Toyota has announced a major recall involving over 100,000 vehicles, specifically targeting the Tundra full-size pickup trucks and the Lexus LX luxury SUVs. This recall, first reported by Automotive News, addresses potential engine issues in vehicles equipped with the twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 engines.
In May, Toyota identified that 102,000 units of Tundra and LX vehicles might contain machining debris within their twin-turbo V-6 engines. This debris can lead to engine knocking, rough idling, or even complete engine failure. As a precautionary measure, Toyota has committed to replacing the engines free of charge.
While details from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) were pending at the time of the announcement, Toyota confirmed through a spokesperson that customers would be informed about the recall within the month. Owners of the affected vehicles will receive notifications, and they will be provided with a loaner vehicle or rental during the engine replacement process, which is expected to take between 13 to 21 hours.

Both the Tundra and LX underwent redesigns for the 2022 model year, transitioning from naturally-aspirated V-8 engines to the new twin-turbo V-6 engines. This V-6 engine is also featured in the 2023 Toyota Sequoia, albeit exclusively with a hybrid system. As of now, no recall has been issued for the Sequoia concerning this engine.
The current recall is not the first for these models. In February, a recall involving 280,000 vehicles, including the Tundra, Lexus LX, and Sequoia, addressed a transmission-related rollaway risk. Additionally, in August 2023, over 168,000 Tundras were recalled due to leaky fuel lines. Another significant recall in June 2022 involved the Tundra’s rear axle housing, which had the potential to separate from its shaft.
