We’ve all heard the joke that Lexus, translated into Japanese, actually means “Buick.” While cars like the IS-F are surprisingly quick and agile, the brand is still associated more with luxury and comfort than with performance. Even the unattainable LFA has done little to give Lexus credibility among enthusiasts, probably due to the car’s limited availability and stratospheric price. Sure it’s fast, luxurious and high-tech, but is it really worth over four times the price of a Nissan GT-R?

Lexus knows it has an identity crisis, and the Japanese luxury brand is working hard to inject more sport into its product line. Take the image seen above, which Lexus has released as a teaser of a new “concept vehicle” to be shown at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show. There are zero details known about the concept, aside from the fact that it represents the “new design direction” for Lexus. If that’s the case, we say good for Lexus; while conservative styling may have brand loyalists returning to showrooms, it isn’t drawing in many new buyers.

Expect more teaser images from Lexus in the coming weeks, and we’ll be sure to give you the details on its new concept as soon as we hear them.

If you ask us, a good CEO should have more than a passing knowledge of his company’s products, and should be able to demonstrate them competently. In the early 1990’s, a television series called “TV Nation” put this to the test, and challenged CEOs of major corporations to demonstrate their products on live TV. The only one who agreed was Ford’s CEO, Alex Trotman, who changed the oil in a Ford Explorer on camera.

Trotman’s willingness to get his hands dirty spoke volumes about his work ethic, and I’ve admired Ford ever since. After watching the video below, I feel the same way about Toyota and Aston Martin. As the script says, instead of playing golf, Akio Toyoda and Dr. Ulrich Bez go racing, and both men are accomplished drivers who are passionate about motorsports.

That message comes through on Aston Martin’s cars, but it’s lost in translation on the current crop of Toyotas. Let’s hope that changes when the FT-86 (or Scion FR-S) finally makes it to market; besides, we know that Toyoda-san himself wants to see enthusiast-targeted cars in Toyota’s product line.

In the mean time, enjoy the video, found on Autoblog, below.

Image: Lexus

As hybrids go, Lexus’ CT 200h is a mixed bag. Lexus wants to sell it as a “sporty” hybrid, but at the end of the day it’s a Toyota Prius with a nicer interior and a stiffer suspension. Even the “Sport” driving mode doesn’t add much in the way of excitement, and aside from the occasional moped or scooter, you won’t be showing tail lights to too many vehicles during a roll on. We like the CT 200h well enough (for a hybrid), but it’s got as much in common with sports cars as Justin Bieber has in common with Marilyn Manson.

That’s why we’re even more confused at Lexus’ announcement of an “F Sport” kit for the 2012 Lexus CT 200h. Check that particular option box, and you’ll get a revised body kit, a black-mesh grille, unique 17-inch wheels, F Sport sill plates, a leather steering wheel and shift knob, aluminum pedals and a retuned suspension. What you won’t get is more power, so the F Sport CT 200h has to make do with the same 134 horsepower as the standard CT 200h. Worse, there’s no option for a manual transmission; instead, the only transmission available is a CVT.

We’re sure the stiffer suspension will improve turn-in and maybe even lateral acceleration, but probably at the expense of ride quality. We fail to see the point of building a hybrid with a harsh ride and no improvement in braking or acceleration, just to slap an “F Sport” badge on it. Will Lexus sell them? Probably, but not to those of us who understand what “sport” really means.

After announcing the car in May of 2010, Lexus will finally take the wraps off the LFA Nürburgring Edition at next months Geneva Motor Show. A more aggressive, track-centric version of Lexus’ supercar, the Nürburgring Edition brings you even more of a good thing. The 4.8 liter V10 gets ten more horsepower, which raises output to 562 horsepower. Shift times are reduced by 50 milliseconds, the suspension is tightened up even further and an enhanced aerodynamic package (with a less-than-subtle rear wing) is added to improve downforce and high speed stability. Only ten percent of the LFA’s production will be Nürburgring Edition variants, which means that only fifty will be built. Ever.

Image: Lexus

If you can afford the $375,000 price of admission for an LFA, the additional $70,000 needed for the Nürburgring Edition will probably seem like Taschengeld to you, but let’s just ponder that for a second. Spending as much money as a new Z06 Corvette gets you no improvement in 0 to 60 times and perhaps a marginal improvement in lap times. Sure, the aerodynamic package will help at triple digit speeds, but unless you’ve got your own personal road course to practice on, how much time will you really spend driving north of 100 miles per hour? The LFA isn’t my cup of meat, and the Nürburgring Edition is more cup, same meat. If I had that kind of money to play around with, I’d opt for a McLaren MP4-12C, and spend the $216,000 I saved driving as many of the world’s great road courses as I could. Your mileage may vary.

[original post date: 02/10/2009] I honestly believe that the new Nissan GT-R has sparked quite an interest and crave for launch control. Many cars way before the Nissan GT-R have had their own system for a launch control either in a SMG transmission in the E46 BMW M3 or the Volkswagen’s early DSG found in the GTI.

The ultimate crave for launch control baffles me but you have to understand that I would take a full manual transmission any day over a, what Jeremy Clarkson calls them, floppy paddle gear box. Even with Nissans woes with grenaded transmissions in the GT-R, launch control is still a big hit. Even Hitler “had to launch it”.

Ever since the introduction of drive-by-wire, auto manufacturers have been toying with new electronics that improve upon the over-all safety of a vehicle. New systems come standard in many vehicles now such as dynamic skid control or also known as vehicle dynamic control or electronic stability control (name varies from each manufacturer). Many of these new systems utilize a combination of computer operated units from the ABS braking, traction control and accelerator control. I am sure if manufacturers thought they could play with these systems and make a car safer then why not develop a precise method for accelerating a vehicle with a computer to make it faster.

