It’s Official: The U.S. Is Getting The Scion FR-S

By now you’ve seen enough pictures and video of the 2013 Toyota FT 86 / GT 86 and Subaru BRZ to know that there aren’t a lot of differences in styling or specifications between the various brands. Get set to add one more (nearly) identical car to the list, in the form of the Scion FR-S. As we suspected, Scion will use the FR-S to grow sales (and brand awareness) in the United States, which means that you won’t be buying a Toyota FT-86 on these shores. Read more

Lately, an onslaught of new photos and videos has been released showcasing these two new rear-wheel-drive boxer engine lightweight hotties. The 2011 New York Auto Show has brought us some interesting vehicles, one of them being the Scion FR-S concept which is an evolution of the Toyota FT-86 that we first saw just before the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show. Since then, Toyota has tweaked the design over and over making us enthusiasts truly impatient and ready to see this bad-boy on the road finally. Two new walk-around-videos have been released showing many of the highlighted design cues of the new Scion FR-S concept. If the production version is anything like what we see here, then Toyota may have a winner in my book. Please don’t fu*k this up Toyota! Enjoy the videos below!
This Is Scion’s FT-86 (the Scion FR-S)

The official unveiling of the Scion FR-S is scheduled for later today, but that hasn’t prevented images from turning up on the internet ahead of time. The car that will be revealed in New York today is officially listed as a concept, so read into that what you will. The styling has been toned down a bit from the FT-86 II Concept that Toyota displayed in Geneva, but the latest concept looks a long way from production to me. The blacked out windows say “don’t expect an accurate rendering of a production interior”, while the sharply arched and creased front fenders would be difficult (expensive, actually) to put into production. As Autoblog’s Zach Bowman points out, those enormous wheels will never see production and the side view mirrors can’t meet DOT standards. Read more
Toyota To Show Production FT-86 At Tokyo Motor Show?

If Japan’s Best Car magazine is correct, Toyota will show a production version of the FT-86 sports coupe as soon as this year’s Tokyo Motor Show. Held in December, the Tokyo Motor Show is usually considered one of the industry’s most significant, and it’s often used by Japanese manufacturers to highlight both concept and new production vehicles. Toyota showed a re-styled FT-86 II at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, and the concept met with mixed reviews. Some (like myself) felt that it was too busy and departed from the clean lines of the original prototype. Others (likely Toyota’s target demographic) liked the edgy styling of the FT-86 II. Read more

Don’t you love automotive rumors especially when it is one that fulfills that long-time dream of your favorite supercar making its way to production and into your driveway? Sure, it’s great to daydream from time to time even if that supercar happens to be the return of the Toyota Supra, not in the form of the Lexus LFA though.
