I’ll go ahead and answer that question for you: yes, you really do want to win yourself a new Mustang GT. If you live in the 48 Continental United States, are over 18 and don’t work for one of Ford’s agencies or suppliers, you can register to win a 2012 Mustang GT at Mustang 5.0 Fever, or by entering at select NHRA events throughout the year. One winner will be chosen on December 9, and that lucky person grabs a 2012 Mustang GT plus $5,000 worth of go-fast parts from Ford Racing. You can go ahead and put your name in the hat, but I’ve already got you beat and I’ll be building my parts list from the Ford Racing catalog soon.

I’ve always liked Mustangs, but never enough to actually buy one. They were always cars that I wanted a neighbor or brother-in-law to own; that way, I’d get to borrow the keys on occasion without committing to a purchase. Pre-2011 Mustangs sounded cool and were reasonable fun in a straight line, but no Mustang GT would have been my first choice for a track day car. The 2011 Mustang GT changed all that, and it really is a case of the whole being better than the sum of the parts. The 5.0 liter Coyote V8 pulls like a freight train when you put your foot in it, yet it’s surprisingly docile around town. The car sticks to the road like Charlie Sheen to a crack pipe, and feels a whole lot lighter and better balanced than you expect it to. In fact, I’d take a base Mustang GT over the Shelby GT500 for track day use, since the GT is a better balanced (but admittedly slower) car. In my opinion, it’s the best performance bargain on the market today, which is why I’ll be so stoked when Ford calls me on December 9.

‘CALIFORNIA DREAMING IN THE NEW MUSTANG GT’

Ford is finally getting serious with the new Mustang GT. Gone is the two-valve 4.6 liter V8 that pumped out 325hp and in is place is the more powerful and state-of-the-art 5.0 liter thirty-two-valve V8 that generates a whopping 412hp and 390lb.ft. of torque. Who says the horsepower wars are dead. With this high-tech engine and the standard six-speed manual or automatic transmission you get a ‘segment best’ 26mpg on the highway while rocketing out to 60mph in less than five-seconds.

Ford also just released the new GT with the California Special Edition Package that I had the privilege of test driving and photographing.

This unique appearance package gives the new GT more aggressive looks and a more unique and comfortable interior. It consists of a front fascia highlighted with a horizontal slat grille with Pony emblem on the side, a deeper lower air-intake with integral round projector beam foglamps and splitter, a black GT/CS side tape graphic on the doors that gives the car the appearance of movement when parked, side scoops, a pedestal rear spoiler, a unique ‘California Special’ silver rear badge, a diffuser fitted between the dual exhaust tips to better manage the air, and custom 19X8.5 inch machined face, argent painted aluminum wheels with ‘GT’ chiseled on one spoke, and wrapped with Pirelli 245/45ZR19 inch P Zero Nero ultra-high-performance tires.

On the inside are carbon fiber weave ribbed leather bucket seat inserts with GT/CS embossing on the seatbacks, dark carbon fiber weaved leather door inserts, dark carbon fiber weave covering the aluminum plates on the dashboard and around the instrument cluster with a stenciled GT/CS graphic on the right side of the dashboard, and custom GT/CS embroidered floor mats. The price for this exciting and unique package is just $1,995.00 and well worth it for all that you get to make your new 2011 Mustang GT even more aggressive looking, more aerodynamic and more comfortable behind the wheel.

But that is only part of the story-the new 2011 Ford Mustang GT is a fantastic piece of engineering that brings the GT up to ‘world-class’ power and performance while competing against the new Chevy Camaro SS and BMW M3 coupes.

The modern 5.0 liter, four-valve Twin-Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) V8 engine delivers 412hp at 6,500rpm and 390lb.ft. of torque at 4,250rpm. As a result of the new higher power and torque specs, the new GT has a speedometer now reads 160mph, and the tachometer has a higher 8,000rpm redline.

The all-new aluminum four-valve-per-cylinder heads feature a compact roller-finger follower valvetrain layout leaving more room for high-flow ports for free-breathing performance. Head structure is designed to support higher cylinder head pressures and cross-flow cooling for sustained high-rpm use. Head bolt size is increased from 11 to 12 millimeters to contain the higher combustion pressures. The aluminum block was developed for optimized windage and oil drainback under lateral conditions and high-rpm use, such as a track-day outing for an enthusiast owner.

Increased main bearing bulkhead widths and nodular iron cross-bolted main bearing caps with upsized bolts were also employed to accommodate the significant performance increase. An additional element is the increased capacity and baffling of the deep-sump stamped steel oil pan to enable sustained high-rpm use and offer the convenience of 10,000 mile oil change intervals. Piston-cooling jets also were incorporated for performance-minded drivers and for faster warm-up on cold starts.

Specially designed tubular exhaust headers were developed to maximize exhaust pulse separation and improve flow. Engineers also made sure all of their hard work wasn’t disguised under the hood. Curved intake runners are framed by an acoustic cover sporting the new 5.0 logo, while ‘Powered by Ford’ cam covers crown the tops of the cylinder banks. This effect is perfectly suited for a purpose-build performance machine like the new 5.0 liter V8 engine. It is a real gem, high-revving and smooth as you quickly reach the 8,000rpm redline.

