The 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 brings welcomed updates that promise to enhance the driving experience. At first glance, the exterior may appear unchanged, but beneath the surface, significant improvements have been made. The focus of these updates lies in two key areas: powertrain enhancements and a major revamp of the infotainment system.

The battery options from the previous model remain, with the rear-wheel-drive variant offering a choice between a 62-kWh or 82-kWh battery pack. Meanwhile, the all-wheel-drive version exclusively comes with the 82-kWh battery option. The real magic happens under the hood, thanks to new motors sourced from the upcoming ID.7 model. The rear-wheel-drive ID.4 sees a remarkable boost in power, leaping from 201 horsepower to a much more robust 282 horsepower. The all-wheel-drive version also experiences a significant bump, going from 295 to an estimated 330 horsepower. Keep in mind that some powertrain details are still being finalized, including torque figures and precise range estimates. However, Volkswagen assures us that the 2024 model will likely offer increased range, which is certainly promising. After a brief test drive of the rear-drive ID.4, it’s clear that the vehicle delivers a spirited performance, although it may not necessarily blow you away.

The updated infotainment system, which has undergone a complete overhaul, is another welcomed aspect that attempts to address many complaints that we have mentioned, such as having slider button areas that don’t light up at night. Borrowing technology from the ID.7, Volkswagen has transformed the infotainment experience. The new system is highly customizable, featuring multiple pages and layouts that allow you to tailor your preferred applications and information displays. At the top and bottom of the screen are fixed function bars, offering both convenience and accessibility. The lower bar is dedicated to climate control, ensuring that essential functions are always at your fingertips. You can even personalize the top bar with shortcuts to your preferred apps and menus. What’s even more impressive is the system’s newfound speed and responsiveness. Gone are the days of frustrating delays and stuttering when tapping or swiping, and apps now launch almost instantly. This marks a significant improvement that should greatly enhance the user experience. Additionally, for those who opt for the top-tier model, a larger 12.9-inch display is available, complete with illuminated slider touch buttons, making it easier to adjust climate settings even in the dark.

However, there is a catch to these impressive infotainment upgrades. They are exclusively available in ID.4 models equipped with the 82-kWh battery. If you opt for one of the more budget-friendly 62-kWh models, you’ll have to contend with the previous, less-than-stellar infotainment system, complete with unlit sliders. While this might disappoint budget-conscious buyers, it’s a strong incentive to consider stretching your budget for the 82-kWh models to enjoy the enhanced infotainment experience.

The updated 2024 ID.4 models are expected to hit the market soon, with production scheduled to commence towards the end of the year at Volkswagen’s Chattanooga, Tennessee plant. Importantly, this timing means that buyers can still take advantage of full federal tax credits. As we await more details on range, pricing, and other specifications in the coming months, it’s evident that Volkswagen is taking a step in the right direction with these significant improvements to the ID.4 EV.
