The Mercedes-Benz E-Class wagon has carved out a unique niche in the American auto market, although it has never quite attained the level of popularity it enjoys in Europe. While the rowdy E 63 wagon is no longer available in the United States, Mercedes has introduced an intriguing alternative in the form of the E-Class All-Terrain. This rugged wagon recently underwent a comprehensive update, ushering in its sixth generation and offering enthusiasts a closer look at its revamped features.

For the 2024 model year, the E-Class All-Terrain comes standard with all-wheel drive and an adaptive air suspension system. These enhancements are complemented by the inclusion of an off-road driving mode, a distinctive feature not found in its sedan counterpart. Despite its similar overall length to the sedan variant, the All-Terrain distinguishes itself with its increased height and width, accompanied by 18-inch wheels as standard. This subtle size adjustment has also translated into improved interior space, particularly in the second row, providing occupants with enhanced comfort and roominess.

While the E-Class All-Terrain may lack the roaring V8 powerplant found in the E 63, it compensates with a potent turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine paired with a mild-hybrid system. This combination generates a formidable 375 horsepower and 369 pounds-feet of torque, with an electric motor contributing an additional 23 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. This results in a brisk 0-60 mph acceleration time of just 4.6 seconds. The adaptive air suspension system also contributes to performance by automatically lowering the vehicle by 0.6 inches when cruising at speeds above 75 mph, improving both aerodynamics and fuel efficiency.

Inside the cabin, the 2024 E-Class All-Terrain boasts a host of updates, including the availability of the Superscreen system, which introduces a passenger display screen. The off-road driving mode further enhances the experience by activating the car’s 360-degree camera system and introducing a “transparent hood” feature, allowing the driver to have a clearer view of the terrain ahead. Mercedes has equipped the wagon with a new processor, enhancing navigation speed and responsiveness, and enabling the use of a 5G modem for over-the-air updates and connectivity features.

The upgraded processing power unlocks several novel features, such as a sound visualization function that projects images onto the vehicle’s displays. Additionally, the E-Class All-Terrain now supports third-party apps, permitting users to engage in activities like playing games, streaming videos, or participating in virtual meetings through platforms like WebEx or Zoom. The car’s in-cabin cameras also facilitate the capture of selfies and videos, providing a new level of connectivity and entertainment.

Mercedes has prioritized safety with the E-Class All-Terrain, equipping it with a range of driver aids, including driver attention assist, forward collision warnings, automatic emergency braking, and a comprehensive parking package. Buyers can opt for available tech features like active lane-keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, and speed limit assist, further enhancing the vehicle’s safety profile.

While pricing details for the 2024 E-Class All-Terrain remain undisclosed, Mercedes has confirmed its arrival at U.S. dealerships in 2024. Enthusiasts can look forward to learning more about this rugged wagon at the upcoming IAA Munich conference, where Mercedes plans to celebrate its release. With its blend of off-road capability, advanced technology, and refined design, the E-Class All-Terrain continues to offer an intriguing proposition for those seeking a distinctive and versatile luxury wagon in the American market.
