Ford isn’t calling their Vertrek concept a replacement for the aging Escape just yet, but the writing is on the wall. Ford’s published comparison charts showing the Vertrek against both the Escape and the E.U. market Kuga; if I were a betting man, I’d be comfortable putting money down on the Vertrek as a global platform replacement for both existing compact SUVs. It’s based on their C-Segment architecture, and it’s no secret that Ford has ambitious plans for the platform in the coming years. It’s an ideal fit for both the 1.6 and 2.0 liter EcoBoost engines (on this side of the pond), and Ford has stated that the 2.0 liter Duratorq diesel will fit under the hood in the EU (where 96% of Kugas are sold with diesel motors). I’m pretty sure it’s a matter of “when” we see it in dealer showrooms, not “if” like most concept vehicles.

Image: Ford Motor Company

Dimensionally, the Vertrek is longer, lower and wider than the Escape, and that’s a good thing for both handling and appearance. Like the redesigned Explorer, the Vertrek will offer a more car-like ride, more passenger legroom and improved cargo capacity. Better ride quality is something that the Escape replacement definitely needs, since the current Escape isn’t up to standards set by others in the class (including Toyota’s RAV4 or Honda’s CR-V). Fit and finish of the current Escape isn’t up to standards set by other Ford products, either.

Image: Ford Motor Company

Expect to see some of the Vertrek’s exterior styling toned back for production, but I hope they keep more than just the feel of the concept car’s lines. Compact SUVs, even the latest generation, tend to suffer from utterly bland styling, designed not to offend the masses. Ford deserves credit for adding some flair to an otherwise uninspired market segment, but don’t expect production vehicles to come with the Vertrek’s woven leather floor mats or lederhosen inspired velour leather upholstery. If we’re lucky, it won’t come to market with that name, either.

“The Four Wheel Luxury Liner”

For the past year total automobile sales have declined more than 40% across the entire spectrum of vehicles. Full-size luxury sport utilities haven’t been immune to this fact and it’s not solely because of their low mpg or high price. Well to do consumers still number in the hundreds of thousands that need power and torque to tow and carry large families, and corporations still need transportation surrounded by luxury for their clients. It’s the downturn in the economy that has well to do consumers and corporations being cautious and careful where the money is spent.

The automakers still must design and manufacture full-size, luxury sport utilities for consumers but have cut production numbers just like they have for full-size and mid-size pickup trucks, full-size and mid-size sedans with the only uptick being compact cars because their prices are usually below $18,000.00 and they average above 30mpg.

The original Infiniti QX56 was introduced in early 2004 and quickly established itself as one of the best all-around full-size, luxury sport utility vehicles. This was well before the economic downturn but there still is a market for these large, luxury people movers.

Following extensive revisions for the 2008 model year, the 2010 QX56 continues to stand apart from the competition with a style all its own. Its inspired performance can be seen in its elegant exterior design, tailored interior and refined appointments-and experienced in the power and strength of its standard 320hp 5.6 liter V8 and responsive 4-wheel independent suspension with an auto-leveling rear design. The QX56 comes standard with rear-wheel-drive or an optional Infiniti All-Mode 4WD system.

The 2010 Infiniti QX56’s refined exterior styling provides a presence befitting its top-luxury status. The front features the distinctive QX56 ‘waterfall’ grille that is surrounded by a full-body type front fascia with jewel-like HID headlights and halogen fog lights. At the rear, a body-color fascia enhances the unique LED taillight design, further providing visual distinction from the competition. A remote-operated power liftgate with opening rear glass is standard. Also standard are the 20X8in. chromed wheels and integrated side body cladding that add a classy and imposing stance. A smooth, one-piece roof rack provides additional cargo hauling ability. Other standard exterior features include dual power-adjustable power-folding, heated sideview mirrors with puddle lamps, integrated turn signals and driver’s-side auto-dimming feature, privacy glass for the 2nd. and 3rd rows, and color-keyed running boards to easy entry and exit. Rear sonar sensors work along with the RearView Monitor system, which utilizes a small camera discretely located in the rear license plate finisher to provide a view (projected on the standard navigation system’s LCD monitor) from the rear of the vehicle of what is behind the QX56 when backing up. QX56 4WD models include skidplates for the oil pan, transfer case and fuel tank, along with a trailer hitch and 7-pin harness plug. The Tow Package is optional on 2WD models. The exterior is unique and contains design cues from all Infiniti luxury models.

I call QX56 a luxury liner because it reminds me of the interior of the finest luxury power boats with its use of authentic materials such as wood veneer, aluminum, stainless steel, Sojourner leather-appointed seating surfaces and thick Tuscano carpeting. The interior boasts class-leading 2nd-row legroom (41.9in.) and a standard power fold-flat 60/40-split 3rd.-row seat.

The long list of interior features include a gated shifter for the standard 5-speed automatic transmission, genuine wood grain interior trim and standard heated, power-tilting, steering wheel, grab handles above each door, dual map lamps, dual, lighted vanity mirrors, floor mats, dual cupholders, and a large storage bin with padded armrest. The instrument cluster is easy to see and understand combining Fine Vision electroluminescent gauges with a signature Infiniti analog clock. More standard features include dual-zone front automatic temperature control, and rear AC with dual controls (front and rear) and rear heater ducts.

The comfortable and supportive front buckets feature 10-way driver’s/8-way front passenger heated power adjustable seats. Your driving position is further optimized through standard power-adjustable brake, and accelerator pedals and a driver’s memory system that includes memory for the pedals, sideview mirrors, driver’s seat and steering wheel. The standard 7-passenger seating configuration includes fold-flat 2nd. row captains chairs with integrated armrests and a removable 2nd. row center console. A fold-flat 2nd. row split bench seat is also available, providing comfortable 8-passenger seating.

The 3rd. row seating area is elevated to provide a commanding forward view and features standard roof-mounted curtain supplemental airbags for side-impact and rollover protection.

Storage space is plentiful in the QX56 with its full-length rear overhead console, a front overhead console with sunglass holder, front center console with large storage capacity and power outlets, side storage bins and a maximum of 12 cup-holders. With the front passenger seat and rear seats folded, it is possible to carry long items such as surfboards with the rear liftgate closed. For easier package handling, the QX56 includes rear area ceiling/floor-mounted cargo tie-down points and an optional cargo net. A chrome roof rack further expands your cargo carrying capacity.

Every 2010 QX57 also offers an Infiniti Intelligent Key system, Bluetooth Hands-Free Phone system, and a 12-speaker Bose Premium Audio system with Burr-Brown DAC and 9.3GB Music Box Hard Drive for digital music storage and playback. The audio system includes dual media capability, AM-FM-CD, steering wheel-mounted controls and compact flash slot for playing MP3 files.

Also standard is an Infiniti Hard Drive Navigation system with 7in. LCD touch screen, Birdview Lane Guidance, 3D building graphics, and XM NavTraffic with real-time traffic information. The system displays current traffic conditions in color-coded images overlaid on the navigation system map. An Infiniti Mobile Entertainment system with a DVD player mounted in the front center console, auxiliary audio/video input jacks, large flip-down ceiling-mounted 8in. monitor, as well as two wireless headphones and remote control is optional.

Quickly and safely moving the new QX57 is a 5.6 liter DOHC V8 engine producing 210hp at 5,200rpm and 393lb.ft. of torque at 3,400rpm. For hauling, towing or serious off-road driving, nearly 90% of the engine’s torque has been available below 2,500rpm.

A smooth and refined 5-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission is reinforced for the high-torque application and features unique gearing and transmission management through a variable lock-up torque converter and electronic controls for improving shift and fuel economy. Although smooth, I would like to see a 6-speed automatic transmission to help break 20mpg on the highway as the QX56 gets only 12mpg/city and 17mpg/highway.

A special tow/haul mode revises shift patterns when engaged and enables the QX56 to maintain a maximum towing capacity of 9,000lbs. for two-wheel drive and 8,900lbs. for four-wheel drive (when properly equipped).

