If you ask most Americans to name a car built by Alfa Romeo, chances are you’ll get replies like “the Spider,” or “the Graduate.” You probably won’t hear many people mention the 164, or the GTV or the Giulia, since these cars are long gone from the U.S. market. Worse, I suspect that the question would be met with a blank stare from most people, since Alfa Romeo hasn’t been active in the U.S. market since 1995, and 17 years is a long time in an industry that turns over product every three to five years. Fiat’s mid-engined, rear drive X1/9 sport coupe was one of the cars I lusted after in my newly-licensed years. Back then, they were cheap and they were plentiful, and they took to corners like Charlie Sheen takes to porn stars. On the down side, they were also about as reliable as Charlie Sheen, and just as prone to breakdowns. I hate to harp on Fiat, which is now born again in the United States with vastly improved products and quality control, but the old jokes about “Fix It Again, Tony” were pretty much on the money. That explained why so many relatively clean examples could be found for fire sale prices; most had a “minor electrical problem” or “needed a tune up”, which was really code for “this four-wheeled spawn of satan has drained my bank account, so it’s time to ruin someone else’s life”. Today the Supreme Court cleared the sale of Chrysler LLC to the Italian Fiat S.p.A led group. The sale was closed this morning, as the New York Times reported, confirming a wire transfer from the federal government providing Chrysler with $6.6 in bankruptcy exiting financing.
