2026 Subaru Outback Touring Gets a Free Hands-Free Highway Driving Update Up to 85 MPH

Subaru is rolling out a no-cost software update for owners of the all-new 2026 Outback Touring and Touring XT that unlocks the brand’s first hands-free highway driving system. Once updated, Highway Hands-Free Assist can allow hands-free operation at speeds up to 85 mph on most U.S. interstate highways, giving Outback buyers a new tech advantage without asking them to spend an extra cent. Subaru says the update is not needed for vehicles sold after January 19, 2026, since those should already have the feature active from the start.

The system works as an extension of EyeSight, and it is designed for limited hands-free use when advanced adaptive cruise control is on. It is not a “set it and forget it” setup, either. Subaru’s DriverFocus tech keeps watch on the driver to make sure you are paying attention and ready to take over at any moment. If the system senses you are not attentive, it will disengage and prompt you to get your hands back on the wheel.

Under the hood, Subaru says this expanded EyeSight suite blends GPS data, 3D high-definition maps, millimeter-wave radar, and camera input to better understand the road and your position in it. Engineers reportedly racked up nearly 100,000 miles of hands-free driving during development to fine-tune how smoothly the system behaves, especially when it comes to driver monitoring and those moments when it needs to hand control back to you. When it is active, the digital gauge cluster shows clear status indicators, with green icons for hands-on assist and blue icons when hands-free highway assist is engaged.

Subaru is also using this update to spotlight a second-generation DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System that is more advanced than before. The upgraded setup uses a wider-angle, higher-resolution camera with improved processing, plus infrared LEDs designed to track eye gaze even through most sunglasses and eyeglasses. Beyond the safety angle, there is a convenience perk that many owners will appreciate: driver recognition that can automatically bring up personalized seat position, mirrors, and climate preferences for up to five different users.
