New Car Preview: 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee

We recently had a pretty good experience with the new 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L touting its three-rows of seating accommodations and luxury appointments. During our drive, we could not help but think about how Jeep will soon introduce a two-row version of the new design. Today, Jeep has taken the wraps off the newly redesigned Jeep Grand Cherokee in its two-row seating configuration featuring the new design language and welcomed updates that the Grand Cherokee L first received for the new model year.

The new 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee gains most of what is found in the L version that many have already experienced. With that, the Grand Cherokee two-row expands a bit with a plug-in hybrid 4xe system that combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged gas engine and a 100-kW electric motor for a system that outputs 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. The plug-in hybrid is claimed to be good for an electric range of 25 miles and the most powerful engine choice for the new Grand Cherokee two-row. The other two engine choices are what you may already expect, either the standard 3.6-liter V6 with 293 horsepower or the HEMI 5.7-liter V8 with 357 horsepower.

Where things start to depart from the L version of the Grand Cherokee is its off-roading prowess where there is a Trialhawk trim level that returns that get an extra 0.4 inches of ground clearance when the air suspension system is set to its max height that tops out at 11.3 inches in total. The Trailhawk also comes with all-terrain tires, the brand’s Quadra-Drive II 4WD system that couples an electronic rear limited-slip differential, and the welcomed Selec-Terrain drive modes. There’s also skid plates, tow hooks, and specially designed bumpers to help improve the approach and departure angle gaining 5.6 degrees of approach, 3.6 degrees of departure, and an additional 1.8 degrees of breakover compared to the outgoing model. The Trailhawk 4xe plug-in hybrid gets slightly less capability mostly due to its extra weight carrying that battery pack. The new Grand Cherokee can also ford water up to 24-inches for the Trailhawk trims.

Getting to the luxurious bits, the new Grand Cherokee gets all of what you find in the new L version, which includes premium appointments that are quite luxurious with upholstery options including available Nappa leather and quilted Palermo leather, oak or walnut wood trim, a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster, a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, and a new offering taking a page from the new Wagoneer is an available front passenger 10.25-inch entertainment screen in the dashboard. The same trim levels will be available as in the past with the Summit Reserve and Summit Reserve 4xe being the range-topping trims.

The interior space is going to be cut a little shorter than the L version of the Grand Cherokee in the new two-row vehicle. However, there’s still a good amount of space to work with, especially for cargo volume that’s only 9.2 cubic feet less than the L behind the second row. In all, the Grand Cherokee has a larger interior space, as much as 4 additional cubic feet and 1.4 more cubic feet of cargo room over the outgoing model.

Pricing and fuel economy numbers will be announced closer to the Grand Cherokee being available at local dealerships, which should be in a couple of months before the year is over.
