Mercedes-AMG recently introduced the much-anticipated second-generation GT Coupe, marking its return with a notable shift in design and performance dynamics. Essentially mirroring the new SL model in a hardtop iteration, the GT55 and GT63 models offer a compelling blend of power and luxury, all at a slightly more accessible price point compared to their convertible counterparts.

With the base GT55 boasting an impressive 469 horsepower, Mercedes announced a starting price of $136,050, inclusive of a $1,150 destination fee. Stepping up to the higher-performance GT63, which delivers a robust 577 horsepower, comes with a higher MSRP of $177,050.

Unlike its predecessor, the second-generation GT Coupe is positioned more as a grand tourer than a hardcore sports car. It has transitioned away from a bespoke platform, rear-mounted dual-clutch transaxle, dry-sump engine, and two-seat cabin, now offering a more spacious 2+2 configuration with standard all-wheel drive. Powering both models is a potent 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine mated to a nine-speed multi-clutch automatic transmission.

In terms of competition, the Porsche 911 remains a primary rival for the Mercedes-AMG GT. While the GT55 comes in slightly cheaper than the 911 Carrera 4S, its weight of 4,343 pounds suggests performance closer to the Carrera 4. Similarly, the GT63 falls between the 911 Carrera 4 GTS and Turbo, aligning more closely with the former in terms of performance comparison.

Looking beyond the Porsche, the GT Coupe competes against a spectrum of GT cars, including the more affordable Lexus LC500 and the higher-priced Aston Martin Vantage. Notably, while the LC500 offers a lower price point at $100,300, the Aston Martin Vantage approaches $200,000, indicating the range of options available in this segment.
