BMW has recently introduced a remarkable addition to its lineup, the Armored X5 Protection, designed to cater to the safety needs of individuals facing elevated security risks. While the brand is renowned for its “Ultimate Driving Machine,” this time, they’ve taken that reputation a step further by creating a vehicle capable of withstanding armor-piercing bullets. This formidable machine is set to make its grand debut at the 2023 Munich Auto Show.

The Armored X5 Protection boasts an impressive VR6 protection rating, ensuring its occupants are shielded from bullets fired from an AK-47 assault rifle. What’s truly remarkable is that BMW’s dedication to security wasn’t an afterthought; it was seamlessly integrated into the design from the very inception of the current-generation X5. This forward-thinking approach has resulted in a bulletproof X5 that maintains the sleek appearance of its non-armored counterpart when viewed from the outside.

However, beneath its unassuming exterior lies a fortress of protection. BMW has strategically incorporated high-strength steel into various parts of the vehicle, including the doors, side frame, roof, and bulkhead. The vehicle features bulletproof glass, an armored partition between the trunk and passenger compartment, and an aluminum splinter guard beneath its underbody. For those who desire even higher levels of protection, the option to purchase extended underbody armor and additional armored roof panels is available at an additional cost.

Innovatively, BMW has addressed the vulnerability of the fuel tank in high-speed pursuits. A well-aimed shot can’t easily terminate a chase, as the tank automatically seals itself upon being punctured, preventing fuel loss. To accommodate the added weight of the armor, BMW engineers have made several chassis modifications, ensuring the vehicle maintains its dynamic performance.

Stepping inside, the Armored X5 Protection provides occupants with a luxurious experience, akin to the standard X5. However, this model exclusively offers four seats. The driver is greeted by the BMW Curved Display setup, featuring a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch display for the iDrive 8.5 infotainment system. Standard features include soft-close doors, leather upholstery, heated front sport seats, ambient lighting, and a four-zone automatic climate control system. The interior exudes opulence, making passengers feel far from confined within a tank. For those seeking personalization, options range from flagpoles to massaging front seats.

Powering this formidable machine is a twin-turbocharged, 4.4-liter V8 engine, complemented by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, producing an impressive 530 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. This powerplant, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, propels the X5 Protection from a standstill to 62 mph in just 5.9 seconds.

The Armored X5 Protection is set to commence production in February 2024, although pricing details have yet to be disclosed. Nevertheless, cost is unlikely to be a significant concern for its target audience, especially considering BMW’s claim that it’s the best-selling model in its relatively niche segment. In the realm of armored vehicles, the Armored X5 Protection undoubtedly stands as a testament to BMW’s commitment to blending luxury, performance, and security into one ultimate package.
