‘ZOOM ZOOM POCKET ROCKET’

From a distance the all-new 2010 MazdaSpeed3 may look like its Mazda3 siblings with its five-point grille and sleek lines, but upon closer inspection and just one minute behind the wheel will prove otherwise.

The all-new MazdaSpeed3 blends the five-door functionality of the all-new Mazda3 5-door with bolder, more aggressive styling and exhilarating performance to meet the needs of driving enthusiasts with active lifestyles. Carrying forward the award-winning MZR 2.3 liter DISI Turbo engine, the new MazdaSpeed3 builds on the legendary performance of the original while adding a fresh new look and even better handling.

The design of the all-new MazdaSpeed3 evolves the model’s visual identity to create a sportier, more aggressive look. The result is a more emotional design that takes the sporty, agile nature of the new MazdaSpeed3 to higher levels.

The MazdaSpeed3 is easily distinguished from its siblings. Starting at the front you’ll notice a lower air dam and round foglamps that frame an organic, metallic-black grille. The hood now features a wide intercooler scoop to improve charge air-cooling, and the front fenders are flared to contain the car’s wider tires.

From the side, the new 18X7.5in. aluminum wheel design is unique, but modeled closely on the deeply sculpted, expressive, and very lightweight 19in. forged wheels on the RX-8 R3. Sculpted side skirts and a lower stance also give away the MazdaSpeed3’s sinister motives. From the rear, larger dual exhaust tips, a rear valance painted the same metallic black as the grille, and a larger, roof-mounted wing give it away.

Nagare-inspired design defines the exterior and continues into the cabin, which features color coordination and materials chosen to excite you and your passengers every time they take a seat. Black is the keynote color employed throughout the interior, while the seats and trim fabric have an organic red graphic design. This MazdaSpeed3-exclusive design is distributed throughout, with red stitching enhancing the sporty interior character on the steering wheel, door trim, seats, shift lever boot and center armrest.

The dashboard is designed to give a roomy feel while displaying critical information up high and deep into the dashboard, closer to your field of vision and focal point. The instrument cluster also includes a new LED turbo boost gauge positioned between the speedometer and tachometer. The manually operated, deeply bolstered front bucket sport seats are designed to provide support without compromising everyday riding comfort.

The new MazdaSpeed3 continues to use Mazda’s award-winning MZR 2.3 liter DISI (direct injection spark ignition) turbocharged and intercooled powerplant. It delivers 263hp at 5,500rpm and 280lb.ft. of torque at 3,000rpm, it made the original MazdaSpeed3 the most powerful front-drive performance car under $25,000.00, and remains one of the strongest engines in its class today.

With no need to increase power, the development team focused on harnessing that power more effectively. Engine output itself is more consistent, thanks to the hood-mounted intercooler scoop that not only improves intercooler airflow over the grille-mounted intercooler duct of last-year’s car, but also frees up grille space for a fresh-air duct to feed the engine’s intake. Breathing cooler air improves efficiency, boosting both real-world power and fuel economy.

The gear ratios in the compact, three-shaft 6-speed gearbox have also been revised with 2nd through 5th gear all getting slightly taller to make better use of the engine’s abundant torque. The new gear spacing and refined engine calibration are focused on providing more linear, seamless power delivery. The advanced torque-sensing conical limited slip differential torque management system minimizes torque steer by adjusting torque output based on gear position and steering angle, has also been recalibrated. The new gear ratios allow more of the engine’s torque to be utilized in the lower gears while still keeping torque steer at a manageable level.

The new MazdaSpeed3’s body shell benefits from a focused effort at strengthening the most important parts of the structure. The use of high-strength and ultra-high strength steel in the safety structures like bumpers and side impact beams has nearly doubled, making these areas both stronger and lighter. The suspension mounting points all gain rigidity from the use of thicker sheet metal in high-stress areas and extensive use of weld bonding, a hybrid joining technique combining conventional spot welds with structural adhesives. Torsional stiffness around the rear suspension mounts is improved roughly 2%, while deflection around the rear liftgate is reduced by nearly 40%.

In general, a stiffer structure allows firmer suspension tuning without compromising ride comfort. In the case of the new MazdaSpeed3, that firmer suspension was accomplished with stiffer springs, higher damper rates, and revised mounting points for the front stabilizer bar that reduces bushing deflection and increases the bar’s effectiveness. Combined with wider, higher-grip 225/40R18in. Dunlop SP Sport 2050 performance tires, the MazdaSpeed3’s new suspension tuning marries unflappable control with a comfortable everyday ride. While stiffer than the Mazda3 Sport, the ride is never harsh.

This new pocket rocket from Mazda zooms out to 60mph from a standstill in just 5.4sec. with only a minimum of torque steering so straight-line acceleration is improved.

Steering feel and response have been improved through more rigid 3-point mounting of the steering rack, compared to the previous 2-point system. The hydraulic power steering pump has also been removed from the engine and is now driven by an electric motor. This electro-hydraulic power assisted steering (EHPAS) reduces parasitic drag on the engine, lowers power steering fluid temperature, and gives much more flexibility for the development team to dial in steering feel. Rigid high-speed steering feel can now be accomplished without suffering heavy steering at low speeds. I found the feel at speed and at slow speed to be well balanced with great on center feel and a great feel for the road surface. The reaction time to my inputs was spot-on, just like a racecar.

More Zoom Zoom acceleration needs stronger brakes and the new MazdaSpeed3 comes with exceptional braking power. Brake feel in hard braking has been improved through the upgrade of the brake assist from mechanical to a new electronically-controlled system. Brake assist shortens stopping distance in panic-stop situations by applying full brake pressure during the moment of hesitation that most drivers exhibit in the instant after first pressing the brakes. Electronic Brake Force Distribution also helps to keep brake bias of the front to rear braking balanced as needed. Up front are 12.6in vented discs clamped with dual aluminum calipers while the rear features 11in. solid discs clamped with single, sliding aluminum calipers. When entering a corner at high speed the brakes felt very linear as I applied the binders to slow me down then powering out of the curve.

The 2010 MazdaSpeed3 is loaded with all the goodies a driving enthusiast wants, but without anything that would add undue weight. Standard features and equipment include variable intermittent wipers, roof-mounted aerodynamic antenna, illuminated vanity mirrors, electroluminescent gauges, aluminum pedals, MazdaSpeed3-branded black/red cloth/leather seats, door trim interior trim, floor mats, MazdaSpeed3 aluminum scuff plates, power windows/door locks, rear intermittent wipers/washer, 60/40 rear folding seat with pull-down armrest/dual cupholders, tilt-telescoping/leather-wrapped sport steering wheel, multi-information display, cruise-control, dual front cupholders and door pockets, center console with sliding padded armrest with storage, welcome lighting, black/red decoration panel, and dual-zone climate control. An available MazdaSpeed3 Tech Package offers advanced keyless entry, push-button start/stop, a compact full-color navigation system, Sirius satellite radio, a perimeter alarm, six CD changer, and Bose Centerpoint surround sound-five-channel surround sound system engineered cooperatively with Bose and 10-speakers.

To keep you and your passengers safe in the event of a collision is a full complement of safety features including 5-passenger 3-point safety belts, dual front airbags, tire pressure monitoring system, active front headrest, LATCH child seat anchors, anti-theft engine immobilizer and side-impact airbags and curtains.

After test driving the all-new 2010 MazdaSpeed3 sport 5-door sedan you’ll agree that it has the bold looks, power, performance and interior features that could only cost more money as the new model is still the best performing sedan with a sticker price of just $23,195.00 and a loaded price of just $25,840 including destination charges. Get ready for more Zoom Zoom fun at the wheel.

The all-new 2010 Mazda 3s 4-door Grand Touring edition offers the consumer bolder styling, more power and performance, more comfortable interior and added standard safety systems. The car is an overall sophistication that ventures beyond the sport-compact segment to rival import models costing thousands more.

Realizing that the Zoom-Zoom emotional spirit is both static and dynamic, Mazda gave the new 3i a more expressive and sophisticated interior and exterior with added sportiness. New features-many of which are borrowed from the new Mazda6-are also introduced in here with the aid of exceeding constantly rising consumer expectations.

Ultimately, Mazda designed and engineered a whole new Mazda3 that blends the best of the first-generation with large and small refinements in countless areas. It begins with the bold grille that is purposely polarizing. It is the new ‘face’ of Mazda.

The grille design also helps the new 3 distinguish itself from the new Mazda6. However, the five-sided opening is still instantly recognizable as a strong Mazda design cue. Likewise, the aggressively sculpted front fenders and hood share a clear family resemblance with the Mazda6 and RX-8.

Combining the two-medium-sized grille openings used previously into one larger opening also pays functional dividends. Shifting the air-intake lower on the car increases the pressure of the flow. As a result, the actual grille opening is 20% small than what was necessary with the previous generation Mazda3. Most of the air is routed over the hood or around the sides of the car, yielding a significantly lower drag-coefficient, now rated 0.29 to 0.31. Cars equipped with an automatic transmission have a second driver’s-side inlet opening that routes air through a heat exchanger. The grille and various elements within its periphery are three dimensional so they literally flow into the surrounding surfaces. The Mazda front badge is larger and prominently raised above the front body surface.

The front-to-rear rise of the beltline gives the Mazda3i a crouched, expectant look of an animal ready to pounce, and also provides functional benefits. The low-in-front window opening provides excellent outward visibility. The higher belt-line in the rear seat area gives occupants a greater sense of security, and the elevated decklid surface with the spoiler is both an aerodynamic aid and a means of maximizing trunk room.

The rear is now flat with a vivid LED taillamp execution and dual exhaust pipes in the 3i and 3s models. Wind tunnel testing found that small deflectors located near the front tires and subtle adjustments to the upper-forward corners of the A-pillars, outside mirrors, windshield wipers, and taillamps also helped smooth air flow along the sides of the car. The net gain was a 6% reduction in wind noise. The new 3 is the most aerodynamic of the new breed of compact sport sedans.

On the inside the new Mazda3’s cockpit is configured to support you in a more dedicated manner than any sport-compact competitor. Two large instrument clusters are carefully positioned and clearly marked to deliver engine and road speed information. Key controls are located in the steering wheel spokes where they can be reached with minimum distraction. A new Multi-Information Display screen containing navigation, audio, and trip information is positioned high on the instrument panel to avoid the need for you to refocus vision off the road ahead. A second screen slightly to the right provides station frequency and climate control setting information.

