Mazda Minagi Concept: Can A Crossover Be Sexy?

Mazda is set to debut their Minagi concept at March’s Geneva Auto Show, and that’s significant for two main reasons: it’s the first use of Mazda’s latest Kodo design language, and it’s the first baby SUV under the Mazda brand that isn’t simply a warmed over Ford. It’s significant for reasons beyond this as well, but make no mistake: the Minagi is Mazda’s way of telling the world they’ll be just fine without Ford. Given disappointing sales of the Mazda 2 and all but nonexistant sales of their current compact SUV, the Tribute, Mazda badly needs to generate some excitement over upcoming products, and the compact crossover segment is a great place to start. 2009 Mazda MAZDA6i Grand Touring Review and Test Drive

The original Mazda6, first introduced for the model year 2003, made Zoom-Zoom the two most evocative words in automotive lexicon. The sport sedan was the first Mazda vehicle to benefit from the spirit of a true sports car infused in a five-passenger, 4-door sedan. Lessons learned from that car plus the award-winning Mazda CX-7 and CX-9 crossovers encouraged a clean-sheet approach to building this latest mid-size sedan from Mazda. Most importantly, though, this is the first Mazda vehicle designed, engineered, developed and manufactured in the U.S.

Compared to the original Mazda6, this new edition rides on a 4.5-inch longer wheelbase, with wider front and rear tracks. This larger package not only increases interior measurements, it moves the Mazda6 from the bottom to the top of the mid-size class as defined by SAE and EPA volume measures.

While gas prices continue the fall, the smart money is still being played in the high mpg rated vehicles. First introduced in 2008, the 2009 Mazda Tribute Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) gives back 30+ mpg with all the flexibility and comfort found in a SUV.

The 2009 Tribute hybrid comes with a new 2.5 liter iVCT 4-cylinder gasoline engine with Atkinson-cycle combustion for improved efficiency, and produces 153hp. At speeds over 25mph, when maximum acceleration is desired, the 70-kWatt electric traction motor also provides an added boost to the drive wheels. Also new for 2009 are front and rear stabilizer bar, power-assisted ventilated front disc and rear drum brakes, automatic on/off headlights, standard satellite radio, steering wheel audio controls and Dynamic Stability Control, Roll Stability Control and Traction Control.
