Hyundai Halts Sales of Some 2026 Palisade SUVs After Fatal Power Seat Crushing Incident

Hyundai has put a stop sale in place for certain 2026 Palisade SUVs in the United States and Canada following a tragic incident that has now put the vehicle’s rear power seat system under intense scrutiny. According to Reuters, the issue centers on the Palisade’s second and third-row power seats, which in some situations may not properly detect contact with an occupant or object. The move follows a March 7 incident in Ohio involving the death of a two-year-old girl, a case that remains under investigation as Hyundai says it still does not have the full details.

The stop sale applies specifically to 2026 Hyundai Palisade Limited and Calligraphy trims, and Hyundai is preparing a recall covering about 68,500 vehicles across North America. Of that total, roughly 60,500 are in the U.S. and around 8,000 are in Canada. It is a serious step for the automaker, especially considering the Palisade’s role as one of Hyundai’s most important family-oriented SUVs, and it shows just how seriously the company is taking the potential safety risk tied to the rear seating system.

Hyundai says it is working on a full recall remedy, but in the meantime the company is also developing an interim over-the-air software update expected by the end of March. That update is intended to improve how the system responds when it encounters a person or object, while also adding more operating safeguards to the rear seat functions. Until a permanent fix is ready, Hyundai says customers who want alternative transportation may be eligible for a rental vehicle, which is an important gesture given the seriousness of the situation.

This is the kind of news no automaker ever wants attached to one of its flagship vehicles, especially one designed around family use and day-to-day convenience. Hyundai has expressed sympathy to the child’s family and is urging owners to use extra caution when operating the second and third-row power seat features, making sure the area is clear before activating them. As more details emerge, this recall is likely to remain a closely watched story, not just for Palisade owners, but for anyone paying attention to how advanced vehicle features can create very real safety concerns when something goes wrong.
