Lamborghini has unveiled its latest creation, the Urus SE, marking the Italian automaker’s foray into the realm of plug-in hybrid SUVs. Departing from convention, Lamborghini maintains its signature power and speed by retaining the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 engine while incorporating an electric motor into the mix. Contrary to the norm for PHEV setups, the Urus SE boasts the same potent V-8, augmented by an electric motor nestled within its eight-speed automatic transmission.

The electric motor generates 189 horsepower and 356 pound-feet of torque, complementing the gasoline engine’s impressive 612 hp and 590 lb-ft. Together, they propel the Urus SE to a total system output of 789 hp and 701 lb-ft of torque, offering exhilarating performance. Surpassing its predecessor, the Urus S, the SE variant achieves a 0-62 mph time of 3.4 seconds and reaches 124 mph in just 11.4 seconds, showcasing its enhanced speed and agility.

The introduction of a 25.7-kWh lithium-ion battery beneath the cargo floor grants the Urus SE an electric range of over 37 miles, with a top speed of 81 mph in EV mode before the V-8 seamlessly takes over. Lamborghini emphasizes an 80 percent reduction in emissions compared to the pure ICE model, aligning with the brand’s commitment to environmental consciousness.

Beyond its performance enhancements, the Urus SE receives aesthetic updates, including redesigned matrix LED headlights inspired by a bull’s tail and subtle revisions to the front and rear sections, borrowing elements from Lamborghini’s supercar lineage. The SUV’s rear design, reminiscent of the Gallardo, enhances downforce by 35 percent compared to its predecessor.

Offering customization options galore, Lamborghini presents the Urus SE with new 23-inch wheels, a plethora of body color choices, and 47 interior themes, alongside bespoke options through the Ad Personam program. Inside, the SUV features dual 12.3-inch screens and introduces four selectable driving modes: EV Drive, Hybrid, Performance, and Recharge, augmenting the existing driving modes for diverse driving experiences.

Speculations arise regarding the potential application of a similar V-8 PHEV setup in Lamborghini’s upcoming Huracan replacement, as the brand shifts towards downsizing and electrification. Notably, the Urus will transition to an all-electric platform with its second-generation model slated for launch in 2029, signaling Lamborghini’s progressive stance towards sustainable mobility. With the Urus SE offering a blend of electrification and Lamborghini’s hallmark performance, enthusiasts are encouraged to secure their orders for a gas-powered exotic SUV before the brand’s electric future unfolds.