Mazda’s ‘Human Machine Interface’ approach breaks the interior into three key zones: displays and controls used most frequently are located high and close to you to significantly reduce eye motion and refocusing; audio and climate controls are also elevated in the center stack to minimize the amount of head motion needed to change any setting; switches located on the door arm rest, steering column, and steering wheel are designed for intuitive operation so they can often be activated with no need for head or eye motion. Responding to the knowledge gained from human-machine studies, the new Mazda3’s center console was elevated to shorten the reach to the shift lever and parking brake more by two inches. From the pleasant sound of the chimes to the gradual rise of interior illumination, every Mazda3 interior design detail is carefully conceived and executed with high quality in mind. Roof pillars and the beltline are designed to maximize outward visibility and the feeling of roomy openness.

The new instrument cluster panel top is a padded, seamless, and elegantly grained surface that sweeps from the center console to both A-pillars. The center console holds two cupholders, a sliding armrest and a roomy storage box, before blending in a continuous curve into the instrument panel. HVAC and audio controls are large, properly textured and illuminated to provide a visual feedback that a command has been received. A damper is included to smooth the opening and closing of the small compartment built into the instrument panel, the overhead sunglasses storage box and the roomy glove box. Ambient illumination, cruise-control, power windows/door locks, dual map lights, 2-12-volt plugs, illuminated vanity mirrors and three grab handles are standard in all Mazda3’s.

Improved seating comfort is the result of front cushions extended by 0.8 inches for enhanced thigh support. Seatbacks are reshaped for more lumbar support and extended by 1.4 inches for added shoulder support. Optional sport-seat upper bolsters are canted inward more aggressively for added restraint during hard cornering. A segment-first eight-way driver’s seat with memory has been added to the option list. Dual-zone automatic temperature control, heated seats, and a Bose Centerpoint audio system are other new features also not offered by other sport compact competitors. The 5.1-channel surround sound system engineered cooperatively with Bose experts includes digital amplifier, noise cancellation technology and an array of ten premium speakers.

Loaded versions of the Mazda3 have a small-diameter leather wrapped/tilt/telescoping steering wheel and soft-touch surfaces finished with French-stitched seams. Seating areas are available in black or dune colors in both close and leather. All Mazda3 interiors feature a black instrument panel with pewter-painted accents and black carpeting. All models feature a 60-40 split-folding rear seat with pull-down dual cupholders as standard to stretch the utility of the trunk.

The Mazda3’s new Multi-Information Display (MID) is patterned after the compact aftermarket navigational devices that provide guidance at an affordable price. Controls located on the steering wheel select the information to be displayed on the 4.1 inch LCD color screen. In addition to maps and turn-by-turn guidance, the screen conveys MP3 and i-Pod program information, trip data including fuel economy, plus various maintainance and alert messages. A monochromatic readout MID is also without the navigational functions.

Advanced keyless entry allows Mazda3 drivers to unlock the doors and start the engine with the key fob in your pocket or purse. A discrete door handle button and a start/stop button on the dash are used in lieu of a key. The addition of Bluetooth capability in the new Mazda3 provides wireless mobile phone and audio player connections and hands-free operation. Instrument panel and steering wheel switches can be used to sort through music selections.

Steering and braking accuracy and feedback that leads to avoiding collisions is one of the best ways to avoid problems. Towards that end, the Mazda3 excels in agility, maneuverability and ease of control at the limits of braking and cornering adhesion. Powerful disc brakes, ABS, and electro-hydraulic power steering are standard equipment. Dynamic stability control and Traction Control are standard on most models.

The new Mazda 3s the first compacts on the market with an Adaptive Front Lighting system (AFS) containing self-leveling, bi-xenon (high and low beam) headlamps. Standard equipment in the top Grand Touring trim level, the inner beam steers up to 15-degrees into the turn to expand the illumination pattern. To minimize the likelihood of injury when a collision occurs, the Mazda3 uses a technology call Triple-H unibody design. Efficient H-shaped reinforcements in the floor, roof, and side of the body structure resist intrusion and support crush zones at both ends of the car. Six airbags and active head restraints are also standard. Side-curtain airbags, which help protect all outboard occupants, are a fast-inflating design with 40% larger coverage area.

Mazda’s MZR engine family is widely regarded as one of the world’s most advanced forms of fuel-efficient, high-energy propulsion. As before there are two distinct MZR four-cylinder engines available in the Mazda3, both of which offer outstanding performance and efficiency.

Mazda3i models are fitted with the MZR 2.0 liter, DOHC, all-aluminum engine making 148hp at 6,500rpm and 135lb.ft. of torque at 4,500rpm. It is mated to either a standard smooth-shifting manual box or a sophisticated, electronically controlled automatic with a manual-shift mode. Both are fitted with five forward speeds. EPA specs are excellent-25mpg/city and 33mpg/highway.

Mazda3s customers benefit from a healthier injection of Zoom-Zoom attributable to the new 2.5 liters of displacement. This new engine is similar in most details to that found in the all-new 2009 Mazda6i. Changes from the previous 2.3 liter I-4 unit include a fatter bore and a longer stroke packed into a cylinder block with unchanged external dimensions by using cylinder-bore liners made of a steel-molybdenum alloy offering strength and stiffness increases of 30%. A forged-steel crankshaft provides the necessary stamina. Twin balance shafts located in the oil sump cancel second-order noise and vibration, allowing this engine to sing up to its 6,200rpm redlines. The deep skirt block is engineered for extra stiffness and main-bearing caps are integral with a ladder-type lower-block reinforcement. To minimize the noise and vibration typically found on large displacement four-cylinder engines, the damper at the forward end of the crankshaft is equipped with two tuned masses. At the output end, a new flexible flywheel also curbs NVH.

Fuel is delivered to the intake ports by an electronically controlled sequential injection system. Ignition coils are modular units positioned directly above the spark plugs. Shim-less bucket tappets require no maintenance. Light-weight pistons are coated with a special anti-friction compound and fitted with low-tension rings for improved gas mileage. Sintered powder-metal connecting rods and lighter, full-floating wrist pins minimize the reciprocating weight. As a result, this engine hums as contently at 6,000rpm as it does at 2,000rpm. Like the MZR 2.0 liter, the new 2.5 liter power-plant features variable intake valve timing and a two-mode composite intake manifold. A 4-into-1 exhaust manifold improves cylinder scavenging and reduces the time necessary for the catalytic converter to warm to full operating temperature. Dual tailpipes and specially tuned mufflers provide a pleasant exhaust note with a hint of mid-range boom or high-rpm thrash.

Providing 167hp at 6,000rpm and 168lb.ft. of torque at 4,00rpm, the MZR 2.5 liter engine is available with a smooth shifting six-speed manual or a five-speed electronically controlled automatic with manual shift control-again, borrowed from the larger, up-market Mazda6. Despite an increase in power and displacement, fuel efficiency ratings show no loss over the 2009 2.3 liter models, with EPA figures of 21mpg/city and 29mpg/highway with the manual and 22mpg/city and 29mpg/highway with the new automatic.

A uniquely Mazda Active Adaptive Shift protocol provides the new 5-speed automatic with the performance and response that Mazda3 customers expect. Part-throttle downshifts are delivered in sync with the nudge of the accelerator during passing. When the car is braking aggressively in anticipation of cornering, the transmission also downshifts to add engine braking and to prepare for an expedient exit from the curve. A wider overall ratio spread assists acceleration from standstill while also providing quieter and more efficient high cruising. This new engine pulls mightily at launch and through the gears enabling the all-new 3s to race out to 60mph from a standstill in just 7sec.

By refining the strengths of the previous unibody, steering, brakes and suspension systems-instead of starting over with radically different designs-Mazda engineers delivered major improvements in ride and handling performance while also reducing several pounds from the unibody and chassis weight. As before, the new Mazda3 rides on a 103.9in. wheelbase. Wheel track dimensions are also unchanged. A 3in. increase in length yields a lower drag coefficient and additional fuel capacity with the 2.5 liter engine. Unibody bending stiffness has been increased a significant 7% by a major gain in the use of high-tensile-strength steel panels, by adding gussets in heavily loaded areas, such as the suspension mounting points, and by strategic increases in metal gauge thickness. In addition, a technique call weld bonding first used in the new Mazda6 has also been applied to the Mazda3’s unibody construction. At key locations-such as the door aperture areas-the combination of structural adhesion and spot welding greatly enhances the unibody’s flex resistance. A stiffer structure also provides a quieter ride, improved suspension response to steering and cornering loads, and more stable cruising and braking performance. The weight saving is a significant 24lbs.

Changes to the rubber-isolated front, and rigidly mounted rear, subframes also enhance rigidity while saving weight. A new instrument panel support structure using two instead of the previous one steel reinforcement tubes saves 4.4lbs. while providing more solid support for the steering column. Adding ribs to the inner door panels and increasing the size of the roof reinforcements bar yield major reductions in NVH.

To improve steering precision and feel, a third mounting point has been added near the center of the electro-hydraulic-assisted rack & pinion steering gear. The diameter of the rack has been increased from 1.57-to-1.61in. for improved stiffness and to facilitate more precise calibration of the speed-dependent power assistance.

Because the previous car was so effective, suspension changes are modest. The span between front and rear anti-roll bar support points has been widened by nearly 1in. to increase the effectiveness of the bars without raising their weight. Minor changes to the steering geometry and the layout of the multi-link rear suspension diminish understeer during turn-in and oversteer while exiting a curve. Front struts and rear monotube dampers are recalibrated for this new generation to take advantage of the more robust unibody structure and tire specification changes. Its amazing that the all-new 3s rides and handles even better than before. Turn-in is sharp and quick, there is no vibration when handling the steering wheel. The suspension and steering are so well connected that you feel like you are part of the car, so harmonious is the new ride. Engineers have found the ‘sweet spot’ by combining performance and comfort so well.

Power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, electronic brake force distribution and brake assist are standard Mazda3 equipment. Rotor sizes are 10.9in. and 10.4in. in back in the Mazda3i and 11.8in. and 11in. in back in Mazda3s models. These larger rotors work in conjunction with the electronic enhancers to bring the new 3i and s to a shorter, more controlled stop.

As before, 205/55HR16in. all-season radial tires mounted on 6.5in. steel wheels, or available aluminum alloy, are standard Mazda3i equipment. The more powerful Mazda3s models roll on larger 205/50V17in. all-season performance tires wrapped around 17X7in. aluminum alloy wheels. These tires and wheels enhance ride comfort and traction.

New from front to back, from top to bottom, with heavily restyled bodies and updated or all-new powertrains, and a comprehensively revised interior, the 2010 Mazda3 four and 5-door hatchback models are ready to protect their ground in the popular and ever-growing sport compact segment. The new car offers a level of content, style, dynamics and sophistication simply not seen elsewhere in the segment.

It is the best Mazda3 ever, and a sure winner!

To further enhance your cerebral cravings when driving the IS F, iPod/USB connectivity, streaming audio via Bluetooth and an integrated XM satellite radio receiver are added to the standard Lexus Premium Sound system. The optional Lexus Navigation system has been updated with Voice Command casual-language voice recognition and Bluetooth phonebook download capability. The navigation system also comes with XM NavTraffic/Weather/Sports/Stocks, ready and includes a complimentary one-year trial subscription. Lexus Enform, which automatically comes with Safety Connect, is only available with navigation-equipped vehicles. Safety Connect is standard.