It is all a numbers game if you think about it. I am sure many car enthusiasts, including yourself, may have experimented with dropping your clutch at a certain RPM to get the full potential out of a launch from a dead-stop. Even you guys with automatics have almost perfected holding the brake pedal while stomping on the accelerator in preparation for a ‘launch’. What if your car could do this for you? Well, many new exotic and sports cars can but it does take the use of a special transmission or a manual transmission that is controlled by a computer, except in Porsches’ case with their newest launch control system on a full manual transmission.

Where did this idea and technology come from?

If you think about it, F1 cars among other racing cars were already using a type of the technology that we see in today’s cars fitted with dual clutch transmissions and SMG (Sequential Manual Gearbox) units. Racing is where it begins… most times. From the F1 cars now shifting well under 60 milliseconds to the Nissan GT-R’s dual clutch shifting time of around 200 milliseconds, computers have taken cars to a new level of performance where a human just simply cannot match yielding a much higher level of performance.

Cars with Launch Control

Many of the baby boomers know ‘launch control’ to be something only NASA quotes in the control room during a space shuttle launch. Now we can all experience a ‘horizontal’ launch in many of today’s technologically advanced performance vehicles.

So which cars have launch control? Below is a short list that we have compiled of all vehicles with an available launch control. If we missed any please post a comment below and let us know.

Please note: Some of the vehicles included on the list may only have a staging RPM setting which some may call “launch control” but it is not as involved as a fully automated launch control or uses a sequential shifting transmission (paddle shifter) such as in the Nissan GT-R.

‘LEXUS DOES HIGH PERFORMANCE’

The Lexus IS F high-performance sedan is the first production model to bear the brand’s ‘F’ marque. First launched in 2008, the new 2010 model features several technology options and new standard equipment as well as last year’s updated instrument cluster.

A Torsen Limited Slip differential, a new 19in. wheel design, and foldable rear headrests are now standard.

To further enhance your cerebral cravings when driving the IS F, iPod/USB connectivity, streaming audio via Bluetooth and an integrated XM satellite radio receiver are added to the standard Lexus Premium Sound system. The optional Lexus Navigation system has been updated with Voice Command casual-language voice recognition and Bluetooth phonebook download capability. The navigation system also comes with XM NavTraffic/Weather/Sports/Stocks, ready and includes a complimentary one-year trial subscription. Lexus Enform, which automatically comes with Safety Connect, is only available with navigation-equipped vehicles. Safety Connect is standard.

The 2010 Lexus IS F has it all, a very powerful high-performance V8 engine connected to the world’ first 8-speed Sport Direct Shift automatic transmission, a high-performance-tuned double-wishbone front, and multi-link rear suspension riding on 19in. light alloy BBS aluminum wheels wrapped with Bridgestone high-performance tires. The IS F beautifully mixes the unique body shape and all of the fine Lexus luxury, convenience, comfort and safety that you expect from any other Lexus vehicle but with a high-performance twist.

The IS F is exclusively powered by a performance-tuned 5.0 liter, all-aluminum, 32-valve, VVT-i V8 engine teamed to an eight-speed Sport Direct Shift transmission. The IS F engine produces 416hp at 6,600rpm and 371lb.ft. of torque at 5,200rpm. The forged crankshaft features journals polished to a mirror finish to minimize the friction generated between the connecting rods and the crankshaft. Forged sintered iron alloy connecting rods ensure high-rpm durability. High-flow cylinder heads designed by Yamaha have a lightweight valvetrain, including forged cam lobs on hollow, chain-driven camshafts, with the inside of the shafts serving as oil passages. Titanium intake valve are operated by roller rocker arms.

Several innovative technologies help to maximize efficiency and reduce emissions, including the SFT-D-4 fuel injection system (direct-to-cylinder injection system with secondary port injectors) and the electronic throttle control system with intelligence (ETCS-i).

Essentially, SFT D-4 integrates two types of fuel injection: a direct-type high-pressure fuel injection system, which provides a cooling effect in the cylinders and enables the high compression ratio (11.8:1) employed to extract maximum energy from the fuel; a set of low-pressure port fuel injectors that help produce a precise burn to optimize power and efficiency under light-and medium-load conditions. A dual air-intake system uses a primary intake passage for low and medium engine speeds. In the higher engine speed range (above 3,600rpm), both the primary and secondary passages are opened, helping boost high-rpm power.

With the IS F 5.0 liter V8, Lexus made a leap in valve-control technology with the Variable Valve Timing intelligence and Electronically controlled intake cam (VVT-iE).

An electric drive motor alters the intake camshaft phasing, which made it possible to expand the VVT operational range to lower engine speeds, where engine oil pressure is usually not high enough to operate VVT. The exhaust camshaft uses hydraulically controlled variable valve timing. A scavenge pump forces oil from the cylinder heads back to the oil pan, ensuring a reliable oil supply even during cornering that exceeds 1-g. The low-restriction dual-exhaust system terminates in distinctive stacked quad diffusers. What this all means is that you will have almost all of the torque from 2,000rpm up to redline, tremendous low end power at your disposal when you want or need it.

