If you assume America’s biggest automotive exports are pickup trucks rolling out of Detroit, here’s a fun surprise. BMW says its Spartanburg, South Carolina factory once again led the United States in automotive exports by value in 2025, based on U.S. Department of Commerce data. That is not a small brag either. The plant shipped nearly 200,000 BMW X models to customers in almost 120 countries, tallying about $9 billion in export value from that one facility.
What makes this especially interesting is how global the logistics are, even though the vehicles are built in the Upstate. Most of those Spartanburg-built BMWs leave the country through the Port of Charleston, with additional volume moving out through Brunswick, Jacksonville, Everglades, and Baltimore. BMW also notes that more than 14,000 vehicles were exported by rail, which is one of those behind-the-scenes details you rarely think about when you see an X5 or X7 driving around your neighborhood.

The plant’s export story is not a one-year fluke, either. From 2014 through 2025, BMW says Spartanburg exported nearly 3 million vehicles with an export value totaling more than $113 billion. And in 2025 alone, associates assembled 412,799 BMW X models, making it the third-highest production year in the factory’s history and another reminder that the U.S. is not just a sales market for BMW, it is one of its manufacturing anchors.

Here’s the other “did you know” nugget that puts it all into perspective: BMW Manufacturing is BMW Group’s largest plant in the world, building more than 1,500 vehicles per day and supporting more than 12,000 jobs onsite, with annual capacity up to 450,000 vehicles. BMW says it has invested nearly $16 billion in its South Carolina operations since 1992, and more than 52% of the BMW vehicles sold in the U.S. during 2025 came from Spartanburg. So the next time someone says “BMWs are imported,” you can hit them with a fact that tends to stop the conversation in its tracks.
