Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the latest iteration of its iconic off-road vehicle, the G-Class, or G-Wagon for some of you, for the year 2025. Renowned for its rugged design and unmatched performance, the G-Wagen has remained largely unchanged for over four decades. However, in a nod to evolving automotive trends, Mercedes is introducing electrification to the G-Class lineup, paving the way for the forthcoming EQG EV.

The base model, G550, undergoes suprirsing changes under the hood, bidding farewell to its V-8 engine in favor of a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine with mild-hybrid technology. This setup generates 443 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, with an additional boost of 20 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque from the integrated starter generator. While offering slightly less torque than its predecessor, the G550 maintains impressive off-road capabilities, thanks to its mechanical differential locks and low-range off-road gearing.

Mercedes integrates advanced technology into the G-Class, including the Off-Road Cockpit function within the MBUX infotainment system, providing essential off-roading data on the touchscreen and digital instrument cluster. Additionally, features like the “Transparent Hood” function and a suite of safety equipment, such as adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring, enhance the driving experience and ensure safety both on and off the road.

Meanwhile, the performance-oriented G63 retains its twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 engine, delivering an exhilarating 577 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. This powerhouse accelerates the G63 from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 4.2 seconds. New options, such as the AMG Active Ride Control, further elevate the G63’s performance, offering hydraulic roll stabilization and adaptive damping for superior handling.

Visually, both the G550 and G63 receive subtle updates, including refreshed bumper designs and new paint options. The G63, in particular, offers the striking Manufaktur Hyper Blue Magno paint and standard adaptive LED headlights, along with various wheel options ranging from 20 to 22 inches.

While Mercedes has yet to disclose the pricing for the updated G-Class models, it’s anticipated that the 2025 models will see a slight increase over their predecessors, which started at $144,150 for the G550 and $180,950 for the G63 in 2024. With its blend of timeless design, cutting-edge technology, and uncompromising performance, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class continues to reign as the epitome of luxury off-road vehicles.
