The full-size pickup truck segment is hot right now and when it comes to having a luxurious truck to win over a good portion of truck buyers in America, Toyota wants to dip their feet into the water with a new Capstone trim for the newly redesigned Tundra.
The 2022 Toyota Tundra is already getting rave reviews and some journalists feel that it comes up a little short when pitted against certain trim levels of the competition. One particular area that Toyota has announced today that they want to tackle is the luxury aspects of the full-size truck by introducing a new 2022 Toyota Tundra Capstone, their take on the range-topper that adds a luxurious theme inside and out.
The 2022 Toyota Tundra Capstone trim offers up several unique amenities that make it more luxurious starting with having the i-Force MAX twin-turbo V6 hybrid powertrain that boasts 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque. Also, the Tundra Capstone will only be available in the CrewMax body style as we expected but it does something special with the bodywork with a limited selection of colors, unique 22-inch wheels that fit the part of a “luxury-like” truck, body-colored grille frame and wheel arches, and chrome accents including the mirror caps, door handles, and a side body panel accent.
For the exterior colors, the Tundra Capstone sports a limited number of selections, including the colors of Blueprint, Celestial Silver, Magnetic Gray, Midnight Black, Supersonic Red, and Wind Chill Pearl.
While the Tundra Capstone will be the only Tundra trim to get large 22-inch wheels, it will have an Adaptive Variable Suspension with rear load-leveling air suspension to smooth out the ride quality that may be hindered somewhat with the larger wheels and shorter sidewall on the tires.
The Tundra Capstone will also be the only one to have an interior as lavish and plush as you see here. There’s semi- aniline leather seats with a distinctive two-tone color scheme, dark walnut open-pore wood trim, LED ambient lighting under the trim with a “Capstone” illuminated lettering on the passenger-side dashboard, standard panoramic moonroof, and additional work to reduce cabin noise and vibration through sound-deadening front door glass and even hydraulic cab mounts. The interior will be unique and have the proper soft-touch areas and color accents to fit the mold of a proper “luxurious truck” and potentially to compete with the likings of the Ford F-150 Limited, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country (or GMC Sierra 1500 Denali), or RAM 1500 Limited.
As far as capability goes, the 2022 Tundra Capstone doesn’t compromise that much on its ruggedness despite the luxury appeal. Towing and payload is down slightly at 10,340 pounds and payload is 1,485 pounds. As far as pricing goes, we expect the 2022 Toyota Tundra Capstone to slightly undercut its competition that we mentioned above, which is a fine proposition considering this is Toyota’s first stab at a luxury version of the Tundra when it becomes available in Spring 2022.