Four-wheel drive models feature a quickly Infiniti all-mode 4WD system with 2WD/Auto/4Hi/4Lo modes and an electronically controlled part-time transfer case with low gear, activated through an easy selection switch knob on the center stack. The system is designed to instantly distribute torque to all four wheels whenever road conditions warrant (up to 50% can go to the front wheels on demand), resulting in optimal traction. I really liked the system easily going from 2WD to 4Hi and back with just a twist of the easy to reach knob.

The QX56 is built on a solid foundation of a fully boxed, high-strength steel F-Alpha frame. Rugged Dana front and rear axles provide the strength to handle on-and off-road challenges, while a comfortable and controlled ride is provided by a 4-wheel independent double-wishbone suspension with front and rear stabilizer bars to keep body lean to a minimum when cornering. The rear suspension also includes an auto-leveling system that seeks to maintain uniform ground clearance and departure angle, even when towing or carrying heavy cargo, by automatically adjusting the air pressure in the system’s air bladders.

The 2010 QX56 also features engine-speed-sensitive power-assisted rack & pinion steering that gives you great feel for the road at speed and makes maneuvering in parking lots easy.

Quickly slowing the QX56 down from speed are large, 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS, EBD, and BA. Up front are 13.6in. vented discs and 12.6in. solid discs in the rear.

For additional stability during severe maneuvers, a Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) with Active Brake Limited-Slip (ABLS) is standard on every QX56.

You ride on standard 20X8in. chrome-finished aluminum alloy wheels that are wrapped with 275/60R20in. Michelin all-season tires for great grip and a smooth ride over all types of road surfaces. A Tire Pressure Monitoring System with four-wheel independent monitoring includes a gauge-cluster mounted warning lamp.

Optional on QX56 is Infiniti’s advanced Intelligent Cruise Control, which, using a combination of laser sensors, throttle and brake actuators and QX56’s braking system, measures the distance to the vehicle ahead via a laser signal and automatically adjusts the QX56’s speed to maintain a pre-selected following distance. (Note-the Intelligent Cruise Control system is not intended for congested areas or city driving and will not brake the vehicle to a full stop.

The QX56’s extensive list of standard safety equipment includes an advanced airbag system with dual-stage supplemental front airbags, with seat belt and occupant classification sensors, roof-mounted curtain side impact supplemental airbags with rollover sensor for outboard occupant head protection for all three rows, front seat-mounted side impact airbags, 3-point seat belts with pretentioners and load limiters, 3-point seat belts for all rear seat occupants, including center position, front seat active head restraints, and LATCH system for child seats. The QX56 also offers Zone Body construction with front and rear crumple zones and steel side-door guard beams.

The QX56 is one of the best looking and best equipped full-size sport utilities on the road and can yours for a base price of $59,150.00 and $62,865.00 full loaded which is a fair price against the competition.

BMW has officially released details and images of the new upcoming BMW X1 SUV (SAV). This will be the smallest X (SUV) vehicle in BMW’s lineup.

At a short 4.45 meters long and a wheelbase of 2.76 meters, this small SUV will be rather reminiscent of the BMW 1-series.

Six different models of the X1 will be available with the majority of them available in Diesel for the European market. The gasoline powered model will be the X1 xDrive28i with a version of the 3.0-liter inline 6 cylinder which will make about 258hp.

Expect the BMW X1 to get its USA introduction in 2011. The US model engine’s may be the twin turbo 3.0-liter inline 6 that we all have grown to love in other BMW models. That’s going to be sweet!

PRESS RELEASE

THE BMW X1 CONFIRMED FOR UNITED STATES IN 2011

Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey – July 1, 2009 … It was confirmed today that the BMW X1 is planned to debut in the United States in calendar year 2011. The X1 has been conceived with the flexibility to offer traditional rear-wheel drive and xDrive all-wheel drive configurations, as well as a wide variety of gasoline and diesel powertrain choices. In light of rapidly evolving US market demands, fuel prices, and regulatory standards, elements of the X1′s US launch plan, including engine and drivetrain configurations, will be forthcoming closer to the time of launch.

The BMW X1 will debut in Europe this fall with a choice of four engines – one gasoline and three diesels – and will be available in rear-wheel drive and xDrive all-wheel drive configurations. The X1 will set new benchmarks in the premium compact segment for efficiency, comfort, utility, and of course driving dynamics. Achieving up to 5.2 L/100km (45.2 miles per US gallon) on the European test cycle, the BMW Advanced Diesel-powered X1 sDrive18d will provide remarkable fuel efficiency while still achieving a top speed of 200km/h (124mph). Each drivetrain choice for the X1 will showcase the latest results of BMW’s EfficientDynamics engineering strategy, which is focused to reduce emissions and consumption while enhancing the performance expected of any BMW.

Lexus introduced the first luxury crossover back in 1998 with the RX300. From that time Lexus has sold more than one million RX models making it the most successful luxury utility ever. The all-new 2010 RX350 once again raises the bar for design, engineering and luxury innovation in the segment by refining, retuning and adding the latest in automotive high technology.

The 2010 Lexus RX350 teams a revised 3.5 liter V6 engine with an all-new six-speed Multi-Mode automatic transmission. New intake and exhaust manifolds improve engine breathing for enhanced performance and fuel economy. Horsepower is increase to 275 at 6,200rpm from 270hp, while Lexus maximized the torque output to better meet the needs of luxury crossover owners. Ninety-percent or more of the 256lb.ft. of peak torque is now available from 2,300 to 6,100rpm, an optimal range where torque is most utilized. A new insulated engine cover, styled in the shape of two cylinder banks, conceals the new V6 to help ensure a quieter cabin, while easy-access points facilitate routine service such as adding oil.

Dual Variable Valve Time with intelligence (VVT-i) is used to control both intake and exhaust camshafts independently, optimizing engine performance at all speeds and loads.

Refinements to the valvetrain, including roller rocker arms and slimmer valve stems, reducing friction and weight to improve fuel economy. Also helping to enhance torque is the improved Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS), which varies the intake runner length in response to engine speed and throttle position. The ETCS-i (electronic throttle control system-intelligent) softens throttle response during initial acceleration for smoother takeoff and to help reduce wheel spin.

The 2010 RX350′s new six-speed automatic transmission replaces the previous five-speed. Using miniature high-flow linear solenoids to control transmission-fluid line-pressure, the transmission yields quicker shifting response. The torque converter uses a new low-speed lockup damper to enable lock-up from second to six gear to help improve the fuel economy.

When applying the accelerator pedal rapidly during kick-down, the new direct-downshift control allows the transmission to directly shift from sixth to third or fifth to second, skipping the intermediate gears to achieve the quickest response. Under normal kick-down pedal application, downshift control uses the intermediate gears to ensure the smoothest shift is attained. ‘Shift shock’, which was already commendably low in the previous model’s five-speed automatic, is further reduced. The Multi-Mode automatic allows you to shift manually when desired by first moving the gated shift lever to the ‘S’ slot and then pushing it forward (+) to up shift and backward (-) to downshift. An Artificial Intelligence shifting (AI-SHIFT) control, new to RX, sets shift patterns based on the vehicle speed and throttle position and estimates road conditions and driver input to automatically control the shift pattern. For example, when driving in hilly areas, AI-SHIFT can prevent unnecessary shifting. When descending inclines, the transmission prevents up shifts to achieve more engine braking. The refined engine and new transmission work seamlessly to give you a ride that is pure enjoyment. No noise, vibration or harshness when driving at moderate speeds taking care of business around town or when cruising on the highway at high speeds.

Lexus again offers its RX350 models with a choice between front-wheel-drive and all-wheel drive. The 2010 RX350 introduces an all-new electronically controlled Active Torque Control AWD system.

The previous RX350 model’s AWD system used a viscous coupling locking center differential to provide 50:50 torque distribution. In the 2010 RX350, Active Torque Control AWD uses an electronically controlled coupling ahead of the rear differential to vary torque distribution anywhere from 100:0 to 50:50 front to rear, depending on driving dynamics and road conditions. The new AWD system is 35lbs. lighter than before and reduces parasitic losses by 30%. When accelerating, or starting off on a low-grip surface, torque is quickly provided to all four wheels. At steady speeds, torque is sent only to the front wheels, enhancing fuel efficiency.

