Volvo has unveiled the all-new EX30, which marks the brand’s entry into the subcompact electric SUV segment. With its blend of performance, style, luxury, safety, and value for money, the EX30 aims to be a well-rounded vehicle.
As Volvo’s smallest-ever SUV, the EX30 comes in two versions: the Single Motor Extended Range and the Twin Motor Performance derivative. Both models feature a 69 kWh battery, providing an estimated range of up to 275 miles for the single-motor variant and 265 miles for the dual-motor model. The single-motor variant delivers 268 horsepower and 253 lb-ft of torque, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds. On the other hand, the Twin Motor model boasts 422 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, allowing it to achieve a blistering 0-60 mph time of 3.4 seconds, making it the fastest-accelerating Volvo ever.
With a starting price of $34,950, the EX30 aims to offer a compelling value proposition in the electric SUV market. Additionally, the vehicle features distinctive design elements inspired by the larger EX90, including pixelated Thor’s Hammer headlights, a grille-less fascia, and a unique rear-end design with split taillight clusters.
Inside the EX30, despite its compact dimensions, Volvo has managed to create a spacious and minimalistic cabin. The rear seats provide ample headroom and legroom, while the center console offers innovative storage options. The interior design is available in four themes, accompanied by ambient lighting and soundscapes inspired by Scandinavian landscapes.
The EX30 incorporates advanced technology to enhance safety and connectivity. It features a door-opening alert system, a new generation of Park Pilot Assist for various parking scenarios, and an array of safety features, including a strengthened safety cell and a far-side airbag. Infotainment-wise, the vehicle relies on Google built-in and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Cockpit Platform, offering wireless Apple CarPlay and over-the-air update functionality.
One of the EX30’s standout attributes is its affordability. Priced competitively at $34,950, it boasts the lowest carbon footprint among all Volvo vehicles. With its impressive range and charging capabilities, the EX30 aims to reduce running costs for owners. While direct competitors are scarce, it outperforms the Mazda MX-30 in terms of range while being within a similar price range.
Volvo’s CEO, Jim Rowan, expressed excitement about the EX30, emphasizing its significance in expanding the accessibility of premium, fully electric mobility. The company aims to contribute to the transition to full electrification that both the industry and society are striving for.
Production details for the EX30 remain undisclosed, including its eligibility for federal tax rebates. However, Volvo’s American plant will manufacture the electric EX90, demonstrating the brand’s commitment to electrification.