The world’s first eight-speed Sport Direct-Shift automatic transmission combines the performance characteristics of an automated manual-type transmission with the smoothness and refinement of a planetary-type automatic transmission. As a result you can choose between ultra-quick manual shifts for performance driving and smooth automatic shifts when convenience is the top priority. The eight speeds allow gear ratios that maximize torque up to the tire-grip limitations in the lower range while optimizing efficiency. Intuitive powertrain control optimally smoothes out off-the-line response. Artificial Intelligence-SHIFT complements the Sport switch selection by automatically adapting the shifting based on road conditions and your input. The IS F transmission is also highly responsive to uphill/downhill driving, always selecting the best gear for power or engine braking. You can shift manually either from the console shift or steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. New hydraulic-control technology allows the

IS F’s eight-speed Sport Direct Shift transmission to perform on par with manual transmissions without sacrificing the smoothness of a torque-converter automatic. Paddle-shifting operation is allowed in either D or M modes, but shifts are quicker and more direct in M mode. In M mode, the transmission will hold each gear up to 6,000rpm, and upshifts are executed in just one-tenth of a second. At higher engine speeds, downshifts are accompanied by automated and precise throttle blips to match engine rpm to vehicle speed.

Pure excitement and pleasure is yours when you work the eight-speed using the paddle shifters. The reaction time is super quick and the matching revs when downshifting is amazing. Your heart will race and your sweat will soon bead up on your forehead as you put the IS F through its paces on the open road or around curving roads. On the track 0-60mph comes in just above 4sec.

Matching the high-performance V8 engine and transmission is a stiff and sturdy chassis, a race-tuned suspension, big brakes and sticky high-performance tires.

The IS F is based on the robust IS platform, which was engineered from the start to allow a high dynamic envelope. The stiff body structure and the rear subframe are connected through several reinforcements. Much of the IS F development took place at racetracks around the world including Germany’s famed Nurburgring Nordschleife, Circuit Paul Recard in France, Japan’s Fuji Speedway and the Higashi-Fuji Technical Center in Japan.

Fuji Speedway is the IS F’s home circuit and the shape of its turn one inspired the F-logo design.

The IS F uses the IS basic double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear setup but it features a multitude of track-proven modifications. The IS F sits an inch lower on its suspension than the standard IS models, which lowers the center of gravity and enhances handling response.

Spring and damper rates are increased, and larger-diameter stabilizer bars are used. The rear setup’s control arms are specific to the IS F to optimize geometry for the 19in. wheels. In addition, the monotube shock absorbers use a larger-diameter piston rod. As on other IS models, the sophisticated shock-absorber design utilizes multi-leaf linear control valves to help improve damping force, and rebound springs offer improved body control with degrading the ride comfort.

Also, subframe suspension mounts are stiffer than on other IS models to help reduce sway and ensure control under acceleration and braking. The engine mounts are also stiffer for a more direct feel. Special jounce stoppers on both the front and rear suspensions come into play early in the compression stroke to help reduce the sway angle when cornering and to reduce dive when braking. The electric power steering (EPS) system has been remapped for improved steering response and feel while providing precise control and excellent straight-line control. It feels like you are sitting in a racecar because the reaction to your steering input, throttle input are so quick and precise. Just a little tug on the wheel moves your direction. In the Sport mode, the IS F quickly makes work of the steep curves up, down, and around the treacherous mountain roads.

Further increasing the IS F’s handling ability are big, lightweight BBS wheels wrapped with high-performing tires. The front wheels are 19X8in. and are wrapped with 225/40R19in. while the rear wheels measure 19X9in. and are wrapped with 255/35R19in. Bridgestone Pontenza tires developed specifically for the 170mph track capability of the IS F. High- rigidity hub unit bearings are engineered for rigorous, high g-force track driving.

The direct-type tire pressure monitoring system allows two sets of tires to be registered, giving you the benefit of a system with a set of track tires and winter tires. The multi-information display indicates the tire selector switch.

The ride is never harsh, just firm, with the shocks working nicely taking the bumps out of poorly paved roads that you might travel over on your journeys.

A specially calibrated version of Lexus’ innovative Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system helps provide superior handling dynamics and traction control. Combining input from a variety of sensors, VDIM is designed to anticipate the onset of a vehicle skid or slide and help correct the situation with a combination of braking, steering and throttle control in a way that is essentially transparent to you. VDIM integration provides precise management for EPS, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), traction control (TRAC), the ABS system, Brake Assist (BA), Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and engine torque (via the electronically controlled throttle).

VDIM also provides an electronically controlled brake-based limited slip differential effect on the rear wheels. During cornering, VDIM suppresses any tendency for the inside wheel to spin, transmitting more power to the outside wheel to help maintain traction and momentum. When braking on a mixed-friction surface, VDIM will direct steering assist in the direction that will help provide the greatest control.

Using a dashboard-mounted switch, you can select Normal, Sport or Snow driving modes. In Sport mode, VDIM allows high dynamic thresholds before intervening and alters steering assist to increase steering feel. Sport mode helps provide excellent optimal vehicle control on a track in areas where the skills of even top-level drivers are challenged. You can of course disengage VSC/TRAC by pressing and holding the TRAC-off button for more than three seconds. Even with VSC/TRAC off, the system still provides the brake-based limited-slip differential and ABS as before, but the new 2010 IS F now comes standard with a Torsen rear differential that will help provide additional traction during spirited driving.

Quickly and safely slowing you down from speed are big, Brembo brakes that were designed to the specifications of the Lexus engineering team. The 14.2in. vented, drilled front rotors are gripped by rigid and powerful six-piston aluminum calipers, while the 13.6in. vented and drilled rear rotors use two-piston calipers. Front bumper ducts adjacent to the foglamps stream cooling air directly to each front rotor. The brakes are finished with the Lexus name displayed on the calipers.

