Who says the traditional family sedan has to fade away quietly? Honda certainly doesn’t appear ready to give up on one of its most recognizable nameplates, and some interesting changes could be coming for the Accord. After years of playing things relatively safe with its styling, Honda is reportedly preparing a dramatic makeover for the 2028 Accord, complete with a sleeker design, upgraded hybrid technology, and a more modern interior. Even more intriguing is talk of an entirely new Accord-based SUV that could arrive in 2029 to challenge the Subaru Outback. For a vehicle that has been part of the American automotive landscape for nearly 50 years, the Accord might be getting ready for one of its most interesting transformations yet.
According to reports from Automotive News, the updated Accord sedan is expected to arrive during the second half of 2027 as a 2028 model. Rather than another conservative refresh, Honda is reportedly planning a much more futuristic appearance inspired by its recent Hybrid Sedan Prototype and elements of the company’s experimental 0 Series design language. Expect a lower, wider-looking front end, slimmer LED headlights, a more streamlined grille, and a sportier roofline. A full-width rear light bar and redesigned rear fascia could also give the Accord a much more distinctive appearance. Considering the current generation’s relatively understated styling, we’d welcome a little more personality from Honda’s popular midsize sedan.
Inside, the next Accord could receive a substantial technology upgrade with a more driver-focused dashboard, a larger central touchscreen, and a fully digital instrument cluster. Enhanced Google built-in functionality, over-the-air software updates, and additional connected features are also expected. Honda could even introduce its S+ Shift technology, which debuted on the revived Prelude and uses simulated gear changes to make the hybrid driving experience more engaging. Under the hood, Honda is developing an improved version of its two-motor hybrid system, with a goal of increasing efficiency by approximately 10% compared with the current setup. The existing Accord Hybrid already delivers 204 horsepower and impressive fuel economy, so even modest improvements could make it an even stronger competitor against the hybrid-only Toyota Camry.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is the possibility of a new Accord SUV, which sounds suspiciously like a modern interpretation of the old Honda Accord Crosstour. Remember that one? Honda offered the unusual hatchback crossover from 2010 through 2015, but it never really found a large enough audience. This time, however, the market is considerably different, with buyers embracing wagon-like crossovers such as the Subaru Outback and Toyota Crown Signia. Reports suggest Honda is considering a raised, Accord-based hatchback with additional ground clearance, a versatile cargo area, and a more adventurous appearance. Production could begin around the middle of 2029 at Honda’s Marysville, Ohio, facility, although the project has not been officially approved or announced for production.
The timing makes sense as Honda shifts more of its development resources toward hybrid vehicles following changes to its electric vehicle strategy. The company has already confirmed plans to introduce a new generation of hybrid powertrains and vehicle platforms beginning in 2027, with the goal of bringing 15 new hybrid models to global markets by 2030. The future Accord SUV could benefit from that technology, potentially offering excellent fuel economy without requiring owners to plug in. Reports also suggest Honda’s longer-term plans could eventually make the Accord lineup entirely hybrid-powered, following a strategy similar to Toyota’s approach with the Camry. Pricing remains speculative, but the updated sedan could start around $30,000, while an Accord-based crossover would likely need to compete in the mid-$30,000 range to attract buyers considering a Subaru Outback.
What makes all of this particularly encouraging is that Honda appears committed to keeping the Accord relevant rather than abandoning the sedan market altogether. The Accord has been a staple of American driveways for decades, and while SUVs continue dominating sales, there’s clearly still demand for a comfortable, efficient, and reasonably affordable midsize car. We think a more aggressively styled Accord with improved hybrid performance could be exactly what Honda needs to give the nameplate some renewed excitement. As for the rumored Accord SUV, we’re actually intrigued by the possibility, especially if Honda manages to capture some of the practicality and distinctive character that make vehicles like the Subaru Outback and Toyota Crown Signia appealing. Nothing has been finalized yet, but if these reported plans come together, the Accord name could soon represent much more than just a traditional family sedan.
