Few cars have “just enough.”
It’s easy to build an overpowered muscle car that will spin the wheels at every light, but run off the road at the first sharp corner. It’s popular to build an underpowered canyon carver that barely creeps off the line. The Brilliant Black 333 horsepower 325 lb-ft supercharged 3.0L V6 all-wheel-drive 2014 Audi S5 Coupe quattro S tronic has the ability to launch from a dead stop with enough inertia to make your eyes cross, thanks to the launch control feature, and is planted like little else on the roadways. Audi’s incredible sports coupe with permanent all-wheel-drive is powerful, refined, and an absolute blast to drive.
The S5’s interior exudes European quality and employs race inspired ergonomics. The heated leather and Alcantara 8-way power S Sport seats with 4-way lumbar and driver memory are among the most supportive and best looking seats available from any manufacturer. The rear seating is comfortable, even for larger adults, which is rare in a sports coupe. The infotainment system sounds fantastic and the GPS employs Google Maps, something that I hope other manufacturers begin to investigate. The Google powered GPS in the Audi was spot on, easy to read, and offered real time information that allowed me to focus on the road.
Driving the supercharged AWD 2014 Audi S5 was an experience that I won’t soon forget. The car handles brilliantly. The power is just right and comes on almost instantly upon wide-open throttle and everything in between. Audi’s electronics allow the driver to switch between comfort, auto, dynamic, and individual driving modes. As an enthusiast I usually left the dial set to dynamic, complete with stiff suspension, aggressive steering and rowdy shifts from the seven-speed S tronic twin-clutch transmission, but I found the comfort mode operated as described, the S5 became a subdued gentleman, shifts were gentle, the exhaust tame and the ride quality actually is quite comfortable.
The bottom line is that the 2014 Audi S5 is an amazing car, even when you consider the starting manufacturer’s retail price of $53,400 or the as tested price of $59,545.00. Yes there are more powerful cars to be had at lower price points, but little on the market does everything as well as the Audi.