The 2010 Lexus IS F has it all, a very powerful high-performance V8 engine connected to the world’ first 8-speed Sport Direct Shift automatic transmission, a high-performance-tuned double-wishbone front, and multi-link rear suspension riding on 19in. light alloy BBS aluminum wheels wrapped with Bridgestone high-performance tires. The IS F beautifully mixes the unique body shape and all of the fine Lexus luxury, convenience, comfort and safety that you expect from any other Lexus vehicle but with a high-performance twist.

The IS F is exclusively powered by a performance-tuned 5.0 liter, all-aluminum, 32-valve, VVT-i V8 engine teamed to an eight-speed Sport Direct Shift transmission. The IS F engine produces 416hp at 6,600rpm and 371lb.ft. of torque at 5,200rpm. The forged crankshaft features journals polished to a mirror finish to minimize the friction generated between the connecting rods and the crankshaft. Forged sintered iron alloy connecting rods ensure high-rpm durability. High-flow cylinder heads designed by Yamaha have a lightweight valvetrain, including forged cam lobs on hollow, chain-driven camshafts, with the inside of the shafts serving as oil passages. Titanium intake valve are operated by roller rocker arms.

Several innovative technologies help to maximize efficiency and reduce emissions, including the SFT-D-4 fuel injection system (direct-to-cylinder injection system with secondary port injectors) and the electronic throttle control system with intelligence (ETCS-i).

Essentially, SFT D-4 integrates two types of fuel injection: a direct-type high-pressure fuel injection system, which provides a cooling effect in the cylinders and enables the high compression ratio (11.8:1) employed to extract maximum energy from the fuel; a set of low-pressure port fuel injectors that help produce a precise burn to optimize power and efficiency under light-and medium-load conditions. A dual air-intake system uses a primary intake passage for low and medium engine speeds. In the higher engine speed range (above 3,600rpm), both the primary and secondary passages are opened, helping boost high-rpm power.

With the IS F 5.0 liter V8, Lexus made a leap in valve-control technology with the Variable Valve Timing intelligence and Electronically controlled intake cam (VVT-iE).

An electric drive motor alters the intake camshaft phasing, which made it possible to expand the VVT operational range to lower engine speeds, where engine oil pressure is usually not high enough to operate VVT. The exhaust camshaft uses hydraulically controlled variable valve timing. A scavenge pump forces oil from the cylinder heads back to the oil pan, ensuring a reliable oil supply even during cornering that exceeds 1-g. The low-restriction dual-exhaust system terminates in distinctive stacked quad diffusers. What this all means is that you will have almost all of the torque from 2,000rpm up to redline, tremendous low end power at your disposal when you want or need it.

The world’s first eight-speed Sport Direct-Shift automatic transmission combines the performance characteristics of an automated manual-type transmission with the smoothness and refinement of a planetary-type automatic transmission. As a result you can choose between ultra-quick manual shifts for performance driving and smooth automatic shifts when convenience is the top priority. The eight speeds allow gear ratios that maximize torque up to the tire-grip limitations in the lower range while optimizing efficiency. Intuitive powertrain control optimally smoothes out off-the-line response. Artificial Intelligence-SHIFT complements the Sport switch selection by automatically adapting the shifting based on road conditions and your input. The IS F transmission is also highly responsive to uphill/downhill driving, always selecting the best gear for power or engine braking. You can shift manually either from the console shift or steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. New hydraulic-control technology allows the

IS F’s eight-speed Sport Direct Shift transmission to perform on par with manual transmissions without sacrificing the smoothness of a torque-converter automatic. Paddle-shifting operation is allowed in either D or M modes, but shifts are quicker and more direct in M mode. In M mode, the transmission will hold each gear up to 6,000rpm, and upshifts are executed in just one-tenth of a second. At higher engine speeds, downshifts are accompanied by automated and precise throttle blips to match engine rpm to vehicle speed.

Pure excitement and pleasure is yours when you work the eight-speed using the paddle shifters. The reaction time is super quick and the matching revs when downshifting is amazing. Your heart will race and your sweat will soon bead up on your forehead as you put the IS F through its paces on the open road or around curving roads. On the track 0-60mph comes in just above 4sec.

Matching the high-performance V8 engine and transmission is a stiff and sturdy chassis, a race-tuned suspension, big brakes and sticky high-performance tires.

The IS F is based on the robust IS platform, which was engineered from the start to allow a high dynamic envelope. The stiff body structure and the rear subframe are connected through several reinforcements. Much of the IS F development took place at racetracks around the world including Germany’s famed Nurburgring Nordschleife, Circuit Paul Recard in France, Japan’s Fuji Speedway and the Higashi-Fuji Technical Center in Japan.

Fuji Speedway is the IS F’s home circuit and the shape of its turn one inspired the F-logo design.

The IS F uses the IS basic double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear setup but it features a multitude of track-proven modifications. The IS F sits an inch lower on its suspension than the standard IS models, which lowers the center of gravity and enhances handling response.

Spring and damper rates are increased, and larger-diameter stabilizer bars are used. The rear setup’s control arms are specific to the IS F to optimize geometry for the 19in. wheels. In addition, the monotube shock absorbers use a larger-diameter piston rod. As on other IS models, the sophisticated shock-absorber design utilizes multi-leaf linear control valves to help improve damping force, and rebound springs offer improved body control with degrading the ride comfort.

Also, subframe suspension mounts are stiffer than on other IS models to help reduce sway and ensure control under acceleration and braking. The engine mounts are also stiffer for a more direct feel. Special jounce stoppers on both the front and rear suspensions come into play early in the compression stroke to help reduce the sway angle when cornering and to reduce dive when braking. The electric power steering (EPS) system has been remapped for improved steering response and feel while providing precise control and excellent straight-line control. It feels like you are sitting in a racecar because the reaction to your steering input, throttle input are so quick and precise. Just a little tug on the wheel moves your direction. In the Sport mode, the IS F quickly makes work of the steep curves up, down, and around the treacherous mountain roads.

Further increasing the IS F’s handling ability are big, lightweight BBS wheels wrapped with high-performing tires. The front wheels are 19X8in. and are wrapped with 225/40R19in. while the rear wheels measure 19X9in. and are wrapped with 255/35R19in. Bridgestone Pontenza tires developed specifically for the 170mph track capability of the IS F. High- rigidity hub unit bearings are engineered for rigorous, high g-force track driving.

The direct-type tire pressure monitoring system allows two sets of tires to be registered, giving you the benefit of a system with a set of track tires and winter tires. The multi-information display indicates the tire selector switch.

The ride is never harsh, just firm, with the shocks working nicely taking the bumps out of poorly paved roads that you might travel over on your journeys.

A specially calibrated version of Lexus’ innovative Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system helps provide superior handling dynamics and traction control. Combining input from a variety of sensors, VDIM is designed to anticipate the onset of a vehicle skid or slide and help correct the situation with a combination of braking, steering and throttle control in a way that is essentially transparent to you. VDIM integration provides precise management for EPS, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), traction control (TRAC), the ABS system, Brake Assist (BA), Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and engine torque (via the electronically controlled throttle).

VDIM also provides an electronically controlled brake-based limited slip differential effect on the rear wheels. During cornering, VDIM suppresses any tendency for the inside wheel to spin, transmitting more power to the outside wheel to help maintain traction and momentum. When braking on a mixed-friction surface, VDIM will direct steering assist in the direction that will help provide the greatest control.

Using a dashboard-mounted switch, you can select Normal, Sport or Snow driving modes. In Sport mode, VDIM allows high dynamic thresholds before intervening and alters steering assist to increase steering feel. Sport mode helps provide excellent optimal vehicle control on a track in areas where the skills of even top-level drivers are challenged. You can of course disengage VSC/TRAC by pressing and holding the TRAC-off button for more than three seconds. Even with VSC/TRAC off, the system still provides the brake-based limited-slip differential and ABS as before, but the new 2010 IS F now comes standard with a Torsen rear differential that will help provide additional traction during spirited driving.

Quickly and safely slowing you down from speed are big, Brembo brakes that were designed to the specifications of the Lexus engineering team. The 14.2in. vented, drilled front rotors are gripped by rigid and powerful six-piston aluminum calipers, while the 13.6in. vented and drilled rear rotors use two-piston calipers. Front bumper ducts adjacent to the foglamps stream cooling air directly to each front rotor. The brakes are finished with the Lexus name displayed on the calipers.

The interior is as luxurious as any Lexus but the IS F also features racecar cues to differentiate it from Lexus models. The interior features specially shaped leather trimmed racecar-styled 10-way powered, high-backed front bucket seats with extra side bolstering to keep you in place during hard cornering, and carbon fiber pattern trim on the door switch plates and center console. The aluminum-trimmed main gauges, unique steering wheel treatment and other special surface treatments are standard. The instrument cluster integrates an oil temperature gauge, voltmeter and shift indicator lights, and the ‘F’ logo is discretely showcased on the lower steering wheel, rear pull-down center console and outer seats cushions. You’ll also appreciate the aluminum-faced foot pedals and chrome/leather stick shifter, as you work the engine and transmission.

A multi-information display located within the speedometer integrates a trip computer that provides outside temperature, driving range, average fuel consumption, etc. The display also includes an oil-maintainance reminder and system warning lights.

Also coming standard inside is SmartAccess keyless entry and push-button start/stop. Standard amenities not mentioned above include dual-zone automatic climate control, a pollen filter and smog detector, power moonroof with one-touch open/close, power tilt/telescoping leather wrapped sporty steering wheel, three-position memory for front seats, steering wheel and mirrors, all power windows with automatic up/down operation, dual map lamps, dual vanity mirrors with lights, thick cut pile carpeting with floor mats, center console with dual cupholders and storage bin, cruise-control, HID headlamps, an auto-dimming reaview mirror, automated rain-sensing wipers and heated auto-dimming outside mirrors with integrated puddle lamps.

The standard Lexus Premium Audio system features a six-disc, in-dash CD changer, 13-speakers and an integrated XM satellite radio receiver. Automatic sound leveler maintains consistent sound levels in response to varying outside noise levels. Convenient USB-and mini-jacks in the center console enables connection of an iPod or other portable music players.

Like all Lexus models, the IS F offers a Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound audio system with 14-speakers, a discrete 5.1 multi-channel playback with 7.1-channel speaker architecture, 300-watts of power, and can play CD’s, DVD’s plus MP3/WMA-formatted CD’s. DVD movies can be viewed on the navigation system’s 7in. color screen when the parking brake is engaged.

