BMW iX Set to Exit the U.S. as BMW Prepares Its Next Wave of Electric SUVs

BMW is preparing to say goodbye to one of its boldest electric vehicles in the American market. After the 2026 model year, the iX will no longer be sold in the United States, marking the end of a short but notable run for the brand’s flagship-style electric SUV. It is a surprising move on the surface, especially considering BMW just gave the iX a significant refresh, but it also points to a bigger shift in strategy as the company readies its next generation of EVs for America.

When the iX first arrived, it stood out for all the reasons BMW likely intended. Its styling was polarizing, its cabin was whisper-quiet, and its ride quality gave it a distinctly premium feel that separated it from more conventional luxury SUVs. It never became a mainstream hit in the way the gas-powered X5 has, but it still carved out a place for itself with buyers who wanted something futuristic, comfortable, and unmistakably different. In many ways, the iX felt like BMW testing just how far it could push the brand’s EV identity.

Even so, the market has clearly spoken. Luxury EV buyers in the U.S. have continued to lean toward more familiar shapes and nameplates, and BMW seems ready to respond by reshaping its electric lineup around that reality. The iX may be leaving America, but the company is not backing away from EVs here. If anything, this looks more like a handoff, with future products expected to take its place in a form that may better align with what U.S. buyers already know and trust.

That is what makes this decision more interesting than it first appears. Rather than continuing to fight for space with a niche electric SUV, BMW seems intent on clearing the path for its Neue Klasse era and the electric models that will define it. An electric version of the next-generation X5 is widely expected to become a major part of that story, and that alone could give BMW a stronger footing in the premium EV SUV space. For the iX, the end of the road in America does not necessarily mean failure. It may simply mean it served its purpose as a bridge to what comes next.