For handling agility and control, the AWD system increases rear-wheel torque when the vehicle’s front tires start to lose traction and decreases rear-wheel torque when the vehicle’s rear tires start to lose traction. On rough or sandy terrain, an AWD LOCK switch provides enhanced traction performance for low-speed maneuvering (if in LOCK mode, the system reverts to AUTO mode when your speed exceeds 25mph).

To help prevent a tight corner-braking condition (shuddering) during low-speed cornering, the system reduces rear wheel torque.

Lexus engineered the 3rd generation RX luxury utility vehicle to provide a more engaging driving experience while also making it quieter and smoother than its predecessor. The overall packaging of the new RX remains similar to that of the previous model. The new RX has a marginally longer wheelbase (+0.79in.) and is 1.38in. longer; the new model is slightly higher and 1.6in. wider than before. To help provide greater handling control, the track is 2.8in. wider. The engine’s output center has been lowered approximately 0.6in., yielding a lower overall powertrain center of gravity to help enhance vehicle agility.

A key factory in the RX model’s sharpened handling agility is the all-new uniquely designed double-wishbone rear suspension, which replaces a strut-based configuration. Another key benefit of the new rear suspension is that the packaging yields greater rear cargo room. Despite larger tires and a longer wheelbase, the new RX retains the 38.8ft. turning circle as before. The front suspension geometry was optimized for the new platform and features a new, thicker stabilizer bar, and retuned MacPherson gas-charged struts. New inversely wound front coil springs compress in opposite directions, preventing the negative effects of suspension compression on steering.

Speaking about guiding you on your chosen path, the new standard electric power-assisted rack & pinion steering system contributes to improved agility and steering feel while eliminating the parasitic losses of a hydraulic steering pump. When the driving conditions involve little steering effort, like cruising down a highway straightaway, energy consumption is reduced, improving fuel economy by nearly 3%. Steering assist is automatically adjusted in response to vehicle speed, with greater assist at low speeds and great feel at higher speeds. The system is boosted just right for that luxury ride feel.

The brakes on the new RX350 are enhanced for 2010 with a new two-piston front caliper and larger rotors up front, 12.9in. vented, and 12.2in. solid in the rear. Brake feel is enhanced by optimizing pads, pedal ratio and booster output characteristics. When you push the brake pedal down the feel is very linear and further enhancing braking is standard ABS and Brake Assist.

The new RX350 rides on new, wider 18X8in. aluminum alloy wheels that are wrapped with 235/60R18in. all-season tires. Optional 19X8in. aluminum alloy wheels come wrapped with 235/55R19in. all-season tires.

While the powertrain has been refined and the suspension system re-tuned for a smoother and more controlled driving experience, the new exterior styling gives the RX350 a more substantial and shaper look. It is a blend of a dynamic new version of L-finesse design while retaining the RX identity. The sleek profile is accentuated by broader ‘shoulders’ for a more athletic yet elegant presence. Bright finish side-window moldings follow a subtly concaved line across the A-pillars and C-pillars, extending at the front and rear ends. A thick chrome strip runs under the door bottom, and the arrowhead point of the rear window gives the look of motion.

The Lexus design cue of placing the grille lower than the headlamps, along with sharper headlight graphics, yields a strong frontal expression. The RX350 offers standard halogen and optional HID headlights. The plated upper edges of the front grille extend toward the headlights to draw the front features together. The lower edges of the grille form another unique arrowhead design. Subtle surface movement can be seen in the sculpted vertical bars that change shape as they spread forward. Pronounced front fenders flow into the doors, and integrated rear fender flares neatly sweep around to pull together the taut rear corners. The lower body emphasizes the standard 18in. wheels. A contrasting black strip runs completely around the body of the new RX350.

A distinctive feature of the door handles is that the surface subtly twists outward from the front to the rear to give a comfortable grip. The power-remote/heated side mirrors feature LED turn signal lamps.

The rear features new, larger, wraparound lamp cluster with LED bulbs, and the rear hatch is formed larger and shaper to help with loading and unloading cargo. The rear spoiler’s primary function is to help lower the RX’s coefficient of drag and also to conceal the rear wiper and houses the AM-FM antenna and high-mount stop lamp.

The all-new RX350 has grown substantially in length and width that adds to handling prowess and more room for passengers and cargo.

Based on Lexus L-finesse philosophy, the dramatically designed interior clearly separates the interior into two distinct zones-the ‘display zone’ to provide information, and the ‘operation zone’ for interaction with controls. The shoulder of the door trim comfortably envelops you and your fellow passengers, the clear line of the trim beginning inside the cabin and tapering outward toward the exterior. The design imbues a feeling of a continuous line encircling the occupants and defining the controls and displays. Neatly sculpted metallic surfaces, especially on the asymmetrical center stack, showcases a bold contrast of shadow and light.

A new, higher contrast while Organic Light Emitting Diode is used for the multi-information display located next to the speedometer. Vibrant white characters are sharply displayed on a high-contrast black background for ease of use and a luxurious appearance.

In addition to an Eco Driving indicator light, when in D (Drive), the RX350 features a new Eco driving indicator zone that displays current fuel economy using a bar graph and alerts you when you are achieving low fuel efficiency.

Lexus employed extensive human-machine interface (HMI) studies to enhance occupant’s interaction with all controls. To help reduce driver distraction and effort, each HMI function in the new RX wastes no movement. The available eight-inch navigation display (or seven-inch audio/HVAC display when navigation is not ordered) is placed at a higher, more distant position, providing a more natural visual angle that is also shaded from the sometimes harsh sunlight coming in.

Three innovations to come from the HMI studies include the multi-information switch on the steering wheel, the new Remote Touch console-mounted navigation controller and the available ‘Head’s-Up Display. The multi-information switch allows you to access numerous function settings with out taking hands off the steering wheel. It also reduced the number of individual switches, contributing to a cleaner instrument panel. Vehicle settings can be customized according to personal preference, including personal door-lock, interior/exterior light adjustments, driver’s seat easy exit, and window-closure setting preferences.

The new available navigation system on the RX350 can be controlled using either the Remote Touch device or by utilizing voice command. The Remote Touch allows you to operate the navigation system, climate, audio, phone controls and more. The screen menus are selected with the controller, eliminating the need to reach out or avert eyes from the road. Once I understood the way the system worked it was no problem changing the climate setting or audio selections.

This was also made possible with this unique controller with its ‘haptic’-feedback technology, which provides a tactile response to your hand. As you use the controller near a screen icon, the curser (arrow) is pulled to that icon with feedback from a servomotor in the device enabling you to feel it ‘click’ into place. You or your passenger make a selection by pressing the side thumb button on either side, and the feedback servo is adjustable for sensitivity. The system then confirms the action with a subtle sound. Remote Touch integrates the functions of seven hard switches used with the previous touch screen, helping you to operate those functions with minimal effort and distraction. I liked the system more than the large, round controller knob found in the BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz models.

The all-new RX350 is now available with a Heads-Up Display (HUD) utilizing white readouts. High-intensity LEDs project high-contrast white figures onto the windshield, which are easier to read-and easier on the eyes-than the typical green-colored readouts. The HUD offers displays for speed, navigation, and audio. A wedge-shaped windshield interlayer for the HUD projection area eliminates the distracting printed grid pattern seen on some other vehicle HUDs.

Luxury and attention to detail are a Lexus hallmark and the new RX350 is no exception. All RX models are equipped with the SmartAccess keyless entry with push button start/stop. As you approach the RX, interior and exterior courtesy lamps illuminate. Opening the door is by pulling out the door handle and the door magically opens, the instrument panel lighting gradually fades in. When the engine is started, the instrument gauge needles and marking illuminate, followed by the multi-information display. After you exit your RX, the lights fade out at different intervals.

All 2010 RX350′s are equipped with power tilt and telescoping steering columns. To ease entry and exit, the seat automatically slides two inches rearward and the steering wheel tilts upward and slides forward when the engine is switched off. Upon pushing the ‘ON’ button, the seat and steering wheel return to positions pre-set by you using the three-position memory system.

The newly designed, standard 10-way power front seats are shaped to accommodate arm movement when operating the available Remote Touch, while also holding you and you passengers in place. Both front seats are feature power lumbar adjustment. Also newly available on the RX is a ventilation function for the front seats to help improve comfort on hot and humid days. The shape and texture of the armrests and switches offer an ideal combination of tactile feel and functionality.

The leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel features integrated audio controls and a unique cross-section that is designed to provide a more natural grip than a conventional round-section wheel. A leather and wood trimmed wheel is also available for added luxury.

Three seat materials include standard fabric, optional smooth leather or even softer semi-aniline leather. Standard wood trim comes in Brown Walnut matched to Parchment, or Expresso Bird’s-eye Maple matched to gray and black.

The center console box provides enough space to comfortably store CDs/DVDs or your owner’s manual. Even with the owner’s manual, the console box still offers more than 0.75cu.ft. of storage capacity. The three-part (40/20/40) rear seats can be slid and reclined, and can be folded down using the one-touch levers mounted in the luggage compartment. Compact rear-seat headrests help improve your rear visibility. The new double-wishbone rear suspension, due to its compact packaging, yield a larger luggage compartment; the width between the suspension towers is increased by nearly six inches.

The new climate-control system offers quicker cooling and warming and is also quieter. A new high-efficiency compressor detects refrigerant flow in order to optimize engine control and fuel economy. The new system can cool the cabin to about two degrees lower and warm it by about five degrees higher than before. An available smog sensor is designed to detect harmful particles (CO, HC, NOx) in other vehicle’s exhaust emissions and automatically switch between fresh air and recirculation modes.

The new Lexus RX accommodates a variety of music sources, providing auxiliary and USB inputs, Bluetooth Audio wireless connectivity and standard XM satellite radio capability, which is also joined by XM NavTraffic and XM NavWeather. Standard voice recognition and Bluetooth technology allow phone calls to be made and received while driving. When an iPod is attached via the USB port, information such as names for the artist, track and album is displayed on the available navigation or audio screen. The large center console storage box easily accommodates a variety of electronic devices while keeping wires out of sight.

The RX continues the tradition of offering the Lexus Premium Audio system as standard equipment, in this case a powerful nine-speaker system with a six-disc changer. Creative placement and angling of the speakers perfectly cross-channels sound to the occupant on the opposite side of the vehicle to transform the cabin into a clear, crisp acoustic environment. A 12-speaker system comes with the optional navigation or rear seat entertainment systems and includes two-rear door tweeters and a compact L-shaped subwoofer in the rear luggage compartment.

The optional 15-speaker Mark Levinson Surround Sound system allows listeners to enjoy 7.1 channel surround sound. The system, a Lexus exclusive, features a center channel coaxial speaker, metal-cone midrange speakers, tweeters and a 100-watt amplified subwoofer. A 2.5in. speaker built into each D-pillar provides the right and left surround-sound channels. The diffusion of sound provides each occupant the same level of audio quality.

The available Hard Disc Drive (HDD) navigation system eliminates the need for DVD map discs and offers a unique voice recognition system, which can work using casual-language inputs on certain functions. An optional rear-seat entertainment system includes two high-definition seven-inch screens, one on each of the front seatbacks. Each screen can display video from separate sources. A remote control allows independent control of each screen. Rear seat occupants can also choose to listen to audio through the wireless headphones instead of vehicle speakers.

A brand new model, the Ford Edge ‘Sport’ arrives as the first factory-customized crossover, with class-exclusive 22-inch wheels, an eight-piece body kit for a sportier look, and a tuned independent suspension for better performance on the road.

With the auto industry in a steep downturn in vehicle sales because of the recession, the only bright spot is the decline in gas prices back into the low $2 per gallon range.

The lower gas prices from the $4.50+ per gallon range to the low $2.00 range has helped with crossover sales across the segment.

Just like the Ford Explorer was the sales leader in sport utility sales in the 1990′s through the early 2000′s, the Ford Edge crossover has taken over the sales lead in the growing crossover segment with its bold good looks, unibody construction, sedan-like ride, versatility, and higher-than-SUV gas mileage specs.

The 2009 Ford Edge lives up to Ford’s commitment to deliver more vehicles customers want to buy, and the big story for 2009 is the new Edge Sport model, aimed at customers who want a sportier look, edgier handling, and a more personalized vehicle.

The new Edge Sport rolls on available 22-inch polished aluminum wheels or the standard 20-inch premium painted wheels with branded hubs, both mounted on 40-series Pirelli Scorpion Zero tires to complete the look. This marks the first time a 22-inch wheel-and-tire combination has been offered on any crossover.

The Edge Sport’s 22-inch wheel/tire handling package elevates the already sporty Edge to a new level of handling and control. It feels at home on a road course or twisty mountain road, but still delivers a ride agreeable for even a daily driver.

High performance P265/40R22 inch Pirelli Scorpion Zero tires are mounted on massive 22X9-inch forged, polished aluminum wheels delivering a jaw-dropping stance. To get the most out of the wheel/tires handling package, Ford has revised its fully independent suspension with performance tuned shocks, springs, thicker anti-roll bars, and steering components to deliver stunning handling not found on any other crossover vehicle. Noise, vibration and harshness have been canceled out with the use of front and rear isolated subframes.

The sport model also shows its personality with an eight-piece, factory-installed body kit that includes a unique front air dam, side skirts, lower door caps and a rear skirt, all finished in body color, instead of the dark lower finish on other Edge models.

The front air dam comes with integrated fog lamps and a lower grille insert. Giving the Sport model an even more menacing look are smoked front and rear lamp lenses and 3-inch wide dual exhaust tips.

The sport model is available in four exterior colors: Black, Redfire, Brilliant Silver and a limited-run Sport Blue, that covered my test vehicle.

On the road you can really feel the difference with better road-holding capability, better traction, quicker acceleration with the wider tires and sport-tuned suspension, plus a better feel for the road with the performance steering gear.

Also new in 2009 is the latest version of SYNC which adds 911 Assist-with no monthly fees-to the industry-first system of voice-activated control and connectivity for mobile phones and MP3 players.

Also available for 2009 is the next generation navigation system with SIRIUS Travel Link, which gives drivers and passengers access to up-to-the-minute information and entertainment including coast-to-coast coverage of real-time traffic and weather reports; fuel options from more than 120,000 stations sorted by price and distance; major league pro and college sports as well as movie listing from more than 4,500 theaters.

Other new features include a new in-cabin ambient lighting package and such customer-friendly standard features such as passenger grab handles and a cargo management system with four hooks, two tie-downs, a cargo net and a universal garage door opener.

Edge’s optional panoramic Vista Roof opens up a whole world of possibilities. The large glass moon roof provides a grand view of the sky and a sense of freedom that accentuates Edge’s sporty nature. The roof features a large 27.3-inch by 29.4-inch forward panel that offers tilt and slide opening, and a 15.75-inch by 31.3-inch fixed rear glass panel. The oversized front panel provides open-air touring. Close the forward roof and the enormous skylights allow natural light to flood the cabin while protecting the cabin from the elements. Twin-power-operated cloth shades can be closed simultaneously to block 100% of ultra-violet rays.

Edge’s 3.5 liter V6 engine generates 265hp and 250lb.ft. of torque and features a strong, lightweight, die-cast aluminum block and lightweight 4-valves-per-cylinder heads for smooth operation at high rpms and up to 90% of the torque at low rpms. A 10.3:1 compression ratio and close-coupled catalysts help it meet stringent ultra-low emission vehicle II regulations.

The 6-speed automatic transmission uses a wide 6.04:1 gear ratio to deliver good fuel economy and performance. Short first and second gears provide impressive launch and acceleration, while the tall overdrive gears deliver 7% better fuel economy than a 4-speed automatic.

Edge’s optional intelligent all-wheel-drive system was tuned with an emphasis on performance while offering confident all-weather driving. By constantly monitoring and predicting traction, the system delivers torque to all four wheels, even before the wheels begin to slip. An active on-demand coupler can deliver the precise amount of torque to the rear wheels. Paired with the optional AdvanceTrac traction control, intelligent AWD can transfer torque front to rear and side to side.

Edge’s well-rounded, modern performance extends to impressive refinement, enhancing the driving experience. In fact, testing has proven that the Edge’s interior is quieter than the Lexus RX350.