Based on the IS sport sedan, the IS F is clearly differentiated when viewed from the front, side and the rear. A trapezoid-shaped front bumper fascia, a theme that is repeated at the rear, sets off the V-shaped grille. The hood’s raised center section makes room for the V8 engine, and the front fenders were widened to envelop the 19in. low-profile tires. Total grille area is increased to ensure adequate cooling for the 5.0 liter V8, and both upper and lower grilles feature a special wire-mesh pattern. The lower grille is flanked by large brake cooling ducts adjacent to standard foglamps. The front fenders wear a discrete silver, black and blue ‘F’ marque. The car’s wedge-like profile is accentuated by functional front fender air outlets with lower edges that transition into larger rocker panels and continue as a character line into the rear bumper. The rear view conveys a strong parting signature for the IS F, with dramatic trapezoid shape and easily recognizable design elements. Four vertically stacked exhaust diffusers, two per side, are integrated into the rear bumper. Above them, LED stop and tail behind clear lenses give the IS F a unique nighttime appearance. The subtle rear spoiler is one of the many aerodynamic enhancements, which also include special underbody panels to optimize airflow. Contributing to both design and performance, new 19in. forged-alloy wheels by BBS feature a dark-gray finish and an asymmetrical 10-spoke design.

The new IS F offers an all-new telematics system, Lexus Enform with Safety Connect.

Safety Connect, the cornerstone of the services, is available on both non-navigation and navigation-equipped IS F and offers four safety and security features: automatic collision notification, stolen vehicle location, emergency assistance button and enhanced roadside assistance, which adds GPS data to the already included warranty-based Lexus roadside service.

Lexus Enform, available only on navigation-equipped vehicles, includes all of the Safety Connect features and builds upon them with the premium services of Destination Assist and eDestination. Destination Assist agents are available via the on-board cellular equipment and can help you find a specific address, a business by name, or a type of business, and even Zagat rated restaurants, and then send the coordinates to the navigation system for routing.

Standard safety systems to keep you and your passengers safe in the event of a collision start with Lexus Passive-safety technology that includes a reinforced passenger compartment that helps protects the occupants with front and rear crush structures. Seatbelt pretensioners and force limiters are used in all four seating positions. In addition to advanced dual-stage front airbags and front-seat-mounted side airbags, the Lexus Supplemental Restraint System includes side-curtain airbags that extend from the A-pillar to C-pillar, plus knee airbags for the driver and front passenger.

The optional Pre-Collision System can help reduce collision damage. The package includes Dynamic Radar Cruise Control that detects obstacles in front of the car. The rear backup camera, included with the navigation system, automatically projects an image of what its lens can detect behind the car onto the navigation screen when the transmission is in reverse. The optional Intuitive Park Assist system uses ultrasonic sensors to detect objects close to the car’s front and rear bumpers, alerting you and showing the distance to objects in the multi-information display within the speedometer.

The new 2010 Lexus IS F is an excellent high-performing luxury sedan along the lines of the BMW M3 and Audi S4 sedans in terms of overall performance and interior comfort, luxury and safety while saving the consumer thousands of dollars when making the decision to go with the IS F. Prices start at $57,760.00.

The all-new 2010 Lexus HS250h hybrid will keep more of your money in your pockets as you pass gas stations, and will also have you seated in a Lexus with all of the luxury, convenience and safety that you expect from a Lexus. The Lexus HS250h is the first luxury hybrid to achieve an EPA Estimated Rating of 35mpg combined and is the first luxury car to come standard with a supplemental restraint system with 10 airbags.

Hybrid efficiency is at the core of the new HS250h and Lexus’s first four-cylinder gas engine and latest hybrid system take advantage of the company’s continuous engineering advances to maximize fuel economy, minimize emissions and deliver driving pleasure.

A highly efficient engine design, an exhaust heat recovery system, major efforts to reduce parasitic losses, a new evaporative emissions system and driver-selectable driving modes all make notable contributions. Significant efforts were also made to minimize engine noise.

An Atkinsion-cycle engine design was chosen for its high efficiency and compatibility with hybrid operation in the new HS. The twin-cam engine uses four-valves per cylinder and Variable Valve Time with Intelligence on the intake side. The engine is undersquare, with an 88.5mm bore diameter and 96mm stroke, and has a relatively high compression ratio of 12.5:1. Peak output equals 147hp and in combination with the hybrid drive motor, the HS generates 187 total system horsepower. That is the most of any other dedicated hybrid motor.

Careful design of the intake system reduces engine pumping losses and its twin resonators minimize intake noise. The cooling system uses a modular construction that combines an aluminum engine radiator, hybrid system radiator, AC condenser and fan into a single assembly for minimal weight. Plus, the electric fan speed is controlled via Pulse Width Modulation to reduce energy consumption and noise. Careful ducting of the cooling system helps prevent hot engine air recirculation that tends to occur at low speeds and while idling, further enhancing efficiency.

One of the keys to lower fuel consumption involves heat. Similar to the Lexus RX450h luxury SUV, the HS employs an Exhaust Heat Recovery system that captures the heat of spent exhaust gases to speed engine coolant warm-up and allow the hybrid system to stop the engine earlier, and more often in the driving cycle when it’s not needed, for example in lower power demand conditions in city driving. Overall, the system can improve fuel efficiency by as much as 7% in low ambient temperatures.

Using a two-motor hybrid system, the new HS uses a 141hp drive motor that combined with the 147hp gas engine. A second motor in the hybrid system serves as both engine starter and generator to charge the hybrid battery pack.

The efficient two-motor system also uses an electronically-controlled continuously variable transmission (CVT) that is a model of efficiency, simplicity and compact size with extremely smooth and quiet operation. A motor speed reduction planetary gear unit helps provide high power output in this small package. The HS also uses an easy-to-operate shift-by-wire system that eliminates the need for bulky shift cables, saving space and weight while allowing much more design freedom in placing the shift lever in the interior. An electric transmission oil pump eliminates another source of parasitic loss to further increase efficiency. Electronic operation allows a control strategy that invokes the oil pump only when needed, and since the oil also flows over the drive motor, overall efficiency of the motor and transmission are improved. I was truly impressed with the smooth and quiet operation of the motor and CVT.

The HS also incorporates a drive-mode switch that allows you to select between four modes: Normal, Power Eco and EV. Each switch position changes the rate of throttle opening for a given throttle-pedal angle. Normal mode has an essentially linear throttle response that gives naturally progressive power. Power mode can be selected for a more responsive feel when desired, such as when merging onto fast moving freeways or when you want to quickly maneuver around slow city traffic. In Eco mode, AC settings are adjusted and the throttle response is reduced relative to the pedal angle to emphasize fuel economy, such as when you are in rush hour traffic or on short trips around town with little traffic. Under certain circumstances, the EV mode can allow the vehicle to be driven short distances using only the electric motors. Acceleration from 0-60mph was surprisingly quick at 8.4sec. Responsive passing acceleration benefits from the instant torque of the electric motor and the CVT’s ability to quickly find the optimal gear ratio to enhance your driving experience.

The HS250h body design received considerable attention to aerodynamics. Ambitious goals were set requiring designers to work closely with aerodynamics from the outset to create a low-drag form in an attractive, spacious, yet compact package. Their work yielded a coefficient of drag of 0.27, among the best, enhancing fuel economy at highway speeds.

The low nose encourages airflow while also helping enhance vehicle dynamics. Smooth transitions along the front fender and A-pillar avoid disturbance of the airflow. Subtle front-and-rear bumper spoilers and an available rear-lip spoiler contribute to low drag and minimize lift. The body sides taper from the center pillar to the rear where they meet the slightly kicked-out tail lamps, helping reduce drag-inducing wake turbulence. Also, a gull wing-shaped roof panel enabled designers to lower its profile to reduce air resistance and with a shape that is naturally stiffer than a conventional curved roof, engineers were able to reduce its thickness for further weight reduction. These improvements also lessen noise as the HS cuts through the air at speed.

Several measures were also taken under the car to promote airflow and reduce drag. Airflow resistance in the engine compartment was improved by optimizing the duct profiles around the radiator. Careful positioning of numerous underfloor covers plus added diffuser fins on the rear covers further reduce drag while enhancing straight-line control.

Underlying the HS250h’s forward-think interior design is the implementation of bioplastic material. Known more formally as Ecological Plastic, the bioplastic uses plant sources as raw material and is used for parts of the interior upholstery in the car. Ecological Plastics are used in a number of injection-molded, foam and board components throughout the car, including trunk compartment trim, cowl side trim, door scuff plates, seat cushions and package tray. Overall, approximately 30% of the combined interior and trunk are covered in Ecological Plastic.

From the driver’s perspective, several important developments inside the HS250h transform the driving experience, making it easier and more enjoyable while also helping to enhance the driver’s attention to the road ahead.

The standard Lexus Premium Audio system offers a comprehensive suite that includes voice recognition, Bluetooth technology, an integrated satellite radio receiver, and USB/iPod connectivity operated via steering wheel controls or from the display screen.

A multi-informational display situated in the instrument cluster keeps you informed of the numerous actions controlled by the steering wheel-mounted switches.

The car’s next-generation navigation system is optional and features Lexus’s exclusive Remote Touch controller with user-adjustable haptic feedback. The innovative controller, similar to a computer mouse, eliminates the need for touch screen controls, allowing the pop-up navigation system to be mounted further up the center stack and away from the driver. The driver benefits with a clear, high-resolution screen, improved site lines and reduced eye movement. These advances combined with the physical feedback provided by the controller make the system extremely easy to use. Just point and click.

Voice command, a casual-language-based voice recognition feature, is standard on navigation-equipped vehicles. This new technology allows you to give fewer and more flexible, conversational commands in a specific order for easier access to audio, climate, and navigation system functions to help you focus more on the road ahead.

Another driver-inspired development is an optional Heads-Up Display (HUD). This system projects a miniature display on a small portion of the windshield in front of you, significantly reducing eye movement to see frequently viewed information such as vehicle speed. The display has been developed for maximum visibility, with crisp, high-contrast white lighting that makes it possible to see even in difficult lighting conditions such as driving on snow-covered roads. In addition to speed, the system also displays turn-by-turn navigation arrows and driver-assist warnings, as well as audio information and Touch Tracer (sensors on steering-wheel switches will show an image of switch layout in the HUD) both of which can be turned off separately from the rest of the display.

The high-visibility, electro-luminescent instrument cluster offers new ideas of keeping track of the various systems in the car and helps the driver to conserve fuel. A hybrid system indicator displays the hybrid system output and regenerative charging status, simultaneously indicating the efficiency of the system related to your driving style. An auxiliary Eco Drive Indicator light further assists you in maintaining the most economical use of system power.

The multi-information display resides in the center of the hybrid system indicator. It uses high-contrast organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology for maximum visibility and indicates various conditions such as fuel consumption, ambient temperature and cruising range. Also, several vehicle functions can be customized through use of the display with the multi-information switch.

