Next-Gen Mazda Miata Looks Set to Stay Light, Pure, and Refreshingly Old School

Mazda appears to understand exactly what Miata fans are worried about, and more importantly, what they still want. Early comments about the next-generation MX-5 suggest the company is determined to keep the roadster true to its core formula, with a target weight of under 2,200 pounds for the soft-top model. That is a big statement in today’s automotive landscape, where even compact performance cars keep getting heavier, more digital, and more complicated.

That weight target matters because the Miata has never lived or died by horsepower alone. Its charm has always come from balance, agility, and the kind of simplicity that makes even a normal back road feel entertaining. Mazda’s reported “gram strategy” sounds like a continuation of that mindset, which is exactly what enthusiasts hoped to hear. If the company can actually deliver a sub-1,000-kilogram roadster in the next generation, it would make the future MX-5 feel more like a proper evolution of the car rather than just another modern reinterpretation weighed down by regulations and feature creep.

Just as notable is Mazda’s apparent reluctance to electrify the Miata, at least for now. Company comments indicate hybrid hardware is still viewed as too heavy for a car that depends so much on lightness and responsiveness, which helps explain why the internal combustion engine remains the preferred path forward. That does not mean Mazda is ignoring the realities of emissions and future regulations, but it does suggest the brand is being careful not to compromise the MX-5’s personality in the process. For a car with this kind of legacy, that restraint may end up being one of the smartest decisions Mazda can make.

There is still plenty we do not know about the next Miata, including exactly when it will arrive and what engine will ultimately power it, but the direction sounds promising. In an era when so many sports cars are chasing bigger numbers, more modes, and more mass, Mazda seems to be sticking with the idea that fun starts with keeping things lean and honest. If that philosophy holds through production, the next MX-5 could end up being one of the most important enthusiast cars of the next few years.
