GM Now Recalling 820,000 Pickup Trucks Over Tailgate Issue

General Motors has expanded its recall efforts, now encompassing approximately 820,000 newer model pickup trucks in North America due to concerns regarding tailgate safety. Initially, the recall targeted around 320,000 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks from 2020 to 2024 due to a short circuit tailgate switch issue. However, the scope has broadened to include a larger number of trucks, spanning the same model years.

The expanded recall focuses on trucks equipped with power unlatching tailgates, as water intrusion into the exterior tailgate switch can lead to a short circuit while the vehicle is parked. This issue poses a potential safety hazard as the tailgate could unlatch and open unexpectedly. There have been reports of one minor injury and three minor property damage complaints related to this concern.

The recall covers approximately 570,000 trucks in the United States and 250,000 in Canada, making it one of GM’s most significant recalls of the year. Both U.S. and Canadian regulators emphasize the risk of unsecured cargo falling onto the road if the tailgate opens while the vehicle is in motion.

To address the issue, GM dealers will replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies with parts that feature improved resistance to water intrusion. In the interim, vehicles in dealership inventory and owners may have the part disabled until replacement parts become available. Additionally, GM advises owners to inspect their tailgates to ensure they are closed and latched securely before driving.

GM initiated an investigation in response to complaints of unwanted tailgate openings, receiving a total of 136 complaints alleging such incidents. The affected trucks include 2020-2023 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra models, as well as heavy-duty versions from 2020 to 2024.

GM reassures that it is working swiftly to remedy the issue and enhance the safety of its vehicles.
