Honda and its luxury brand, Acura, have announced a recall affecting a total of 124,077 vehicles across various models. The reason for the recall is a potentially improper assembly of a part in the brake system, which could lead to brake failure.
The models impacted by the recall include the 2020-2021 Honda Civic, 2020-2023 Ridgeline, 2021-2023 Passport, 2021-2022 Pilot, and the 2020 Acura MDX.
According to Honda, the issue revolves around the brake master cylinder, which may have been inadequately fastened to the brake booster assembly during the production process. Specifically, the problem lies with the tie rod fastener. If improperly assembled, this can result in loose or missing tie rod nuts. Consequently, applying the brakes can generate a bending load on the brake booster tie rod studs, potentially causing them to break. This, in turn, can lead to the separation of the brake master cylinder from the brake booster, resulting in a loss or reduction of brake functionality.
Honda initiated an investigation after receiving a report of brake failure in a 2021 Pilot last year. Fortunately, there have been no reported accidents, injuries, or fatalities associated with this issue. However, Honda has received two warranty claims related to the problem since September 2022.
Owner notifications for the recall are scheduled to commence on August 7 of this year. Honda has assured customers that they will inspect and replace any missing nuts. Additionally, if any brake booster assembly components are found to be damaged, they will be replaced as well.
