Ram is bringing back a van that many buyers probably did not realize they missed until now. The 2027 ProMaster City is officially returning to the U.S. market, and it looks like a much more serious effort than a simple badge revival. With more power, more cargo room, a fresh Ram identity, and a starting price targeted below $40,000, this new compact commercial van could end up filling a real gap for small businesses, fleets, and even buyers who just want something practical without stepping up to a full-size work van.
Built on Stellantis’ global mid-size commercial van platform, the new ProMaster City is closely related to several European vans already on the road, but Ram is shaping it for the needs of American customers. It gets a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine making 166 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. Those numbers are not meant to set anyone’s pulse racing, but for a van designed to spend its life in cities, neighborhoods, and job sites, they sound right on target.

The real story here is utility. Ram says the new ProMaster City offers more than 167.1 cubic feet of cargo space, along with a load floor long enough for serious hauling and enough width between the wheel wells to fit common jobsite materials. The van is also designed with a low step-in height and multiple access points, including rear swing doors or an available liftgate, plus a passenger-side sliding door. In other words, this is a van meant to work hard without making every delivery or equipment run more complicated than it needs to be.

Ram also seems to understand that work vans do not have to feel stripped bare anymore. Even the base Tradesman trim comes with forward collision warning, automatic headlights, rear parking sensors, heated front seats, and a programmable speed limiter. Inside, drivers get a 10-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.0-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Move up to the SLT and the van adds nicer exterior trim, front parking sensors, dual-tone 17-inch wheels, and a wireless phone charger, which should make daily use feel a little less utilitarian.

There is also some flexibility in the lineup that should help the new ProMaster City appeal to a wide range of buyers. Ram plans to offer both Cargo Van and Passenger Wagon versions, with seating for five to eight people in the passenger model. Between multiple trim levels, rear access options, and body configurations, the brand says there will be 11 different setups available. That kind of variety matters in this segment, especially when one van may need to serve as a delivery tool, a mobile workshop, or a people mover depending on the business.

Set to go on sale in the first quarter of 2027, the return of the ProMaster City feels like a smart move at the right time. The market has no shortage of oversized commercial vans, but there is still plenty of demand for something smaller, easier to live with, and versatile enough to handle real work. If Ram can deliver on the promised packaging, capability, and sub-$40,000 entry price, the ProMaster City might turn out to be one of the brand’s more quietly important launches in the years ahead.