The interior is as luxurious as any Lexus but the IS F also features racecar cues to differentiate it from Lexus models. The interior features specially shaped leather trimmed racecar-styled 10-way powered, high-backed front bucket seats with extra side bolstering to keep you in place during hard cornering, and carbon fiber pattern trim on the door switch plates and center console. The aluminum-trimmed main gauges, unique steering wheel treatment and other special surface treatments are standard. The instrument cluster integrates an oil temperature gauge, voltmeter and shift indicator lights, and the ‘F’ logo is discretely showcased on the lower steering wheel, rear pull-down center console and outer seats cushions. You’ll also appreciate the aluminum-faced foot pedals and chrome/leather stick shifter, as you work the engine and transmission.

A multi-information display located within the speedometer integrates a trip computer that provides outside temperature, driving range, average fuel consumption, etc. The display also includes an oil-maintainance reminder and system warning lights.

Also coming standard inside is SmartAccess keyless entry and push-button start/stop. Standard amenities not mentioned above include dual-zone automatic climate control, a pollen filter and smog detector, power moonroof with one-touch open/close, power tilt/telescoping leather wrapped sporty steering wheel, three-position memory for front seats, steering wheel and mirrors, all power windows with automatic up/down operation, dual map lamps, dual vanity mirrors with lights, thick cut pile carpeting with floor mats, center console with dual cupholders and storage bin, cruise-control, HID headlamps, an auto-dimming reaview mirror, automated rain-sensing wipers and heated auto-dimming outside mirrors with integrated puddle lamps.

The standard Lexus Premium Audio system features a six-disc, in-dash CD changer, 13-speakers and an integrated XM satellite radio receiver. Automatic sound leveler maintains consistent sound levels in response to varying outside noise levels. Convenient USB-and mini-jacks in the center console enables connection of an iPod or other portable music players.

Like all Lexus models, the IS F offers a Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound audio system with 14-speakers, a discrete 5.1 multi-channel playback with 7.1-channel speaker architecture, 300-watts of power, and can play CD’s, DVD’s plus MP3/WMA-formatted CD’s. DVD movies can be viewed on the navigation system’s 7in. color screen when the parking brake is engaged.

Based on the IS sport sedan, the IS F is clearly differentiated when viewed from the front, side and the rear. A trapezoid-shaped front bumper fascia, a theme that is repeated at the rear, sets off the V-shaped grille. The hood’s raised center section makes room for the V8 engine, and the front fenders were widened to envelop the 19in. low-profile tires. Total grille area is increased to ensure adequate cooling for the 5.0 liter V8, and both upper and lower grilles feature a special wire-mesh pattern. The lower grille is flanked by large brake cooling ducts adjacent to standard foglamps. The front fenders wear a discrete silver, black and blue ‘F’ marque. The car’s wedge-like profile is accentuated by functional front fender air outlets with lower edges that transition into larger rocker panels and continue as a character line into the rear bumper. The rear view conveys a strong parting signature for the IS F, with dramatic trapezoid shape and easily recognizable design elements. Four vertically stacked exhaust diffusers, two per side, are integrated into the rear bumper. Above them, LED stop and tail behind clear lenses give the IS F a unique nighttime appearance. The subtle rear spoiler is one of the many aerodynamic enhancements, which also include special underbody panels to optimize airflow. Contributing to both design and performance, new 19in. forged-alloy wheels by BBS feature a dark-gray finish and an asymmetrical 10-spoke design.

The new IS F offers an all-new telematics system, Lexus Enform with Safety Connect.

Safety Connect, the cornerstone of the services, is available on both non-navigation and navigation-equipped IS F and offers four safety and security features: automatic collision notification, stolen vehicle location, emergency assistance button and enhanced roadside assistance, which adds GPS data to the already included warranty-based Lexus roadside service.

Lexus Enform, available only on navigation-equipped vehicles, includes all of the Safety Connect features and builds upon them with the premium services of Destination Assist and eDestination. Destination Assist agents are available via the on-board cellular equipment and can help you find a specific address, a business by name, or a type of business, and even Zagat rated restaurants, and then send the coordinates to the navigation system for routing.

Standard safety systems to keep you and your passengers safe in the event of a collision start with Lexus Passive-safety technology that includes a reinforced passenger compartment that helps protects the occupants with front and rear crush structures. Seatbelt pretensioners and force limiters are used in all four seating positions. In addition to advanced dual-stage front airbags and front-seat-mounted side airbags, the Lexus Supplemental Restraint System includes side-curtain airbags that extend from the A-pillar to C-pillar, plus knee airbags for the driver and front passenger.

The optional Pre-Collision System can help reduce collision damage. The package includes Dynamic Radar Cruise Control that detects obstacles in front of the car. The rear backup camera, included with the navigation system, automatically projects an image of what its lens can detect behind the car onto the navigation screen when the transmission is in reverse. The optional Intuitive Park Assist system uses ultrasonic sensors to detect objects close to the car’s front and rear bumpers, alerting you and showing the distance to objects in the multi-information display within the speedometer.

The new 2010 Lexus IS F is an excellent high-performing luxury sedan along the lines of the BMW M3 and Audi S4 sedans in terms of overall performance and interior comfort, luxury and safety while saving the consumer thousands of dollars when making the decision to go with the IS F. Prices start at $57,760.00.

The all-new 2010 Lexus HS250h hybrid will keep more of your money in your pockets as you pass gas stations, and will also have you seated in a Lexus with all of the luxury, convenience and safety that you expect from a Lexus. The Lexus HS250h is the first luxury hybrid to achieve an EPA Estimated Rating of 35mpg combined and is the first luxury car to come standard with a supplemental restraint system with 10 airbags.

Hybrid efficiency is at the core of the new HS250h and Lexus’s first four-cylinder gas engine and latest hybrid system take advantage of the company’s continuous engineering advances to maximize fuel economy, minimize emissions and deliver driving pleasure.