Like most Lexus vehicles the HS250h has an optional navigation system equipped with a back-up monitor. In addition, the new HS250h offers an available Wide-view Front Monitor to help enhance your ability to see in the traditionally blind areas around the front of the car. The front grille-mounted camera has a maximum 190-degree lateral field of view and allows you to see as close as 24in. in front of the car within an 83-degree vertical field of view. Images from the two monitors feed into the available park assist ECU which processes and sends them to the navigation system display at separate times depending on whether the vehicle is moving forward or backward. The front monitor operates in either of two modes. Normal mode allows you to manually operate the camera with a switch on the lower left of the dashboard area. In auto mode, images from the front monitor automatically displays when the vehicle slows to about 6mph or less and automatically shuts off when speed rises above 7.5mph. You can also toggle from the front monitor on or off while in the auto mode. To other items related to visibility of your surroundings when driving is the slim A-pillar structure that helps improve visibility when pulling out of a parking space, inside or outside. HS250h engineers were able to create a relatively slim A-pillar structure to help improve visibility without degrading the structural integrity. Also, the HS250h uses side glass with a water-repellant coating that improves wet weather visibility and aids defrosting performance.

As it is with ride, handling, noise and vibration, the body structure plays a key role in the fundamental safety characteristics of the new HS250h. To help protect you and your passengers, the body is designed to be strong but strategically resilient to help absorb and distribute energy in the event of a crash. High tension steel components are carefully located in the body structure, doors, and other areas to help ensure strength in key areas.

All HS250h hybrids come with a class-leading 10-airbags with dual-stage and knee airbags up front, side curtain airbags and both front and rear seat-mounted side airbags to help protect front and rear passengers in certain types of severe frontal and side collisions. The front passenger is equipped with a twin-chamber airbag that further helps provide occupant protection. Additionally, front and outer rear seatbelts incorporate pretentioners with force-limiters to help further protect occupants in certain collisions. Active front head restraints are also standard.

An optional Pre-Collision system (PCS) with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and Driver Monitor uses millimeter-wave radar to measure and maintain a pre-set following distance from a vehicle traveling ahead. The radar sensor is designed to detect certain obstacles in front of the car, and a PCS computer with vehicle speed, steering angle and yaw-rate inputs, helps to determine whether a collision is highly possible. In such a situation, PCS alerts you with an audible and visual warnings, preemptively retracts front seatbelts and pre-initializes Brake Assist (BA) so that increased braking will be applied the instant you depress the brake pedal. All of these safety systems only enhance the driving pleasure and enjoyment, never getting in the way of your regular or current driving style.

The interior of the HS250hp was designed to communicate the high level of innovation inherent in the car with the craftsmanship expected from Lexus products. Lexus’s exclusive Remote Touch navigation system controller is a focal point of the interior design because of the many times that you will be using it. As a real Lexus luxury car, the HS250h is comfortable with plenty of room for five people; as such the designers were intent on creating a fresh, appealing design befitting the brand that is also hybrid-distinct.

Comfortable, supportive, 10-way power adjustable leather trimmed seats are standard (8-way power-adjustable front passenger seat), and special soft touch stitched details on the center stack and instrument hood provide an extra premium touch in the cabin. There are two levels of the new HS250h, standard and premium. Interior trim color include black leather, new light gray leather, parchment leather, and for the optional touring package, a distinctive black/light gray two-tone leather trim. A high-finish dark gray trim is featured on the standard model while the premium model has brown walnut wood trim. Front door trims also mimics the shape of the center stack and armrest providing a comfortable symmetry. The steering wheel center pad appears to float on the wheel, surround by control switches that also mimic the design and color of those on the center stack. The sporty leather-wrapped steering wheel also feature powered tilt/telescoping adjustments for the perfect placement in you hands.

Comfort, quietness and convenience are a hallmark of all Lexus interiors so the HS250h comes with a host of each. When more than one driver uses the HS250h, an available new memory system allows individual driver settings to be recalled automatically by individual keys. There are three keys and each set the steering wheel position, seat position, exterior mirror positions and AC settings. The leather front bucket seats with the premium model get heated and ventilated seats that are trimmed with semi-aniline leather.

Climate control in the HS250h is designed to provide comfort and clean air for all passengers. A dual temperature control system is used for front occupants and a dedicated rear blower is mounted in the center console promoting quick cool down in the rear. A plasma cluster ion generator, A/C clean air filter and a pollen removal mode help clean air inside the cabin. The interior gets a little extra help from the windshield, which has infrared-ray reduction properties that help keep the interior cool, allowing a smaller size A/C system than would be required. A 10-speaker, 137-watt Lexus Premium audio system features a six-disc CD changer, a subwoofer and center speaker standard. The system uses two-way woofer and tweeter systems in both front and rear for rich, clear sound quality. Real audiophiles will appreciate the optional Mark Levinson 5.1 channel Premium Surround Sound system that features 330-watts at only 0.1% total harmonic distortion and the system uses 15-strategically placed speakers for outstanding audio performance and sound quality. I loved the sounds coming from the speakers; it is one of the best factory installed systems.

Nimble handling, excellent body control, smooth ride and low noise in the HS250h are the best of any dedicated hybrid vehicle that I have tested, and they begin with a stiff body structure. The HS body is designed with superior stiffness overall with added focus in strategically-located areas that have the greatest effect on ride, handling and noise.

Designed to balance handling, ride and NVH at high levels, the HS uses a rigid and compact MacPherson strut front suspension. The setup employs a 24mm stabilizer bar plus large diameter pistons and rebound springs in the shock absorbers to help provide superior ride control at high speeds or when driving on curving roads getting off a freeway or in the mountains. The steering rack is directly mounted (no rubber bushings) to create an unfiltered connection between it and the suspension members to help accurately communicate what is happening where the rubber meets the pavement. Both setups reacted quickly to my inputs and I was surprised how easy it was to slice through the curving roads in the mountains.

The double-wishbone rear suspension also balances performance and comfort and is important to its overall handling. Its compact design uses low-mount coil springs that also help improve cargo space. As in the front suspension, rebound springs are used to aid both handling and ride, and all mountings and bushings are optimized to help provide an excellent combination of ride, handling and low noise. I was amazed how well the HS250h handled during my test drive. Unlike other dedicated hybrids, I looked forward to driving the car as much as I could.

The new HS rides on standard 17X7in. alloy wheels and are wrapped with 215/55R17in. all-season tires. The premium model comes with 18X8in. alloy wheels wrapped with larger 225/45R18in. all-season tires. All wheels feature the direct-type Tire Pressure Monitoring System.

Getting back to the fun and pleasure of driving the new HS250h is the improvement in the electric power steering (EPS) system. The vehicle-speed sensitive steering has been optimized to provide you with the ideal steering feel at any speed. Inertia compensation control, friction feedback and recovery control assist in tailoring the steering feel and effort that is most effective for a majority of drivers. I thought that the feedback and on center feel were superb.

Like all Lexus vehicles, the new HS250h braking system is comprehensive, and as a Lexus hybrid it is augmented by regenerative braking which also helps recharge the hybrid battery pack and improve fuel economy. The HS uses a newly developed electronic controlled brake (ECB) system actuator that is managed by the ECB computer and acts on the system’s hydraulic brake components. The ECB computer also controls the interaction between the for-wheel disc friction brakes and the regenerative brake system. The new ECB actuator is smaller, lighter and consumes less electrical current than previous systems, making additional contributions to fuel economy. Enhancements in the system design also help improve brake feel and controllability. To my foot the feeling was always linear and always direct reacting to the force I applied.

The HS features 10.8in. vented discs up front and 11.1in. solid discs in the rear. Braking control is enhanced with standard ABS and Brake Assist. Further enhancing of your control during braking is standard all-speed traction control and electronic stability control to help you maintain your desired direction under severe braking maneuvers over slick pavement.

Standard features not mentioned above include: vehicle theft-deterrent system, courtesy lights mounted on the doors, illuminated glove box, front dual cupholders, rear seat center pull-down armrest with dual cupholders, front map lights/rear cargo light, LED foot lights, two-12-volt power outlets, programmable garage door opener, manual front seatbelt adjustment, power windows/door locks with all express up/down and anti-lock-out, four grab handles, dual sliding/illuminated sun visors, electric fuel door and trunk releases, center console with storage bin and dual cupholders, front/rear door cupholders can hold 20oz. water bottles, tool kit, first aid kit, coat hooks, cut pile carpeting, carpeted floor mats, five separate manually adjustable headrests, scheduled maintainance indicator light, exclusive chrome-accented hybrid front grille design, blue highlights added to front and rear ‘L’ logo, engine cover, headlamp, rear combination lamps clusters, LED brake and tail lights, color keyed lower front and rear spoilers to improve fuel economy, turn signal lamps integrated into side mirrors, puddle lamps integrated into the side mirrors, moonroof, aluminum hood, sound insulation placed in door panels, instrument panel and floor mats, SmartAccess key system for entry and push buttons start/stop, variable intermittent wipers, self-dimming inside mirror with compass, auto on/off headlamps, heated outside mirrors, foglamps. The Premium model gets above and rain-sensing wipers.

The all-new 2010 Lexus HS250h is on the cutting edge of hybrid energy driven automobiles and is injected with the Lexus knowhow of quality, workmanship, and engineering. It is the first ‘purpose’ built luxury hybrid and is perfect for the family that is used to the finer things in life that want to keep their driving ‘footprint’ as small as possible.

Prices start at just $34,650.00 for the standard model and up to $37,420.00 for the premium model. The new HS250h is another ‘industry first’ for Lexus.

The Infiniti M45 Sport is Infiniti’s ‘flagship’ model, highlighting the best from the luxury division of Nissan-quality, high-performance engineering, luxury accoutrements, and advanced electronics. Now is its fifth year of its second-generation design, the Infiniti M45 S sedan offers all the expected, plus innovative technology, and, most importantly, a powerful, athletic presence designed to excite the senses.

The Infiniti M is a mid-size premium sedan with an emphasis on performance, user-focused technology and a selection of engine, driveline and equipment choices all designed to meet the customers’ needs, budgets and desires. The Infiniti M offers a spacious cabin wrapped in a sporty and luxurious exterior design along with an exhilarating driving experience.

The 2010 Infiniti M is offered in M35 and M45 models, each available in rear-wheel drive or with Infiniti’s advanced Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system. The Infiniti M45 and M45x AWD feature a 325hp/336lb.ft. of torque, 4.5 liter DOHC VVT V8, while the M35 and M35x AWD come equipped with a 303hp/262lb.ft. of torque, 3.5 liter DOHC VVT V6. A special Sport Package (rear-wheel drive only) adds a higher level of sporty performance and style with an advanced Rear Active Steer System, a sport-tuned suspension, 19X9in. wheels, and other unique items I’ll get into later in this review.

