Ford F-150 Transmission Downshift Investigation Becomes Major Recall Covering Nearly 1.4 Million Trucks

What started as a closely watched federal investigation has now become a full-scale recall, and it is a big one for Ford. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has upgraded the probe into a recall covering 1,392,935 Ford F-150 pickups from the 2015 through 2017 model years equipped with the 6R80 automatic transmission. The core issue remains the same one that first raised alarms: a signal loss tied to the transmission system that can trigger an unexpected multi-gear downshift, with the potential to momentarily lock the rear wheels and increase the risk of a crash.

For anyone who has been following this story on Automotive Addicts, this development will sound familiar. As we covered in our earlier posts on the initial NHTSA investigation and the later probe update, regulators had already been digging into reports of sudden downshifts, abrupt deceleration, and rear-wheel lockup in a large number of F-150s. At the time, the concern centered on how degraded electrical connections in the lead frame could affect sensor signals and create erratic transmission behavior. Now, that concern has clearly grown beyond an investigation and into something serious enough to warrant a formal recall.

According to the latest recall details, the problem involves the Transmission Range Sensor, which can lose signal because of those deteriorating electrical connections. When that happens, the transmission may unexpectedly downshift into second gear. In the wrong situation, especially at speed, that kind of sudden mechanical drag can unsettle the truck fast. NHTSA’s earlier findings already suggested the issue was more than theoretical, and the updated recall documents show Ford was aware of hundreds of warranty claims, field reports, customer service reports, and owner questionnaires tied to the problem. The automaker has also acknowledged two injuries and one accident that may be related.

The remedy, at least for now, appears relatively straightforward compared to the scale of the recall. Ford says owners will begin receiving notifications in late April, while the official fix is expected to be ready in July. Dealers will update the Powertrain Control Module calibration, and in certain cases the lead frame will also be replaced. That software-first approach suggests Ford believes improved control logic can better identify or manage the faulty signal before it leads to a dangerous downshift event, though some trucks may still need hardware attention depending on the circumstances.

This recall is also a reminder of how issues that begin as scattered owner complaints can eventually build into a much larger safety story. The Ford F-150 is one of the most important vehicles on the road, and when a defect affects nearly 1.4 million trucks, the ripple effect is enormous. Owners of 2015 to 2017 F-150 models with the 6R80 transmission should keep a close eye on their mailboxes and check their VINs as soon as recall tools are updated. As we have pointed out in our previous Automotive Addicts coverage, this was never a minor drivability annoyance. It was a potentially dangerous transmission behavior, and now it has officially crossed into recall territory.