A highly efficient engine design, an exhaust heat recovery system, major efforts to reduce parasitic losses, a new evaporative emissions system and driver-selectable driving modes all make notable contributions. Significant efforts were also made to minimize engine noise.

An Atkinsion-cycle engine design was chosen for its high efficiency and compatibility with hybrid operation in the new HS. The twin-cam engine uses four-valves per cylinder and Variable Valve Time with Intelligence on the intake side. The engine is undersquare, with an 88.5mm bore diameter and 96mm stroke, and has a relatively high compression ratio of 12.5:1. Peak output equals 147hp and in combination with the hybrid drive motor, the HS generates 187 total system horsepower. That is the most of any other dedicated hybrid motor.

Careful design of the intake system reduces engine pumping losses and its twin resonators minimize intake noise. The cooling system uses a modular construction that combines an aluminum engine radiator, hybrid system radiator, AC condenser and fan into a single assembly for minimal weight. Plus, the electric fan speed is controlled via Pulse Width Modulation to reduce energy consumption and noise. Careful ducting of the cooling system helps prevent hot engine air recirculation that tends to occur at low speeds and while idling, further enhancing efficiency.

One of the keys to lower fuel consumption involves heat. Similar to the Lexus RX450h luxury SUV, the HS employs an Exhaust Heat Recovery system that captures the heat of spent exhaust gases to speed engine coolant warm-up and allow the hybrid system to stop the engine earlier, and more often in the driving cycle when it’s not needed, for example in lower power demand conditions in city driving. Overall, the system can improve fuel efficiency by as much as 7% in low ambient temperatures.

Using a two-motor hybrid system, the new HS uses a 141hp drive motor that combined with the 147hp gas engine. A second motor in the hybrid system serves as both engine starter and generator to charge the hybrid battery pack.

The efficient two-motor system also uses an electronically-controlled continuously variable transmission (CVT) that is a model of efficiency, simplicity and compact size with extremely smooth and quiet operation. A motor speed reduction planetary gear unit helps provide high power output in this small package. The HS also uses an easy-to-operate shift-by-wire system that eliminates the need for bulky shift cables, saving space and weight while allowing much more design freedom in placing the shift lever in the interior. An electric transmission oil pump eliminates another source of parasitic loss to further increase efficiency. Electronic operation allows a control strategy that invokes the oil pump only when needed, and since the oil also flows over the drive motor, overall efficiency of the motor and transmission are improved. I was truly impressed with the smooth and quiet operation of the motor and CVT.

The HS also incorporates a drive-mode switch that allows you to select between four modes: Normal, Power Eco and EV. Each switch position changes the rate of throttle opening for a given throttle-pedal angle. Normal mode has an essentially linear throttle response that gives naturally progressive power. Power mode can be selected for a more responsive feel when desired, such as when merging onto fast moving freeways or when you want to quickly maneuver around slow city traffic. In Eco mode, AC settings are adjusted and the throttle response is reduced relative to the pedal angle to emphasize fuel economy, such as when you are in rush hour traffic or on short trips around town with little traffic. Under certain circumstances, the EV mode can allow the vehicle to be driven short distances using only the electric motors. Acceleration from 0-60mph was surprisingly quick at 8.4sec. Responsive passing acceleration benefits from the instant torque of the electric motor and the CVT’s ability to quickly find the optimal gear ratio to enhance your driving experience.

The HS250h body design received considerable attention to aerodynamics. Ambitious goals were set requiring designers to work closely with aerodynamics from the outset to create a low-drag form in an attractive, spacious, yet compact package. Their work yielded a coefficient of drag of 0.27, among the best, enhancing fuel economy at highway speeds.

The low nose encourages airflow while also helping enhance vehicle dynamics. Smooth transitions along the front fender and A-pillar avoid disturbance of the airflow. Subtle front-and-rear bumper spoilers and an available rear-lip spoiler contribute to low drag and minimize lift. The body sides taper from the center pillar to the rear where they meet the slightly kicked-out tail lamps, helping reduce drag-inducing wake turbulence. Also, a gull wing-shaped roof panel enabled designers to lower its profile to reduce air resistance and with a shape that is naturally stiffer than a conventional curved roof, engineers were able to reduce its thickness for further weight reduction. These improvements also lessen noise as the HS cuts through the air at speed.

Several measures were also taken under the car to promote airflow and reduce drag. Airflow resistance in the engine compartment was improved by optimizing the duct profiles around the radiator. Careful positioning of numerous underfloor covers plus added diffuser fins on the rear covers further reduce drag while enhancing straight-line control.

Underlying the HS250h’s forward-think interior design is the implementation of bioplastic material. Known more formally as Ecological Plastic, the bioplastic uses plant sources as raw material and is used for parts of the interior upholstery in the car. Ecological Plastics are used in a number of injection-molded, foam and board components throughout the car, including trunk compartment trim, cowl side trim, door scuff plates, seat cushions and package tray. Overall, approximately 30% of the combined interior and trunk are covered in Ecological Plastic.

From the driver’s perspective, several important developments inside the HS250h transform the driving experience, making it easier and more enjoyable while also helping to enhance the driver’s attention to the road ahead.

The standard Lexus Premium Audio system offers a comprehensive suite that includes voice recognition, Bluetooth technology, an integrated satellite radio receiver, and USB/iPod connectivity operated via steering wheel controls or from the display screen.

A multi-informational display situated in the instrument cluster keeps you informed of the numerous actions controlled by the steering wheel-mounted switches.

