Rivian R2 Sales Take Off, Outselling the R1T and R1S Combined as EV Demand Surges

Rivian might have just found the vehicle that changes everything for the young electric automaker. The new R2 SUV is already outselling the larger R1T pickup and R1S SUV combined, and here’s the impressive part: buyers are currently snapping up the most expensive version. According to Rivian’s latest third-quarter earnings results, the R2 has quickly become the company’s best-selling vehicle, even surpassing its commercial electric delivery vans. That’s an encouraging sign for a brand looking to expand beyond the relatively expensive EV market.

What’s particularly interesting is that the R2 is currently available only in its range-topping Performance trim, which starts at $59,485. That’s hardly cheap, but it’s considerably more affordable than the R1T and R1S, which start at $81,885 and $85,885, respectively. The R2 Performance delivers an impressive 656 horsepower from its dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup, allowing it to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in approximately 3.6 seconds. Combine that with Rivian’s distinctive styling, versatile interior, and adventure-focused personality, and it’s easy to see why buyers are interested.

The numbers back up that enthusiasm. Rivian delivered 19,248 vehicles during the third quarter of 2026, representing a 46% increase over the same period last year. Although the company hasn’t disclosed exactly how many R2 SUVs were sold, its strong performance has prompted Rivian to raise its full-year delivery forecast to between 67,000 and 70,000 vehicles. Even more promising is that the more affordable R2 models haven’t arrived yet. The $55,485 Premium trim is expected in late 2026, while the entry-level Standard model, starting at $46,485, is scheduled for 2027.

From our perspective, the R2’s success makes plenty of sense. Rivian has always built appealing electric vehicles, but the R1 models carried price tags that limited their audience. The R2 brings much of that same character and capability into a more attainable package, and the upcoming lower-priced versions could make it even more appealing. Of course, strong sales don’t automatically translate into profitability, but Rivian appears to have found a winning formula. If demand continues at this pace, the R2 could become the vehicle that helps establish Rivian as a serious long-term competitor in the American EV market.