Making the drive even more exciting and fun is the new 6-speed manual transmission with a ‘short-throw’ linkage that gives back a more direct feel of the shifter along with relaxed cruising with the extra top gear. Enthusiasts who choose the 6-speed automatic will be pleasantly surprised to find the advanced 6-speed transmission delivering crisp, quick shifts but I would like Ford to include paddle shifters so you can more easily manual shift up or down with the automatic for more exciting driving experience.

The automatic transmission also features a grade-assist or ‘hill mode’ to improve drive-ability on hilly terrain. This technical innovation uses vehicle input-acceleration pedal position, vehicle speed and brake status-to automatically determine the correct gear ratio while on an incline or decline. Hill mode eliminates sixth gear, extends lower gear operation on uphill climbs and provides additional grade or engine braking for coast-downs.

The standard 3.31 manual, and 3.15 automatic rear axle ratios provide an ideal blend of cruising fuel economy and quick acceleration, aided by the wide ratio spread permitted through the use of six forward speeds in the gearboxes. A standard limited-slip axle helps to distribute the new engine’s power between both rear wheels for maximum traction in all conditions. My test GT model came with the 3.73 rear axle ratio for even quicker acceleration from a standstill that really got my heart pumping faster during launches when I could find the right road to experience the rocket-sled and seatback pinned blast.

The new Electric Power Assist (EPAS) rack & pinion steering system has made a dramatic contribution to the GT’s driving dynamics by delivering quicker on-center steering response, also made possible by the big, strut tower brace over the engine, increased effort at highway speeds and reduced effort required in low-speed parking maneuvers.

Because the belt-driven power steering pump is eliminated, EPAS provides a quieter ride with fewer components drawing engine power. EPAS also enables new technologies that adjust for minor driving annoyances such as ‘Drift-Pull’ compensation that adjust the steering to correct for crosswinds and minor road crowning, while ‘Active Nibble’ control helps eliminate the ‘shimmy’ felt as high speeds when a wheel is out of balance or a brake rotor is warped. Both conditions are alleviated by EPAS independent of driver input, helping ensure Mustang GT delivers a smooth, comfortable driving experience.

The front and rear suspension setups have also been reworked and improved to give you sharper turn-in and a more comfortable ride over poorly paved roads. The enhanced rear lower control arms add stiffness, improve powertrain NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) and sharpen handling. a stiffened rear stabilizer bar also gives better on-center steering. Stabilizer bar diameters, spring rates and gas-charged shock absorbers all have been re-tuned for improved dynamics. Compared to last year’s Mustang GT, you can feel the difference as soon as you steer into a corner at high speed. When you turn the steering wheel it feels like you hit a wall as you easily turn through the curve and exit at higher speeds. The new GT feels more nimble and neutral as you maneuver around slow city traffic, driving on the straight-aways at high speeds and when tackling curving back roads.

The refined front independent suspension setup features reverse-L MacPherson struts, and a larger 34.6mm tubular stabilizer bar. The refined rear 3-link solid axle features coil springs, a Panhard rod and a 24mm solid stabilizer bar. The Mustang GT stays ‘old school’ with the rear suspension geometry but it is continuously refined to handle the more powerful engine. The only ‘blip’ from the rear is when I rode of two different types of road surfaces-pavement and blacktop-did the rear feel a little skittish.

Standard AdvanceTrac Electronic Stability Control, which complements the all-speed traction control and standard ABS helps keep the car under control in all driving conditions, but you can, of course, shut the system down to more easily slide the rear out when entering a steep curve.

Quickly slowing the new GT down from speed are new, power-assisted, 4-wheel disc brakes with standard ABS. The front vented discs are larger 13.2in. rotors clamped with twin-piston 43mm floating aluminum calipers, and 11.8in. vented rotors clamped with single-piston floating iron calipers.

Like the exterior design and improved powertrain, suspension, steering and brakes, the interior design features world-class design and execution. The one-piece instrument panel design is crafted in seamless soft-touch TPO (Thermoplastic Olefin) skin fully encompassing the genuine aluminum-finish panels. Mustang’s chrome-ringed gauges and dual-vane air register vents are precisely crafted and positioned. The instrument panel and console flow as one shape, another strong connection to Mustang heritage.

The sport bucket seats are comfortable and hold you firmly in place with deeply cut side bolsters. The sporty, leather-wrapped/tilting, 3-spoke steering wheel feels perfect in your hands. The leather-wrapped shifter is positioned perfectly for easy reach and use. The center console features dual cupholders and a deep storage bin. There are storage slots in each door bottom to quickly reach need items. All dials, switches and levers are easy to use and within easy reach, plus all are illuminated for safe nighttime travel. The aluminum with rubber insert foot pedals add to the sportiness of the GT and feel great under your feet. The Mustang GT with the California Special Package also gets dual map lamps, variable-intermittent windshield wipers and washers, optional HID headlamps, easy fuel Capless filler, power express windows, power door locks, electronic climate control, remote keyless entry, power 6-way driver’s seat/2-way front passenger seat, thick cut-pile carpeting, signature CS/GT floor mats, split-folding rear seatback, electronic cruise-control, dual vanity mirrors, ambient lighting, Shaker 500 audio system with AM-FM-SIRIUS satellite radio, single CD Player and MP3 connection. The interior is quieter thanks to additional sound-deadening materials on both sides of the instrument panel, and a rear wheel arch liner to reduce noise on gravel or wet surfaces.