The car’s next-generation navigation system is optional and features Lexus’s exclusive Remote Touch controller with user-adjustable haptic feedback. The innovative controller, similar to a computer mouse, eliminates the need for touch screen controls, allowing the pop-up navigation system to be mounted further up the center stack and away from the driver. The driver benefits with a clear, high-resolution screen, improved site lines and reduced eye movement. These advances combined with the physical feedback provided by the controller make the system extremely easy to use. Just point and click.

Voice command, a casual-language-based voice recognition feature, is standard on navigation-equipped vehicles. This new technology allows you to give fewer and more flexible, conversational commands in a specific order for easier access to audio, climate, and navigation system functions to help you focus more on the road ahead.

Another driver-inspired development is an optional Heads-Up Display (HUD). This system projects a miniature display on a small portion of the windshield in front of you, significantly reducing eye movement to see frequently viewed information such as vehicle speed. The display has been developed for maximum visibility, with crisp, high-contrast white lighting that makes it possible to see even in difficult lighting conditions such as driving on snow-covered roads. In addition to speed, the system also displays turn-by-turn navigation arrows and driver-assist warnings, as well as audio information and Touch Tracer (sensors on steering-wheel switches will show an image of switch layout in the HUD) both of which can be turned off separately from the rest of the display.

The high-visibility, electro-luminescent instrument cluster offers new ideas of keeping track of the various systems in the car and helps the driver to conserve fuel. A hybrid system indicator displays the hybrid system output and regenerative charging status, simultaneously indicating the efficiency of the system related to your driving style. An auxiliary Eco Drive Indicator light further assists you in maintaining the most economical use of system power.

The multi-information display resides in the center of the hybrid system indicator. It uses high-contrast organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology for maximum visibility and indicates various conditions such as fuel consumption, ambient temperature and cruising range. Also, several vehicle functions can be customized through use of the display with the multi-information switch.

Like most Lexus vehicles the HS250h has an optional navigation system equipped with a back-up monitor. In addition, the new HS250h offers an available Wide-view Front Monitor to help enhance your ability to see in the traditionally blind areas around the front of the car. The front grille-mounted camera has a maximum 190-degree lateral field of view and allows you to see as close as 24in. in front of the car within an 83-degree vertical field of view. Images from the two monitors feed into the available park assist ECU which processes and sends them to the navigation system display at separate times depending on whether the vehicle is moving forward or backward. The front monitor operates in either of two modes. Normal mode allows you to manually operate the camera with a switch on the lower left of the dashboard area. In auto mode, images from the front monitor automatically displays when the vehicle slows to about 6mph or less and automatically shuts off when speed rises above 7.5mph. You can also toggle from the front monitor on or off while in the auto mode. To other items related to visibility of your surroundings when driving is the slim A-pillar structure that helps improve visibility when pulling out of a parking space, inside or outside. HS250h engineers were able to create a relatively slim A-pillar structure to help improve visibility without degrading the structural integrity. Also, the HS250h uses side glass with a water-repellant coating that improves wet weather visibility and aids defrosting performance.

As it is with ride, handling, noise and vibration, the body structure plays a key role in the fundamental safety characteristics of the new HS250h. To help protect you and your passengers, the body is designed to be strong but strategically resilient to help absorb and distribute energy in the event of a crash. High tension steel components are carefully located in the body structure, doors, and other areas to help ensure strength in key areas.

All HS250h hybrids come with a class-leading 10-airbags with dual-stage and knee airbags up front, side curtain airbags and both front and rear seat-mounted side airbags to help protect front and rear passengers in certain types of severe frontal and side collisions. The front passenger is equipped with a twin-chamber airbag that further helps provide occupant protection. Additionally, front and outer rear seatbelts incorporate pretentioners with force-limiters to help further protect occupants in certain collisions. Active front head restraints are also standard.

An optional Pre-Collision system (PCS) with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and Driver Monitor uses millimeter-wave radar to measure and maintain a pre-set following distance from a vehicle traveling ahead. The radar sensor is designed to detect certain obstacles in front of the car, and a PCS computer with vehicle speed, steering angle and yaw-rate inputs, helps to determine whether a collision is highly possible. In such a situation, PCS alerts you with an audible and visual warnings, preemptively retracts front seatbelts and pre-initializes Brake Assist (BA) so that increased braking will be applied the instant you depress the brake pedal. All of these safety systems only enhance the driving pleasure and enjoyment, never getting in the way of your regular or current driving style.

The interior of the HS250hp was designed to communicate the high level of innovation inherent in the car with the craftsmanship expected from Lexus products. Lexus’s exclusive Remote Touch navigation system controller is a focal point of the interior design because of the many times that you will be using it. As a real Lexus luxury car, the HS250h is comfortable with plenty of room for five people; as such the designers were intent on creating a fresh, appealing design befitting the brand that is also hybrid-distinct.

Comfortable, supportive, 10-way power adjustable leather trimmed seats are standard (8-way power-adjustable front passenger seat), and special soft touch stitched details on the center stack and instrument hood provide an extra premium touch in the cabin. There are two levels of the new HS250h, standard and premium. Interior trim color include black leather, new light gray leather, parchment leather, and for the optional touring package, a distinctive black/light gray two-tone leather trim. A high-finish dark gray trim is featured on the standard model while the premium model has brown walnut wood trim. Front door trims also mimics the shape of the center stack and armrest providing a comfortable symmetry. The steering wheel center pad appears to float on the wheel, surround by control switches that also mimic the design and color of those on the center stack. The sporty leather-wrapped steering wheel also feature powered tilt/telescoping adjustments for the perfect placement in you hands.

