Infiniti Plots a True Performance Comeback with BMW M in Its Sights

Infiniti has played in the performance space before, but it never fully committed. The clearest example was the Q60 IPL, a handsome coupe that gained a bit more power and sharper styling, yet still fell short of being a real rival to BMW M or Mercedes AMG. It added flair and attitude, but not the kind of headline performance that changes the way enthusiasts think about a brand.

This time, Infiniti says it wants to do things differently. In a recent interview, Nissan Americas product planning chief Ponz Pandikuthira said the company is working on a “true performance” car that could stand alongside the established heavyweights from Germany. That means far more power and capability than the old IPL badge ever delivered, and a much bolder engineering target than simply squeezing out another small bump in horsepower.

Pandikuthira also acknowledged the tricky balance Infiniti has to strike. Customers in this segment want serious speed, but they are not willing to give up luxury, quiet cabins, or elegant design to get it. Building something with 50 percent more power while keeping the refinement and reliability expected of a premium brand is a far different challenge than just turning up the boost a little.

Nissan Americas chairman Christian Meunier framed the goal as creating a true halo product, the sort of car people aspire to own and that lifts the perception of the entire lineup. Infiniti does not just want a quick variant hidden in the order guide. It wants a best in class statement piece that makes shoppers consider the brand right alongside more established performance names.

There is already a clear path for where these ideas might land. Infiniti has confirmed that a manual performance sedan is coming, likely the next generation Q50. That alone makes a strong statement in a market where three pedals are becoming rare. Beyond the sedan, the brand wants to extend this new performance line to SUVs like the QX65 and QX80, giving its crossovers and full size utility vehicles more excitement as well.

To show what might be possible, Infiniti even rolled out a QX80 concept at SEMA with a GT R engine swapped under the hood. That exact powertrain is unlikely to reach showrooms, but the message behind it is hard to miss. Infiniti appears ready to move beyond mild upgrades and build the kind of halo performance machines that can finally take a real shot at BMW M and Mercedes AMG, rather than just watching from the sidelines.