The 2010 M remains a showcase of Infiniti’s advanced technology, including Intelligent Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Lane Departure Prevention (LDP) systems, an advanced Infiniti Hard Drive Navigation System with touch screen, 9.3GB Music Box hard drive for digital music storage and playback, and available XM NavTraffic.

The overall exterior design is unique and features both performance cues and elegance.

The grille features wide arched horizontal chrome slats to let lots of air into the engine bay and a prominent Infiniti logo near the top. Down below on the lower bumper is another intake to further enhance engine cooling. The low portion is curved down provide downforce for the front end and increasing front end stability. The uniquely formed headlamp cluster features HID adaptive lighting. Powerful, round fog lamps at the ends of the lower bumper have a mesh opening to direct airflow towards the front brakes keeping them cool to enhance braking force. Large 19X9in. aluminum alloy wheels wrapped with low profile Bridgestone Potenza performance tires nicely stuff the fender wells. From the side the M45S profile features a low, aggressive hood line that flows into the anchored shoulders and fluid roofline. The deeper side sills and stable, wide track posture creates a dynamic visual appeal to any enthusiast and lowers the center of gravity for even better stability.

Each door features a strip of chrome running the length of each door and a chrome strip surrounding the greenhouse glass to adding to the exterior elegance.

The M45S also comes with unique front and rear bumpers and highlighted in the rear with two dual exhaust tips and a center diffuser to help better manage the underside airflow for enhanced stability. The M45S’s long wheelbase and short overhangs provide a roomy interior and sporty exterior dimensions. Wide front and rear tracks not only improve handling but also enhance interior and trunk volume. The stiff and torsional, corrosion resistant and high strength steel unibody frame features aluminum alloy hood, deck lid and door structures to decrease total weight.

Inside, the intuitive design engages all of your senses in invigorating ways, combining a driver-oriented cockpit with a graceful, Infiniti level of luxury and design detail. You are surrounded with the finest leathers, aluminum and chrome trim pieces, chrome rings surrounding the door pulls and steering wheel spokes, aluminum plates on the dashboard and doors for the Sport model and dark African Rosewood for the regular M45 models. Visibility all around is excellent and the ‘Fine Vision’ electroluminescent gauges feature ‘gear-like’ rings around the 160mph speedometer and 8,000rpm tachometer for a mechanical look. Other interior highlights include the easy to use and understand unique center stack that flows into the center console with an aluminum shift gate housing a stubby, soft leather stick that feels great when operating.

Also feeling perfect in your hands is the power tilting/telescoping, leather-wrapped sporty steering wheel. Dual cupholders follow into the center armrest with dual-adjustable armrests, dual level storage and a 12-volt power outlet. The 12-power adjustable front bucket seats are comfortable and supportive. The Sport model receives extra side bolstering to keep you firmly in place during high-speed cornering that comes naturally to the M45S. Standard interior features also include cruise control with steering wheel switches, dual zone automatic climate control with micro filter and rear air vents and for the first time a front passenger seat control to direct air for your feet, your chest or both, just like the mode switch for the driver-side. A 7in. color LCD screen gives vehicle information/driver information readouts, grab handles above each door, Infiniti analog clock, one-touch auto-up/down windows, front seat entry/exit assist with cancellation capability, remote trunk release, rain-sensing windshield wipers, power door locks, remote keyless entry, illuminated entry/exit, locking glovebox, dual illuminated vanity mirrors, front door map pockets, dual map lamps, outside temperature readout, self-dimming reaview mirror, heated/remote control side mirrors, green-tinted windshield, chrome-grip pull-out door handles, two driver memory for the front seat, outside mirrors, steering column and radio station presets, sunglass holder, rear armrest with dual cupholders and storage, fully carpeted trunk with cargo net, thick cut-pile carpeting with front/rear floor mats, rear window defroster/timer, power sliding sunroof, rear power sunshade, retained accessory power, Infiniti Intelligent Key with push button start/stop and Infiniti Voice Recognition System which controls audio, vehicle information system, climate control, optional navigation system and Bluetooth phone.

The Sport model also receives aluminum-trimmed foot pedals, unique steering wheel and shift knob stitching, and unique front seat designs with Infiniti stitched on each seatback.

Options inside include heated/reclining rear seats, rear entertainment DVD system, an incredible sounding, advanced Bose Studio Surround sound system with digital 5.1-channel decoding and 14-speakers including two personal speakers mounted in the shoulders of each front seat. Also offered is an Infiniti Hard Drive Navigation system with touch-screen, 9.3GB Music Box Hard Drive for digital music storage and playback, and available XM NavTraffic with real-time traffic information. Enhancing safety is an optional RearView TV monitor and Intelligent Cruise Control.

I found the cabin to be sporty oriented, comfortable, easy to operate and luxurious, all at the same time, not an easy trick to accomplish and when driving at high triple-digit speeds or when challenging steep curving roads. That is what makes the M45S so special to drive.

Under the skin of the smartly designed M45S are a high-performance V8 engine, world-class suspension and powerful brakes. The powerful V8 engine features titanium valves, modular cylinder heads, microfinished crankshaft, lightweight pistons and super-silent single stage cam drive chain to help optimize performance. In addition, the V8 is outfitted with a variable length air induction system and continuously variable valve timing control to enhance the engine’s power delivery and operation efficiency. Just push your foot on the throttle and you’re quickly on your way. Infiniti says that the M45S will accelerate to 60mph from a standstill in just about 5.3sec.

This high-output V8 engine is hooked up to an advanced 5-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode, downshift rev matching and a new ‘drive sport’ mode that provides better acceleration feel and a more sporting driving experience. That driving experience is truly dynamic with exhilarating and exciting chills running up your back with the car’s quick acceleration and precise handling thanks to the unique, fully independent suspension system. The racecar derived double-wishbone setup up front includes sport-tuned coil springs, gas-charged shocks and a stabilizer bar. The multi-link setup in the rear includes sport-tuned coil springs, gas-charged shocks and stabilizer bar.

Joined up to a electronically-controlled vehicle-speed-sensing variable-assist power rack & pinion steering system with a performance gear, you quickly, precisely and effortlessly steer deep into corners aided with the Infiniti Rear Active Steer system, which uses precise, electronic motor-driven controls to turn the rear wheels. It is the only one available on a luxury sport sedan. The system helps improve the M45S’s handling performance by adjusting the geometry of the rear suspension according to steering input and vehicle speed. The system’s electronic control unit calculates the desired vehicle dynamics from a series of sensors, including vehicle speed and steering angle, and directs the system actuator to change the rear geometry by moving both rear suspension lower links. The result is a nimble steering response combined with luxury sedan stability and ride quality. You can feel not only the front end ‘bite’ when turning in, but also the rear gives the same feeling in steep curves at high speeds. I could shake the rear loose in even hairpin curves or corkscrew curves during my road test. It is really like driving on rails at high speed and when dicing through the curves. Amazing technology and its only available in the M Sport models. Standard vehicle dynamic control with traction control automatically adjusts brake pressure and engine torque during certain situations where the car is at its handling limit, helping you keep on your intended path. You can shut both systems off the let the rear end shake a bit when dicing through curves at high speed.

The perfectly balanced M45S features Infiniti’s enhanced next-generation FM (front-midship) platform that positions the engine behind the front axle resulting in an optimized front-to-rear weight balance which factors in weight transfer during high-speed driving maneuvers. The M45S’s 19X9in. large diameter wheels/tires are positioned out near the corners of the car, helping to further enhance handling.

Quickly and safely slowing the car down from speed are large, four-wheel vented disc brakes. Up front are 12.6in. vented discs clamped with dual-piston calipers, and 12…1in. vented rear discs clamped with single-piston calipers. Enhancing braking for and control are standard ABS, Electronic Brake Force Distribution and Brake Assist.

The M45S is available with Infiniti’s Lane Departure Warning (LDW and Lane Departure Prevention (LDP) systems. LDP utilizes the M45’s vehicle dynamic control system to apply slight brake pressure to the wheels opposite the side of the lane departure direction to help you return the car back toward the center of the travel lane. The LDP system uses a small camera installed behind the windshield to detect lane markers in front, calculate its position relative to those lane markers and warn you of a potential unintended lane departure with a visual display and audible buzzer. If you don’t return the vehicle in the direction of the center of the travel lane, the LDP system assists you with a gentle application of the brakes.

Standard safety features inside include Infiniti’s advanced airbag system with dual-stage front airbags with seatbelt and occupant classification sensors, front seat-mounted side impact airbags, roof-mounted curtain side impact airbags for front and rear-seat outboard occupant head protection, 3-point seat belts up front with load limiters/pretentioners, seat belt adjustable shoulder height anchors, front active head restraints, front/rear crumple zones, and steel beams in each door.

Toyota Prius Hybrid – ‘THE ORIGINAL AND STILL THE BEST’

First introduced in 1997 as the world’s first mass-produced hybrid automobile, the all-new, third-generation Prius hybrid sedan sets new standards for innovative hybrid design and technology, raising its level of convenience features and performance to new heights, including a combined EPA estimated fuel efficiency rating of 50 miles per gallon.

The third-generation midsize 2010 Prius offers better mileage ratings, enhanced performance, and innovative design features. The patented Hybrid Synergy Drive system in the 2010 Prius is 90% newly developed, with significant improvements over previous models. The new Prius is quieter and roomier than before as well. It comes equipped with advanced standard and available features such as a moonroof with solar panels, four driving modes, bigger tires/wheels, rearview TV camera, Lane Keep Assist, Intelligent Parking Assist (IPA) and steering wheel touch buttons that display on the instrument cluster.

Credited with establishing hybrid technology as a foundation for future vehicles, the three generations of the Prius model have delivered superior fuel mileage and ultra-low emissions for more than 1.3 million owners worldwide.

There are five trim levels offered starting with Prius 1 all the up to Prius V. I tested a nicely loaded Prius IV.

The heart of the new Prius is, of course, its Hybrid Synergy Drive system, first introduced in 2004 on the second-generation Prius. The system is 90% new and was developed by Toyota engineers increasing both power and fuel mileage. The larger, 1.8 liter, all-aluminum, DOHC 4-cylinder engine features VVT-i to flatten the torque band and further increase fuel economy. It generates 98hp at 5,200rpm and 105lbs.ft. of torque at 4,000rpm. Together with the electric motor, power is increased to 134 net horsepower.

Acceleration is quicker with 60mph from standstill coming in only 9.8sec. New features include a redesigned electric fuel pump and a new gas recirculation system that improves fuel efficiency.