Comfort, quietness and convenience are a hallmark of all Lexus interiors so the HS250h comes with a host of each. When more than one driver uses the HS250h, an available new memory system allows individual driver settings to be recalled automatically by individual keys. There are three keys and each set the steering wheel position, seat position, exterior mirror positions and AC settings. The leather front bucket seats with the premium model get heated and ventilated seats that are trimmed with semi-aniline leather.

Climate control in the HS250h is designed to provide comfort and clean air for all passengers. A dual temperature control system is used for front occupants and a dedicated rear blower is mounted in the center console promoting quick cool down in the rear. A plasma cluster ion generator, A/C clean air filter and a pollen removal mode help clean air inside the cabin. The interior gets a little extra help from the windshield, which has infrared-ray reduction properties that help keep the interior cool, allowing a smaller size A/C system than would be required. A 10-speaker, 137-watt Lexus Premium audio system features a six-disc CD changer, a subwoofer and center speaker standard. The system uses two-way woofer and tweeter systems in both front and rear for rich, clear sound quality. Real audiophiles will appreciate the optional Mark Levinson 5.1 channel Premium Surround Sound system that features 330-watts at only 0.1% total harmonic distortion and the system uses 15-strategically placed speakers for outstanding audio performance and sound quality. I loved the sounds coming from the speakers; it is one of the best factory installed systems.

Nimble handling, excellent body control, smooth ride and low noise in the HS250h are the best of any dedicated hybrid vehicle that I have tested, and they begin with a stiff body structure. The HS body is designed with superior stiffness overall with added focus in strategically-located areas that have the greatest effect on ride, handling and noise.

Designed to balance handling, ride and NVH at high levels, the HS uses a rigid and compact MacPherson strut front suspension. The setup employs a 24mm stabilizer bar plus large diameter pistons and rebound springs in the shock absorbers to help provide superior ride control at high speeds or when driving on curving roads getting off a freeway or in the mountains. The steering rack is directly mounted (no rubber bushings) to create an unfiltered connection between it and the suspension members to help accurately communicate what is happening where the rubber meets the pavement. Both setups reacted quickly to my inputs and I was surprised how easy it was to slice through the curving roads in the mountains.

The double-wishbone rear suspension also balances performance and comfort and is important to its overall handling. Its compact design uses low-mount coil springs that also help improve cargo space. As in the front suspension, rebound springs are used to aid both handling and ride, and all mountings and bushings are optimized to help provide an excellent combination of ride, handling and low noise. I was amazed how well the HS250h handled during my test drive. Unlike other dedicated hybrids, I looked forward to driving the car as much as I could.

The new HS rides on standard 17X7in. alloy wheels and are wrapped with 215/55R17in. all-season tires. The premium model comes with 18X8in. alloy wheels wrapped with larger 225/45R18in. all-season tires. All wheels feature the direct-type Tire Pressure Monitoring System.

Getting back to the fun and pleasure of driving the new HS250h is the improvement in the electric power steering (EPS) system. The vehicle-speed sensitive steering has been optimized to provide you with the ideal steering feel at any speed. Inertia compensation control, friction feedback and recovery control assist in tailoring the steering feel and effort that is most effective for a majority of drivers. I thought that the feedback and on center feel were superb.

Like all Lexus vehicles, the new HS250h braking system is comprehensive, and as a Lexus hybrid it is augmented by regenerative braking which also helps recharge the hybrid battery pack and improve fuel economy. The HS uses a newly developed electronic controlled brake (ECB) system actuator that is managed by the ECB computer and acts on the system’s hydraulic brake components. The ECB computer also controls the interaction between the for-wheel disc friction brakes and the regenerative brake system. The new ECB actuator is smaller, lighter and consumes less electrical current than previous systems, making additional contributions to fuel economy. Enhancements in the system design also help improve brake feel and controllability. To my foot the feeling was always linear and always direct reacting to the force I applied.

The HS features 10.8in. vented discs up front and 11.1in. solid discs in the rear. Braking control is enhanced with standard ABS and Brake Assist. Further enhancing of your control during braking is standard all-speed traction control and electronic stability control to help you maintain your desired direction under severe braking maneuvers over slick pavement.

Standard features not mentioned above include: vehicle theft-deterrent system, courtesy lights mounted on the doors, illuminated glove box, front dual cupholders, rear seat center pull-down armrest with dual cupholders, front map lights/rear cargo light, LED foot lights, two-12-volt power outlets, programmable garage door opener, manual front seatbelt adjustment, power windows/door locks with all express up/down and anti-lock-out, four grab handles, dual sliding/illuminated sun visors, electric fuel door and trunk releases, center console with storage bin and dual cupholders, front/rear door cupholders can hold 20oz. water bottles, tool kit, first aid kit, coat hooks, cut pile carpeting, carpeted floor mats, five separate manually adjustable headrests, scheduled maintainance indicator light, exclusive chrome-accented hybrid front grille design, blue highlights added to front and rear ‘L’ logo, engine cover, headlamp, rear combination lamps clusters, LED brake and tail lights, color keyed lower front and rear spoilers to improve fuel economy, turn signal lamps integrated into side mirrors, puddle lamps integrated into the side mirrors, moonroof, aluminum hood, sound insulation placed in door panels, instrument panel and floor mats, SmartAccess key system for entry and push buttons start/stop, variable intermittent wipers, self-dimming inside mirror with compass, auto on/off headlamps, heated outside mirrors, foglamps. The Premium model gets above and rain-sensing wipers.

The all-new 2010 Lexus HS250h is on the cutting edge of hybrid energy driven automobiles and is injected with the Lexus knowhow of quality, workmanship, and engineering. It is the first ‘purpose’ built luxury hybrid and is perfect for the family that is used to the finer things in life that want to keep their driving ‘footprint’ as small as possible.

