Okay, government General Motors has emerged from bankruptcy as a leaner and meaner operation force happily able to appease the Obama administration and even whoa consumers looking to buy a new car. The “whoa” you are hearing from consumers is a very loud one after the announcement of the Chevy Volt, GM’s prided and newly found work-horse vehicle to take them into the next century, getting 230 miles to the gallon.

Who said Hummers are one of the most gas guzzling and uneconomical SUV’s around? I actually use to say that all the time until now. A Utah company, Raser Technologies, has converted a Hummer H3 into a 100mpg extended range vehicle good for about 40 miles.
Today posted on Wired.com’s blog is a write-up about this new mammoth that was one of the most criticized vehicles when it comes to fuel efficiency. Raser Technologies says this vehicle should push 90mph and still have off-road capabilities. It has a lithium ion battery that can be charged in 3 hours. The company has also said they will be converting upwards of 2000 of these big SUV’s by the end of the year.
So why start with a Hummer in making it an EV or extended range electric vehicle?
Below is a short excerpt from wired.com’s blog answering that very question:

General Motors has just released an exclusive video of Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen, Directed by Michael Bay, showcasing the Autobots – including the new Chevy Camaro, Volt, Beat, Trax and the Corvette Centennial Concept (Corvette Stingray). This should be a pretty good movie!
I have to admit, the video below looks like a futuristic Commercial for General Motors if you ask me, but who am I do judge. GM, do your thing! Whatever works for you I support you because it is an American brand and we all know we need to support our American brands to get this economy jump started again. Maybe “Jolt” or aka the Chevy Volt in Transformers 2 can help JUMP-START it for us?!?!?

GM’s Bob Lutz to Retire at End Of 2009

With the recent state of the economy all we have heard is the overshadowing echo of layoffs not giving much room for the word “retirement”. Bob Lutz, General Motors Vice Chairman, will be taking on a new role as of April 1st leading up to his retirement at the end of 2009.
For 46 years Bob Lutz has worked in the automotive industry which consisted of working for all of the Big 3 (GM, Chrysler and Ford) and BMW. Lutz is known for many head turners including the latest development of the Chevy Volt. Even with Chrysler he led the development of the Plymouth Prowler and Dodge Viper.
Bob Lutz will be replaced by Thomas G. Stephens who will report to President and COO Fritz Henderson. Lutz will carry out his year reporting directly to CEO Rick Wagoner.
With the change in the economy it would only be realistic to start expecting more people just like BMW’s outgoing Chris Bangle and Bob Lutz leave the automotive industry.

Rumors were already circulating about GM offering the Chevy Volt in Cadillac form and that may be confirmed at the 2009 North American International Auto show. Plans have been made to showcase a Cadillac E-Flex concept at the Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS) and according to BusinessWeek, the two-door concept will use the same extended range EV drive-train as the Chevrolet Volt.
Rick Wagoner Bringing Chevy Volt to D.C.
Rest assured, you will see plenty of images and press talk on Rick Wagoner’s trip to D.C. Today because he will be driving a Chevy Cruze with components from the Chevy Volt. The 2011 Chevy Volt will be their also, on display. If you are in the area you will have time to check it out in person near Delaware Ave. and C Street.
I wonder if this type of press will have any influence on Congress’s decision?