The new 1.8 liter engine is Toyota’s first engine not to need an accessory belt reducing maintenance costs and increasing efficiency. The Prius is a ‘full-hybrid’ allowing you to drive on the engine alone, the battery alone, or a combination. There are four driving modes-Normal, EV (battery alone for up to 1 mile), Power mode increasing sensitivity to throttle input for quicker acceleration and a more sporty feel), you can really feel the difference, and an Eco mode that helps to achieve the best of both and works best in heavy traffic or at high speeds on the freeway.

However you want the Prius to drive, you have a choice, and you will save money on fuel costs, any which way.

The engine is hooked up to a front-wheel-drive, electronically controlled, continuously variable transmission that is quiet and smooth. There are no pauses between shift changes for smooth acceleration.

The new stylish looks preserve the dynamic triangle form of the current model but made alterations to the overall profile such as changing the pillar position and angle, keeping the overall height but moving the peak 3.9in. to the rear maintaining the wedge shape and increasing rear headroom and improving aerodynamics. The front and rear corners are sharper giving it a more sporty look and enhancing aerodynamics. A strong character line rises from the front to the rear that defines the smooth aero shape. In the rear you’ll notice a wider track giving the new Prius a solid, firmly rooted stance. The 1.06in. wheelbase remains the same. The overall length is increased by 0.06in. by moving the front cowl forward. Many hours were spent in the wind tunnel focusing on the shape of the body, underfloor, wheelhouse liner, and wheel face design. With a coefficient of drag of only 0.25, the new Prius is one of the most aerodynamic in the industry. There is a lip spoiler on the edge to the rear hatch to enhance downforce and increase stability.

The Prius has its own unique design and doesn’t look like any other Toyota, or any other vehicle on the market.

Driving the all-new 2010 Prius was more fun and enjoyable that I expected. With the new Power mode you can accelerate with the rest of the gasoline only powered vehicles that are usually more powerful. I was totally impressed with how fast initial acceleration was. Top speed is now governed at 112mph, 9mph more than last year.

That fact is the result of the more powerful engine and the use of lightweight aluminum for the hood, rear hatch, front stabilizer bar and brake calipers, and by using super high-tensile strength steel in the inner rocker panel, center pillar and roof reinforcement. The new Prius weighs in at just 3,042lbs.

Underpinning the chassis is a third-generation platform that enables improved control and quieter operation. The suspension employs front MacPherson struts and in the rear an intermediate torsion beam design and a stabilizer bar as before, but smoother handling is increased by improving the stabilizer bar layout, utilizing a higher caster angle and tuning the bushing characteristics. The ride is always smooth over well paved road surfaces and the electric power-assisted rack & pinion steering system works very well with a very feel for the road, and fast reaction to your inputs. Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control and Traction Control work in conjunction work together to help you stay on your chosen path. The cabin is much quieter using higher-performing sound insulation, working with improved vibration damping, that have been installed in various locations to reduce road noise.

Quickly and safety slowing the Prius down from speed are new, standard hydraulic with power assistance and an integrated regenerative brake system to charge the batter when applied. Up front are 10in. vented rotors, and replacing last year’s rear drums are 10.2in. solid discs. Enhancing braking power and controls are ABS, Electronic Brake Force Distribution and Brake Assist.

The new Prius rides on standard 5-spoke, 15X6in. wheels, wrapped with 195/55R15in. tires, or you can option, for the first time, a set of 5-spoke,17X7in. aluminum alloy wheels, wrapped with 215/45R17in. all-season radial tires.

The overall handling and performance is much improved from last year with the Power mode enabling you to easily slip through slow city traffic and the Eco mode is just right for heavy traffic at rush hour. Gas prices are rising again and you’ll smile as you pass gas stations with an EPA mileage rating of 51mpg/city and 48/mpg highway.

You’ll also smile when you open the front door and check out the new interior design. Sit back in the more comfortable and supportive front bucket seat and you can see that the center cluster smoothly flows from the instrument panel to the console and is slightly canted to you. All controls are within easy reach and fully illuminated. Handy storage space has been added under the shift lever by taking advantage of the shift-by-wire system. The padded center console also slides and contains a large bin for storage as well as dual cupholders. You’ll also find extra storage in the dual-level glovebox and door pockets. Simple, fin-type air vents are consistent with the cabin’s efficient appearance. Lots of silver accents add a finished, technical look and feel. A new Touch Tracer Display features touch sensors on the sporty, tilt/telescoping, leather wrapped steering wheel switches that are designed to reduce driver eye movement for better concentration on the road. When you touch the audio or info switch located on the steering wheel, a duplicate image is displayed on the instrument panel, directly in front of you. Touch Tracer is the first display system in the world to allow steering wheel controls to display in the instrument panel. The Eco indicator on the Multi-Informational Display provides driver feedback to encourage more economical driving. For a more sporty feel and look the stick shifter was moved from the dashboard onto the center console.

In pursuit of new technologies for sustainable mobility, Toyota uses plant-derived, carbon-neutral plastics in the 2010 Prius. Known as ‘ecological plastic’, the new material is used in the seat cushion foam, cowl side trim, inner and outer scuff plates, and deck trim cover. Ecological plastic emits less CO2 during the production process than conventional plastic; it also helps reduce petroleum use. The rear, 60/40 split, folding bench seatback has a pull-down armrest and dual cupholders.

The cargo area was made 0.4in. longer and 2.2in. wider by using a new an improved layout for the battery cooling unit. Rear seat legroom is enhanced by a new space-saving contoured front seat design.

An optional sliding glass sunroof is packaged with solar panels that are located over the rear seating area that power the new ventilation system. This solar powered ventilation system helps keep the interior air temperature near the outside ambient temperature, when parked directly in the sun. Cool-down time is shorter when you return to the vehicle, thus reducing the use of air conditioning. The new Prius also offers a remote air conditioning system. It is the first system in the world to function on battery-power alone, and allows remote operation so you can cool the interior temperature for comfort before getting into the car.

LEDs, optional in low beam headlamps, and standard in tail and stop lamps, help reduce the vehicle’s power consumption. Air conditioning, a major energy drain, has been re-engineered to increase efficiency and cool-down performance. Additionally, an exhaust heat recirculation system reduces heat waste by warming engine coolant during cold startup, for improved performance. It also heats up the passenger cabin more efficiently.

Standard equipment inside the all-new Prius not mentioned above include a JBL AM/FM/MP3/6-disc CD with 8-speakers and satellite radio, Bluetooth, auxiliary audio jack, smart key to automatically unlock the doors when approaching, push button engine start/stop, grab handles above each door, 6-way manual adjustable driver’s seat with power lumbar adjustments, cruise-control, auto climate control system with Plasmacluster air filtration, power door locks, power windows with all express up/down, heated front seats, heated/power-remote sideview mirrors, auto-dimming reaview mirror, dual map lights, dual vanity mirrors with lights, thick cut-pile carpeting and floor mats.

Options not mentioned above include Toyota’s DVD navigation system with touch screen, XM NavTraffic/USB port with iPod connectivity, dynamic radar cruise control, lane keep assist, intelligent parking assist, pre-collision system and parking assist.

Standard safety systems aboard include driver/front passenger 3-point safety belts with load limiters/pretensioners, 3-3-point seats belts in the rear, driver/front passenger front airbags/side airbags, front/rear side curtain airbags, driver’s knee airbag, steel beams in each door, front and rear crumple zones, active headrest up front, child protector rear door locks, adjustable front seatbelt shoulder anchors, engine immobilizer, and the LATCH system for child seats.

The all-new 2010 Prius is still the best of all of the hybrid vehicles it competes against. This purpose-built hybrid sedan comfortably seats five persons, is fun to drive and contains all of the latest in comfort, ergonomics, automotive high tech and advanced safety systems in a package that no other manufacturer can match.

If you are looking to save money on gasoline purchases as prices continue to rise,

and want to help making a small footprint on the environment, then you have to test drive the all-new 2010 Toyota Prius.

“The Camry of Full-Size Sedans”

With all the talk in the press about the Camry as being the best-selling mid-size sedan, not much attention is paid to the full-size version, Toyota’s flagship the Avalon. I’ve tested several Camry’s but never got the chance to drive an Avalon. The news is that the Avalon is a smooth ride, comfortable and roomy for five adults, well appointed with the latest in personal features, and very safe in the event of a collision.

There are three trim levels offered including the base XL, mid-level XLS and the Limited. All trim levels come standard with the 268hp 3.8 liter V6 engine which operates smoothly and quietly. I tested the Limited which offered every kind of automotive near luxury and luxury items that I have found in other quality, full-size vehicles.

This ‘Camry on steroids’ has its own styling, interior design, and shares its only engine, the 3.8 liter V6, with the ‘top-of-the-line’ Camry. The Avalon is designed and manufactured for larger families and consumers that need the extra interior and larger trunk space.

What is really enjoyed about driving the Avalon was its smooth, seamless ride, thanks to its long wheelbase and suspension, around town and on the freeway. The 268hp V6 puts out plenty of power and torque to quickly move the Avalon at launch or when you need to pass slower traffic.

This smooth running V6 is mated to Toyota’s 6-speed ECT-i automatic transmission. For a litter bit more excitement you can shift the transmission out of automatic mode and hold the six gears almost to redline to increase acceleration and drive it like you had a 6-speed manual.

The smooth, controlled ride and handling behind the wheel of the Avalon is the result of its fully-independent suspension that makes use of MacPherson struts, front and rear. Up front is a stabilizer bar to help keep body lean to a minimum on curving roads. The rear features a dual-link MacPherson strut setup also with a stabilizer bar to lessen rear body lean. The suspension does an excellent job of smoothing out the bumps on poorly paved roads and rides like you are on ice when traveling on a smooth blacktop freeway.

The power-assisted rack & pinion steering system gives quick reaction to my inputs and is nicely weighted with very good on center and feel for the road. I was impressed how well this large sedan reacted to where I wanted it to go. Electronic Stability Control and All-Speed Traction Control help to keep you on your chosen path. While not the sporty type, these stability systems help you stay in control during severe maneuvers or when driving on slick surfaces.

Quickly slowing the new Avalon down from speed are large, 4-wheel, power-assisted steel disc brakes. Up front are 11.7in. vented discs clamped with dual-piston calipers and in the rear are 11.2in. solid discs clamped with single-piston calipers. The braking system is enhanced with ABS, Electronic Brake Force Distribution and Brake Assist. The brakes reacted to my foot quickly with a fine linear feel.

The 2009 Toyota Avalon Limited rides on standard 9-spoke, 17X7in. aluminum alloy wheels wrapped with 215/55R17in. all-season radial tires for a compliant ride with excellent grip.

