Tinting your Tesla is one of the best modifications you can make to the car. It enhances the interior comfort of the car and adds aesthetic value to the car’s exterior look while increasing Tesla’s efficiency. Teslas are unique cars because there are plenty of electrical components hidden around the car’s exterior.

Troubles of Tinting a Tesla

Not every shop is equipped with the right capability to tint your Tesla. In addition to that, you also need to be careful of the film you choose to maximize the heat rejection. The front windshield is incredibly difficult to tint in a Tesla Model 3 because there are a variety of electrical components that lie beneath it. If water happens to get inside, it can be very problematic for the car.

Therefore, the tint installer needs to be very prepared and specialized in tinting a Tesla. According to the Tesla forums, many Tesla owners have complained about tint installers frying their electrical system.

Windshield Cracking

Sometimes the rear windshield cracks, and there can be multiple reasons for it. Most of the time, this is the driver’s fault. If you run over a curve when driving the Tesla at high speeds, there can be an instant flex in the frame, causing it to crack. Another reason could relate to tinting the windshield.

If you are tinting your windshield, then there is always a slight chance that you can cause a crack in the rear windshield as well. A tint can cause the Tesla windshield to crack because of the nano ceramic film qualities. There are two ways the nano-ceramic lowers the infrared and solar energy transmission into the cabin.

The first way is that it reflects the sun away from the windshield. Secondly, there are ceramic particles in the windshield that absorbs the heat. The temperature of the windshield rises once it absorbs the heat. Therefore, the longer it stays in the sun, the warmer it becomes.

This causes the windshield to crack as a consequence. If you are planning to tint your car, you need to consider many aspects. The first is heat exposure of your car, and the other is the quality of the film, among other things. Better films have a double layer of nano-ceramics, which is why it has better heat rejection.

Types of Films

There are three types of films that you can use when making changes to your Tesla. The first type is the dye film, while the other is the carbon film. The best of all films for tesla window tinting is the nano-ceramic film. There are a few major companies that manufacture these films.

When looking at the different types of films you should use for the Tesla, you may tend to look into films with the highest solar energy rejection. Most films also do a very good job of rejecting solar energy. The best ones reject around 75% of solar energy, all the way down to 30 or 35%.

The ceramic films hang around 50 to 60%, along with a 35% visible light transmission rating. This is when you are looking from the outside into the cabin. A tint shop will likely carry multiple brands, and most will carry the best ones. However, you will still have to choose between them.

Once you can settle down and pick the ones you like, you can move onwards to the installation process. Most brands are very decent, and therefore, you are less likely to have an issue regarding the quality of the tint.

Your choice will likely come down to your pricing requirements, range and budget. Ceramic films will generally last you a long time and retain their quality. Many Tesla owners mix and match with the different brands, so the choice comes down to what you can afford.

Where Should You Tint the Car?

If you are looking for ultimate protection, you need to get all the windows tinted. If you are a family man, getting the rear windshield tinted is recommended. It is worth noting that most modern vehicles come with a factory tint. The recommended setup for a Tesla Model 3 is a 35% VLT for all the side windows.

Before you move forward trying to tint your car, keep in mind that every state has its requirements regarding tints. Each state will lay out guidelines for tint, the side front, the side mirror, and the windshield. Click here to learn about the tint requirements in North Carolina.

 How long do Tints Last?

If you install ceramic, crystalline, or carbon tint, then you can expect it to last you a very long time. It can also run past the lifetime of your vehicle. If you install cheap tint, it will only last a few months and a few years. The lifespan of a tint can also depend on your geographical location, heat damage, and high-quality tint.

How much does a Tesla tint Cost?

A Tesla tint will largely vary depending on the location and area that you are in. Moreover, different tint shops will also offer different prices for installation and products. If you are going to a high-quality shop, you may be looking at prices ranging from around $400 to $1200. If you opt for something like 3m crystalline film, you should expect to spend countless amounts of money. A Tesla Model 3 may cost a little more because executing the tint is difficult on that Model.