Improvements in body stiffness contribute to enhanced driving performance and have a parallel benefit in accident protection. A stiff vehicle structure like that found in the Mustang helps protect the cabin from deformation and intrusion in an impact. Mustang also uses high-strength steel in its body structure and ultra-high-strength steel in the door intrusion beams for additional side-impact protection. The front structure’s crush zones are computer-designed to absorb energy in a controlled manner and help dissipate it before it can reach the passenger compartment. Additional safety equipment includes the Personal Safety System, which features dual-stage driver and passenger airbags, side-impact, seat-mounted airbags, 3-point seatbelts with pretensioners and load limiters.

The optional Ford SYNC voice-activated communications and entertainment system now includes applications such as Traffic, Directions & Information, 911 Assist and Vehicle Health Report.

The new 2011 Mustang GT with the California Special Edition Package makes driving one of the world’s fastest sporty coupes even more fun, exciting and enjoyable than the standard factory GT model with more aggressive looks, better aerodynamics for enhanced stability, and a more comfortable ride when you are just cruising or when you are challenging steeply curving roads.

“Oh Yeah!” That’s all I need to say after driving the new 2011 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 for the first time. The iconic pony car, that just about everyone in his or her sane mind recognizes on the road, is better and more powerful than ever for 2011.

Ford did their homework in providing consumers with an uncompromised performance bang for your buck. The war has begun between other cars in the Mustang’s segment sparking conversations, and arguments, among car enthusiasts from all around the world.

The 2011 Ford Mustang GT in our garage reminds you of how enthusiasts saw the pony car back in the 1960’s with the rear spoiler delete ‘clean-look’. The 2011 Mustang GT’s optional big beefy Brembo brakes and 19-inch wheels wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero rubber screams performance and answers back with a 412hp and 390 ft-lbs of torque 5.0-liter V8. That’s right, the 5.0-liter is back with a vengeance after a 10-year hiatus.

To send all of those raging 412 horses to the solid rear axle is a well-designed 6-speed short shifting manual transmission. The gates were close together with just enough notchyness to perform some nifty shifting when you want to push the Mustang to its limit. A 6-speed automatic is optional but who wants an automatic when you can enjoy the pony car the way it was meant to be?

Put your foot through the floor and the 2011 Mustang GT will outperform a new Chevy Camaro SS and Dodge Challenger SRT-8 with a bright smile on your face. Aside from just performance, the Mustang GT has a lot more to offer such as decent gas mileage for a big 5-liter V8 at 17mpg city and 26hwy. These figures are almost unheard of in such a monstrous V8-powered vehicle.

Now back to the performance stuff that I was discussing earlier. The 2011 Mustang GT in our garage also had a 3.73 rear end that laid the power to the ground propelling our GT to 60mph from a standstill in 4.5 seconds. The big 14-inch Brembo brakes up front provided enough clamping power to match the stopping distance of performance cars twice the cost of the Mustang GT. Speaking of costs, Ford has managed to please the consumer with a starting price of $29,646 for the GT while the V6 Mustang with 305hp starts at a low $22,995 with better class-leading gas mileage figures reaching 31mpg.

The interior of the 2011 Mustang GT may be an area where Ford was able shave off some coins from the price. Although the interior is very functional, it still comes off as mediocre. Nevertheless the interior works well and you seem to forget about any downfalls that it has every time you apply your right foot to the right pedal. That just puts a big smile on my face and I seem to even forget that the Mustang even has a stereo, which by the way, is rather disappointing. That can easily be fixed with the upgraded optional entertainment system by way of Ford’s ‘talked-about’ Sync. I was simply able to solve the weak stereo dilemma by rolling down the windows and listing to the growl of the 5.0-liter V8. Oh boy, what a nice sound system the 5.0 is!

A few other things were lacking when it comes to the interior of our test vehicle. A leather wrapped steering wheel with audio controls would have been nice but that’s something we can easily live without especially with a few extra bucks in your pocket considering a price of $32,980 for our test car. The cloth seats are well supported and comfy even if the re-tuned suspension is a bit stiff at times.

Outside of the 2011 Mustang GT you will find designs similar to the 60’s Mustangs. There is no way to mistake the new Mustang for anything else. Ford has done a great job modernizing the Mustang with the typical techy gadgets for safety such as traction control and stability control. The taillights even have a modern touch to them with sequential turn-signal LED taillights. Several years ago this was only thought of as an aftermarket modification. Now you get it from the factory. Blind-spot mirrors in the side-view mirror is a nice added touch to the new Mustang helping you see any cars or objects next to you. Someone at Ford is listening to their customers. The front fascia is a carryover from the 2010 model year with integrated classic-looking fog lights in the front grill and the lidded headlights look.

The big 19-inch wheels and Pirelli P-Zero tires are an excellent choice for the GT which signifies to others that this car has something serious under the hood. As if you did not know that there was a big 5.0 liter lurking under the aluminum hood. It says so on the side of the Mustang GT in shinny numbers with a red decimal. Sometimes this is the only dead-giveaway that this Mustang GT has 412hp and not last year’s 318hp. Big difference!