On the outside, the Avalon Limited has a confident, wide stance for a sporty look. Up front is a sleek grille with chrome accented horizontal bars and HID headlamp clusters. The lower valance is fitted with round foglamps at the sides. The low front end, swept-back windshield pillars, power-remote side mirrors with LED arrows, subtle character line, chrome-pull-out door handles, and a full-perimeter chrome strip around the greenhouse, defines its contemporary profile. Out back are large, wraparound taillight clusters, a sculpted trunk, and wide, polished stainless steel dual exhaust tips, giving the rear a sporty look.

Inside is the Avalon’s best asset with wide-opening doors and a roomy space for five adults. Rear seat passengers will surely enjoy the seats that can recline up to 10-degrees, and the flat floor. The Limited model came with every comfort, luxury and safety features that I have found so far in the competition of near luxury large sedans.

The front leather-trimmed bucket seats are large to accommodate any size person but the seat backs need more support. The driver-side seat bottom comes with a power cushion extension to further the comfort. The power adjustments give you the perfect angle as does the manual tilt/telescoping/leather and wood wrapped steering wheel with buttons for the audio system, cruise control and climate control. These front bucket seats also come standard with heating and cooling controls mounted on the console of the flow-through center stack and center console that comes in a metallic finish. Both the audio system and Toyota navigation control panels have closing doors to give it a unique look. There is a lot of plastic but it doesn’t take away too much from the high-tech looks, but I would have liked to have seen more of the standard wood grained dashboard, switch plates and door panels in the center stack and center console, but it does break up the wood trim.

The Optitron instrument cluster is easy to see with large 160mph speedometer, 8,000rpm tachometer and smaller fuel and engine coolant temperature gauges. Bright LED icons tell you of system or safety failures. To the right of the cluster is the display window for the multi-function information computer display with message, audio, climate control, outside temperature and trip information. Besides reclining seats in the rear, it also comes with air-vents at the end of the console for better air circulation and a pull-down center armrest with dual cupholders and a storage bin. Speaking of storage, up front in the console are dual cupholders and just behind is another storage bin with a closing top. The sliding, padded leather armrest up front has storage that is deep and wide. The front door storage slit pivots out to make it easier to load or unload items into each side. The trunk is huge giving you 14.4cu.ft. of cargo space.

Standard equipment in the Avalon Limited not mentioned above includes full-size alloy wheel and spare tire, remote keyless entry and exit with Toyota’s Smart Key that also includes push button start/stop, a rear window defogger, power moonroof, dual heated outside mirrors, aluminum door scuff plates, dual map lamps, fuel filler door/trunk remote releases, power door locks/windows with express up/down feature up front, dual-zone climate control with air filtration, electronic cruise control, rear passengers reading lamps, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, dual vanities with lighted mirrors and extensions, grab handles above each door, memory driver’s seat/side mirrors, power rear sunshade, Bluetooth auxiliary audio jack, Homelink universal garage door opener, JBL 360-watt, Synthesis Surround Sound audio system 6-CD changer with 12-speakers, subwoofer, and integrated XM satellite radio receiver. Optional is the Toyota voice activated navigation system and carpeted floor mats and trunk mat. I was surprised that my fully loaded test Avalon Limited didn’t’ come with a rearview TV camera or rear sensors since it came with the full color Toyota DVD navigation system.

Standard safety systems include driver/front passenger airbags, and side airbags, front and rear seat side curtain airbags, driver knee airbag, three-point safety belts with adjustable shoulder anchors for driver/front passenger, pretensioners/load limiters up front and in the rear, daytime running lamps, front/rear crumple zones, steel beams in each door, engine immobilizer, anti-theft system child protector rear door locks, and the LATCH system for child seats.

There is plenty of competition in the near-luxury, large sedan segment headed by the all-new Ford Taurus, Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, Chevy Impala, Buick Lucerne, and Nissan Maxima, but the new 2009 Toyota Avalon is the best of them all with overall high quality of materials, workmanship, engineering and price which starts at $35,185.00 for the base Limited, and $37,985.00 for the loaded model that I tested.

When the original 300C hit the streets back at the turn of this century, it hit it big with enthusiasts waiting for the return of rear wheel drive, a big V8 engine, packaged into a full-size sedan. When the Charger appeared it took with it the enthusiasts who wanted more edgy performance and styling. The Chrysler 300C always stood for elegant style, Hemi power, comfortable high-performance handling, and luxury.

With the introduction of the new 2009 300C Heritage Edition, consumers wanting the elegant style and luxury found in a 300C, but needed that more edgy performance, now have the opportunity to have both.

The new Heritage Edition combines the same edgy, sport-tuned suspension, performance shocks, and a performance steering gear found in the Dodge Charger RT Daytona. On the outside Chrysler adds a unique, bright chromed mesh grille, chin spoiler, rear trunk lip spoiler, and ‘Heritage Edition’ badges on the front fenders. The Heritage Edition 300C doesn’t look or perform like the factory 300C, it only does it better and is a terrific bargain for a full-size, powerful, high-performing luxury sedan. It’s the way I would want my 300C to look and handle.

Since its introduction the Chrysler 300C has been a winner with all enthusiasts and pundits gaining points for styling, engineering, comfort, luxury and safety for a reasonable price.

The new chromed mesh grille adds more style and bling up front, while the front fender ‘Heritage Edition’ badges have red, white and blue colors beneath the two words to dress them up-level, and the front/rear spoilers increase downforce for added stability.

It is just the right amount of bling and glitz not offensive to most, just a wide stripe on top of the front bumper, under the quad HID headlamps, doors, door handles, side mirror housing, a strip along the beltline and around the greenhouse. The rear shows a strip above the bumper and bright polished dual round exhaust tips set between the bottom diffuser.

In the right angle the giant 20X8in. chrome clad aluminum wheels are blinding, and each is wrapped with Goodyear, all-season, high-performance 245/45R20in. tires.

Inside is plush, sporty, comfortable, and luxurious with power adjustable/heated real Nappa leather trimmed sports seats with suede inserts, ‘Heritage Edition’ vertical badges on each seat back top.

More chrome has been added to the dual cupholders and door trim panels. The center storage bin/armrest contains lots of space for your needed items. The power tilt/telescoping leather/wood wrapped steering wheel feels perfect in your hands as does the perfectly placed, leather/chrome stick shifter.

The instrument cluster is elegant with silver bezels around the analog gauges, easy to see and understand. The brushed aluminum center stack has easy to use controls for the audio/navigation/personal communication systems and dual-zone climate control system with air filtration. Light colored California Poplar burl wood trim is placed on the center console and passenger-side dashboard adding to the luxury look. The door pulls also feature the same wood as the steering wheel.

All switches, dials and buttons are within easy reach and fully illuminated for safe nighttime driving. All of the touch points are soft and shows Chrysler’s attention to detail and workmanship. The rear seats are heated with a pull down armrest with dual cupholders. Air ducts mounted on the rear of the center console brings cooled or heated air into the rear more efficiently. Above each rear door is a grab handle making entry and exit easier.

Under the skin is the new, more powerful 360hp, 5.7 liter HEMI V8 engine with variable cam timing and a Multi-Displacement-System (MDS) that shuts off 4-cylinders under light throttle to increase fuel efficiency. An ‘ECO’ LED lights up in the space next to the outside temperature readout on the top of the instrument cluster when you go into MDS letting you know that you are saving gas. The system is seamless, only the lighted ECO letting you know. I was driving the car on level freeway with light throttle at 68mph and the ‘ECO’ light came on and stayed until I increased the pressure on the throttle.

The powerful HEMI V8 engine with a high-speed engine controller is mated to Chrysler’s 5-speed automatic transmission with AutoStick, and Adaptive Electronic Control. AutoStick lets you hold down the gear to redline increasing your ability to accelerate and de-accelerate. Adaptive Electronic Control learns your shifting habits choosing the best gear as you travel. The transmission is smooth and strong having no trouble handling the massive 389lb.ft. of torque. Putting all of the power down on the pavement is a responsive limited slip differential.

The 300C ‘Heritage Edition’ gets the high-performance tuned, fully independent suspension found on the Dodge Charger ‘Daytona’ RT. Up front is a SLA (short/long arm) setup with high upper ‘A’ arms, coil springs over gas-charged shocks, and a stabilizer bar. The high-performance tuned rear features a 5-link setup with an isolated suspension cradle to attach the coil springs, specially tuned Nivomat self-leveling gas-charged shocks, and stabilizer bar. It’s more responsive in the turns keeping the rear inline and fully patched to the road, and cuts out all noise, vibration and harshness.

You can of course shut off the traction control and stability control systems to let the rear slid out as you slice through tough curving back roads.

Enhancing control even further is the hydraulic power-assist, rack & pinion performance-tuned, 9-land steering gear from the Daytona and SRT models. It gives you a tremendous feel for the road surface and returns almost instant response to your steering inputs. The only negative part of the steering system is when you are in a parking lot traveling about 20mph as it feels as if you lost your power steering system. But is a small price to pay when you are traveling at high speeds, or carving up curving roads glued to the road.

Quickly slowing the 300C ‘Heritage Edition’ down from speed are large, power-assisted, 4-wheel, steel disc brakes. Up front are 13.6in. vented discs clamped with dual-piston calipers, and 12.6in. solid discs in the rear clamped with single-piston calipers. Standard ABS and Brake Assist ensures that you remain in control while braking hard, or when traveling over slick or wet road surfaces.

The new 2009 Chrysler 300C ‘Heritage Edition’ comes fully equipped with these standard features not mentioned above: power adjustable pedals, cruise-control, rain sensitive, intermittent wipers/washers, power windows/door locks with express up/down up front, remote keyless entry/exit, universal garage door opener, rear window defogger, u-connect Sirius Satellite Radio, 276-watt digital amphifier/six speakers, steering wheel mounted audio control/trip computer readouts/personal settings, radio/driver’s seat/steering column memory, self-dimming rearview mirrors, power-remote/heated/self-dimming side mirrors, illuminated entry, illuminated rear map pockets, dual front map lamps/rear reading lamps, illuminated dual vanity mirrors, and front/rear Berber floor mats.

Options included in my test 300C were a 368-watt amphifier DSP with 7-Boston Acoustic speakers/subwoofer, iPod enterface, rear park sensors, power sunroof, and Chrysler’s Multi-Media Navigation System with GPS, Sirius Satellite Radio/Traffic, Video Entertainment System to play DVD’s with a Sirius Backseat TV system folded and mounted on top of the center console. The only option not found on this 300C was the Adaptive Cruise Control.

Wow! My time behind the wheel of the new 300C ‘Heritage Edition’ was both fun and exiting. My favorite rear-wheel-drive model is the 300C and now with the specially tuned fully independent suspension, steering, and 20in. wheel/tires, it handles more like a high-performance sedan which was dearly missed before, except for the SRT model.

Just a few exterior pieces like the new chrome mesh grille and front fender badges differentiates this 300C ‘Heritage Edition’ from the other 300C’s, plus you can have more fun and exciting times on the back roads and steep curves.