Prices start at just $34,650.00 for the standard model and up to $37,420.00 for the premium model. The new HS250h is another ‘industry first’ for Lexus.

Toyota Announces Fix for Accelerator Pedal Entrapment Problem

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration today announced that Toyota has identified a vehicle-based remedy to fix a sudden acceleration safety issue involving floor mats trapping accelerator pedals in various Toyota and Lexus models. Toyota announced the recall of these vehicles in early October and said it would soon develop a vehicle-based remedy to reduce the risk of a crash due to accelerator pedal entrapment.

The models involved in the recall are: 2007 to 2010 MY Camry, 2005 to 2010 MY Avalon, 2004 to 2009 MY Prius, 2005-2010 MY Tacoma, 2007-2010 MY Tundra, 2007-2010 MY ES 350, 2006-2010 MY IS 250, and 2006 to 2010 MY IS 350.

NHTSA said Toyota plans to reconfigure the accelerator pedal, and in some cases the shape of the floor surface under the pedal, to address the risk of pedal entrapment due to floor mat interference, particularly with regard to inappropriate or improperly attached floor mats. At the same time, Toyota will develop replacement pedals for these vehicles, which will become available for some models in April 2010. Toyota will provide owners with the new pedal, when it becomes available, even if the vehicle has already received the modified pedal under the recall.

In addition, vehicles with any genuine Toyota or Lexus accessory all-weather floor mats will be provided with newly-designed replacement driver- and front-passenger side all-weather mats.

NHTSA also said that Toyota will, in addition to these announced vehicle-based remedies, install a brake override system on the involved Camry, Avalon and Lexus ES 350, IS 350 and IS 250 models as an “extra measure of confidence.” The brake override system would ensure the vehicle would stop if both the brake and the accelerator pedals are simultaneously applied. NHTSA is particularly pleased that Toyota is taking this additional step.

NHTSA said that Toyota intends to notify vehicle owners on a rolling basis, starting with owners of the ES 350, Camry, and Avalon vehicles. While awaiting Toyota’s notification, NHTSA urges owners to remove all removable driver’s side floor mats and not replace them until their vehicles have received the remedies being provided by Toyota. Toyota will begin making the necessary fixes to the recalled vehicles beginning early in 2010, perhaps in January. Initially, Toyota dealers will be instructed on how to reshape existing accelerator pedals. Later, replacement accelerator pedals will be available for installation on vehicles not yet remedied or, if the owner so chooses, even to replace the modified pedals.

For more information, consumers are urged to contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331 or the NHTSA hotline at 1-888-327-4236.

PRESS RELEASE:

Toyota Announces Details of Remedy to Address Potential Accelerator Pedal Entrapment
Torrance, Calif., November 25, 2009 – - Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. (TMS) announced today details of the vehicle-based remedy to address the root cause of the potential risk for floor mat entrapment of accelerator pedals in certain Toyota and Lexus models. Toyota issued a consumer safety advisory on September 29 on this issue and has, as an interim measure, commenced the mailing of safety notices to certain Toyota and Lexus owners on October 30.

The models involved are: 2007 to 2010 MY (model year) Camry, 2005 to 2010 MY Avalon, 2004 to 2009 MY Prius, 2005 to 2010 MY Tacoma, 2007 to 2010 MY Tundra, 2007 to 2010 MY ES350, 2006 to 2010 MY IS250, and 2006 to 2010 MY IS 350.

The specific measures of the vehicle-based remedy are as follows:

1. The shape of the accelerator pedal will be reconfigured to address the risk of floor mat entrapment, even when an older-design all-weather floor mat or other inappropriate floor mat is improperly attached, or is placed on top of another floor mat. For the ES350, Camry, and Avalon models involved, the shape of the floor surface underneath will also be reconfigured to increase the space between the accelerator pedal and the floor.

2. Vehicles with any genuine Toyota or Lexus accessory all-weather floor mat will be provided with newly-designed replacement driver- and front passenger-side all-weather floor mats.

In addition, as a separate measure independent of the vehicle-based remedy, Toyota will install a brake override system onto the involved Camry, Avalon, and Lexus ES 350, IS350 and IS 250 models as an extra measure of confidence. This system cuts engine power in case of simultaneous application of both the accelerator and brake pedals.

Toyota is in the process of completing development of these actions and for the ES350, Camry, and Avalon will start notifying owners of the involved vehicles via first-class mail by the end of this year. The remedy process regarding the other five models will occur on a rolling schedule during 2010.

Dealers will be trained and equipped to make the necessary modifications to these models starting at the beginning of 2010. Initially, dealers will be instructed on how to reshape the accelerator pedal for the repair. As replacement parts with the same shape as the modified pedal become available, they will be made available to dealers for the repair, beginning around April 2010. Customers who have had the remedy completed will have the opportunity to receive a new pedal if they desire.

In the meantime, owners of the involved vehicles are asked to take out any removable driver’s floor mat and not replace it with any other floor mat until they are notified of the vehicle-based remedy, as notified in the consumer safety advisory and the interim notice.

The brake override system will be made standard equipment throughout the Toyota and Lexus product lines starting with January 2010 production of ES350 and Camry and is scheduled to be incorporated into new production of most models by the end of 2010.

The safety of our owners and the public is our utmost concern and Toyota has and will continue to thoroughly investigate and take appropriate measures to address any defect trends that are identified.

Owners who have further questions are asked to visit www.toyota.com or www.lexus.com or contact the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331 or Lexus Customer Assistance at 1-800-295-3987.