Having driven the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro (upcoming review) and Dodge Challenger SRT-8 6-speed, I can honestly say that the Mustang GT 5.0 has a slight edge over the competition in the performance department. Even though when pushing the 2011 Mustang GT into the turns, it does not give you a since of security having some initial body roll. However coming out of the turn reassures you of its true capabilities.

The 5.0 comes stock with an impressive package under the hood but if you are looking to change up the exterior why not add a set of Mustang side scoops.

The spring rate is a good compromise for cornering and for those long stretches on the highway.

As far as value goes, the 2011 Ford Mustang GT is probably the most bang you could get for its price point. Be that it may, other modern American muscle cars can be tuned for relatively low prices to beat the snot out of the 2011 Mustang GT but the Ford Mustang is one of the most modified and aftermarket-sought-after cars around. Not to mention, the 540hp GT500 is a tuners dream car with a warranty. With that being said, Ford has done a remarkable job with the new Mustang GT 5.0 especially in the area of performance. Now if only they would send us a rag-top version so we can pop in our Vanilla Ice CD and feel right at home signing “Rollin, in my 5.0 with my rag-top down so my hair can blow”.

Okay, I know we are jumping on the automotive website “common things to do” bandwagon here by comparing the new Ford Mustang against the Chevrolet Camaro SS. No doubt that the 2011 Ford Mustang 5.0 will be a serious ass-kicker, but what about this year’s Mustang against this year’s Camaro? The guys at Everyday Driver are doing some good things and we wanted to commend them by posting a comparison video of the ’10 Mustang GT vs. the ’10 Camaro SS.

Below is a full side-by-side comparison video of the American muscle cars of today from Ford and Chevrolet. Enjoy!

“Rollin’, in my 5.0 with my rag-top down so my hair can blow” Yes, that was one of many favorite songs in the 1990’s. For those who just adored the Ford Mustang 5.0, they were even more thrilled to have the honorable mention in Queen’s “Under Pressure” oops, I mean Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice baby”. Now the Ford Mustang 5.0 is officially back and all it needs is a new catchy song made by someone who samples someone else’s music without permission.

Enough about Vanilla Ice, lets heat things up with a couple new videos of Ford’s new monstrous Mustang GT 5.0-liter V8 that lays down 412 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque.

The 5.0 puts down some serious power but why not stretch that powerband a little bit further with one of the aftermarket Mustang tuners that are on the market

As shown in the videos, it’s one of Ford’s latest creations, the 5.0. With over 100 more horses under the hood than the Mustang V6, the new 2011 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 is able to get 25mpg on the highway. That’s just 5mpg shy of the 305hp V6. This is only more proof that Ford is not messing around when it comes to pleasing the American Muscle-Car-Gear-Head and Pres. Obama at the same time.

DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 28, 2009 – The 5.0 is back! The 2011 Ford Mustang GT arrives with an all-new advanced 5.0-liter V-8 engine, developed by a passionate cadre of enthusiastic engineers who rallied around the common goal of delivering more than 400 horsepower.

The modern 5.0-liter four-valve Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) V-8 engine in the new Mustang GT will deliver 412 horsepower and 390 ft.-lb. of torque. At the same time, fuel economy is projected to be better than the previous model and unsurpassed in the segment.

“This all-new 5.0-liter engine is the next chapter in the development of the world-class Mustang powertrain portfolio,” said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development. “It’s a thoroughly modern engine for the times, delivering the performance and fun-to-drive factor that enthusiasts want, while improving fuel economy.”

Coyote in the lobby
Many of the engineers on the development team have worked in the Engine and Electrical Engineering Building on the Dearborn, Mich., product development center campus. For years they walked past the original 5.0-liter V-8 Coyote Indy racing engine on display in the lobby, continually inspired by its mix of heritage, high technology and horsepower.

The powertrain development community had long wanted to develop a new 5.0-liter powertrain, with strategic discussions beginning in 2000. By 2007, the Mustang competitive landscape was beginning to change, a sign that the time was right for advancing the Mustang GT powertrain to world-class levels.

The team began 5.0-liter engine development with the objective of delivering 400-plus horsepower, on a timetable accelerated by 12 months without compromises in reliability, durability, fuel economy, or noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) control.

“Nearly all of the team members have worked on other high-profile powertrain programs,” said V-8 Engine Programs Manager Mike Harrison. “They all had a clear vision of the work required on their particular component or subsystem. Their passion for engines, racing and delivering every last ounce of performance throughout the engine speed range really demonstrated that they put their heads and their hearts into this powertrain.”

Development test engines and benchmarks included 5.0-liter blocks, employing different bore and stroke measurements, GT500 four-valve-per-cylinder heads and cams, various intake manifold runner configurations, differing compression ratios and a deep-sump oil pan. The team also evaluated Ford Racing’s 5.0-liter “Cammer” V-8 crate engine for transferable best practices.

Extensive computer-aided engineering (CAE) modeling, development engine experimentation and evaluation in combination with intricate machine work brought this promising, all-new configuration to jaw-dropping life in an accelerated time frame.

The result of this development is an “and” solution, not an “or.” 2011 Mustang buyers will enjoy the benefits of a powerful engine as well as responsible fuel economy.

Ti-VCT
A critical element in the 5.0-liter V-8′s ability to deliver 412 horsepower, with improved drivability, tractability and fuel economy over the 2010 Mustang GT powertrain, is enhanced Ti-VCT.