Edge’s modern design flows into the interior, evident in the instrument panel and distinctive center stack. The center stack design incorporates two-9-inch by 2-inch vertical vents that bracket the audio and climate control switches. Optional leather seating surfaces feature contrast stitching inspired by the fashion industry.

Edge is also designed to fit the customer’s need for style as well as cargo space and adaptability. The large center console uses a removable divider and tray to organize the space both vertically and horizontally for secure storage of everything from a laptop computer to coins and MP3 players. The Edge has four power points, three within the driver’s reach, along with a MP3 audio jack. Small slots molded into the side of the console keep phone and MP3 cords neat and organized. The console lid has a ticket slip, two penholders and a tissue holder.

Edge comfortably seats five, offering available six-way power, heated, adjustable front seats and adult headroom and legroom for the second row. The reclining 60/40-split second-row seats fold to provide a level load floor for carrying equipment in the large cargo area. Edge can transport items as long as 8-feet with the available fold-flat front passenger seat. Each rear seat can be folded manually using an industry-first single-hand release or automatically with an optional EasyFold electro-mechanical remote release accessible from the cargo area.

My nicely loaded Edge Sport model came with these features not mentioned above- new dual power side mirrors with convex blind-spot mirrors integrated onto each mirror, keyless entry, thickly bolstered front bucket seats, AC, powerful Audiophile AM-FM in-dash CD/MP3/Satellite Radio, with auxiliary jack and nine speakers, message center with compass, 6-way power driver’s seat, a unique brushed aluminum center stack with the same Sport logo stenciled throughout the aluminum bezel in smaller lettering, leather-wrapped/tilting/telescoping steering wheel with cruise-control/audio buttons, ambient lighting, floor mats, privacy glass, heated backlight, overhead console with dual map lamps/sunglass holder, variable intermittent wipers/washers, two-speed rear wiper/washer, cargo area light, dual, lighted vanity mirrors, auto-dimming rearview mirror, trip computer, leather-wrapped shift knob, aluminum instrument panel finish, power windows/door locks, and reverse sensing system.

Lincoln refines its award-winning MKX Crossover for 2009 with more innovations including available voice-activated navigation with industry exclusive SIRIUS Travel Link, standard power liftgate, and important customer conveniences like a front passenger grab handle, cargo compartment hooks, cargo net and universal garage door opener.

The 2009 Lincoln MKX is strength and elegance perfectly blended in a refined yet dynamic design. The MKX’s confident exterior and luxurious, quiet interior underscore the direction of Lincoln’s modern design. The high beltline is defined by a stroke of chromed trim that caps broad shoulders, pronounced wheel lips and short overhangs that give the MKX its wide, athletic stance. Standard chrome door handles and chromed caps on each side-view mirror add a dramatic finishing touch. Black rocker panels plant the vehicle to the ground, accentuating the standard 18in. wheels and tires. You can choose 20in. chrome-clad aluminum wheels for an added touch of upscale flair. Side marker light cut into the simple, clean fascia and bend around to the side of the vehicle. Chrome-ringed fog lamps are integrated into the lower fascia and echo the chrome-lipped dual exhausts. Distinctive lighting is a hallmark of modern Lincoln design, offering the perfect balance of art and functionality. An available adaptive front lighting system consists of motor-driven halogen low beams based on steering wheel input that swivel around curves. When cornering, the headlamps can illuminate a stretch of road up to 36 feet longer than conventional headlights.

Functional elegance is also the theme for the MKX’s liftgate lighting. The system uses 16 light-emitting diodes, eight outboard and eight inboard, flanking the Lincoln star. The result is an edge-to-edge band of illumination across the width of the liftgate.

Since its debut as a 2007 model, the Lincoln MKX has defined Lincoln’s presence in the fastest-growing premium crossover segment with its elegant exterior design, award-winning interior and third-party recognition for safety, quality and technology.

With features like 265hp 3.5 liter V8 mated to the smooth shifting six-speed automatic transmission, available all-wheel-drive, standard heated and cooled front seats and available heated rear seats, the MKX is poised to meet the demands of discriminating consumers.

Technological advances on the MKX include an available VistaRoof and standard AdvanceTrac with RSC (roll stability control, and solid unibody construction that have helped MKX earn a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Another factor that makes the MKX unique is that it provides luxury crossover consumers even more of what they expect from a luxury crossover with more industry-first innovations plus four special edition packages and a host of new standard features.

They include SYNC-the industry-exclusive, voice-activated, hands-free, in-car communications and entertainment system that adds new features for 2009, such as 911 Assist, which can directly contact 911 emergency personnel to dispatch help in the event of an airbag deployment or fuel shut-off. The 911 Assist feature allows call to be placed directly to a local 911 operator, eliminating the need to go through a call center operator first. There is no additional monthly fee for this feature since, when set up, it uses a customer’s existing mobile phone. Also coming to the upgraded SYNC system will be the Vehicle Health Report (VHR) function, which allows customers to monitor more than two dozen vehicle systems, receive maintenance reports in simple, user-friendly language and, when appropriate, schedule service online. Reports can also be printed or e-mailed as necessary.

Voice-activated navigation with SIRIUS Travel Link-Lincoln moves in-car connectivity forward with the available next-generation navigation system, available for the first time ever with SIRIUS Travel Link. This offers drivers and passengers access to up-to-the-minute information and entertainment content through the vehicle’s navigation system. Working through the standard feature SIRIUS satellite radio network, Travel Link offers, coast-to-coast coverage of real-time traffic data, weather reports (both current and five-day forecasts with storm information and even ski resort conditions), fuel options from more than 120,000 stations sorted by price or distance, major league pro and college sports as well as movie listings from more than 4,500 theaters. A six-month introductory subscription to SIRIUS Travel Link and SIRIUS satellite radio are included at no cost.

Lincoln MKX special packages-new for 2009, the Limited Edition offers a chrome grille on four colors-brilliant silver, vivid red, white platinum tri-coat and black charcoal. Both Limited Edition and Monochromatic Limited Edition packages offer 20in. chrome-clad wheels, fineline ebony wood interior accents, premium leather trimmed seats in charcoal black with medium light stone inserts and piping plus unique badging. Lincoln Star logos stitched on the first-row head restraints and headlamp lenses that are etched with the Lincoln Star for a unique effect.

In addition, the Ultimate Package for 2009, available on both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive models, features 18in. eight-spoke chrome-clad wheels, adaptive lighting, the new ambient interior lighting feature, EasyFold second-row remote seat release, premium leather trimmed seating with contrast piping and a below-floor cargo management system. Also available on the Ultimate Package is the Ebony Interior Package, which includes premium leather trimmed seats in charcoal black with charcoal black piping and fineline ebony wood appliqués on the instrument panel, front and rear door trim and steering wheel.

Additional standard features on the MKX include power lumbar driver and front passenger seats, easy entry driver’s seat, memory driver’s seat and side mirrors, auto-dimming driver’s-side mirror and Reverse Sensing System.

The new Lincoln MKX has thought of everything to make your next trip more enjoyable, more comfortable, more focused and safer.

Lincoln’s modern identity is evident in Lincoln’s comfortable, elegant interior, which includes a new all-black and ebony combination for 2009.

Lincoln MKX boasts the quietest Lincoln interior yet. In addition to conventional sound-absorbing techniques such as a thick dash pad, laminated windshield and thick side glass, MKX blends unique materials to reduce road noise in the cabin. A constrained-layer barrier is fused to the rear wheelhouses, and sound-deadening material is welded behind the exterior trim panels.

The interior design is defined by a sweeping instrument panel flowing into a clean, well-organized center stack. Wood and bright nickel accents are carried to the door panels. Interior controls are bathed in Lincoln’s cool-white light for a pleasing nighttime cabin experience. For 2009, a new available ambient interior lighting package offers seven lighting color options to illuminate the footwells and cupholders.

Removable dividers in the center console let customers adapt storage space for anything from laptop computers to handbags and CDs. The center console also features a concealed power point-for a total of four throughout the interior-and an MP3 audio jack. Phone and MP3 player cords can be neatly organized, and a slot molded into the console provides power-point access. All dials, buttons and switches are within easy reach and fully illuminated for safe nighttime driving. Visibility forward, side and rear is excellent.

