Those of us who know of the Lexus GX 460 knew it was time that we saw something new from the brand, and it is finally here in all its boxy and chiseled glory. The highly anticipated 2024 Lexus GX has arrived, marking a new chapter in the body-on-frame luxury SUV segment taking two decades of experience and bringing us something fresh. This latest iteration, known as a “Sophisticated Utility Vehicle,” introduces new powertrains, premium features, and the all-new Overtrail grade to pit the new GX deep into the off-roading fray.

“For more than two decades, the GX has bridged the gap between legendary off-road capability and luxurious everyday driving,” said Dejuan Ross, group vice president and general manager of the Lexus division. “The GX is a critical piece in the evolution of the Next Chapter for Lexus, and with new powertrains, an impressive host of premium features, and the all-new Overtrail grade, the 2024 GX has something for everyone.”

Building upon the success of its predecessor, the 2024 GX delivers to offer technology, luxurious comfort, and exceptional off-road capability that Lexus customers have come to expect. Not to mention, the unsurpassed quality and reliability that previous generation Lexus GX owners have enjoyed for decades.

For powertrains, the new Lexus GX gets the twin-turbocharged 3.4L V6 engine paired with a 10-speed Direct Shift Automatic Transmission. The engine produces 349 horsepower and 479 lb.-ft. of torque. The towing capacity has increased to 8,000 lbs. for Premium, Premium+, and Overtrail grades equipped with the standard tow hitch. Lexus says there will be a hybrid powertrain available at a later date.

The 2024 GX showcases a new aggressive exterior design that makes it appear more rugged. Lexus designers sought to convey the off-road functionality of a true body-on-frame SUV while envisioning GX owners having the capability of enjoying outdoor experiences.

Many will take first notice to the boxy and chiseled body lines, in addition to a nearly flat front windshield, which looks to pay homage to competitors in the rugged off-roading body-on-frame SUV landscape. In a way, the new Lexus GX looks unique in its own right with its upright stature yet a larger presence over the outgoing GX.

While the new GX features a square-body profile with a horizontal design motif, it will still cater to the luxury side of things with several Lexus branding touches. The front continues the Lexus spindle body concept, characterized by a bold design that signifies its off-roading capabilities. The wider track, fender flares, and pulled-back front pillar base contribute to the GX’s grounded and stable stance. The Premium Triple Beam LED headlamps and raised grille opening provide improved visibility, while the decreased front overhang enhances clearance.

The new 2024 GX is larger throughout and rides on a wheelbase that is 2.36 inches longer than the outgoing GX, in addition to having a body that is 2.75 inches longer. The A-pillar has been moved back to enhance visibility and the belt line is lowered, too. There’s also improved ground clearance further enhance its off-roading abilities. The new Overtrail trim gets 33-inch tires with 18-inch wheels giving the GX the deserved off-roading prowess.

Responding to customer feedback, the all-new GX now comes with a standard power rear lift door, featuring a pop-out window and an available kick sensor for hands-free convenience, which replaces the outgoing GX’s intrusive swinging rear door.

The 2024 GX will be available in six grades: Premium, Premium+, Luxury, Luxury+, and two all-new additions to the Lexus lineup: Overtrail and Overtrail+. The 2024 GX gets 11 color options available depending on the grade. The colors include Eminent White Pearl, Nebula Gray Pearl, Atomic Silver, GX-first Incognito, Caviar, Nori Green Pearl, and Nightfall Mica. The Overtrail and Overtrail+ grades introduce exclusive bi-tone exterior color combinations, such as Atomic Silver/Black Roof, Incognito/Black Roof, Nori Green Pearl/Black Roof, and Lexus-first Earth/Black Roof.

Inside, the all-new GX has a driver-focused cockpit design, which is somewhat taken from the all-new RX, along with an available color head-up display. Overall, the dashboard has a simplistic approach with a clean layout where the focus is the large 14-inch multimedia touchscreen that’s the same as found in other new Lexus vehicles with frequently used controls retained with adjustment dials and an array of on-screen controls. The off-road controls are located near the gear shifter for easy access. The driver’s gauge cluster is a digital 12.3-inch multi-information display. The 2024 GX also comes standard with wireless Apple CarPlay Integration and Android Auto compatibility.

The GX offers seating for up to seven passengers, and there have been enhancements to seat cushions, seatback bolsters, and headrests, in addition to seat hip point to heel height has been extended by 1.18 inches for added comfort.

The second row is available in two configurations: Captain’s chairs (6-passegner setup) or a 60:40 split-folding bench (7-passenger setup). A one-motion tumble system has been added to provide convenient access to the third row or luggage space. The driver and front passenger seats come standard with heating and ventilation, while heated second-row seats are available. The third row offers both power and manual seat configurations. A rear seat reminder system has also been added.

The interior color design of the 2024 Lexus GX focuses on earth tones to complement the natural surroundings outside the vehicle. Customers can choose between a semi-aniline leather and NuLuxe trimmed interior in Black, Dapple Gray, or Saddle Tan, accompanied by black or dark brown grained trim. Overtrail grades introduce GX-first color combinations, such as Black NuLuxe trimmed interior with Olive Ultrasuede accents or Chateau NuLuxe trimmed interior with Olive Ultrasuede accents and black ornamentation.

The GX includes six illuminated charging ports (four in Overtrail) and a wireless charger in the front console tray. Luggage space for both second and third-row configurations has improved to accommodate up to 5 suitcases with the third row folded. Additional storage spaces have been added under the cargo area for smaller items, and a 120V AC inverter is included for additional power needs.

The 2024 GX comes standard with a 10-speaker premium surround sound system, with the option to upgrade to a 21-Speaker Mark Levinson Surround Sound system. Depending on the grade, additional options include Digital Key, Cool Box, Head-Up Display, Traffic Jam Assist, Cold Area Package, and a Tonneau Cover.

The 2024 Lexus GX shares the GA-F platform introduced in the current-generation LX 600, in addition to having the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system available.

The GX gets standard Full-Time 4WD and a Torsen limited-slip center differential with a locking feature. Overtrail grades feature an additional electronic locking rear differential. Improvements in the electronic transfer case allowing for faster switching into 4-high.

Multi-Terrain Select (MTS), Crawl Control, Downhill Assist Control (DAC), and 3D Multi-Terrain Monitor systems are available on GX Overtrail grades, along with an Electronic-Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (E-KDSS) for improved wheel articulation.
