Officially, the fastest a Lexus LFA Nürburgring Edition has ever lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife is in 7:22.85. That’s an amazing performance, and it makes the car faster than a Porsche 911 GT2 RS (on stock tires) or a Pagani Zonda F Clubsport. That time is over fifteen seconds faster than a standard LFA, proving that the Nürburgring Edition’s improved aerodynamics, modest power gain and faster shifting can translate to real-world benefits with the right driver on the right track. If you look at Porsche’s current product catalog, there’s a pretty big gap between the sold-out $245,000 GT2 RS (the fastest road-going Porsche ever built) and the $845,000 918 Spyder, whose performance numbers have yet to be established or verified. Porche’s head of global sales, Bernhard Maier, smells opportunity in this segment, and he recently leaked the information that Porsche is looking to develop a high-performance model that slots in between the GT2 RS and the 918 Spyder. Could it be an updated Carrera GT, perhaps? Read more

If you’ve always wanted an R8 with just a bit more schnell, you’d best get in touch with your Audi dealer, pronto. Audi’s announced pricing on their new 560 horsepower, V10 R8 GT, and only 90 will be brought into the United States. The price of admission starts at $196,800, but that amount of cash buys you some impressive performance. Zero to sixty two miles per hour (or 100 kph) comes up in a mere 3.6 seconds, and the top speed is said to be 199 miles per hour (wink, wink, nudge, nudge). Extensive use of carbon fiber has shaved some 180 pounds from the car when compared to an Audi A8 5.2 quattro coupe. Read more

Spyker Sells Luxury Car Business

A Spyker C8 Spyder. Image: Karrmann

The Spyker C8 Aileron was something of a mystery to buyers. On the one hand, its 600 horsepower, curb weight of just 2,750 pounds and top speed in excess of 200 miles per hour certainly qualified it for supercar status. On the other hand, Spyker never pitched the C8 against the likes of Ferrari or Lamborghini; instead, they billed the $220,000 ride as a “luxury sports car”, aimed at a more refined clientele. I’m not sure this strategy ever paid off, because outside of concours d’elegance events where Spykers were available for test drives, I’ve never seen one on the road. Read more

Paris Hilton Gets A Lexus LFA For Her Birthday

Lexus LFA

In the you-can’t-make-this-stuff-up department comes word that Paris Hilton just got a Lexus LFA for her 30th birthday. The car was a gift from her latest chew toy boyfriend, Las Vegas nightclub owner Cy Waits, and gets added to Hilton’s stable of cars she’ll never possibly appreciate, like her pink Bentley Continental GT or her blue Bentley ragtop. I’m sure Paris has all the skills necessary to stay out of trouble in a 560 horsepower, 202 mile per hour supercar; after all, she hasn’t had an accident (or a drug charge) in months! Read more

Meet The Newest V12 Lamborghini

Lamborghini isn’t letting us see their latest V12 supercar up close and personal until next month’s Geneva Motor Show, but that didn’t stop them from leaking the above image of the new car in camo guise. The good news is that this test mule isn’t clad in black vinyl, so we get a decent feel for the lines of the car. If this is the final design, I have to say two thumbs up; Lamborghini had been going down a bizarre styling path lately (case in point: the Reventon), and this car pulls them back to center. You can see the influences from Murcielago, but I’m also seeing heritage here. The muscular front fenders remind me of the iconic Countach, but in a more evolved manner. Read more

These are interesting times we live in. While currently blessed with an absurd amount of horsepower and performance, available from virtually every manufacturer, we enthusiasts can see the writing on the wall. CAFE standards are about to go from strict to absurd, and like it or not we’ll be served up hybrid or turbocharged small displacement engine options as our only alternatives. Want a V8? Sucks to be you, because you’re not getting one for much longer, except in a select number of halo cars sold in low volumes at high prices. Read more

Supercars are now part of a new club in my opinion. Whether you agree with me or not, a new benchmark as has been set for performance cars to be called a “supercar”. The 200mph mark seems almost like a standard if a car wants to be in the once-sacred “supercar status”. I realize many supercars only reach speeds just shy of 200mph but when you consider the over-all performance of some vehicles and the astonishing capabilities, you might as-well welcome them to the 200mph club. With a few (pricy) bolt-ons or ECU programming you may be able to add another 10 to 20 mph to the top speed of many supercars anyway.

Our good friend, Chris Grosser, set out to Ochopee, Florida at a rented 2 mile long aviation runway just recently. The goal was to achieve top speed (in a supercar) during a series of runs in a controlled environment. I am not sure of anything that is more fun other than blasting down flat-out on a runway in a supercar. Below is the excerpt from Chris’s new blog. I encourage you to check out some of his professional photography shots if you have the time.