The interior is surprisingly spacious, defying its sleek exterior shape. Front seats have 10-way power adjustments including power lumbar for both driver and front passenger, along with standard heated and cooled features. The second row is sure to make all occupants comfortable with available heated seats, as well as ample headroom and legroom. A pull-down center panel contains dual cupholders and storage. Behind the center console are dual vents to bring heated or cool air more directly into the rear.

In addition, the 60/40-split second row features impressive reclining angles of up to

15-degrees. It also fold in one fluid motion, either by the seat-mounted lever or a unique available EasyFold remote switch accessible from the liftgate. Linocln MKX offers 68.7cu.ft. of cargo volume with the rear seats folded.

As drivers face more congested roads, MKX’s available all-glass Vista Roof brings stress relief through its unique outward view and open-air freedom. The Vista Roof features a large 27.3in. by 29.4in. forward sunroof with a one-touch-open switch for vent and tilt-and-slide operations. Dual power sunshades operate concurrently when you want to block out glare. Meanwhile, the fixed 15.75in. by 31.3in. rear moon roof gives rear seat viewers an outside view too. Both front windows features express, one-touch up/down.

The 2009 MKX offers the industry’s first, and only, THXII certified audio system designed by THX, a California company renowned for its movie theater systems.

The system uses the latest THX technologies to bring the home theater surround sound experience to the open road. The system uses a 12-channel amplifier to deliver 600-watts of power to a total of 12 speakers, including two subwoofers, strategically placed in the cabin.

For 2009 the next-generation navigation system includes the THXII system that also features a fast-loading six-disc changer that reads CDs in normal audio, MP3 compressed or text formats. The AM-FM tuner is compatible with the Radio Data Broadcasting System (RDBS) and displays participating radio station call letters, formats and song titles. The MKX also features an integrated MP3-audio input jack and power point conveniently concealed in the center console.

Powered by a 3.5 liter DOHC V6 engine making 265hp and mated to a smooth shifting 6-speed automatic transmission, MKX is Lincoln’s best example yet of easy and fun-to-drive performance thanks to its wide stance, four-wheel independent suspension and the brand’s well-honed driving DNA.

Lincoln MKX’s unibody construction provides a strong foundation for the four-wheel independent suspension. The MacPherson-strut front suspension also features L-shaped lower control arms, a stabilizer bar and is mounted to an isolated subframe that uses hydro-bushings to reduce unwanted steering wheel vibration and a minimum of noise or harshness.

A four-link independent rear suspension uses stamped steel control blades, monotube shocks integrated knuckles, and lateral links for precise suspension tuning and control at high-speeds on the open road or when cornering. The rear shocks are mounted outboard and behind the wheel center to further enhance ride and handling. The rear suspension is also mounted to an isolated subframe for less noise, vibration and harshness.

Lincoln MKX comes standard with four-wheel disc brakes and ABS.

The available intelligent all-wheel-drive system is tuned with an emphasis on luxury performance and confident all-weather driving. The system actively and seamlessly delivers torque to all four wheels, even before wheel slippage occurs. An active on-demand coupler delivers the precise amount of torque needed to the rear wheels. Paired with available traction control, intelligent AWD can transfer torque front-to-rear and side-to-side. The advanced 6-speed automatic uses a wide 6.04:1 gear ratio, along with multiple clutches for smooth, refined shifts.

Standard features not mentioned above include power locks, auto-dimming rearview mirror, remote keyless entry, two-speed rear wipers, privacy glass, heated, dual power mirrors with memory, dual electronic climate control, overhead console, dual lighted vanity mirrors, premium AM-FM stereo/clock/CD/MP3 with 6-speakers, floor mats, manual tilt/telescoping leather wrapped/wood steering wheel with cruise control/audio control buttons, active anti-theft system perimeter anti-theft alarm, tire pressure monitoring system, and universal garage door opener.

Standard safety features include AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control, Ford’s Personal Safety System which includes dual-stage driver and front passenger airbags, safety belt pretensioners/load limiters, Ford’s exclusive Safety Canopy Side Curtain Airbags for front and second rows, and Ford’s Beltminder for front seat occupants.

With a base price of just $36,700 and a fully loaded MKX coming in at just $40,000.00, the MKX is one of the best bargains in the premium luxury crossover segment.

You get great contemporary styling, plenty of power and superb performance, comfort, luxury, cutting-edge high-technology features, and the latest safety systems to make your drive fun, easy and memorable. I thoroughly enjoyed my seven day test drive behind the wheel of the new 2009 Lincoln MKX.

BMW’s ///M – Motorsport cars are truly remarkable and respected marks in automotive culture. Mostly everyone knows what the M represents when it describes a BMW model no matter the year. Ever since the E30 BMW M3 many enthusiasts have only dreamed of owning such a well balanced, practical and excellent performing vehicle. Even the BMW M5 pushed around the idea of toting around 5 people in one hi-performance vehicle and now it seems you can toss your extra luggage and your friends/family in some of the best performing SUV’s on the road today, the BMW X5M and BMW X6M.

4.4-liter V8 with 555hp and 500 lb-ft. of torque routed through a 6-speed automatic transmission. 15.6 inch brake rotors up front and 15.2 inch in the rear. 315/35R20 rear tires and 275/40R20′s in the front. 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds. Sounds like the next performance motorsports coupe from BMW? Ahh no, it’s the stats from the newest M-tuned SUV’s from BMW oddly enough. Bottom line, BMW is not playing around anymore. The 2010 BMW X5M and X6M are the fastest SUV’s you can buy new from a dealership right now.

The new twin turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 is truly remarkable. Innovative design and advanced technology at its best. I welcome you to marvel at the images of this new engine and top-mounted exhaust manifold. You just do not see this everyday!

At one time BMW, among other automakers, promised not to make turbo vehicles let alone M-motorsport performance SUV’s. So who is this car made or marketed for? Anyone! Well, not really. Ever seen the Mercedes Benz ML65 AMG, Chevy Trailblazer SS, Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, Porsche Cayenne Turbo and maybe an Infiniti FX50 being driven by a soccer mom? Oh yea, you see it all the time so it is obviously a market for the “performance SUV” if there was ever such an oxymoron. It is more of a status symbol for some as if the soccer mom is really going to be doing 150mph on public roads in America. Some people just prefer the “top-of-the-line” and in many cases it just so happens to be the better performing vehicle that is just plain over-kill for anything they will ever use it for. Seriously, the SUV has been a major over-kill vehicle ever since its introduction for most families.

Press Release

THE NEXT CHAPTER IN THE STORIED HISTORY OF BMW M

All-New BMW X6 M and BMW X5 M Make World Debuts in 2009

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – April 5, 2009… The modern, sustainable legacy of BMW M GmbH began in 1985 when engineers placed the snarling, race-bred inline-6 engine from the M1 supercar into the production BMW 5 Series sedan, reworked the suspension and brakes, and created the first M5. Through this industry-first combination of attributes, the M5 redefined the capabilities of a sedan with levels of power, precision, balance, and linear control never before imaginable. Since then, finding new ways to expand the boundaries of what is possible with existing BMW models has been the singular purpose of the craftsmen at BMW M. Now the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M are the first all-wheel-drive models to offer the remarkable performance, dynamic driving experience, athletic design, and premium quality of a BMW M product.

Both models are powered by a newly-developed 4.4-liter V8 M engine delivering 555 hp at 6,000 rpm and 500 lb-ft of torque from 1500 to 5,650 rpm. This new M engine is the world’s first with a pulse-tuned exhaust manifold encompassing both rows of cylinders combined with high-performance twin-scroll twin turbo technology.

For the X5 M and X6 M, engineers at BMW M pushed the capabilities of BMW’s intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system and the Dynamic Performance Control system to manage the power and performance potential of these two new vehicles. The special M suspension includes Adaptive Drive and newly-developed Servotronic power steering. These features combine to push the limits of what was previously possible with a sports-oriented vehicle, and guarantee driving behavior characteristic of a BMW M product: incredible stability and precisely controlled steering qualities abound throughout the performance envelope.

The BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M set new standards of acceleration, lateral grip, steering response, balance, and stopping power among high-performance activity vehicles. Both models accelerate to 60 mph from a standstill in 4.5 seconds and feature impres¬sive delivery of power from the V8 twin-turbo engine which provides maximum torque of 500 lb-ft from 1,500 and 5,650 rpm. From a handling standpoint, both vehicles are notable for superb balance through careful tuning of xDrive, Dynamic Performance Control, and Dynamic Stability Control with M Dynamic Mode for linear buildup of cornering forces. These capabilities place the performance of the X5 M and X6 M on par with the performance of other recent BMW M vehicles.

The athletic character and amazing performance abilities of the BMW X5 M and X6 M result from levels of development never before applied to this type of vehicle. As it did when creating the original M5, BMW M has once again shown that applying new technologies and innovations to a solid BMW production vehicle type will produce startling performance and an exhilarating drive. Both of these new models offer capabilities and dynamic driving experiences which are quite unique, and promise to provide thrills from everyday traffic to the race track.

Exterior Design: BMW M heritage reflecting function, purpose, and style.
The outstanding potential of both models is communicated clearly in their looks and design, their performance-bred heritage presented convincingly by the common design of the front end with its large air intakes.

The hood, front air dam, and headlights are virtually identical on the BMW X5 M and X6 M. Both models feature special gills in the front fenders, as well as model-specific 20-inch light-alloy wheels. The signs of distinction of BMW M are presented in individual style at the rear, confirming the athletic character of each model. The rear diffuser on each model communicates a particularly powerful presence, and the quad tailpipes of the exhaust system are again a signature of BMW M’s masterful work.

Compared with the standard BMW X5 and BMW X6, the body-color surface area on the side skirts are designed to place greater emphasis on their road-going orientations. On both models the body designs fulfill major functions in terms of aerodynamics and the carefully controlled flow of cooling air.

The first modern turbocharged M engine: twin scroll twin turbo technology with a patented exhaust manifold.
Using BMW’s innovative, 4.4L reverse-flow V8 engine with High Precision Direct Injection and twin turbochargers as a basis, the new M engine introduces twin-scroll twin turbochargers and patented exhaust manifold technologies to achieve outstanding thrust and pulling force, while preserving the most compact dimensions possible. Two low-mass twin-scroll turbochargers are positioned together with the catalytic converters in the “V” section between the two banks of cylinders. By reversing the flow of gases through the engine from traditional arrangements, the intake and exhaust ducts are shortened and widened. The result is that pressure losses on the exhaust side are minimized.

The goals: virtually eliminate turbocharger lag while maximizing combustion efficiency and power output. Tremendous power and performance are delivered by the engine in the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M through a new design and construction principle. The new M V8 engine with twin-scroll twin turbo technology uses a single exhaust manifold with tuned-length runners, incorporating both cylinder banks and connecting cylinders in carefully-selected pairs. This configuration, patented by BMW M and known as Cylinder-bank Comprehensive Manifold (CCM), offers lightning-quick response, a linear build-up of engine power, and a broad, consistent torque curve by feeding each of the twin turbochargers with a “charge pulse” at approximately every 90 degrees of crankshaft rotation, rather than the more traditional “irregular schedule” of charging.

The managed flow of exhaust gas provided by the CCM ensures high-velocity flow of combustion gases. The appropriate separation of exhaust gas flow from different cylinders is maintained until the gas reaches the turbine wheel, spooling the two twin-scroll turbochargers without back-pressure. With maximum boost pressure of 1.5 bar (21 psi), the use of twin-scroll twin turbo technology and the CCM exhaust manifold allows complete exploitation of the benefits of turbocharging.

Immediate response and remarkable thrust characterize the new V8 twin-turbocharged engine from BMW M GmbH. The impressive onset of power is accompanied by unique, engaging engine sounds that accentuate the quick-revving characte¬ristics with the dynamic acoustic effect typical of a BMW M product. The sounds are always civilized, but transform from relatively calm to extraordinarily intense as the boost and revs build from idle. Reflecting the tremendous power of the engine, the turbocharged M V8 is equipped with an advanced cooling system developed specifically for the two new models. One notable feature in this context is the presence of two high-capacity water-to-air intercoolers which consistently optimize performance under the most demanding driving conditions. An aluminum oil sump exclusive to BMW M with a special finned surface guarantees optimum cooling at all times even under an extremely demanding style of driving.

The turbocharged M V8 engine develops its outstanding power with remarkable efficiency. In addition to BMW’s High Precision Direct Injection, both the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M are equipped with a range of technologies from BMW’s EfficientDynamics engineering strategy. These include on-demand control of the electric fuel pump, an on-demand compressor for the air conditioner, and a flow-controlled supply of hydraulic fluid to the Active Roll Stabilization system. By operating these features specifically on demand, energy waste is minimized. The engine fulfills the requirements of the US LEV II standard as well as the EU5 requirements in Europe.

M Sports Automatic and M shift paddles on the steering wheel.
Featured for the first time on a BMW M model, the 6-speed M Sports Automatic transmission enhances the high-performance character of the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M through its instantaneous response, direct connection to the engine, and a high degree of shifting comfort. The new M Sports Automatic is commanded by an electronic selector on the center console and offers the driver not only the Drive mode, but also Sport and M Manual modes for absolute control of gear selection.

Aluminum pull-style paddles on the steering wheel exclusive to BMW M allow manual shifting (Right for upshifts, Left for downshifts). Upshifts occur significantly quicker than in the past thanks to new technology that reduces torque in the transmission through momentary deactivation of individual cylinders. This significantly enhances the athletic character of the vehicle. In the M Manual mode, each chosen gear is held up to redline in order to give the driver perfect throttle-steering control of the vehicle under the most demanding driving conditions. The transmission does not upshift or downshift automati¬cally in this mode. A further option in the M Manual mode is to activate the Launch Control feature, which enables the driver to accelerate from a standstill with maximum performance. To activate Launch Control, the driver stops the vehicle, moves the gear selector into the M/S position and activates the Sports Power mode, as well as the M Dynamic mode, or respectively, the DSC-Off mode. Then, with the transmission in stage M1, the driver presses down the brake pedal and moves the accelerator to at least 60% throttle, setting Launch Control to standby. Standby status is confirmed by “starter’s flag” symbol in the instrument cluster. As soon as the driver releases the brake pedal, the vehicle will accelerate with full power in “genuine racing style.” In the process, the M Sports Automatic transmission automatically upshifts at the ideal points, with the fastest possible shifts and optimum wheelspin control. The driver may terminate the Launch Control process at any time by reducing the throttle position.

BMW xDrive and Dynamic Performance Control with a special M setup for optimum dynamics.
The outstanding success of BMW’s intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive technology is based on quick, electronically-controlled power distribution to the front and rear axles. When combined with the superb, near 50-50 static weight distribution of any BMW, xDrive can prevent the tendency for the vehicle to oversteer and understeer as long as possible, reducing the need for Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) to provide electronic assistance.

BMW’s Dynamic Performance Control was presented for the first time in the BMW X6 and is now featured in the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M. Put succinctly, Dynamic Performance Control enhances driving stability in demanding situations and is thus perfectly suited to a powerful M vehicle. Vectoring of torque between the right and left rear wheels (both on throttle and off) significantly improves steering precision and tracking stability at all speeds, with DSC being required to stabilize the vehicle only under extreme lateral acceleration. Ultimately this offers the driver an unparalleled standard of perfor¬mance, agility, balance, and traction, and re-establishes the benchmarks in drivetrain and suspension technology for all types of performance-oriented vehicles.

In the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M the potentials of both xDrive and Dynamic Performance Control are maximized by BMW M, with the driver able to activate the M Dynamic Mode (MDM) with the DSC button on the center console or the steering wheel-mounted M Button. This mode raises DSC thresholds of intervention and ensures throttle-steering behavior typical of BMW M by shifting the xDrive bias more to the rear and involving the Dynamic Performance Control in the process. A pictogram in the Control Display in the instrument cluster allows the driver to monitor the activity of Dynamic Performance Control and xDrive through a clear visual depiction, which shows the driver how much power is being distributed to each wheel.

