The selection of cars from Mercedes-Benz is vast, and the AMG line of luxury performance is almost just as vast, offering a high-powered variation of just about every model line they offer. To make sure they keep giving everyone a large selection of vehicles and appease those who prefer drop-top variations that go really fast, there are cars like the new AMG C63 S Cabriolet.

My past week was spent in enjoyment with the 2020 Mercedes-AMG C63 S Convertible, a vehicle that runs up against the likings of the BMW M4 convertible but does it with the expected style you can only get from Mercedes-Benz. That style is one that foreshadows a commonality found throughout the Mercedes brand, which is quite welcomed due to them having some remarkable interiors and utilize a potent 4.0-liter BiTurbo V8 engine.
The power from the force-fed V8 is strong, 503 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque strong. Opting for the C63 S over the C63 (without the “S” w/469 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque) gives you an additional 34 horsepower and 37 extra lb-ft of torque elevating the sleek and somewhat compact drop-top luxury missile. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 9-speed automatic transmission that feels more suited for spirited driving over commuting in heavy city traffic. The latest 9-speed automatic felt a bit hesitant at lower speeds, but bringing on the power in Sport and Race drive modes, the transmission fired off snappy-quick shifts leaving the guesswork to the wide-patched 285-series Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires out back.
AMG vehicles traditionally give buyers what they want, both in terms of having the top-of-the-line Mercedes model in addition to the most powerful. You get just that in the C63 S Cabriolet – one of the most powerful compact luxury sports coupes with a soft-folding top, one that folds in 20 seconds at speeds up to 31 mph.
The ride quality of the C63 S Cab is predictable, as is its welcoming dynamics of handling through bends to carve up back roads. However, there is a sensation of an extra bit of weight over the C63 S Coupe, where the Cabriolet doesn’t feel as lively getting into the throttle initially. Of course, the C63 S Cab begs you to have fun, and you’ll hardly ever get the EPA-estimated highway fuel economy of 24 mpg. I saw an average of about 16.5 mpg, just shy of the city estimate of 17 mpg.
Inside and out of the AMG C63 S Cabriolet is all that you expect from Mercedes. The interior is full of soft-touch surfaces, high-quality accent stitching, supportive front seats with ample adjustability, and the creature comforts that you expect, such as the unique heated AIRSCARF system that I often used during the 50-degree winter evenings of north Florida to keep my neck area warm. The dashboard has been updated to feature a new configurable 12.3-inch LCD screen that you find in other new Benz vehicles but retains an older iteration of the infotainment system without the intricacies of the new MBUX touchscreen and voice response system. Still, the older system proves to be a decent workhorse without the polish of the newer system.
To be a little unique and offsetting from other high-performance luxury vehicles, the Mercedes-AMG C63 S Cabriolet has the proper looks to garner attention. From my test vehicle’s Cardinal Red Metallic paint job and the different sized (19-inch front/20-inch rear) AMG Forged wheels, to its aggressive front panamericana grille and bulging LED headlights, visually, this AMG C63 S Cab means business and backs it up with the proper performance.
Getting into a new 2020 Mercedes-AMG C63 S Cab, which is at the upper echelon of the C Class for Mercedes, you’ll look to spend just over $84,000. With all the goodies of my test vehicle added on, such as its $1,000 paint job, color head-up display, ventilated front seats, an exterior lighting package chock full of exceptionally-bright LEDs, a multimedia package, and an AMG night package for an menacing look on the outside – the price creeps to $96,950 including a $995 destination and delivery charge.
