The Chicago Auto Show has many surprises this year including a new 2013 Hyundai Elantra Coupe to compete with other Asian compact coupes on the market. It doesn’t take much brain power to realize that Hyundai has taken aim on rivals such as the Honda Civic Coupe when you look at the design of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra Coupe alone.

Hyundai has proven to be a major contender amongst brands that have previously dominated the automotive market on American soil. It has been rather evident in many of our previous test drive reviews of Hyundai vehicles that their cars stand out from the traditional crowd in a good way which is why the Hyundai Elantra has been named the 2012 North American Car of the Year.

As a compelling attempt to follow after the infamous Ken Block, the folks at Hyundai get this creative idea to “do something outrageous” inside the old Hyundai Motor America headquarters building in Fountain Valley, California before they demolish it. That something looks to be their own Gymkhana at the hands of Rhys Millen in his Genesis Coupe drift car.

‘STRETCHING THE COUPE TO NEW BOUNDARIES’
Hyundai is making new waves here with innovation, styling, quality, performance for a fair asking price; the latest is the all-new 2012 Veloster that I just finished testing and photographing.
The all-new Veloster is a three-door coupe design with the functionality of a hatch and a passenger-side forward-hinged rear door. It features the 1.6 liter GDI (gas-direct-injected) Gamma inline 4-cylinder engine and mated to the Hyundai standard proprietary six-speed manual transmission or the optional and Hyundai’s first EcoShift dual-clutch six-speed automatic transmission. Both transmissions give the Veloster up to 40mpg/highway miles.

Hyundai’s 2012 Genesis Coupe won’t officially debut for another six weeks (at January’s Detroit Auto Show), but the Korean automaker chose to reveal details of the car’s powertrain options at last weekend’s Korea Speed Festival in Yeongam, Korea. As expected, both the 2.0-liter turbo engine and the normally aspirated 3.8-liter V-6 are getting more grunt, which should result in a substantial performance improvement for the the new two-door Genesis. Also as expected, there won’t be a V-8 option, and there isn’t any word on a supercharged V-6 option yet, either. Read more…

Looking to build anticipation for the upcoming release of the 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe, the Korean automaker posted front and rear teaser shots of the new Genesis Coupe on its own Korean language blog. The “official” shots back up the leaked images we’ve been seeing, and confirm that the new Genesis Coupe will wear the now-familiar hexagonal grille. Read more…

‘THE COMPACT FIVE DOOR SEGMENT HAS A NEW PLAYER’
Hyundai is once again shaking up the growing compact five-door wagon segment with the introduction of the much improved forth-generation Accent compact five-door wagon. Available as a four-door sedan with a trunk, or a five-door wagon, I tested the more versatile and popular five-door SE and came away very impressed with the overall build quality, design, performance, attention to detail, versatility, and high-fuel mileage ratings.
Rhys Millen’s Genesis Coupe Gets Our SEMA Best In Show Award

We couldn’t make it to this year’s SEMA show, since no one picked us up hitchhiking on I-95. Instead, we’re at the mercy of the manufacturers, many of which flood our mailboxes with press releases on the latest SEMA decal kit or paint job. Some build cars that we’d really like to drive, and topping that list is the Hyundai Genesis Coupe built by Rhys Millen Racing (RMR). In fact, we’d go so far as to say it’s a car that Hyundai itself should be building. Read more…