For a high-performance application, the team specified cam-torque-actuated variable camshaft timing. Using existing cam torque energy, with assistance from pressurized oil, meant that minimal upgrades to the oil pump were required, resulting in less parasitic drag. Increased volumetric and thermal efficiency gives faster Ti-VCT response at all engine speeds.

During the development phase, camshaft lift profile and port optimization started with higher-lift Ford Racing aftermarket units, modified for compatibility with various four-valve-per-cylinder heads. Extensive CAE and dynamometer testing was performed to fine-tune camshaft events and port flow for performance and fuel efficiency in conjunction with the variable camshaft timing.

The resulting all-new aluminum four-valve-per-cylinder heads feature a compact roller finger follower valvetrain layout leaving more room for high-flow ports for free-breathing performance. Head structure was designed to support higher cylinder head pressures and cross-flow cooling for sustained high-rpm use. Head bolt size was increased from 11 to 12 millimeters to contain the higher combustion pressures.

The aluminum block was developed for optimized windage and oil drainback under lateral conditions and high rpm, such as a track-day outing for an enthusiastic owner and driver. Increased main bearing bulkhead widths and nodular iron cross-bolted main bearing caps with upsized bolts were also employed to accommodate the significant performance increase.

An additional element is the increased capacity and baffling of the deep-sump stamped steel oil pan to enable sustained high-rpm use and offer the convenience of 10,000-mile oil change intervals. Piston-cooling jets also were incorporated for performance-minded customers and for faster oil warm-up on cold start.

Specially designed tubular exhaust headers were developed to maximize exhaust pulse separation and improve flow. A team analyst actually fabricated the tubular headers in his home workshop, bringing the CAE design to life.

Performance and fuel economy
The 412 horsepower and 390 ft.-lb. of torque delivered by the 2011 Mustang GT 5.0-liter V-8 represent significant increases versus the 2010 model year output levels.

The six-speed automatic transmission on the 2011 Mustang GT will deliver up to an estimated 25 mpg highway and 17 in the city. This is up from 23 mpg highway and 17 city for the 2010 model. Six-speed manual transmission Mustang GT models for 2011 are projected to deliver 24 mpg highway and 16 city, matching the 2010 model but delivering significantly more horsepower and performance feel.

2011 Mustang GT fuel economy is enabled by the Ti-VCT, the six-speed transmissions in automatic or manual variations, EPAS and an additional rear decklid seal to enhance aerodynamics.

Fuel economy also is aided by engineering a lightweight powertrain. The engine, as shipped, weighs just 430 pounds. This represents a weight savings of more than 20 percent versus the previous 5.0-liter offering. Lower mass can be attributed to the aluminum block and heads, the lightweight composite intake manifold, composite cam covers and hollow camshafts.

Improved driving dynamics

EPAS has made a dramatic contribution to Mustang GT driving dynamics, delivering quicker on-center steering response, increased effort at highway speeds and reduced effort required in low-speed parking maneuvers. EPAS allows specific tuning for the Mustang GT application.

The 2011 Mustang GT features an enhanced rear lower control arm to add stiffness, improve powertrain NVH control and sharpen handling. A stiffened rear stabilizer bar for better on-center steering is also included. Stabilizer bar diameters, spring rates and dampers all have been tuned for improved dynamics.

A Brembo brake package upgrade will be available for serious enthusiasts. This package includes 14-inch vented front discs from the GT500 Mustang, unique 19-inch alloy wheels and summer performance tires.

Added convenience content
For 2011, Mustang GT offers drivers several new convenience technologies, including:

Standard message center

Integrated blind spot mirrors

MyKey™ programmable vehicle key

Illuminated visors

Universal garage door opener

Sun visor storage

New look
From the 5.0 fender badges to the new engine cover, Mustang GT honors and continues the proud heritage of its predecessors. The speedometer increases to 160 mph and the tachometer redline advances from 6,500 to 7,000 rpm.

Three vibrant new colors will be added for 2011 including Yellow Blaze Tri-Coat, Race Red and Ingot Silver.

Muscle goes modern for 2010 as the Ford Mustang -America’s favorite muscle car for 45 years straight-hits the streets with an all new exterior design, new world-class interior featuring well-crafted materials and update technology, and a V8 engine with even more power and an even throatier signature Mustang exhaust sound.

Combine these elements with the new Mustang’s improved handling characteristics, more standard safety and technology features, it’s already-strong safety and quality performance and reputation, and it’s easy to see how the muscle car known around the world delivers on the promise of fast, fun and affordable performance for a whole new era.

In true Mustang tradition, there is a steed for every need. At launch, customers can choose from a V6 or V8 with their choice of coupe, convertible or innovative glass roof, plus several options and features delivering the opportunity for customers to personalize their cleaner, meaner-looking Mustangs, the most customized car on the planet. I was fortunate to be testing the new convertible version of the GT.

“The best Mustangs have always been the ones that connect young America with the spirit of the times-and the 2010 does exactly that,” said J. Mays, Ford VP of Design. The new Mustang is close to the magnetic center of the original, fully loaded with swagger you’d expect, but with modern refinement and attention to detail like you’ve never seen in a muscle car.”

