Volvo has now jumped into the Tesla charging fray! In its pursuit of becoming a fully electric car manufacturer by 2030, Volvo has become the first European automaker to collaborate with Tesla. This landmark agreement grants current and future electric Volvo car drivers access to Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network spanning the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Starting from 2025, upcoming Volvo models will be equipped with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) charging port in this region. By embracing this standard, Volvo drivers will have the convenience of utilizing 12,000 new fast-charge points provided by Tesla. As Tesla continues to expand its Supercharger network, this number is expected to grow further.

Moreover, these new charging facilities complement the tens of thousands of existing fast-charge points already available to Volvo drivers. This strategic alliance aims to simplify the experience of owning an electric vehicle, a crucial step in promoting sustainable transportation.

Jim Rowan, CEO at Volvo Cars, emphasized the importance of removing barriers to electric driving: “As we work towards our goal of achieving full electrification by 2030, we strive to make the transition to electric vehicles as seamless as possible. Access to convenient and reliable charging infrastructure remains a major hurdle preventing more people from embracing electric driving. Through this agreement, we are breaking down this barrier for Volvo drivers in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.”

Current owners of Volvo’s fully electric lineup, including models such as the XC40, C40 Recharge, and the recently unveiled EX30 and EX90, will be able to locate charging stations using the Volvo Cars app. Starting from the first half of 2024, they are anticipated to access the Tesla Supercharger network with the aid of an adapter.

For future Volvo vehicles equipped with the NACS charging port, owners who prefer to continue using the Combined Charging System (CCS) can do so with an adapter provided by Volvo Cars.

To further facilitate the charging process, the Volvo Cars app offers drivers of fully electric Volvo cars in the United States and Canada access to tens of thousands of public charging stations. The app also provides real-time information on charger availability and offers a streamlined payment system, ensuring that charging a Volvo car is a hassle-free experience.
