There have been a few BMW vehicles that have previewed the future of electric automobiles, at least in the form of a hybrid and just a couple all-electric vehicles. Making the full-on move to EVs, BMW is poised to introduce several crossover utility-styled vehicles, such as the upcoming 2022 BMW iX.

The new 2022 BMW iX is a valid effort for BMW to get deep into the fray of EVs being their first compact crossover EV that promises the performance you expect out of a BMW. With that, the iX will get 516 horsepower and 564 lb-ft of torque with the ability to hit 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds.

The power of the BMW iX is supplied by a 112-kWh battery back that yields a range of about 300 miles. Charging the battery from 10% up to 80% will take under 40 minutes utilizing a 200-kW DC fast charger or better. That puts in on par with current competition from the Tesla Model X and Y. Using a Level 2 charger up to 11kW of power, the iX can be charged from dead to 100% in about 11 hours. Mind you, these numbers are all from the xDrive50 trim level, which is the only trim that will come available for the iX upon its release and delivery dates set for June 2022.

There’s something to be said about the presence of the new BMW iX as it has a somewhat controversial look up front with the elongated kidney grille, similar to that found on the current BMW 4 series, M3, and M4. Otherwise, the rest of the iX’s exterior design is cohesive in the sense of being something noticeably different but agreeable for a new EV crossover. Other traits found on the exterior are unique to the brand and signify it being an EV versus anything currently offered in the lineup that’s powered by gasoline.

In the area of technology, the BMW iX will be a leap forward with a 12.3-inch digital driver’s gauge cluster, a new 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen that’s slightly angled towards the driver, and some of the slimmest LED headlights on the market that will surely be among the best for their reaching distance in the dark in the low beam setting.

Other highlights that make the iX a special EV SUV are its flush door handles that pop out from a simple touch, an interior camera that may record an unauthorized intrusion or theft of the vehicle, an available 30-speaker sound system, haptic controls behind open-pore wood trim, and several glass elements controls.

The 2022 BMW iX xDrive50, similar to the size of the current BMW X5 despite its classification, can be reserved now with a $1,500 pre-order deposit. However, the June 2022 deliveries are currently sold-out leaving others with a “summer 2022” delivery date, which we expect isn’t too far removed from the June deliveries. Pricing starts at $83,200 before any fees or destination charges.