The new, bolder looks start with the more aggressive grille, punctuated with the first new Mustang emblem since the car’s introduction in 1964. Both the V6 and V8 GT have brand new sculpted front-end designs unique to each model. The headlamps, turn indicators, now integrated into one unit, are modern interpretations inspired by the 1970 Mustang. On the V6, the fog lamps are located on the lower fascia, while on the GT, the fog lamps are again located in the upper grille-but are smaller than the outgoing model, similar to the original lamps of the 1967-68 models that inspired them.

The exterior sheet metal is all-new for 2010. At the front, the new headlamps, lower fascias, fenders and grille are capped by a powerdome hood that adds to the muscular appearance while functionality allowing for enhanced air cooling of the engine. A full perimeter chrome strip is fitted to the bottom of the lower air intake. Mustang’s washer-fluid nozzles are tucked into the cowl, while the antenna has been moved to the rear, both of which create a cleaner appearance while also reducing wind noise at speed.

Front and rear fenders feature taut, sculpted wheel flares, like a tight skin stretched over the wheels. A classic spear character line on the doors leads to a modern indication of ‘hip’ rear fenders. “It helps give the car an aggressive, forward direction, like it’s ready to jump,” said Doug Gaffka, Mustang chief designer. The lower side extensions are also redesigned to give the Mustang GT a more aggressive, lower stance.

The new rear end design features aggressively angled rear corners, a sculpted decklid and prominent rear badge. A notable new tail lamp design features three LED bulbs firing sequentially from the inside for turn indication. The sequential bulbs were a distinct Mustang feature in the 1960’s and comeback to the 2010 model for the first time since then. Locating the reverse lamps vertically creates a modern version of the Ford classic three-lens taillamp. A full-perimeter rear spoiler mounted on the rear of the decklid keeps the rear pinned to the pavement at high speeds. Down below are wider dual exhaust tips finished in polished stainless steel.

The new looks are a definite progression from all previous models that helps keep the Mustang GT relevant in today’s sporty coupe market segment.

Cleverly combining modern technology with Mustang heritage is a signature of the 2010 model, in terms of both design and engineering. The new GT combines elements of last year’s Bullitt model noting engine and chassis improvements. Ford engineers also applied some improvements gained from Mustang professional racing. The wheel and tire combinations are 1in. bigger with standard 18in. wheels/tires, up to 19in. as an option. Engineers also adjusted the springs, stabilizer bars and shocks to better balance the ride, steering and handling for all models. This new GT feels more controlled for steering and handling, quickly reacting to your inputs, yet it retains a good ride balance.

A Ford Racing cold air intake adds 15 more horsepower to the 4.6 liter, 3-valve, all-aluminum engine first introduced in the Bullitt. A very rigid strut tower brace is also fitted making front end handling even more precise. It also helps reduce ‘cowl shake’ when driving the convertible GT over poorly paved roads. The engine runs on regular gas but if you put in premium it has adaptive calibration that gives even better mid-range torque. The new ‘Easy Fuel’ innovative capless fuel system makes it quicker and easier to refill the tank. It’s an upgrade to the most-robust, most-accessorized engine in the marketplace today, no one has the reliability, no one has the upgraded options. The 4.6 liter V8 is a fantastic engine, proven on the race track, the drag strip and on the highway.

This potent V8 is mated to a proven, close-ratio, Tremec 3650 5-speed manual or an optional Tremec T-5 automatic transmission turning the rear wheels.

Power-assisted rack & pinion steering helps you cut through slow city traffic and when slicing through steep curves on the back roads. It is nicely weighed, and gives very quick feedback to you inputs.

Slowing the Mustang GT convertible down from speed are 4-wheel disc brakes, 12.4in. vented discs up front clamped with dual-piston aluminum calipers, and 11.8in. vented discs in the rear clamped with single-piston floating iron calipers.

Keeping you on your chosen path is Ford’s AdvanceTrac Electronic Stability Control, now standard, and compliments Mustang’s all-speed traction control and ABS brakes, all working together to keep you on track. It gives you more confidence in any driving condition while improving ride quality and maintaining its world-class steering and handling capability. You can shut the stability control system and AdvanceTrac system off to let the rear slide out when dicing through mountain canyon roads.

The all-new 2010 GT convertible is the best Mustang model that I have ever tested on the road. I felt more attached to the car by its ability to fulfill all of my inputs whether in acceleration, handling or braking.

Like the exterior, the interior design is all new with world-class materials and workmanship. The powerful new one-piece instrument panel design is crafted in seamless soft-touch TPO (thermoplastic Olefin) skin fully encompassing the genuine aluminum-finish dashboard panels. The chrome-ringed, white-faced instrument cluster is easier to see than before and with the dual-vane air register vents which are precisely crafted and positioned, gives the interior a more up-scale look and feel. I really liked the new, sporty, aluminum/matching leather wrapped steering wheel. It feels perfect in your hands and contains buttons for the cruise control and audio functions. Aluminum-faced foot pedals only add to the sporty interior look.

The instrument panel and console flow as one shape, another strong connection to Mustang heritage. The sport bucket seats and arm rests have softer materials with high-quality stitching. My test model came with optional heated/brick red natural grain leather trimmed seats and door trim, further giving the new Mustang GT an upscale look. The stick shifter is perfectly placed for easy use and now features a billet aluminum ball on top of the leather boot which now sits in a chrome ringed rectangular shape.

