very closely connected with the road. The shock absorbers are extremely firm, and the anti-roll bars and suspension mounts have been further reinforced: these features enable the running gear to reach its full dynamic potential. No other model in the Gallardo range is as close to a race car as this one. The development of the Superleggera was heavily influenced by experiences gained from the world’s fastest single-brand race series, the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo.

Another special feature of the Gallardo Superleggera is the wheels. The 19- inch units are aluminum forged and are therefore extremely lightweight – saving 13 kilograms (28.6 lb). The wheel bolts are made from titanium and are also incredibly light and rigid. The tires are 235/35 ZR19 at the front and 295/30 ZR19 at the rear and come from the Pirelli P Zero Corsa series. Developed specifically for the new top model in the Gallardo range, they are closely related to pure race rubber.

Behind the huge wheels are brakes that serve to deliver uncompromising stopping power and are managed by the standard-fit ESP stability control system. The front wheels are served by aluminum eight-piston calipers, with four-piston units at the rear. The ventilated brake discs have a diameter of 365 and 356 millimeters (ø 14.37 x 1.34 in and 14.02 x 1.26 in) respectively. As an optional extra, Lamborghini can fit extremely fade- resistant and lightweight discs made from carbon-fiber ceramic with six pistons at the front. The front ceramic discs have a diameter of 380 millimeters (ø 15 x 1.5 in).

Equipment Hi-tech for road and track

Alongside its specialized carbon-fiber lightweight components, the Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera is delivered ex-works with an array of other high-end features. Highlights include the e-gear transmission – a manual gearbox is also available at no additional cost – the dedicated set-up, the Pirelli sports tires and the sports seats. Alcantara upholstery and a hand-stitched steering wheel also set the interior ambiance.

The range of special equipment is particularly sporty. It includes carbon- fiber ceramic brake discs, four-point seat belts, fire extinguisher and a steel roll cage. Visual impact can be further increased by a rear spoiler and the engine bay for the engine compartment – both from carbon-fiber – as well as colored brake calipers.

For the interior, Lamborghini offers special floor mats and leather steering wheels, a storage package and an alarm system. An additional carbon-fiber package includes center console and instrument panel trim, the parking brake handle, parts of the steering wheel and the door handles. A LED light package illuminates the engine compartment, the interior, and the entry area.

Additional features of special equipment increase comfort, such as the multimedia navigation system, the lifting system which raises the front of the car to enable driving over obstacles, a remote control for opening garage doors and a rear view camera mounted beneath the rear spoiler. Customers who want to personalize their Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera, can use Lamborghini’s wide-ranging options of the “Ad Personam” individualization program.
