Toyota Confirms GR GT Reveal For January 2026 Poised for A V8

Toyota fans did not get the supercar reveal they were hoping for this week, but we did get clarity on when to set our alarms. Chairman Akio Toyoda confirmed that the long teased GR GT will make its full debut at the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon. The Fuji Speedway breadcrumbs and that billboard pairing the 2000GT and LFA with a shadowy newcomer were not misdirection. The car is real, just arriving on a slightly longer countdown.

The announcement came alongside a flurry of Toyota news that included a Century Coupe and a fresh Corolla concept. In a live broadcast, Toyoda explained that the original plan had to shift and that the proper stage is Auto Salon in January. He also winked at the car’s identity by referencing the camouflaged prototypes that stormed Goodwood this summer and the related Lexus concept that appeared at Monterey. Read between the lines and it sure sounds like Toyota and Lexus will each get a version of the same core machine, with GR GT wearing the Toyota badge and a likely LFR variant wearing the Lexus crest.

The best tease was audible. Toyota played a three part sound clip that moved from 2000GT to LFA and then to the GR GT, framing the newcomer as the next link in a very special chain. The final note carried a deep, bass rich rumble that could only pass for a V8 to most ears, and a cross plane one at that. Toyoda stopped short of confirming the cylinder count, but he did emphasize that engineers are obsessing over emotion and character. Expect a soundtrack crafted within the limits of modern regulations and designed to make the hairs on your neck stand up.

If you have been tracking the development arc, the pieces line up. The GR GT prototypes at Goodwood looked ready for serious work, with road and race versions running up the hill and hinting at a competition path that could involve GR GT3. Lexus followed with a concept that shared the same proportions but translated them into the brand’s design language. Toyoda’s coy remarks about headlights that look familiar only strengthen the case that this program is a two brand effort aimed at both track and street.

The timing makes sense strategically. Auto Salon has become a global stage for Japanese performance, and Toyota’s Gazoo Racing arm knows how to turn that spotlight into momentum. A January reveal gives engineers time to refine the sound and the details while keeping anticipation high through the winter. It also lets Toyota separate this halo debut from the broader product news swirling around the Japan Mobility Show.

As enthusiasts, we are encouraged by what we are hearing and seeing. The LFA earned its legend by combining engineering purity with an unforgettable voice. The GR GT appears ready to chase that kind of magic with modern tools and a powertrain that should deliver both speed and soul. Whether you end up in a Toyota or a Lexus version, the promise is the same. A new Japanese flagship built to stir emotion every time you press the starter.

Mark the calendar for January. If the teasers are any indication, Toyota is not just reviving a nameplate or filling a segment. It is setting the stage for a supercar that honors its heroes and writes its own chapter the moment it fires to life.