The new center stack design adds the latest version of Ford SYNC, with new features like 911 Assist, and vehicle health report. The electronic finish panel contains the easy-to-use audio and climate control buttons and knobs, and are fully integrated into the finish panel.

Owners can also customize their ambient and instrument lighting through the My Color system, which features 125 color options.

In addition to the improvements in technology and comfort, drivers will notice a quieter ride but the signature Mustang sound remains audible. The upgraded instrument panel along with new sound deadeners added to select areas help improve interior quietness, even in the convertible GT model, especially at high speeds or on rough roads. All the better to hear that famous Mustang roar.

The soft-top convertible opens and closes quickly with a push of a button mounted between the dual map lamps. You have just two latches to detach or attach and it takes only 25sec. The top comes with 3-layers of fabric to help keep out the rain and cold temperatures. The rear glass comes with a defogger for better rearview visibility.

Standard equipment not mentioned above includes auto headlamps, variable, intermittent wipers, power windows/door locks with express up/down, A/C, 4-way power driver’s seat, Shaker 500 audio system with in-dash 6-CD player/AM-FM-Sirius Satellite Radio, cruise control, power remote side mirrors, self-dimming rearview mirror, and floor mats.

Standard safety features include front and side airbags, 3-point safety belts with front load limiters/pretensioners, LATCH child seat fasteners, tire pressure monitoring system, SOS post crash alert system, steel beams in each door and front/rear crush zones.

Options not mentioned above include Ford’s navigation system, rearview camera system, a Shaker 1000 audio system and a rear boot to cover the top when down.

The Mustang convertible top actually has some aftermarket upgrades available such as a 3D Carbon one piece cover.

With a completely redone ‘drop-dead gorgeous exterior that echoes the classic Mustang designs of the past, an interior featuring world-class materials, numerous technology upgrades, more power and an improved driving experience, the 2010 Mustang GT convertible is the perfect tanning machine and is poised to become the latest classic in the proud line of Ford’s iconic American muscle car.

Ahhh, it’s a wonderful day when Ford delivers an all-new Mustang GT.
This year the iconic Pony Car is even better than the last generation, which was a vast improvement from generations past.

This all-new 2010 Mustang GT is more contemporarily styled, more powerful, with better handling, and a completely redesigned high-quality interior that can stand up against any sporty coupe on the market for a base price of just $27,995.00. This new Mustang is the industry’s first sporty coupe to have an available ‘glass roof’ that runs from the top of the windshield to the front of the rear glass.

It is indeed a wonderful day as Mustang muscle goes modern for 2010-America’s favorite muscle car for 45 years straight-hits the streets with a new sculpted exterior design, a new interior design featuring world-class craftsmanship and materials, new technology, and performance improvements such as larger wheels, forced air induction, and a retuned suspension taken from the Mustang Bullitt.

This car is so much fun to drive, even in traffic with all eyes centered on the taut lines and new Yellow Jacket custom paint. Out on the open road the retuned suspension holds fast and straight, just like a race car. And just like a race car is cuts through the corners with the greatest of ease. The retuned front and rear setups, power assisted rack & pinion steering system and 19X9.5in. Pirelli P-Zero Nero tires give you tremendous grip and contact to push on the throttle on exit and lay out the rear with control.

In true Mustang tradition, there is a ‘steed for every need’. Customers can choose from a V-6 or V-8 with their choice of coupe, convertible or the innovative glass roof, plus several new options and features delivering the opportunity for customers to personalize their cleaner, meaner-looking Mustang.

It all starts with the more aggressive grille, punctuated with the first new Mustang emblem since the car’s introduction in 1964. Both V-6 and GT have brand-new sculpted front-end designs unique to each. The headlamps and turn indicators, now integrated into one unit, are modern interpretations inspired by the 1970 Mustang. On the V-6, the fog lamps are located on the lower fascia, while on the GT, the fog lamps are again located in the upper grille-but are smaller than before, similar to the original lamps of the 1967-68 models. The new look is truly unique and symbolic of Mustang’s heritage and the iconic status it has in the world and as a symbol of Americana.

The exterior sheet metal, except for the fast-back roofline, is all new for 2010. At the front, the new headlamps, lower fascias, fenders and grill are capped by a new powerdome hood that adds to the muscular appearance while functionally allowing for enhanced air cooling of the engine. Mustang’s washer-fluid nozzles are tucked into the cowl, while the antenna has been moved to the rear, both of which create a cleaner look while reducing wind noise.

The front and rear fenders feature taut, sculpted wheel flares, like a tight skin stretched over the wheels. A classic spear character line on the doors leads to a modern indication of ‘hip’ rear fenders. It helps give the car an aggressive, forward direction, like it’s ready to jump forward.

The rear end design features aggressively angled rear corners, a sculpted decklid with a full perimeter integrated spoiler, wide polished stainless steel exhaust tips, and a prominent rear GT badge. A rearview camera incorporated into the spoiler is optional on select models. Also notable is the new black front and rear aero kit with matching black lower side extensions. This new design not only increases downforce up front, and front to rear underside airflow, but it gives the styling a more aggressive lower stance thus a lower center of gravity to increase stability.