As a result, M Dynamic Mode allows maximum speeds in bends and on winding roads with the DSC system intervening only when the vehicle reaches the absolute physical limits of grip. Even under maximum load in the apex of a bend, the vehicle follows steering inputs with tremendous precision, giving the driver very high speeds when exiting a turn in the interest of optimum performance. Last but not least, DSC may be completely deactivated by experienced drivers at the touch of a button.

Beyond the stabilizing effects of Dynamic Stability Control provided by individual brake activation and engine power reduction under extreme conditions, DSC in the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M includes a wide range of additional features tuned to BMW M standards to promote safe and exciting driving. These include ABS anti-lock brakes, Trailer Stability Control, Hill Descent Control, Dynamic Brake Control which maximizes brake force when required, Cornering Brake Control for advanced trail-braking, Brake Fade Compensation for extreme driving conditions, automatic Brake Drying when the windshield wipers are activated, Start-Off Assistant for driving on steep hills, and a braking function for use by the standard cruise control.

Both vehicles come with an electrohydraulic parking brake which features the Autohold (Auto H) function. Auto H is a convenience feature that holds the vehicle in position as soon as it comes to a stop at an intersection or in stop-and-go traffic, without requiring the driver to hold constant pressure on the brake pedal. As soon as the driver touches the accelerator again, the brake is instantly released.

M Suspension with standard Adaptive Drive.
The suspension developed specifically for the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M with its double-wishbone front control arms and integral four-link rear axle offers M-specific geometry and damping. This is accomplished through optimized control arm and A-arm bushings at the front, as well as stiffer axle support mounts at the rear.

As part of the advanced Integrated Chassis Management system which networks all drivetrain and suspension components, both models feature standard self-leveling rear air suspension and Adaptive Drive with Electronic Damping Control (EDC) and Active Roll Stabilization (ARS). The special version of Adaptive Drive tailored to the requirements of BMW M lowers the entire vehicle by 10 millimeters or 0.4″ versus the standard BMW X5 and BMW X6.

To quickly and reliably process data, Adaptive Drive uses the high-speed FlexRay data transmission protocol. FlexRay enables Adaptive Drive to transfer data through the vehicle’s on-board network at an extremely fast rate. This enables lightning-quick changes to settings for individual shock absorbers, swaybars, and other components as conditions and driving demands warrant. For example, if the front wheel encounters a bump, the system responds quickly enough before the rear wheel reaches the same bump. On the X5, X6, and 7 Series, BMW is the first carmaker in the world to use FlexRay as a regular technology.

The special Servotronic steering developed for the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M provides variable steering assistance geared to the road speed of the vehicle. This allows the driver to negotiate parking maneuvers with lower effort while preserving exact feedback and the highest standard of steering precision at higher speeds.

The degree of power steering assistance is defined by two control maps. Apart from the standard configuration, the driver is able, through the Adaptive Drive button or the M Drive button on the steering wheel, to call up the Sport Mode. This activates a sports driving control map with higher control forces for particularly dynamic driving conditions.

When changing from Normal to Sport Mode, the system alters not only the Servotronic steering control map, but also the damper setting, with the shock absorbers of the vehicle being significantly stiffened in Sport Mode. In conjunction with Active Roll Stabilization, this allows an exceptionally high standard of linear lateral forces in dynamic bends and on fast, winding roads, and keeps body roll to a minimum.

M Brakes and tires to match the M Power.
Outstanding stopping power with fade reduced to a minimum is guaranteed by the high-performance M brake system, which combines giant four-piston fixed calipers at the front with floating calipers at the rear, combined in each case with large, internally-vented lightweight brake discs. The brake rotors themselves measure 15.6” in diameter at front and 15.2” at rear. They feature a riveted connection to join the aluminum rotor hats with the cast-iron rotor discs.

The BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M are the only vehicles of their type equipped with staggered-size tires front and rear, running on 20-inch light-alloy wheels. The choice of runflat tires in sizes 275/40 R 20 at the front and 315/35 R 20 at the rear is a result of the special setup of both models, with the emphasis on rear-wheel power and dynamic handling balance. This promotes exceptionally good transmission of power to the rear axle and precise, razor-sharp steering behavior of both models. Transitional stability is also world-class.

Maximum performance at the touch of a button: M Drive button on the steering wheel.
In addition to the DSC mode (On, MDM, or Off) and the specific setup of the shock absorbers and Servotronic steering, the driver may also configure the setup of the drivetrain on the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M. Acti¬vating the Power mode influences both engine and transmission behavior, and the driver can choose from the Sport and Efficiency driving programs. The Sport program allows precise control of engine power under the most dynamic driving conditions, and ensures a linear build-up of the power delivery. The Efficiency program, in turn, upshifts at earlier points not only to significantly reduce fuel consumption under normal driving conditions, but also to allow a relaxed style of driving by taking advantage of the new M engine’s prodigious torque and power available from low engine speeds. The result, therefore, is an ideal combination of flexibility for daily use and all-out performance when desired.

When customizing the response of the steering wheel-mounted M Drive button, the driver uses the M Drive menu to preselect the desired Power Mode and the setup of DSC and EDC, making a personalized combination of settings that can be activated on-demand. The driver’s favorite setup settings are saved and subsequently activated at any time simply by pressing the M Drive button on the steering wheel. Pressing the M Drive button again returns the vehicle to its previous configuration.

M-specific cockpit and sophisticated driver assistance systems for even greater ability at the wheel.
The BMW M philosophy naturally continues into the design and configuration of the driver’s “office.” Both of these all-wheel-drive high-performance sports vehicles come with a special M cockpit with the instrument cluster featuring a variable redline, specific vehicle function displays, and white display backlighting. Both the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M feature power, heated front M sport seats, an M sport leather steering wheel, M door sills, and driver’s footrest.

Infotainment functions, standard on-board Navigation with Real-Time Traffic data and communication functions are all controlled by BMW’s 4th-generation iDrive. The standard HiFi audio system features 12 loudspeakers and a 230 watt amplifier. In addition, both the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M may be equipped with a Head-Up Display programmed specifically by BMW M. This option enables the driver to customize the type and scope of data projected onto the windshield through settings available in the M Drive menu.

Innovative driver assistance systems are fitted as well, with both models featuring standard Dynamic Cruise Control, Rain Sensor, Auto-Dimming Mirrors, Park Distance Control, and BMW’s Xenon Adaptive Headlights. The list of optional features includes a Driver Assistance Package which includes High-Beam Assistant, Head-Up Display, and Rear View Camera with the spectacular new Top View feature. Top View provides the driver with an “birds-eye view” of the vehicle on the iDrive control screen, using input from a camera on each side of the vehicle and the traditional rear-view camera. Top View provides the driver with additional confidence for tight parking scenarios.

Stable bodyshell and advanced safety equipment.
The BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M come with extremely stiff bodyshells. To ensure maximum solidity, BMW’s body engineers focused on the use of intelligent lightweight materials technology. Both the choice of materials and the arrangement and geometry of the support bars, braces, and mounts on both models are based on an overall concept that combines maximum crash safety with supreme agility – which helps avoid crashes in the first place. At BMW, the ability to avoid a crash is the best safety feature of all.

Forces acting on the unibody in the event of a crash are diverted through the engine carriers and the chassis along several load paths in order to avoid extreme loads acting on individual structures and help keep impact energy away from the stable passenger cell.
Both the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M come with frontal and hip/thorax airbags, as well as curtain head airbags to protect the occupants both front and rear from injury. Three-point inertia-reel seatbelts are at all seating positions with force limiters and, on the front seats, an additional seatbelt pretensioning function. To help protect occupants from cervical spine injury in the event of a rear impact, the front seats feature crash-activated active head restraints. ISOFIX child seat anchors are standard on the rear seats.

All restraint systems are controlled by the vehicles’ central safety electronics, which take the type and severity of a collision into account so that the most effective safety elements are activated in any given crash. The frontal airbags feature two-stage activation, to allow deployment in varying intensity as a function of crash severity. Networked with Dynamic Stability Control, the standard rollover sensors activate both the curtain airbags and the seatbelt pretensioners, to ensure occupants are best positioned for and protected from the unlikely event of a vehicle rollover.