A notable new tail lamp design features three LED bulbs firing sequentially from the inside for turn indication. The sequential bulbs were a distinct Mustang feature in the ‘60’s and comeback in the 2010 model for the first time since then. Locating the reverse lamps vertically creates a modern version of the Ford classic three-lens tail lamp.
Cleverly combining modern technology with Mustang heritage is a signature of the 2010 model, in terms of design and engineering.

All of the special edition Mustang Bullitt engine and chassis elements are the base foundation of the GT, including some improvements gained from Mustang racing.
The GT’s 4.6 liter three-valve, SOHC, all-aluminum V8 is fitted with the Bullitt’s cold air induction system that increases horsepower to 315 at 6,000rpm and 325lb.ft. of torque at 4,250rpm.

This proven V8 engine is mated to a smooth shifting Tremec 5-speed manual transmission, or an optional 5-speed automatic overdrive with a button to turn of the overdrive feature to increase rpms for quicker acceleration.

The wheel and tire combinations are 1 inch bigger across the board, ranging from 17X8 inches to 19X9.5 inches, which improves handling and braking. My GT rode on 19X9 inch painted aluminum wheels wrapped with 245/45ZR19 inch low profile, Pirelli
P-Zero Nero, high-performance tires.

Mustang engineers adjusted the springs, stabilizer bars and gas-charged shocks to the independent MacPherson front and proven live-axle rear suspension to better balance the ride, steering and handling for all models. Each model feels more controlled for steering and handling, yet retains a good ride balance. Further enhancing the suspension on the GT model is a strong strut tower brace that adds torsional rigidity and stiffness to the front. The GT goes where you point it to go with quick reaction to your inputs. With the superb power-assisted rack & pinion steering system you gain confidence with every turn. This newly upgraded combination makes the 2010 GT feel as if you are riding on rails. Going even further in helping you control the direction of the new GT during severe maneuvers or when driving on slick road surfaces is AdvanceTrac Electronic Stability Control that is now standard and complements Mustang’s all-speed traction control and ABS brakes. You can of course shut down the traction and stability control systems to more easily smoke the rear wheels and let the rear end hang out during high-speed cornering.

In addition to all of the design and driving dynamics improvements, the 2010 Mustang is engineered to maintain its top government safety ratings. Standard safety equipment includes dual-stage front driver and passenger airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags, Ford’s Personal Safety System, 3-point safety belts with front pretensioners/load limiters,
front/rear crush zones, tire-pressure monitoring system, capless fuel-filler for better and safer sealing of the fuel tank, and steel beams in each door.

Like the exterior, the interior design is all new with world-class materials and execution.
I felt like I was home, playing my favorite auto racing video game, comfortable with an instrument cluster and dashboard taken from the future, and clean visibility in front and all around me. The doors open wide and the aluminum plated and lighted Mustang scripted door entry plates are inviting.

The powerful new one-piece instrument panel design is crafted in seamless soft-touch TPO (Thermoplastic Olefin) skin fully encompassing available genuine aluminum-finish panels. Mustang’s chromed-ringed gauges are easy to see and understand, and the dual-vane air registers are precisely crafted and positioned. The round end chrome-ringed air-registers are larger than last year’s model.

The instrument panel and console flow as one shape, another strong connection to Mustang heritage. The new seats add better side-bolstering, while the armrests have softer materials with high-quality stitching. My Premium GT model came with white contrasting stitching against the charcoal back interior, leather seats, and new leather-wrapped/tilting steering wheel that adds thicker aluminum trim and buttons to operate the audio/Bluetooth/cruise-control systems. This new steering wheel felt perfect in my hands. The chrome-ringed shifter bezel holds the newly designed automatic shifter, or the aluminum-topped 5-speed manual stick, and is placed perfectly for easy use, and feels comfortable when your hand is laying on top ready to shift.

The new electronic finish to the center stack design adds the latest version of Ford SYNC, with new features like 911 Assist and Vehicle Health Report. The audio and climate control buttons and knobs are integrated into the finished panel. All are easy to reach and use. You can also customize the ambient and instrument lighting through MyColor system, another industry-first, which features 125 color combinations.

Interior noise has been removed by Ford engineers. The upgraded instrument panel along with new sound deadeners added to select areas help improve interior quietness, especially at high speeds or when riding over rough roads. That makes hearing that famous Mustang roar cleaner and more ‘music to your ears’.

Standard equipment on the GT not mentioned above includes express up/down windows, thick-cut pile carpeting/floor mats, self-diming rearview mirror, power-remote side-view mirrors, remote keyless entry, dual map lamps, aluminum-faced foot pedals, center console dual cup holders, a deep storage bin, storage slots in each door, and folding 60/40 split bench seat. Options not mentioned above includes Shaker 500 or Shaker 1000 audio systems, leather-trimmed seats with driver/passenger power adjustments including lumbar, power-remote/heated/self-dimming side-view mirrors, SIRUIS satellite radio, HID headlamps, heated seats, dual-zone electronic climate control, and Ford’s Next Generation Navigation System.

With a completely redone exterior that echoes the classic Mustang designs of the past, an interior featuring world-class materials, numerous technology upgrades and an improved driving experience, the all-new 2010 Mustang is poised to become the latest classic in the proud iconic American muscle car. Test drive a 2010 GT and you’ll fall in love with the car like I did.
